After all these years I still love that peppers (Capsicum spp.) are literally neurotoxic berries that evolved to hurt mammals specifically.
Birds don’t chew their food like mammals do, so seeds tend to pass through their digestion systems instead of getting damaged by things like primates and rodents that gnaw at their food, making them the preferred distributers, so the capsaicin acts to keep mammals away.
(And as we all know humans love the neurotoxic burning and decided to have them evolve to be even spicier to the point that they’re possible health hazards.)

i’m immune to gross facts about animal products like sorry but every part of every animal is gross. and so is every aspect of food preparation and so are all natural ingredients. and just like syndrome said when everything is gross nothing is. best wishes

Sometimes I think about Karna and the fact that I was rambling a little while ago about the point of The Menu being “Food is for the Hungry”
And I wonder if I’m going to end up going on a fucking delusional rant about hunger and food and its use in fiction and what it means to me as a person and how famine and pestilence are such important factors in history and war and Karna represents both in a way that so rarely gets humanized in these stories about nobles fighting over titles and names and honour.

✨ HOMEBREW BOTTLING DAY 🎉
my autosiphon arrived in the mail this afternoon so we were off to the races
there were some, um, growing pains vis-a-vis getting it working (spilled about a cup's worth on the floor when a bottle overflowed 💀) but once i got over that it worked really well! didn't cold crash it bc truthfully i forgot to, but i still didn't pull any of the sediment which was great, so i'll call this racking a success.
now, for the important part:
how does it taste?
answer: pretty darn good! i am drinking mine with ice and some homemade lemon syrup i've had sitting around because i've got a sweet tooth, but to my uneducated tongue it definitely tastes wine-ish. not a drastic difference between the apple versus grape that i can tell, but i've mostly been drinking the apple bc i have twice as much of it lol. some carbonation, definitely alcoholic-- i'm already feeling the effects which is so fucking cool, goddamn. i ended up letting this ferment for just under one month, and i think that was the right move, as impatient as i am.

anyway :) today i learned the reason you DON'T do inhalants for fun is that it inhibits a central metabolic pathway at a very basic very essential cellular level (TCA cycle). and that inhibition prevents your cells from doing the one other very basic very essential metabolic pathway they all know how to do too (glycolysis). which means your cells get No energy. to do Anything they need to do. they starve in a very immediate very serious way that doesn't normally happen to them.* so that shit can kill you pretty bad!
#myaa#very cool!#*as opposed to like. missing a couple meals.#your body has systems in place to prevent your cells from immediately dying when hungry. but this is something that does kill them.#found a case study where they attempted to treat a patient#by giving them sugar + insulin. fats. and a buncha stuff to promote fat degradation and prevent lactic acid fermentation#to force glycolysis and tca forward and force the nadh through the etc#i just get very excited when i find a good example of what the students are learning...

i think maybe that’s part of why he acts like that? bc he knows he’s attractive and charismatic so he thinks he can get away with things and he also wants to draw people’s attention to him (so he does it by being a class clown). and maybe that’s why we make many jokes at his expense bc we know he’s ok with it (he’s said so) and it’s not gonna actually deal a hit to his self esteem and he seems to find it funny so he probably plays up some of the stuff like his clumsiness.
