Parakeet by Marie-Helene Bertino. 3/5. A trippy and ultimately comforting book. A bride is visited by her dead grandmother (now a parakeet) and it gets weirder from there, with the magical realism allowing her to explore her relationships and truths and desires in life. It also features (spoiler alert) a gorgeous coming out of her sister as transgender and highlights the confidence such a change can generate and the difference that living such truths can make in relationships. I liked it and think I’ll re-read it at some point. It’s a little out of my go-to book type, but definitely worth it (and that summary, title, and cover can’t be beat). #95 of 2020.

@agentariannagrace
Farrar came through the door, covered head to toe in splatters of blood. Nilza had asked for help clearing a rather large nest, and it definitely was not his preferred way to spend a day. He’d had to wait until it got dark before driving back, given it looked like he’d taken part in a damn slasher film gone real life. He gave a tired smile to Arianna on the sofa, and went straight to the bathroom, cutting on the water and stepping into the stream clothes on as soon as the water warmed up.
Once he was satisfied every inch was no longer bloodied, he stepped out the shower, grabbing a towel off the rack and wrapping it about his waist. Kneeling to check under the cabinet to see if housekeeping kept any spare trash bags under the sink he could stick the wet clothes in until he could go to the laundry room, he paused. There wasn’t anything under the sink besides some spare toilet paper...and an opened box of pregnancy tests? He picked it up, pulling out one, the digital screen reading ‘yes’. He could only stare at it, finally dropping it back in the box and replacing it under the sink slowly.
Stepping out the bathroom, hair pushed back and still dripping, he opened his mouth, then paused fingers to his lips in thought, staring at Arianna, before finally speaking. “I know this isn’t the greatest in the way of motels...but I have a really hard time thinking that they would leave trash...is there something you were planning on telling me, mo grá?” he inquired with furrowed brows.

The plaintiff, after settling with the family trust for $400,000, had no power to change the beneficiary to himself. He would have had no need for money to help with the payment of legal fees. “It was just something fun. It looked pretty. I took a picture of it and it got shared and we thought, ‘Oh it will go away.’ It didn’t go away,” said Deanna Farrar, Owner Pine Mountain Country Coffee House, and Mercantile, to FOX2[5].
The sweet-and-salty pairing was started by Farrar, who tried ice cream with pickles and chocolate sauce as a dare when she was 17-years-old — and fell in love.
Though Farrar had kept her bizarre pickles and ice cream dessert habit to herself, her husband, with whom she owns the coffee house, teased her into putting it on the menu.

“Omg!! This is soooooo good!! Its a "PICKLE SPILT "! New creation I made of crazy and awesome all in one! Instead of bananas its pickle spears!” the couple wrote on the company’s Facebook page of the new item.
The split, which comes like a traditional banana split, has vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice cream scoops topped with whipped cream, cherries and a pickle spear on each side.
Since dreaming up the dish, it has taken off with people raving about the bizarre combination on their Facebook[7] page.

“I ate the entire thing, no guilt here ;) it was amazing!” one guest claimed.
“Yes please!” another wrote.
“Need one ASAP,” one more said on Facebook.
“We gotta have one of these! HURRY UP AND LET'S GOOOOO! Lol,” added another hungry commenter.

Though it isn't everyone's cup of brine. Several on Facebook said they would stick with the bananas.
If you’re interested in trying the now-popular dish, don’t worry, Farrar has said it’s on the menu to stay. Though, if Festus is a little out of your way, you can always settle for a home-made version, too.

