Meet Pirate! He was surrendered to my local petco (alongside two female mice and a syrian hamster) and they contacted me to take him in at Tiny Whiskers Animal Rescue.

I’m keeping him for a few days before transporting him to his foster home. He is a very sweet male mouse that we think is between 6-8 months old.

The hamster, Orbit, has already found a home through Tiny Whiskers. The female mice, Sailor & Fiona, are on pregnancy watch and will be introduced soon. If you are in Minnesota and can meet near the Twin Cities or Faribault (we typically meet in Burnsville for adoptions but are flexible) and you are interested in a male mouse please email us at tinywhiskersanimalrescue@gmail.com to become preapproved for adoption once Pirate’s initial quarantine is up.

John C. Turner: Civil War Heavy Artillery Officer

John C. Turner, the grandfather of my own grandmother, was an enlisted member of Company K of the Minnesota First Regiment of Heavy Artillery during the American Civil War. His wartime story has been passed down through each generation of my family, and his personal transcribed 1865 diary includes detailed documentation of every aspect of his one-year life in the army. The Minnesota First Regiment was an important support network for Union-controlled forts over the course of the last two years of the war (1863-1865), centered especially within the Western Theater. In January of 1865, the regiment had begun its recruitment by printing handbills that read:

“Volunteers for Heavy Artillery, 150 Recruits Wanted for Co. K , 1st Reg. Minn. Heavy Art. The undersigned is now ready to muster in all volunteers offering for this popular arm of the Service. Transportation to Fort Snelling will be furnished to recruits as fast as mustered in. Now is the time to secure a place in this Reg. and avoid the draft. All drafted men will be assigned to the old organizations. This regiment is only for One year’s Service-Government pays $100 bounty. Volunteers can be credited to any town they choose, the men must be raised in the next twenty days, or the Draft will take them, Come on then and Volunteer (Monday, January 16th, 1865).”

Turner, born in 1834, was a small store owner in the town of Faribault, MN and he, like many of his fellow enlisted men, were in their late twenties during the Civil War: perfect candidates for the war’s draft. The appeal to receive $100 to volunteer and serve rather than be subject to compulsory recruitment without much incentive was an obvious choice. Company K had quickly reached its desired population of one hundred forty strong, farm-raised men, and began its trek from Fort Snelling, MN down to Chattanooga, Tennessee to take control over the existing forts and provide additional ammunition for heavy artillery (mostly cannons). Prior to the regiment’s arrival to the established forts, however, was an important victory for the Union. Only months earlier, in 1863, the Chattanooga Campaign took place during which Union Major General William Tecumseh Sherman launched a surprise attack to gain key high ground surrounding Chattanooga from Confederate General Braxton Bragg (Woodworth, 2012). This victory pushed Confederate forces south and ultimately allowed for Sherman’s notorious March to the Sea, an infamous implementation of psychological warfare in which 67,000 soldiers marched from Atlanta, GA and into the Carolinas, terrorizing civilians and living off the southern farmland (Cox, 1994). 

Company K’s arrival a year later proved to fortify Union defenses in the case of a potential northward Confederate invasion. Turner’s diary describes the hardships of being stationed in Chattanooga, with forced food rations and constant anxiety of having to see real warfare: “Captain went to making out requisitions, for arms ammunition and uniform jackets, and other things preparatory to marching order for we are anxious to get out of this place as soon as possible, as it is a very poor place for the men, I think if this is soldering I have a poor taste for it (Tuesday, March 7th, 1865).” The regiment provided a variety of services during its journey southward, ranging from ditch-digging and burying dead soldiers to capturing loose rebel army men. However, some of the most interesting aspects of Turner’s story are the recounts of his downtime in the evenings. In Chattanooga, groups of former slaves and current African American Union soldiers had performed for the regiment, providing “good violin music and good dancing” while enlisted men sat around campfires drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco through their pipes (Thursday, June 8th, 1865). This insight provides a unique perspective on war, one in which soldiers are thought of as more human than as killing machines, that soldiers, just like civilians, perform their day’s tasks and subsequently wind down in the evening with substances and entertainment to remove themselves with slight bliss. Because so many army men experience incredible trauma during war (even from solely seeing dead bodies on the battlefield), it is only rational to think that at the end of each day, an altered state of mind and body are reached in order to cope. Even further so, it is incredibly intriguing to see how the absorption of African Americans into the army was categorically accepted (by the Union) and even appreciated. Because of the nature of the Civil War (which was fought primarily over the question of slavery in the United States), it is only fitting for soldiers to not only fight for the cause, but at the same rate take the time to experience African Americans (Minnesota at the time most likely didn’t have a prominent African American population) as the United States’ culture begins to shift towards the end of the war. In fact, Minnesota was one of the very first states to recruit African Americans: “at the outbreak of war in 1861, Minnesota with a population of about 180,000 was the newest state in the union and the first to volunteer troops in its defense. The 24,000 Minnesota soldiers (including 100 free black men, scores of American Indians, and at least one woman) often found themselves on the frontlines or the last to leave the field in many battles and campaigns of the war, from the Dakota Territory, south along the Mississippi River, to the deep south and east all the way to Washington D.C. (Minnesota Board, 1890).” With an overwhelmingly motivated population, Minnesota served as a pivotal state in both the formation of the Union Army and through the course of the four-year war, as it recruited volunteers of all backgrounds and motives. Furthermore, Dred Scott, a former slave, was even held at Fort Snelling (where Turner was based), and the Supreme Court’s initial decision to not grant Scott freedom (though he resided in a free state) sparked controversy across the United States, and scholars even say that this decision might have contributed to the initialization of the Civil War (Alexander, 2007).

