I just realized that in order to change my identity, we will need to meet. Would attorney-client privilege apply here? I... I don't want to be found, or found out, y'know...?
-- Fermentor
P.S., I've been using an alias this entire time. I trust nobody anymore, not even myself.
P.P.S., bring a bag of sugar when we do meet up. I think I might be starving to death, but I can't tell, I don't have a stomach or feel hunger.
yeah, i won’t disclose anything, don’t worry. and you only have to tell me what you wanna tell me.
i.. definitely get the alias thing. it’s safer.
itd be a good idea to meet up; i will bring sugar. do you want it warm?

Fermenter (Alchemist Archetype)

(art by Christian Lachel on Artstation)
The art of distilling and fermenting is perhaps one of the earliest acts of chemistry that humanity ever discovered, so it only makes sense that alchemists would have a specialization centered around it.
While some dismiss them as mere moonshiners or drug chemists, these fermenters are always eager to see the results of their work first-hand, and are unafraid of testing their concoctions, particularly tinctures, on themselves.
Tinctures are a type of alchemical consumable that is suspended in alcohol, and has plenty of useful effects at the cost of drawbacks due to the imbibers altered state of mind. Needless to say, these alchemists learn to make the most of them, and push the boundaries of their limits with their research.
There is some credence to the stereotypes about them, however, as testing on themselves means they have intimate knowledge of what mixtures have pleasing effects, and therefore, are a good way to make money from home-distilled booze or handmade designer drugs. However, they may find themselves unwelcome in places where such practices are heavily regulated or outlawed.
As we will soon see, the fermenter boasts fun ways to enhance themselves both in and out of combat.
These alchemists put a lot inside their bodies, and as such, they develop a high tolerance for alcohol, as well as a decent resistance to the addictive effects of drugs, and even the harmful effects of tinctures. All of which only grows with their mastery, until they take no penalty at all from tinctures, and can down copious amounts of alcohol without noticing the effects.
Being in an altered state of mind does, however, make them heavy-handed with their bomb ingredients though, and when so affected they tend to create bombs that are more volatile and dangerous, but harder to aim.
As masters of distilling, they have learned to brew tinctures en masse, able to brew multiple doses in a single batch, rather than one at a time.
This archetype expects to character to brew large amounts of tinctures, drugs, and the like and use them to enhance their abilities. Tinctures cross the line of the limits of what alchemical buffs are supposed to allow, so they maintain their use even into high levels, especially since fermenters eventually negate all the drawbacks as well. If all that appeals to you over poisons, perhaps this archetype is for you. I personally recommend a combined blasting and utility build able to destroy foes with bombs in great store and have the right buffed skills and abilities for the situation.
While this archetype heavily makes use of intoxicants to buff themselves and activate certain other abilities, please remember to enjoy anything in moderation and safety.
In any case, there’s a lot of inspiration you could take from the aesthetic of moonshiners, rum-runners, and other prohibition-era tropes, but remember that these are hardly the only sort of fermenters you might see in the game setting depending on local laws.
Mighty wollipeds are herded for their fur and meat on Lokas, but the world is also famous for it’s low-temperature brews of local fruit, something the alchemists living there have developed for years, including a variety of intoxicating mind-altering substances of varying levels of legality. Some of these even make it off world through the portal gates.
The brewing and selling of liquor was banned by Alcos the Stoic, but despite the best efforts of his men, he can’t stamp out the underground brewing economy, which is lead by many crafty alchemists, who only grow more creative and daring once they begin imbibing the fruit of their labors.
Though grumpy and grim to most, Balgan Blessed the svirfneblin knows exactly how to get a party started, constantly tinkering in his lab to create all sorts of intoxicants that even the drow seek him out for, though occasionally someone gets it in their head to kidnap him for exclusive control of his work, a decision that often heralds raids by others deep world factions.

Difference Between Bioreactor and Fermentor
In the field of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, bioreactors and fermenter play a crucial role in the large-scale production of biologically active compounds. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct differences in terms of functionality, application, and design. Understanding these differences is essential for industries involved in microbial, enzymatic, and cell culture-based production.
What is Fermenter
A fermenter is a piece of equipment specifically designed to carry out fermentation processes, where microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts or fungi transform organic substances into products such as alcohol, organic acids and gases. Fermenters are common in the food and beverage industry.
They provide an optimal environment for microbial growth by maintaining temperature, pH, oxygen levels, and nutrient supply. Common applications of fermenters include the production of antibiotics, alcoholic beverages, probiotics, enzymes, and organic acids. Depending on the process, fermenters can be aerobic or anaerobic, enabling industries to maximize yield and efficiency in biological manufacturing.
Key features of a fermenter
Fermenters are used especially in the production of fermented foods and beverages such as beer, wine, yoghurt and fermented soy products. In the pharmaceutical industry, they are used to produce antibiotics and other biotechnological products by microbial fermentation.
Specific application: Designed primarily for fermentation processes.
Control of conditions: Allows precise control of factors such as temperature, pH and oxygen, essential for fermentation.
Materials of construction: Generally made of stainless steel to prevent contamination and facilitate cleaning.
Process types: Handles both aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) processes.