‘It actually took down our mailbox,’ Cass County resident captures video of flash flood
DREXEL, Mo. — A woman woke up in shock this morning when she looked outside and saw flood waters covering her driveway and the road beyond.
Bailey Farrar, a resident who took video of the flash flood rushing across her front yard, said she just moved to Drexel this summer. She’s never seen flooding like this before.
“Am I going to be able to leave? Am I going to be stuck here?” Farrar said.
The waters fell just as quickly as they rose. However, it left some damage in its wake.
“It actually took down our mailbox,” Farrar said. “Our neighbors mailbox is still up, but ours fell over and it`s in the ditch.”
But this probably isn’t the end for flash flooding over Labor Day weekend. Meteorologists are expecting flash flood warnings to extend for the next few days after several inches of rain fell over the past two days.
In Missouri, the state’s transportation department is reporting that about 40 roads are closed because of flooding, mostly in the western party of the state.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook to acknowledge several roadways were reportedly under water. They are warning residents to be careful of possible damage caused by the flooding.

Politics are almost inherent, if not overt, when bands play in the Washington, D.C., area. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard 1960s protest songs played — often with an extra dose of passion — as encores at shows.
Son Volt, the alt-rock/alt-country band led by Jay Farrar, didn’t need covers to weigh in on the state of our country Sunday at the 9:30 Club. More than half of the band’s new album, “Union,” deals with the state of the state as Farrar sees it.
And that state, starting with show opener “The 99,” is not good. Farrar’s anthem name checks protests over the Dakota Pipeline and the Ferguson, Mo. shooting that occurred near his St. Louis home and blasts those who allow “desecration of the land for the almighty dollar.”
While seeming to channel Roy Orbison in looks, complete with long bangs and sunglasses that never came off, Farrar’s lyrics and the band’s sound brought to mind Woody Guthrie via The Byrds and Tom Petty. Those references are not an insult; if anything, hearing the career spanning mix from Son Volt’s eight album, 23-year history showed how consistent the band has been despite numerous personnel changes.
Live, what impressed me most is how the new mix of songs on “Union” complement its back catalogue. The reason of course, is Farrar. He let the lyrics and music speak for itself throughout the 1-hour, 40-minute show, speaking little if at all between songs. The current Son Volt lineup — Andrew Duplantis (bass, backing vocals), Mark Patterson (drums), Chris Frame (guitar) and Mark Spencer (keyboard, steel guitar) — provided strong and richly textured support throughout.
“Union,” of course, dominated much of the show’s first half with six cuts, including “Reality Winner” (about a decorated veteran serving jail time for leaking confidential documents) as well as the less topical “Devil May Care” and “The Reason.” A personal favorite was “The Picture,” which fit the mood even though it was written more than a decade ago for 2007’s “The Search.”
Famously founded after Farrar and Jeff Tweedy split up Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt’s debut album — 1995’s “Trace” — remains perhaps its best known. Not surprisingly, the band saved songs from “Trace” until the show’s end, performing “Route,” “Drown,” a beautiful and chilling “Tear Stained Eye,” and set closer “Windfall” in a cluster broken up only by the rocker “Afterglow 61” (from 2005’s “Okemah and Melody of Riot”). . http://sonvolt.net/
Ian Noe, a 24-year-old Kentucky native whose debut album Between the Country, will be released May 31, set the stage for the band with a series of original songs and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.” Noe’s album was produced by Dave Cobb, and he is scheduled to open this summer on tours with both Blackberry Smoke and Jamestown Revival, so you’ll likely hear more about him this year. https://www.iannoe.com/

Farrar shrugged. “No reason with being concerned. I’ve done it for over half my life at this point, a stór. It just…is at this point. It’s what I know,” he said with nonchalance. He didn’t usually admit to being a hunter but seemed as good a test as any to see what kind of person she was, and how wide her realm of possibility was.
Arianna reached out to him, taking his hand in hers. “I’m concerned because I care, mo grá. Because you deserve to have something good in your life. And you deserve to wake up safe.”
He snorted, scoffing lightly. “And if I don’t, others don’t wake up safe. Can’t be stopping. I’ve done nothing to deserve goodness,” he said with a wry smile, shrugging a shoulder, thumb running along the back of her hand. His eyes didn’t carry the levity with which he spoke, however.
“You’ve kept us safe for your whole life, mo grá. That alone is worth goodness.” She brought their hands to her lips, pressing a kiss to his. “And I’ll spend every day reminding you that you deserve to be happy.”
“It’s just a day. Then I hit the hay again. The waking up to non-human eyes is kind of normal at this point.”
“I don’t know if I should be concerned or proud about that.”