The family story of my great-great-grandfather is one that I would have never thought to have such an abundance of connections and contributions to my understanding of the Civil War as a whole. The efforts of non-combat enlisted men (like heavy artillery soldiers), in my experience, seem to go unnoticed when considering both the backgrounds and results of historical wars, even though these men and women constantly form the supportive basis for the front lines of the battlefield. Being able to research the different aspects of Turner’s story has allowed me to gain a more holistic perspective on the concept of war, moving away from solely studying war’s causes and effects to discovering the many psychological and “behind-the-scenes” features of soldier life. I, like my parents and grandparents, believe that it is important to keep the experiences of our elders alive, and will continue to pass down this story to future generations with the intention of discovering our incredibly fascinating family genealogy.

Outside of the Twin Cities' Jewish Community

The arrival of the first Jews in Minnesota may be traced back to the middle of the 19th century. Jewish pioneers, most of whom were of German and Eastern European heritage, established communities in places like Duluth, Rochester, and Winona in Minnesota.Synagogues, schools, and other cultural institutions were founded by the early settlers, who were responsible for the formation of close-knit communities that supported Jewish traditions and ideals.

Outside of the Twin Cities, Jews also established communities. The first permanent Jewish migrants arrived in Duluth in 1869, and it was there that the greatest population could be found. After another decade had gone, a sizable number of Jewish people finally joined them. Jews from Germany and Central Europe were the first to arrive, followed ten years later by Jews from Eastern European countries. The relatively low number of Jewish residents in Duluth served to forestall a schism among the community.

After the Mesabi Iron Range opened for business in the 1890s, the city of Duluth, Minnesota, as well as Superior, Wisconsin, experienced explosive growth as a commercial center. In 1885, Jews with roots in Lithuania laid the groundwork for what would become the Adas Israel Congregation. In 1891, Jews from Hungary and Germany came together to construct Temple Emmanuel, a Reform synagogue. The community of Eastern European immigrants settled in Duluth's West End, which is now known as the Central Hillside neighborhood. This area is located between Twelfth and Twenty-fourth Avenues.

Residents of Duluth who were Jewish were given opportunities to participate in the city's political and economic life. Twenty-three hundred people identified as Jewish called Duluth home by the time World War I came to a close. In the 1930s, when it was at its peak, there were approximately three thousand five hundred people. During this time period, Duluth was home to four synagogues, two cemeteries, a Talmud Torah, three social clubs, and four lodges, in addition to a number of philanthropic organizations and social clubs. The number of Jews living in Duluth has dropped to 2,633 by the year 1940.

During the 1890s, a number of Jews from the Duluth–Superior area relocated to the Iron Range, where they established retail and other enterprises that supplied the burgeoning mining towns in the area. Iron Range Jews were just 1,112 strong at their population's highest point in 1920, but they were able to keep a thriving Jewish community alive for decades. Eveleth, Hibbing, Virginia, and Chisholm were all places that saw the establishment of new synagogues.

At the start of the twentieth century, various towns in the southern part of Minnesota, such as Faribault, Mankato, Albert Lea, and Austin, saw the establishment of modest Jewish populations. Jews congregated for religious purposes in each of these locations. Only in Rochester, where the demand for a local congregation that could serve Jewish patients was created by the creation of the Mayo Clinic in 1905, was a synagogue (Bnai Israel) founded.

In the 1920s, the rate at which Jews were relocating to other parts of the state reached its highest point. At the conclusion of World War I, there were a total of around 4,000 soldiers counted in 145 smaller communities outside of Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Duluth.

The Jewish communities in Minnesota are spread out across the state in a variety of locations. Each community, from the lakeshores of Duluth to the grasslands of Rochester, has a distinct personality that is formed by the environment in which it is located.The Jewish population of Minnesota represents a diverse array of cultural and ethnic traditions, including Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Mizrahi Jews, amongst others. This variety contributes to the richness of the fabric that is Jewish life in the state.

