Andrew Low Feels Portraits Don't Always Need to Be Sharp

Sharpness wasn't a priority for this music album cover photoshoot

“You never know what you will get, but that’s why I love film,” says Scottish photographer Andrew Low on why he shoots with film so often. Instead of going down the traditional route for an album cover, Low decided to experiment. It paid off very well in the form of a top-five placement at the 2021 International Photography Awards. February 29. I took the metro north into the city the night before. We knew the virus was spreading throughout the city, but it was still early enough that I was in the minority for wearing a mask. Alix laughed at me. We went to TV Eye and saw a great punk show. We didn’t stay out too late, and I crashed the next morning. Before I left, Alix told me I could borrow her Olympus Infinity Stylus camera. She mentioned that there was already a roll of film in it, and I snapped this photo.

I didn’t know until I developed the roll that it was already exposed once before I shot it -- I got whole roll of double exposures.

In 2009, I hated where I lived. I found any excuse to leave the house. My friends and I often went to this cafe (turned bar at night) called Rocket Fuel around the corner from me. We were their only customers in the evening. They let us set up our amp and bring our guitars and hold our own “open mics”. One evening my really good friend Sweeney showed up in a suit, skate shoes, and a bandage on his head. He had just hit his head skateboarding. Later that night we discovered lamps and checkered floors in the basement bathroom, and so we took some photos. As horrible as this era was, these times of solace with my reckless friends make me incredibly nostalgic. I loved this night. Even though him and I don’t talk anymore, I miss him and I love all of our times together. I hope he’s good.