Ultima cosa. A mo’ di epigrafe e di chiave di volta.
1967:Pier Paolo Pasolini fa visita a Ezra Pound
“Ezra Pound è l’uomo più difficile del ventesimo secolo”. Mentre in Italia attendiamo una nuova traduzione dei Cantos – l’attuale, tradotta con dedizione dalla figlia Mary, giace nei ‘Meridiani’ Mondadori: sogniamo una traduzione composta da un pool di poeti italiani – negli Stati Uniti un libro mette l’indice nell’ulcera della ‘follia’ di Pound. Scritto da Daniel Swift, insegnante al New College of the Humanities e articolista per il New York Times, il tomo The Bughouse: The Poetry, Politics, and Madness of Ezra Pound (Farrar, Straud and Giroux, pp.320, $ 27.00), ripercorre gli anni bastardi del poeta, dal 1946 al 1958.

Revitalizing History
A Seamless Juncture: New Construction in a Historic Setting
When creating and building new masonry structures in Kansas City Proper, it is extremely important to make certain that existing ones are complimented. It is vital that the historical character of a property be retained and preserved. The removal of distinctive materials or alteration of features that characterize a property should be avoided.
Respect for the original architectural design or architect must remain steadfast. Great care needs to be taken to ensure that new construction shall be compatible with the historic materials, features, size, scale and proportion to protect the integrity of the property and its environment. The new construction must be undertaken in such a manner that, if removed in the future, the essential form and candor of the historic property would be unscathed. Kansas City has a long history of great architects, including: Shepard, Farrar, Wiser, Alice Walton, Edward Delk, Root and Siemens, Smith, Rea and Lovitt, Howe, Hoit and Cutler, John Van Brunt, Adriance Van Brunt, and Courtlandt Van Brunt.
The Masons Co. is a Kansas City Masonry contractor whose company is built on expertise from being passionately entrenched in the trade of masonry for thirty years. High standards and an innate passion for the craft ensures a completed project that is prolific and gratifying to the homeowner or commercial property owner.