Synagogues such as Temple Israel in Duluth, Adath Jeshurun Congregation in Rochester, and Shir Tikvah in the Twin Cities are essential components of Jewish community life since they offer both religious direction and social assistance.Jewish residents from all throughout the state of Minnesota are brought together via the efforts of community centers and organizations, which helps to promote a sense of belonging and solidarity.

There is a wide variety of Jewish educational institutions in Minnesota, ranging from Sunday schools to day schools. These schools ensure that the Jewish heritage will be passed down to subsequent generations.The participation of Jewish communities across the state in a wide variety of cultural pursuits, such as music, painting, and literature, contributes to the overall enhancement of Minnesota's cultural landscape.

Minnesota Governor Walz Announces $13 Million for Business Expansion Statewide. Funding from DEED's Job Creation Fund and the Minnesota Investment Fund will help create over 650 jobs. ST. PAUL, MN (STL.News) Business Expansion - Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently announced that the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) will provide over $13 million to help 15 businesses across Minnesota expand.  The funding from DEED's Job Creation Fund and Minnesota Investment Fund will leverage nearly $766 million in outside investment and create 652 jobs over five years. "Minnesota is proud to be a top state for business and to live and work," said Governor Walz.  "I am grateful to the workers, entrepreneurs, and businesses that call Minnesota home and contribute to our economy.  We are committed to supporting our businesses and investing in the future of Minnesota's workforce, whether through business expansion, grants for entrepreneurs, or child care." "The Job Creation Fund and Minnesota Investment Fund are important programs that not only help create jobs but stimulate economic investment around our state," said DEED Commissioner Matt Varilek. "These programs are just two examples of DEED's continued dedication to business expansion statewide." This comes as Governor Walz recently announced that Minnesota is a top-five state to live and work in.  Minnesota was also named a top-five state for business earlier this month. The Job Creation Fund provides financial incentives to new and expanding businesses that meet certain job creation and capital investment targets.  Eligible companies may receive up to $2 million for creating or retaining high-paying jobs, constructing or renovating facilities, or making other property improvements. The Minnesota Investment Fund provides financing to help add new workers and retain high-quality jobs, focusingon industrial, manufacturing, and technology-related industries to increase the local and state tax base and improve Minnesota's economic vitality.  Funds are awarded to local units of government that provide loans to assist expanding businesses. Details on individual projects are below: CFMOTO Powersport, Plymouth – MIF $340,000 CFMOTO Powersports, Inc., is an exclusive distributor of CFMOTO brand motorcycles, ATVs, and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in the United States.  Their proposed building construction project includes a new 90,000 square feet dual-purpose office and warehouse facility.  The building will serve as CFMOTO's U.S. corporate headquarters and incorporate new research and development machinery and the latest in warehouse technology.  With a projected total project cost of $25.8 million, the CFMOTO project is expected to create 44 new jobs with an average wage of $37.24 per hour. Daikin Applied Americas, Inc., Owatonna – JCF $175,000 Daikin Applied Americas, Inc. manufactures commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) equipment.  The proposed project will upgrade the interior office areas and make additional improvements to the existing factory in Owatonna, with an expected total project cost of $1.96 million.  The project is expected to create 20 jobs within the first year at an average wage of $28.49 per hour. Elemet Group Inc., Princeton – JCF $800,000, MIF $1,000,000 Elemet Group Inc. specializes in robotic welding, heavy metal spinning, powder coating & finishing, heavy machining, fabrication, and laser cutting.  The proposed project will build a new facility in Princeton to support their growing business and manufacturing needs, with an expected total project cost of $26.4 million.  The project is expected to create 45 jobs within the first three years at an average wage of $29.59 per hour. F2F Inc., Faribault – JCF $175,000 F2F Inc. is a new start-up that develops designs that will integrate mushroom cultivation into a single synergistic loop that comprises climate, automation, and efficiency improvements, with the goal oto raiseds and altering the waalteroms are cultivated.  The proposed project will expand the current facility in Faribault and supply machinery and equipment.  The total project cost is $7.2 million, and is expected to create 40 jobs within the first three years at an average wage of $25.40 per hour. Falls Fabricating LLC, Little Falls – JCF $175,000, MIF $190,000 Falls Fabricating LLC is a full-service precision fabricator of complex components with expertise in cabinets, chassis, tanks, reservoirs, frames, and brackets.  The proposed project will expand its current Little Falls facility by adding an additional 40,000 square feet and updating the current equipment being used.  