Unfortunately, bad news for all comic book fans, the genius artist for Disney comics, Maximino Tortajada Aguilar, passed away last week. He is from Spain and is the brother of the equally brilliant artist José Miguel Tortajada Aguilar who is also an artist working for Disney and Egmont editing Disney comics. While José Miguel worked more on Mickey Mouse comics, Maximino Tortajada Aguilar worked more on Donald Duck comics combining various styles depending on the publisher and given outcomes. He was born on 24-X-1961 in Barcelona, and he started his career back in 1980 and continued his career until this year. He also drew on the OG Ducktales comics, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin and other Disney cartoons that made it into the comics, as he also drew for Egmont drawing for Dutch and Scandinavian comics. He is certainly one of my favorite artists and it is a great shame that he left us on August 20th of this year. Unfortunately, there is not much information about him, except on the Lambiek encyclopedia, and I learned about his death on the Inducks Discord from a friend of mine as well as here: https://www.tebeosfera.com/autores/tortajada_aguilar_maximino.html
lso bad news for all fans of Disney (Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck) comics. Yesterday, the genius artist for Disney comics, who did commission art, Sergio Asteriti, died. He was born on February 13, 1930 in Venice, and began his career in 1952. "Sergio Asteriti was born in Venice, and studied at the Scuola di Magistero d'Arte, section Publicity. In 1952, he moved to Milan, where he was employed by the advertising agency S.P.I.N.T.A. The agency folded two years later, and Asteriti turned to comics. He made his comics debut with the 'Bingo Bongo' series at the publishing house Alpe in 1955. He soon expanded his activities and did illustration work for various publishers and magazines. Asteriti joined the art studios of Roy d'Ami in the late 1950s. There, he drew for the British Fleetway agency ('Fun in Toyland', 'Freddie Frog', etc.) and for Il Corriere dei Piccoli, where he took over the 'Formichino' series from Roberto Sgrilli.
Asteriti has been an artist of Disney comics for Topolino since 1963. From 1974, he also took on the writing of Disney stories. He has mainly done stories with 'Mickey Mouse', but also other characters, such as 'Uncle Scrooge', 'Super Goof', 'Gilbert', 'Tanti Auguri', 'The Prince and the Pauper', 'Indiana Pips'." Taken from the Lambiek encyclopedia. He certainly contributed a lot to the Mickey Mouse universe. He died on August 27, 2024. Kudos to him for his truly outstanding work! Rest in peace! Amen.

Today marks the 61st anniversary of Sylvia Plath’s death! RIP!
Sylvia Plath 27 October 1932 Jamaica Plain, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - 11 February 1963, Primrose Hill, London, England, United Kingdom
"I want to live each day for itself like a string of colored beads, and not kill the present by cutting it up in cruel little snippets to fit some desperate architectural draft for a taj mahal in the future."

Let's Read Peanuts (Only 45 more years to go!) – February 1955
There are lots of great strips I just don't have room to comment on. I strongly encourage everybody to read the full month at the official GoComics page. Today's month starts HERE.
February 1, 1955

And that's the last we see of Charlotte Braun.
I feel like she might have worked as a character if Schulz had actually played up the angle of them looking so much alike. He could have used those parallels to draw attention to the ways that Charlie Brown interacts with the world and why he struggles so much (and why Charlotte doesn't). Or he could have played up the similarities in their personalities in order to make Charlie Brown deal with his own bullshit from the other side of things. It could have been a really good angle in the right hands.
Oh well.

I was going to say something or other about how Snoopy is talking out loud here but then I got completely sidetracked by the fact that Charlie Brown's house is canonically purple.

...the hell?
~googles~
OK, so apparently "parity" is a term in agriculture for a guarantee the government makes ensuring that a farmer will make back a certain percentage of their expenses. The government sets a “parity index” based on how much certain commodities cost to make at a certain point in time and then sets rules on minimum prices based on a percentage of that index price (in Charlie Brown's case, 90%). Doing this protects smaller farmers from getting undersold into extinction by larger organizations or regional cost differences.
And now you know!

There will be ~so many~ strips of Snoopy pretending to be various animals. I hope you're prepared.

Lucy, the Beethoven shrine should really be a wake up call that you might be dodging a bullet here.

Holy shit, look at his eyes. She crushed this poor kid's soul.
Thoughts:
RIP to a real one.
She will be missed. By somebody. Probably.

Today in Computer History (02/14/2024):
Today is Valentine’s Day, which means we say a very special happy birthday to the ENIAC! Today, February 14th 2024, the first ever electric, programmable, general purpose digital computer turns 79 years old!
Tumblr media
(Picture via University of Pennsylvania)
Completed in 1945, the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was the first computer to integrate all its features into one unit. The ENIAC took up more than 1,800 square feet and weighed over 27 ton, and was made up of 40 panels, 17,000 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, 1,500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, and over 5,000,000 hand-soldered joints. These numbers have gotten bigger over time, of course. Today, a single stick of 4gb RAM has somewhere in the ballpark of 32 billion capacitors.
The ENIAC could perform up to 5,000 additions or 50 multiplications per second, with a clock speed of around 100 kilohertz. It calculated trajectories 40 times faster than humans could. For additional context by modeling calculators, the classic Ti-84 plus (2004), one of the most used calculators to this day, has a clock speed of 15 megahertz, 150 times faster than the ENIAC.
The ENIAC was the first dive into digital calculators in the modern age, retired in 1955 at ten years old. And nearly eight decades later, we now carry devices with calculators in our pockets. The ENIAC was thousands of times bigger than the largest smartphones on the modern market, and part of it is on display at the University of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania.