INDIE BAND OF THE WEEK - AMBERSTEIN
Forming in 2013, Amberstein has started their own version of Rock & Roll. In 2014, they released their first EP, which helped them gain a festival slot at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Enjoy this interview with Amberstein, only at RockRevolt Magazine!
Who are you and what is your role in the band?
I am Andrew Farrar and I play Drums and do vocals.
I am Jake Warne and I do lead vocals and play bass.
I am Jason Paulsen and I play guitar and also do vocals.
How did the band get started?
ANDREW: Jake started a project with Ross Machurick, the band’s former guitarist. Andrew met Jake through a mutual friend in Waukesha and the group started to write music together. Meanwhile, Jason, Andrew’s best friend growing up, was serving in the US Navy stationed in Guam. After completing his term of duty, Jason returned stateside and immediately fit in as the band’s fourth and final member. After Ross took a job in Minneapolis, the band returned to its original trio glory… and the rest is history.
JAKE: I started the band in my senior year of college with a friend from my hometown (Ross Machurick, guitar). My partner at my summer job (grounds keeping on campus) went to High School and played on drumline with both Andrew and Jason. He introduced me to Andrew, who joined on drums, and when Jason came home from the Navy he got close to the band right away, playing guitar as our fourth member. Eventually the Ross moved away and Jason took over as our lead guitarist. Both Andrew and Jason are strong singers, so everything worked out perfectly to be best trio we could be, complete with 3 part harmonies.
JASON: Jake and Andrew had a blind date, and history was made.
Who are your influences and how do they play a role in your sound?
ANDREW: I am a huge fan of technical drummers like Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater and Morgan Rose of Sevendust. In addition to my background in orchestral and marching percussion, listening to these drummers play deliberate notes on their kits inspired me to make drumming as musical and emotive an art as possible.
JAKE: As a singer my biggest influences have to be Alter Bridge and Shinedown with both of their singers, Myles Kennedy and Brent Smith, having similar styles and vocal ranges to mine. I also think both of them are great songwriters with strong melodies and well written lyrics. Other favorites include Bob Dylan, Foo Fighters, Thirty Seconds To Mars, U2, and Ozzy Osbourne.
JASON: SRV, Dimebag Darrell, Doug Aldrich, Frank Hannon, so many more. They all inspired me to pick up the guitar and just keep getting better. I remember the first album I was able to play all the way through with was Tesla’s Time’s Makin’ Changes album, I was hooked at a young age. Also loved to watch videos of SRV play, and then play back to them.
What has been your most meaningful experience being in this band so far?
ANDREW: We played a show in the Dells and went out to a bar afterwards. At the bar, a fan who saw us at a previous show recognized us and approached us asking, “are you guys in that killer-trio band, Amberstein?” My heart melted…
JAKE: I think the most meaningful thing for me is seeing people sing along. Whether we’re at a tiny show with ten people, playing at the world’s largest music festival, or opening for a national headliner, nothing beats seeing people sing along with our lyrics.
JASON: Road trips in the summer of 2016, quality time with my mates.
Favorite memory from a show you’ve played or a place you’ve travelled?
ANDREW: We played a show in Green Bay Wisconsin at an awesome venue called Big and Rich. The fans there were incredible, and they really connected with our music. We played outside on probably the hottest day of the summer, and right before we went on stage, the sun set below the nearby tree-line, saving us all from having heat stroke and third-degree sunburn.
JAKE: The first time we played Maybash (Summer Music Festival in Rio, WI). As soon as our set ended, a very strong thunderstorm rolled through and everything shut down while people weathered the storm in their campsites. Instead of packing everything up and waiting it out inside of our vehicles, we lowered our merch tent as short as it goes and tied everything down the best we could. We huddled under the tent with some of our closest fans, and played card (drinking) games until the storm passed over. I don’t think any of us have ever been outside during such a strong storm in our lives, but it definitely made for a great memory.
JASON: St. Louis, MO. Playing with our friends in the band Discrepancies at Cicero’s, then the party afterwards. It was one of the best nights of my life, and I got to hang out with my best friends.
What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
ANDREW: I want to write and share songs that truly embody who I am as a person. The message of our music is one of perseverance and realizing your potential, things that I think everyone runs the risk of looking back on and feeling unfulfilled or unaccomplished.
JAKE: I want to inspire people. I want to write & sing the songs that people build memories with. I want someone to hear a song of ours and feel something. I think of the bands that I listened to growing up, and every time I hear one of their songs I’m instantly transported back to that time of my life. I want our music to do that for someone else.
JASON: I hope our music reaches out to people. I hope that it does to people what music has done for me all of my life. I don’t know where I’d be mentally without music. Scary to think about.
Something about you that no one knows?
ANDREW: I can’t tell you because then you would know.
JAKE: I don’t drive a mini-van. I drive a large vehicle that can comfortably seat up to 8.
JASON: I have really bad anxiety when changing my guitar strings/ tuning my guitars, what if it snaps and goes into my eyeball or something?
What is next for the band?
ANDREW: We are finishing up the writing process for a full length, then we plan to record the whole doggone thing.
JAKE: Right now we are obsessed with writing and planning for a full length album. Lots of other things are happening, and we’ve got a ton to look forward to, but the full length album is #1.
JASON: Writing music, and planning for a full length album in 2017
Anything else you want to add?
ANDREW: Life is too short to allow conventional measures of success to deter you from pursuing your dreams. Jump when you get the chance.
JAKE: #OccupyALocalVenue
JASON: Caffeine is the lifeblood of Amberstein
Connect with Amberstein:
