Angsty Filla Drabble
Finn sat next to Willa, his hand clasped in hers the way a brother might. He tried to provide all of the reassurance he could, to somehow convey it through their touching palms - but he knew, deep down, it was a lost cause. Nothing he could do would help her. He was simply at the mercy of time. As powerless as he’d ever felt.
“Do you remember when we all went to Hawaii? For Aulani?” He mused, more to himself. He did this often, lately, started one-sided conversations on the off chance she could hear. He ran a thumb over her knuckles. She didn’t respond. “Surf and sand, and all that. It was all work. We didn’t get to relax. We’ve got to go back. When you get out of this.”
Willa didn’t react. Of course she didn’t. Finn’s heart sunk, even though he hadn’t expected her to.
“Remember when the OT’s knocked me out last year? I woke up in the hospital. You’d... You’d brought me daisies. Purple ones. They put such a smile on my face.” Finn smiled at the memory, glancing at the table across her bed, at his own gift to her.
Carnations. They weren’t quite as delicate a flower, not quite as coveted. But they were vibrant. Bright pinks, vibrant purples, and brilliant blues peppered the bouquet; so much more Willa than some dainty rose. These were loud, cheerful. Exactly what she would love.
If she’d only wake up to see them.
Finn glanced around the hospital room, frowning at the dust accumulating in the corners. it should be immaculate. The last thing she needs is dirt, in here. He huffed. It’d only been a week that she’d been in here. Could they not keep it clean?
He took a breath, knowing it was an overreaction. The week had been filled with them - all of the Keepers had been on-edge since losing their youngest member to a coma, a result of the Green Witch herself. They took shifts by her side in rotation; Finn and Amanda had been here most often, to protect her, and to provide a familiar face when she woke, if she happened to wake.
“Love you, kid.” Finn whispered, under his breath. At that moment, Maybeck shuffled into the room with McDonalds, tossing a Happy Meal to him.
“Hey. Congrats, guard duty’s up.” Maybeck, ever the cynic, tried to keep his words lighthearted lately. Finn had trouble not reminding him of the gravity of the situation, keeping in mind he was only trying to lighten the mood. He just nodded, and bit his lip.
“You okay, man?” he tried again. Finn shrugged, not wanting to attempt to talk around the lump in his throat. “She’ll be up soon. She has to be. It’s Willa, after all. She’d come back if only to spite Malificent.”
“She would.” Finn smiled. “I’m sure the OT’s would get an earful, if she had the chance.”
“Could you imagine?” Maybeck laughed. “Waking up, running to MK to yell at Greenie?”
“Waving a finger,” Finn laughed, “ I can hear her now... ‘It is NOT nice to put people in comas.’”
Maybeck shook his head. “She could probably take out that whole army, single-handedly, if we let her. If she was mad enough.”
“Yes she could.” Finn smiled and glanced at her peaceful expression. “I wish she would wake up.”
“Maybe she’s tired.”
“You’re an idiot.” he laughed.
Maybeck shrugged. “She’ll be back on her feet soon enough. I truly believe that.”
“And we’ll be right here to help her up.”
Finn glanced around, at the wires monitoring her, at the screens displaying her heartbeat, her pulse, her brain activity. At the tubes feeding her, and the IV keeping her hydrated. When he’d first walked into the room, the sight had taken his breath away, the sight of his best friend so... lifeless. He’d nearly passed out and needed a bed himself. He got queasy again, forced to look away.
And, squeezing her hand in his, he made a silent vow to never leave her side again.