Votive ship in the St. Nicolai church, Boldixum/Föhr, 1955
This votive ship, was donated in honour of Kobis Justus Christiansen (20 July 1887- 27 January 1904), who drowned while serving as a ship's boy. He was washed off the Australian coast by a tall ship. The ship was donated by his older brother, the retired captain and police commissioner Carl Friedrich Christiansen (24 February 1884 - 2 May 1969), to honour his little brother.

Johanna Alexandra "Lotte" Jacobi was a German-American photographer.
Born in Thorn (Toruń) in Prussia (now in Poland), she was the eldest of three children. She spent parts of her life in Berlin (1925-1935), New York City (1935-1955), and New Hampshire (1955-1990). Her portraits of celebrated subjects included Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, Robert Frost, Marc Chagall, Eleanor Roosevelt, Alfred Stieglitz, J.D. Salinger, Paul Robeson, May Sarton, Pauline Koner, Berenice Abbott and Edward Steichen.
The name "Lotte" was a nickname given to her by her father. She always used it professionally and was never known by her birth name outside her family. In 1916 she married Fritz Honig, and a year later she gave birth to a son, John. The marriage did not last, and in 1924 they divorced. She put her son in school in Bavaria and went to school herself in Munich.
After completing her formal studies (1925 – 1927), Jacobi entered the family photography business in 1927. During this same period (1926–27) she began her professional work as a photographer, and she also produced four films, the most important being Portrait of the Artist, a study of Josef Scharl. From October 1932 to January 1933, she traveled to the Soviet Union, in particular to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, taking photographs of what she saw. She returned to Berlin in February 1933, one month after Hitler came to power. As persecution against Jews increased, she left Germany with her son, arriving in September 1935 in New York City, where she opened a studio in Manhattan.
Jacobi continued to photograph through the early 1980s. She died in her home in Deering, New Hampshire, in 1990. Wikipedia

While the Agency (CIA) was making its final preparations for U-2 overflights, the Air Force started a reconnaissance project that would cause considerable protest around the world and threaten the existence of the U-2 overflight program before it even began.  Project GENETRIX involved the use of camera-carrying balloons to obtain high-altitude photography of Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the People’s Republic of China.  This project had its origins in a RAND Corporation study from 1951.  By the end of 1955, the Air Force had overcome a number of technical problems in camera design and recovery techniques and had manufactured a large number of balloons for use in the project.  President Eisenhower gave his approval on 27 December 1955, and two weeks later the launches from bases in Western Europe began.  By the end of February 1956, the Air Force had launched a total of 516 balloons.
Project GENETRIX was much less successful than its sponsors had hoped.  Once launched, the balloons were at the mercy of the prevailing winds, and many tended to drift towards southern Europe and then across the Black Sea and the desert areas of China.  These balloons therefore missed the prime target areas, which lay in the higher latitudes.  Large numbers of balloons did not succeed in crossing the Soviet Union and China, some because they were shot down by hostile aircraft, others because they prematurely extended their ballast supplies and descended too soon.  Only 46 payloads were eventually recovered (one more a year later and the last not until 1958) from the 516 balloons that had been launched.  In four of these payloads the camera had malfunctioned, and in another eight the photography was of no intelligence value.  Thus, only 34 balloons succeeded in obtaining useful photographs. This amounted to more than 13,000 exposures with most of the coverage in Siberia and northern China.
The low success rate of project GENETRIX balloons was not the only problem encountered; far more serious was the storm of protest and unfavorable publicity that the balloon overflights provoked.  Although the Air Force had issued a cover story that the balloons were being used for weather research connected with the International Geophysical Year, Eastern European nations protested strongly to the United States and to international aviation authorities, claiming that the balloons endangered civilian aircraft.  The Soviet Union sent strongly worded protest notes to the United States and the nations from which the balloons had been launched.  The Soviets also collected numerous polyethylene gasbags, camera payloads, and transmitters from GENETRIX balloons and put them on display in Moscow for the world press.
All of this publicity and protest led President Eisenhower to conclude that "the balloons give more legitimate grounds for irritation than could be matched by the good obtained from them", and he ordered the project halted.  On 7 February 1956 Secretary of State Dulles informed the Soviet Union that no more "weather research" balloons would be released, but he did not offer an apology for the overflights.
Despite the furor caused by GENETRIX, Air Force Chief of Staff Twining proposed yet another balloon project only five weeks later, in mid-March 1956.  This project would employ even higher flying balloons than GENETRIX and would be ready in 18 months.  President Eisenhower informed the Air Force, however, that he was "not interested in any more balloons".
Although the photo intelligence gained from Project GENETRIX was limited in quality, it was still some of the best and most complete photography obtained of the Soviet Union since World War II.  It was referred to as "pioneer" photography because it provided a baseline for all future overhead photography.  Even innocuous photos of such things as forests and streams proved valuable in later years when U-2 and satellite photography revealed construction activity.

I regret to say that most of the Alito Six are NOT geriatric.
Clarence Thomas = 75 ( born June 23, 1948 )
Samuel Alito = 73 ( born April 1, 1950 )
John Roberts = 68 (born January 27, 1955)
Brett Kavanaugh = 58 (born February 12, 1965)
Neil Gorsuch = will be 56 in a month (born August 29, 1967)
Amy Coney Barrett = 51 (born January 28, 1972)
Thomas and Alito are elderly. Roberts is a senior citizen, but not that old.  And the other three are middle-aged.
Which means that, realistically, Roberts, Kavanaugh, Gorsuch and Barrett could be implementing appalling decisions for the next 30 to 40 years.