This is a water-seal stoneware crock. The design is ancient.
It is, essentially, a large ceramic vessel that you put vegetables and sometimes brine into. To prevent spoilage, you place those ceramic weights on top of whatever food is in the crock, and that keeps them weighted down, below the level of the water. Because fermentation creates gases, most crocks have a "water groove" in them. The lid sits in the groove, which allows air to escape but not come in. Because fermentation creates gas, the interior of the crock is positive-pressure, and because the gas created is almost entirely carbon dioxide, it's a low-oxygen environment that additionally helps prevent spoilage.
And all this would be pointless without lactobacillus, the bacteria that chomp down on the vegetables you put into the crock. They're anaerobic, which means totally fine without oxygen, and they produce an environment that's inhospitable to most other organisms. The main things they produce are CO2, which means no oxygen for other bacteria, and lactic acid, which makes the fermented thing sour and also decreases the pH low enough that many other bacteria cannot survive. They tolerate high levels of salt, which kill yet more competitor bacteria. It ends up being a really really good way to keep food from going off.
Our ancestors figured this out thousands of years ago without knowing what bacteria were. This general ceramic design has been in use around the world in virtually every place that had ceramics, salt, and too much cabbage or cucumbers that was going to rot if they didn't do something about it. It's thousands of years old, so old that it gets hard to interpret the evidence of the ceramics.
And I have crocks like this in my kitchen, where I make my own ferments, and I always think about how beautiful and elegant it all is, and how this was probably invented hundreds of times as people converged on something that Just Works.
(I do have pH testing strips though.)

Red Hood held out his now uncovered hand as if to ask for a hand shake. Danny floated a bit closer and reached out with his own gloved finger. He poked into the back of the guy’s hand.
“What are you doing?”
“Dude, what if you’re contagious?”
“Can ghosts get sick?” Nightwing asked.
“There are ghost diseases, yeah.” Danny answered, still poking at Red Hood’s hand. “No ghost antibiotics, though. You just have to tough it out.”
“Is that what I have?”
“No.” Danny said. “You have something easier to fix.”
Danny floated back so that he was eye level with the two taller heroes. He folded his arms across his chest and looked at Red Hood.
“So, like. Is there a private place we could chat?”
“Private?” Nightwing asked. “Why? It isn’t fatal, is it?”
“Uh no? It's just personal. What’s it called Hippo? The doctor thing.”
“Are you talking about HIPAA?” Red Hood asked, sounding confused.
“That’s it!” Danny snapped a finger and pointed at Red Hood. “It’s personal medical info. We are on a rooftop in the middle of the biggest city I’ve ever been in. Do you want to go somewhere private?”
“I uh... No, here is fine.”
"Okay.” Danny said. “Cool then. So, these Lazarus Pits? I’ve never seen one, but I have heard of them from other older ghosts. Except we don’t call them that. They’re relatively common in the zone, but the locations are secret, you have to know someone who knows someone ya know?”
“Well, what are they?”
“Distilleries.”
“What?” Red Hood managed to look absolutely flabbergasted even with the full faced motorcycle helmet covering his head.
“Ghosts can’t eat human food, right? I mean we can, but we don’t taste anything. We don’t have the physical parts to digest human food and enjoy it like we did when we were alive.” Danny explained. “It’s the same thing for things like alcohol and drugs and things. So, a lot of adult ghosts still want to get drunk even though they’re dead. I died before 21 so I wouldn’t know, but like, there’s a desire for it.”
“What does this have to do with the Lazarus Pits?”
"Well, in order to make something we can taste, it has to be made with ectoplasm. Alcohol is not as easy to make as other stuff for ghosts. Alcohol is made using fermentation, right? Well ectoplasm doesn’t really. Do that. I mean ectoplasm is either inert or charged with emotional energy, if it gets charged enough it will form a ghost or spirit or something. It’s basically impossible to like, make ectoplasm ferment without risking your alcohol becoming the ghost of wines past.” Danny said, throwing a joke on the end there. Nightwing gave him a smile while Red Hood managed to glare at him through the full red facemask.
“There are ghosts who have figured out how to force ectoplasm to ferment. They basically invented ghost yeast, a sourdough starter of horror if you will. It takes centuries for ectoplasm to get good enough to be considered drinkable alcohol. So, what an enterprising barkeeping ghost will do is find like, an abandoned cave or something, fill it with ectoplasm dump the ghost yeast in there and leave it alone for like a thousand years to ripen. Then they’ll come back, bottle it up and sell it in the zone.” Danny continued.
"Are you telling me Red Hood is ghost drunk?” Nightwing asked.
“I’m saying he has a yeast infection.”
#dpxdc#dp crossover#danny phantom#au where the Lazarus pits are the equivalent of a winery in tuskany.#ghosts leave ectoplasm around to ferment for a millenia or two and then come back to bottle it#the ghost of an ancient vinter ia not gomna be happy when he finds out a bunch of disgusting humans have been bathing in his stock#the same emotion one would have after discovering roaches in the kitchen#red hood being partially dead when he got dumped picked up some ghostly yeast thats been giving him the pit rage#his sour dough starter makes him kill people :(
