Galvatron’s Revenge

I already wrote a review for this on Letterboxd (no idea they had fan films on that site) but I wanted to put my thoughts down here as well. Pretty much word for word what I said on Letterboxd with some tweaks.

So. Galvatron’s Revenge. A transformers fan film that has been in production for ten whole years.

I’m so disappointed in myself that I chose this to be the last film I watched in 2024. Nothing can describe my spite and hate towards this. 

Taking the controversy aside, the downright racist and homophobic VA for Optimus, and the director who defended him! This is still bad. It is not good in any conceivable way.

The animation still looks almost the same as the test animations from five, seven whatever years ago. The dialogue is blander than Woolworths brand biscuits. Characterisation? What characterisation? The film makes the bold decision to introduce ELEVEN new characters and give them virtually zero development or character. Only mere shreds are handed to the characters of Springer and Rodimus. 

Not even the pre existing characters get anything, beyond scraps for Knock Out. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that many characters are MIScharacterised.

Optimus is completely fine with his revival, even though that goes against the meaning behind his sacrifice and the monologue accompanying it at the end of Predacons Rising. Ultra Magnus is completely fine with getting a new hand, even though he learnt a valuable lesson losing it and gaining a claw like appendage in its place. Arcee is constantly being tossed around and treated as helpless. Not to mention the weirdly borderline misogynistic dialogue lines towards her by Onslaught and Rodimus which just really irked my soul. Megatron as soon as he comes back and sees the Combaticons is just fine with them being around and even joins up with them, going against his disbanding of the Decepticons. It’s just so bizarre. This fan film just returns everything to the status quo. 

The sound quality is painfully inconsistent. Some characters mics are strangely quiet, while others vary. There is even one or two points where characters suddenly go silent. This isn’t to mention that the voice work isn’t great. It’s especially noticeable for characters who are supposed to sound old and/or wisened (such as Ratchet) and instead have blatantly youthful sounding actors.

The dialogue as mentioned before doesn’t help. There isn’t any meaningful exchanges, no clever comebacks, no charismatic banter, nothing. Just “We need to stop X from doing/getting Y!”.

The story goes nowhere. There is barely A story to go anywhere. Unicrons “Anti Primes” (including the titular Galvatron) come back, there’s basically 30-45 minutes of fighting, they steal Unicrons spirit and then TITLE CARD. Again, no lesson is learnt, no revelation is revealed, no character experiences change. It’s a mess. 

I agree with a sentiment I read somewhere on YouTube. Hopefully the planned sequels never see the light of day. Not unless this director gets his act together, starts making some good decisions on who should be part of his productions and actually starts listening to some criticisms.

This 1969 Spider-Man short fan film by Donald F. Glut (later a professional screenwriter and author, including the novelization of The Empire Strikes Back) is considered the first live-action appearance of Marvel's wall-crawler.
