Hua Cheng glares and thinks, 'I can't believe I have to share gege with this stupid dog... As long as gege is happy... but why him?! There's nothing he has that I don't! Keep laughing, I know gege likes me better.'

Feng Xin smiles at Xie Lian. "Dianxia, remember when we were 15 and you—"

"Ack—" Xie Lian cuts him off with a flustered expression. "I think San Lang is better off not knowing that!"

"Understood, it was unexpected, even for Mu Qing and I."

"Ahaha... I don't know what I was thinking back then."

As the two continue talking, Hua Cheng looks suddenly dumbfounded. His loud thoughts take up half the next frame. 'What?!' he thinks. 'There's stuff about gege I don't know?! How can that be?!?! I'm his #1 believer!!" Outwardly, he's smiling calmly. "It's okay, gege can tell me anything."

"It's a little embarrassing," Xie Lian says, still flustered.

In the next frame, Hua Cheng has his arms crossed. "This is how things are going to work," he says. "For every gege fact, I'll give you... 20 minutes of alone time with him."

'Is he fucking serious?! Of course he is,' thinks Feng Xin, irritated. "1 hour or no deal," he says.

"1 hour?! You're lucky I—" Hua Cheng trails off.

The two are sitting on the ground in the next frame, Feng Xin talking animatedly and Hua Cheng nodding and frantically taking notes. Feng Xin says, "And he used to put cherry blossoms in his pillow to smell nice. There's also this spot where he's particularly ticklish—"

In the final frame, Hua Cheng looks at his notes and thinks, '...Not completely useless at least.' Behind him, Xie Lian and Feng Xin are holding hands, Feng Xin drawn with puppy ears and a wagging tail. "Are you two getting along?" asks Xie Lian.

"...Sort of," says Feng Xin. End image description.]

TGCF reread new finds #1

Xie Lian actively and consciously knows that he is attracted to HC the MOMENT THEY MEET in the Ox Cart. Like it’s not just blank gay panic, he knows.

His beauty was deadly like a sword, sharp and mesmerising. Xie Lian only met his eyes for a moment, then lowered his eyes in defeat.

MATE, normally wouldn’t you continue to be mesmerised and can’t peel your eyes away? That is, UNLESS YOURE WHIPPED. XL knows that SL's looks affect him to this degree. Defeat is the key word here.

Making a rich young lad carry your things? Making him sleep in your crappy temple? That doesn't warrant the weighty thought? FORGIVE WHAT SINS Xie Lian??!!!

Many village girls saw (HC) and blushed [...] Xie Lian didn't know what they were going to ask, but felt instinctively that it must be stopped at once, and cried, "No!"

Jealous jealous boi! XL WAS POSSESSIVE after ONE night spent together at Puqi Shrine. Didn’t XL just say to SL that he will have no problem in the love department because girls will throw themselves at him? Yo, why are you cock-blocking? Everyone says HC is insane, no XL is equally insane for the other!

Also, when HC revealed that it's his real skin after the Banyue arc, XL instinctively poked him. Then

He looked at his own finger then hid it away, betraying nothing of his thoughts.

What thoughts XL ?!! Explain yourself right now!

Jumping back to OX CART scene, Xie Lian's character development was foreshadowed when they were talking about the gifting of ghost ashes.

Book 1: Xie Lian sighed. "It certainly is painful to think about, to have given everything for love and lose everything in return."

This is what Xie Lian is most afraid of! Like even thinking back to Xie Lian pushing Feng Xin away in Book 4, he definitely operated under that mindset. Love is a risk, it's something to be feared. Even now 800+ years later, he still feels that way and doesn't allow himself to get close to anyone. It just hits so much harder thinking that he operated under that for so many centuries.

Then Hua Cheng says

"What there to be afraid of? If it were me, I'd have no regrets giving away my ashes"

Which I think really changed the way that Xie Lian thought about love. Book 5 Xie Lian completely operates with Love is empowering and isn't something to be afraid of.

TGCF isn't about XL realising his feelings, literally from Book 1 it's about him wondering if it's worthwhile to act on them.

Three things, is this person worth losing cultivation over for?

He needs the reassurance that this person must reciprocate his feelings.

Then HC changed his perspective on love from FEAR -> EMPOWERMENT.

XL is soooo self-aware (unlike SQQ from SVSSS and WWX from MDZS), he's an unreliable narrator in the way that he doesn't reveal everything to the reader, especially his own feelings until he was absolutely sure that there really was both a physical and romantic attraction. I wanted to make this post to dispel the assumption for XL it was easy to forego 800+ years of cultivation. It was not? He ABSOLUTELY thought about it carefully.

Xianle Quartet game night headcanons

Xie Lian: - he dragged all of them into it so they can 'bond :D' - mediator - makes the teams - explains the rules - loses but is civil about it - happy that they're all together but he falls asleep early, gets dragged into some other room by hua cheng and then the three start the real fun Mu Qing: - came along because 'he didn't have anything else to do' (he missed them) - extremely competitive against everyone - terrible sore loser - will vomit at least once (this is projection by the way) - says he doesn't care if he loses, cries if he does - laughs in triumph every time feng xin gets dealt a shitty hand - tables will be thrown Feng Xin: - not competitive at all but since mu qing and hua cheng are there he's going to give his best - did not pay attention to the rules and someone has to explain it to him 3 times before they begin - shit at card/board games, amazing at sports or twister - curses everyone out - accuses hua cheng of cheating every round - victim of the tables being thrown Hua Cheng: - the luckiest fucker - he wins without even trying and he rubs it in fengqing's faces - gives xie lian his luck under the table and lets him win - laughs his ass off whenever mu qing loses - eradicating every single snack in the house - purposefully loses a single round to give them hope, wipes the floor with them the next one - watches fengqing fight and records them for blackmail - eventually fengqing team up to destroy his ass, they work together for the first time in a decade but he still wins