The project is expected to cost $15 million and create 32 jobs with an average wage of $22.34 per hour. ForwardEdge ASIC LLC, St. Paul – JCF $500,000, MIF $800,000 ForwardEdge ASIC LLC is a microelectronics design business that makes application-specific integrated circuits.  The proposed project has leased 68,308 square feet of lab and office space in Saint Paul and will procure machinery and equipment, with a total project cost of $36 million.  The project is expected to create 113 jobs within three years at an average wage of $84.51 per hour. GEOTEK LLC, Stewartville – JCF $800,000, MIF $230,000 GEOTEK LLC develops and manufactures a variety of engineered composite products utilizing pultrusion and filament winding, including fiberglass cross-arms, light poles, and utility poles.  The proposed project will construct a new 105,000-square-foot facility that includes an office, lab, and manufacturing space with a total expected project cost of $13.5 million.  The project is expected to create 35 jobs within the first three years at an average wage of $21.02 per hour. Graco Minnesota Inc., Anoka – JCF $737,000, MIF $250,000 Graco Inc. supplies technology and expertise for the management of fluids and coatings in both industrial and commercial applications.  Its subsidiary Graco Minnesota Inc. designs manufactures, and markets systems and equipment to move, measure, control, dispense, and spray fluid and power materials.  The proposed project will expand the current facility in Anoka by adding an additional 170,000 square feet, with an expected total project cost of $42.7 million.  The project is expected to create 43 jobs within the first three years, with an average wage of $27.20 per hour. Massman Companies Inc., Alexandria – MIF $150,000 Massman Companies design and manufacture automated packaging machines.  Their services include designing, manufacturing, and installing systems for case packing, cartoning, robotics, palletizing, liquid filling, shrink packaging, and engineering integrated production line systems.  The proposed project will purchase 80 acres in Alexandria that includes a new 73,000-square-foot facility to be used for machine design, assembly, machine testing, engineering, and customer demonstrations.  The project is expected to cost $18 million and create 21 new jobs. Natural American Foods, Lakeville – JCF $155,000 Natural American Foods LLC – doing business as Sweet Harvest Foods – is a natural sweetener processing company.  The proposed project will lease a new 360,000 square feet facility consisting of office, product storage, and processing space, with an expected total project cost of $6.5 million.  The project is expected to create 20 jobs within the first two years at an average wage of $24.20 per hour. Niagara Bottling Company, Elko New Market – MIF $405,000 Niagara Bottling, LLC is a beverage manufacturer that produces bottled water, teas, sparkling waters, and additional products.  The proposed project will purchase land and construct a new 425,000 square feet beverage manufacturing facility in Elko New Market.  With an estimated total project cost of $129.4 million, the project is expected to create 58 jobs within the first three years at an estimated average hourly wage of $37.14. Polar Semiconductor LLC, Bloomington – JCF $800,000, MIF $4,000,000 Polar Semiconductor, LLC is a semiconductor manufacturer that develops and produces wafer products— advanced power semiconductor devices and sensors — at its Bloomington fabrication facility, which the proposed project would expand and modernize.  The project is expected to cost $372 million and create 73 jobs within the first two years at an average wage of $46.23 per hour. Renegade Truck Equipment, Richmond – MIF $400,000 Renegade Truck Equipment, Inc. specializes in the manufacturing of truck bodies, including gravel, contractor, flatbed, and utility/service, along with the sale of truck equipment, truck and trailer accessories, and snow equipment.  The proposed project will add an additional 20,000 square feet to the existing facility in Richmond, increasing manufacturing space and upgrading the facility.  The project is expected to cost $3.3 million and create 15 new jobs with an average wage of $36.92 per hour. Spectro Alloys Corporation, Rosemount – JCF $750,000, MIF $400,000 Spectro Alloys uses technology to turn what's used (material at the end of its lifecycle) into what's new (i.e., EVs and solar panels) by recycling aluminum.  The proposed project will expand the current facility in Rosemount by 90,000 square feet and will include new equipment to recycle used beverage containers, extrusions, and a variety of other regionally generated end-of-lifecycle scrap types into high-quality recycled raw materials for regional extruders and sheet rolling mills.  The project is expected to cost $76.8 million and create 70 jobs within the first three years at an average wage of $30.86 per hour. Sunrise Fiberglass LLC, Wyoming – JCF $175,000 Sunrise Fiberglass LLC, a National Composites company, builds parts for cranes, skid-steers, paving equipment, mining equipment, trains, underground infrastructure, and more.  With multiple molding capabilities and an advanced paint, bonding, and assembly department, Sunrise specializes in producing complex parts and large sub-assemblies for multiple industries.  The proposed project will add an additional 20,000 square feet of production space to the existing Wyoming facility, with an expected total project cost of $3.6 million.  The project is expected to create 23 jobs within the first two years, with an average wage of $21.96 per hour.
