Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike, has admitted the government cannot force landlords in the city to reduce rent

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the government cannot force landlords to reduce rent in the city, as the cost of rent is market-driven. He stated that no government puts a cap on rent costs, and that everything has increased due to costs. Wike disagreed with complaints about rent increases and suggested that rent should not be singled out. He also asked if a law should be made to limit the price of a 2-bed room flat to N50,000 or N100,000. Wike stated: “No government puts a cap as regards the cost of rent. It is the market forces. “You are aware that everything has actually increased because of costs. The man who built the house didn’t build that he would not make profit at the end of the day. “I don’t agree with people always complaining about rent increases, there are increases in everything today, so rent should not be singled out. “Do you want us to make a law and say that a 2-bed room flat should not be more than N50,000 or N100,000, for example?” Read the full article

Police intensify security operations in FCT

To ensure a hitch free Yuletide in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Police Command has intensified patrol, joint operations and raid of black spots across the territory. The Commissioner of Police (CP), Bala Ciroma disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja. He said the command had redoubled efforts in the deployment of personnel, surveillance and stop and search operations in the territory. Ciroma said the counter kidnapping operations of the command aimed at dislodging kidnappers and their bases was still ongoing. He said the command would not leave any stone upturned until it rid the FCT of crime and criminality, adding that the ban on fireworks/knockouts was still in place. The CP called on the public to ensure proper scrutiny of domestic applicants, drivers, house help and security guards before employment. He said the call was in view of the new trend of crimes committed by domestic employees against employers and family members. Ciroma said that a total of 53 suspects were arrested by the command over various criminal activities in the last one month. He said one suspect, 29, was arrested on Dec. 8 by operatives from the command along Kwali-Rubochi axis over kidnapping. The CP said two suspects, aged 42 years and 34 years, were also arrested on Dec. 9 over attempt to kidnap their employees. Ciroma said four suspects were on Dec. 5 arrested by the anti-kidnapping squad attached to the command over car theft. He said the suspects had confessed to have stolen 54 vehicles within the FCT during investigation. The CP said that 34 fabricated master keys, two network jammers, three sledge hammers, 11 screw drivers, two towing vans and other items were recovered from the suspects. Ciroma said that three suspects were arrested on Oct. 28 by a special anti-robbery squad attached to the command over cultism. He said the suspects had confessed to belong to Arrow Vikings Confraternity during investigation, but added that efforts were being made to arrest the leader of the gang. The CP said that the anti-cultism squad attached to the command had also arrested 13 suspects during an initiation party into Arrow Baga Sarakusa Marine, a secret cult. He said the items recovered from the suspects were two initiation pots, several clothes badged with the cult emblem, initiation beads, red clothes, one large printed banner carrying the cult name and one rubber gun. Again, one person adopted in Kuje, as kidnappers demand N15m ransom -NigPilot

Gunmen on Sunday night again kidnapped one person in Pegi community, in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory  FCT. Chairman of Pegi Community Development Association PECDA, Isaac Aderibigbe said the attack on the community is becoming worrisome as residents now live in perpetual fear. He added that, the unknown gunmen, who were in army fatigue shot in the air and forceful stopped cars on their way home. Unfortunately, Mr Laide Muhammad  was not lucky enough as he saw whisked away and a ransom of 15 million Naira was demanded for his release. He said; "I was coming back home, as I got to where the tiled road was terminated and there are heap of sand, on my way to 1000 units gate, Pegi. "I noticed that people were sitting on bare ground and some people were standing, this to me was a red flag, I told my passenger that, this is not right so I put my car on reverse, a man came out from the bush with machete and hit the back of my car asking me to stop, I just continued to reverse. "As I was reversing I heard one of the kidnappers  giving order in Hausa language, that they should not shoot becàuse if they shoot they will alert other motorists and residents. " Unfortunately, my car entered a dicth so I came down and continued running toward Kuje town where I started turning other motorists back and one of the cars now picked me. We called the Divisional Police Officer for Pegi, who came and helped remove the car. I am still shaky and scared after that experience", he said. Nigerian Pilot learnt that one of the victims who narrowly escaped from the kidnappers on his way home from work that does not want his name mentioned, added that he noticed some men in Army uniforms which is very unusual in the area, around 9pm on Sunday night. It was further gathered that one other person who also escaped heard the gunmen speaking in Hausa threatening to strike during the day time since most people now return home before evening, he said. Shiites defy police order, stage procession

Despite the proscription of the group, members of the Shiites Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, have defied police order by embarking on its Ashura morning procession in Abuja on Tuesday morning. The Ashura procession is an annual religious ritual carried out by the Shia Islamic sect all over the world on September 10. Participants including men, women, and children held the procession for a few kilometres from Berger Roundabout to Wuse, and hurriedly concluded the exercise to avoid a confrontation with security personnel. As early as 8.0am, Shiites members were already on the road for about 25 minutes and caused traffic gridlock in the commercial area, but there was no report of any incident. The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu had on Monday said that any procession by the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) amounted to terrorism. A statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, said it has come to the knowledge of the Nigeria Police Force that some members of the proscribed IMN intended to embark on a nationwide procession, ostensibly to cause disruption of public peace, order and security in the Country. “The Force notes that in line with the Terrorism (Prevention) Proscription Order Notice 2019 of 26th July, 2019, the activities of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have been proscribed. Consequently, all gathering or procession by the group remains ultimately illegal and will be treated as a gathering in the advancement of terrorism. “To this end, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, has directed the Commissioners of Police in all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja as well as their supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to put in place concrete measures to avert any planned procession and/or disruption of public peace by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, anywhere in the country. “The IGP also enjoins the public to avail the Force with useful information as regards the activities of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria. “In addition, the IGP has also advised parents and guardians to prevail on their children and wards not to be cajoled into embarking on illegal and ill-motivated activities by anyone or group of persons, under any guise whatsoever,” the statement said.
