Sketching Chapter 2.8.5 - It Is Not Enough To Be A Drunkard To Be Immortal

1. Fauchelevent was planning on getting the gravedigger drunk so Valjean could be dug out of the coffin. Except the gravedigger he was friends with died. The new gravedigger Gribier is a) apparently a lot smarter (and has a higher education, that's mentioned a lot) and b) not a man who drinks. He is a scribe and probably has some literary ambitions, but that Vicky didn't say, I'm saying. He has two jobs to feed his kids. It didn't occur to Fauvent to offer to pay for the drinks because he's an indecisive man and indecision stops him on his tracks a lot.
2. I fucking haaaaate Gribier. Not in this chapter but I hate him from what he'll do soon in the book. Fucking asshole.
3. There was a whole deal about how Vaugirard Cemetery is decadent because the Père Lachaise is all the rage these days. And also some info about how the gravedigger gets past the gatekeeper at night after the gate is closed with a gravedigger card (hmmm I wonder if this will be important later)
4. Seriously I hate him. He's funny now but I hate him.
5. I forgot to mention that last chapter Victor Hugo ranted about how you open a door for a cat and the cat will just stay still, looking at the door. Can relate. This is probably a metaphor about revolution since the people of Paris are cats and the Lion is freedom or something. But firstly it was just to say Fauchelevent is indecisive and also to make a fanfic scenario of Jean Valjean reassuring Fauchelevent with his calm and his smile that lights up the world like a winter's dawn.

19. The Man with the Bell
"One hundred francs!" The man gave a start and raised his eyes. "You can earn a hundred francs," went on Jean Valjean, "if you will grant me shelter for this night." The moon shone full upon Jean Valjean's terrified countenance. "What! so it is you, Father Madeleine!" said the man. - Vol 5, book 5, chapter 9

If he left Cosette on the cold stone floor, she could die due to hypothermia, so Valjean asked that gardener for a place to sleep. But that gardener was Fauchelevent, that man Valjean saved from cart accident. This place was Convent of Petit-Picpus, where people from outside couldn't enter easily, especially for men. However, he was there because they needed a gardener, and Valjean as Madeleine gave that work for him because he broke his leg.

He said he had a daughter, and Cosette was laid in Fauchlevent's bed. He wanted to reward Valjean something, so they spent a night. Vealjean and Fauchelevent kept a talk, and Fauvent(Fauchelevent's name called by the nuns there) told he needed that bell because there were lots of students who were not allowed to meet men, even the fathers of the convent. However, that was great for Valjean, since at least Cosette didn't have to return that inn. He also asked Favent about working together as a gardener, since he had to hide somewhere. Since he was getting older, he needed another gardener to work with, so he agreed, and would introduce him as his brother, Ultime. But then, a bell rang, and he had to see the mother prioress.

Mother Innocente, the head of this convent told Fauvent that one of their nuns, Mother Crucifixion died. And her last wish was buried underneath this convent. That was a simple problem, but it was illegal. She had to be buried in a cemetery outside of the convent. So they had to think another plan.

Meanwhile, Valjean and Cosette also needed to get out, because they did not come from the door. And still, there were Javert's forces surrounding the Convent. Therefore, they need to be unseen. Since Cosette was a little child, Fauchlevent could carry her in a large basket, but Valjean was an adult. They need something to hide Valjean.

Valjean remembered Mother Crucifixion's problem, and he would get inside of 'fake' coffin and get out of the wall. Fauvent told him it was very dangerous for him to do that thing, but Valjean had no other options to get out of that convent without being noticed by everyone. And Fauvent told he knew Father Mestienne, who was a gravedigger and hard drunkard, and he would give Mestienne some wine and when he was drunk, he promised to take him out.

First, Fachlevent took Cosette inside of the basket and got outside of the convent. Gendarmerie soldiers didn't care about him because he was the man inside of the convent.

And Mother Crucifixion's coffin was finally laid under the convent. Everything was ready.

20. Cemeteries Take That Which is Committed Them
"By the way, you new man, have you your card?" The grave-digger paused. "What card?" "The sun is on the point of setting." "That's good, it is going to put on its nightcap." "The gate of the cemetery will close immediately." "Well, what then?" "Have you your card?" "Ah! my card?" said the grave-digger. Vol 2, book 8, chapter 7.

Now everything was set up for Father Fauchelevent's plan. Cosette was already safely taken out of the convent, waiting her papa on a fruit store. Later, Mother Crucifixion's fake coffin, carrying Valjean also got out of the convent, even watched by Javert, but he did not notice who was there. Fauvent and Valjean headed to a cemetery.

But Mestienne wasn't there, because he was dead. Instead, a young new digger called Gribier was in his place. Though a person changed, Fauvent tried the same way he treated Mestienne, but this new digger is super-sober and the sabotage did not work. Soon, Valjean literally buried alive.

But then, Fauchelevent noticed Gribier's card for entering the cemetery, and sneakily grabbed it out of his pocket and asked about having that card. Of course, he did not have the card, and he needed to return because he would charged fine.

Fauvent opened the coffin, but there were no answers. He even thought he killed Madeleine. But soon, he got up from faint. Since the inside of the coffin was cold, Fauchelevent gave some brandy. At last, he gave Gribier the card back, and he said he found it on the ground and finished the grave. Later, he gathered Valjean and Cosette.

oh I forgot to talk about this today OKAY
1. Story goes: Fauchelevent comes back to his shanty to find Valjean and Cosette by the fire, Valjean is telling Cosette how she will be smuggled out and reassuring her he will come back to get her. Fauvent tells them he got permission to bring them in but he needs to smuggle Valjean out tonight. Then, Valjean comes up with the plan to be carried out by the empty coffin of Mother Crucifixion that will be taken to the Vaugirard cemetery.
2. "Jean Valjean had one of those rare smiles that came over him like a sunrise in winter." HIGH TIER QUOTE ALERT. Also can I point out that he is smiling about getting buried alive? ok cool. But also he is smiling like that to Fauchelevent and why does every interaction Valjean has with other men read like fanfic??? Fauchelevent held his hand devoutly at least three times by now. It's weird, Vic. No other character was written like that not even wolf boy himself.
3. I made this drawing in like 2 minutes at 3am because I didn't want to miss my daily post just as I mentioned I hadn't missed a day yet. Otherwise I think I would've put way more effort into it tbh
4. Valjean's handy prison abilities (well in this case the ability to not be claustrophobic nailed inside a coffin for a couple hours) made a comeback. He has that trait of macgyvering his way out of plot contrivances which is genius of Hugo's part. "How did he learn that???? oh he was in prison a long time" and no need to explain further. Makes me think if Valjean was always supposedd to have been a convict originally. Like was Vicky's first idea to write about a former convict or not? OR maybe it was about a soldier from Napoleon's army or maybe even a runaway exile??? Well it's unlikely but I like to think there is some universe where les mis is about Georges Pontmercy's adventures in Paris. (And he adopts Cosette and she meets Marius when Georges dies and SHE INTRODUCES MARIUS TO BONAPARTISM HOW IS THAT FOR AN AU) (only problem is that Valjean wouldn't be Saved by Love without Cosette so idk. But I like the thought)
Sketching Chapter 2.8.4 - In Which Jean Valjean Looks As Though He Has Read Austin Castillejo
