NANOWRIMO DEATH QUEST DAY 2
final word count: 13929
a bit less words today on account of a work meeting (wine tasting) and just. the agonies. my soul is now bleeding more. but it's cool.
an excerpt from today:
But we aren’t here to argue. I’m here to tell a story, and you’re here to listen. Like so many of our stories, this one, too, has tragic beginnings. War hasn’t changed much in the years since the Alabaster Imperium tried to conquer Falvia—but I suppose you wouldn’t recognize those names, or any of the history of that time. So much has been lost to us. And yet, tales like this remain. Here are some names you’ll recognize: Fleshwitch, Stormherd, Startailor. The monstrous witch, the bastard prince, the old enchanter. Just like I told you at the beginning. All three of them die in the end. But it begins here, like this. It starts with a woman who should have known better. It starts with a man who wanted what he couldn’t have and took what he wasn’t given. It starts with a boy who saw what the stars were made of.
oh hey there's like a narrative happening here or something. neat. hey on an unrelated note my arms are gonna fall off.

2023 Crusher in the Tushar Recap
The Crusher in the Tushar bike race is widely renowned as one of the most challenging gravel events due to the amount of climbing it takes to ascend the 10,000-plus foot mountain top finish. Taking place in Beaver, Utah, this annual race attracts top riders from around the globe. It is also stop number three of the Life Time Grand Prix series. Bikeflights Partnerships Director, Michael Potter, was on-site to connect with riders at the expo and then ride the course the next day.
Nearly 850 riders, and their friends and families, traveled to this small mountain town to endure the elements of the event’s grueling route across the Tushar Mountains. Long, steep gravel road climbs and intense exposure makes the ride especially challenging. Weather reports for the weekend were as good as they could be for Utah in July with ninety-degree days and full sun were made bearable by the lack of humidity.
The weekend festivities kicked off with a shakeout ride from the event’s title sponsor’s location, The Creamery. Over 100 riders showed and were treated to some fine Beaver gravel backroads.
Following the shakeout ride was the expo and packet pickup. Many of the event’s top sponsors were set up to show off their latest product, discuss nutrition, or in Michael’s case, share how someone could ship their bike with Bikeflights Bike Boxes and service.
The race course is not for the faint of heart. Starting in downtown Beaver riders make their way up a nearly 5,000 foot climb that starts within the first 10 miles of riding. Up and over the mountains riders descend into Junction and then circle back up the mountain for the finish at Utah’s newest ski resort Eagle Point.
The men’s and women’s races played out in a similar fashion and were won by the current Grand Prix series leaders, Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafane respectively. Both riders broke away from their competitors early and rode to the finish line solo, each setting course record times in the process. Pete Stetina and Matthew Beers would go on to round out the podium in the men’s race. In the women’s race Lauren De Crescenzo would finish second and Falvia Oliveira Parks placed third.
With many racers opting to skip this event, the Grand Prix Series shakes up in the deeper placings but the top three remain steady. The women’s category is led by Sofia Gomez Villafane, Sarah Sturm and Haley Smith. The men’s category is led by Keegan Swenson, Russell Finsterwald and Lachlan Morton.

END OF TRANSMISSION
===
“That was the final transmission,” said Dr. Falvia, readjusting in his chair. “We’ve gone over it hundreds of times over the years, we never could figure out what happened to Icarus.”
With a sigh, Dr. Falvia stood and faced the audience in the room, “The engineering data showed everything was nominal, there was no hint of a problem from the crew, hell… we weren't even able to find a debris field.”
A few murmured voices agreed with him, they’d all read the reports. Most of them were old enough to remember his predecessor, who gave up everything he had worked for to spend the rest of his life looking for anything that could solve the mystery of the Icarus. A few decades had gone by before the first reliable FTL ships were developed. His predecessor had been able to use one of these ships that the foundation owned to search even the far reaches of the galaxy and chase down any possible lead about the Icarus as fast as possible yet the same result also greeted him.
The Icarus was a modern-day ghost ship, drifting from reality to the realms of folklore, and that's how it would have stayed had it not appeared right next to the Orion Spaceport, 78 years after it had first gone missing.
“Now gentlemen,” began Dr. Falvia “I’m more than sure that you have questions but so do we. So far we have only examined the exterior and using the building plans have confirmed its identity. We are ho…”
“It was reported that the magnetic drive and engines were both still running when she appeared,” blurted out one of the men sitting on the opposite side of the conference table. “All the reports say that the longest she could have possibly run her engines was three years and that was with very careful planning. How could the engines still be running 75 years after they were supposedly supposed to stop?”
Dr. Falvia, after glaring at the man for interrupting him, continued on with his report. “As I had been saying, we are hoping to gain entry to the bridge later in the day. We cannot normally drill through the airlock because we have reports of a still breathable atmosphere inside. Once we get inside our main goal will be to secure the bridge so all the ships' logs can be downloaded. Depending on how well securing the bridge goes a decision will be made about entering the remainder of the ship.”
An hour later the briefing was over and all present were looking out one of the observation areas in the station overlooking the infamous ghost ship. Even though she was covered in streaks of hyperspace dust and had the telltale signs of solar scars, it was still clearly the Icarus.
One of the men; looking towards the bow, where the name Icarus was still visible through years of hyperspace dust, was the first to break the group's silence. “Icarus… Ironic isn’t it, almost as if they wanted it to fail”

✨The Henna Wars✨ . QOTD: What's the last book you were recommended or gifted and you loved? . The Henna Wars by @dibs_j is the fifteenth book I read for the #clearurshit readathon for the "gifted/recommended" prompt. . Nishat's parents didn't take her coming out very well. She wants to be out and not hide who she is but she doesn't want to harm her relationship with her family. In the midst of this, she falls for Falvia, a girl she knew in elementary school and is now back in her life. But a competition for business class makes all of that a bit more messy. . This book is able to tackle serious themes while still maintaining some softness and comedy. I really liked the relationship between Nishat and her sister; they fight and have disagreements but still manage to ultimately be there for each other. I also appreciate the way @dibs_j talks about microaggressions, racism, homophobia, and cultural appropriation and shows what that can look like. The Goodreads blurb pitches this as When Dimple Met Rishi x Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda but I also want to add that this reminded me, in some ways, of Felix Ever After. Highly recommend this book! . #clearurshitreadathon #thehennawars #yacontemporary #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookblogger #bookblog #bookishcommunity #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bibliophile #bookishlovegroup #bookishlove #readersofinstagram #reader #books #book #bookworm #bookish #booknerd #instabook #booksofinstagram #bookphotography #read #booklove #booksbooksbooks #instabooks #igreads #bookcommunity (at Wilmington, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIlbSeSgDHr/?igshid=y02oa8kjj10j

Scriggler Story of the Day RANDOM ACTS by Flavia Masson read the entire story and see more of Falvia's work here: http://ift.tt/2lrQQvr “…Le Petit Cambodge is packed. Maybe I’ll just order something to take home. As I browse the menu, my heart sinks into my stomach and an overwhelming sadness weighs me down, to the point that I begin to cry. What the hell is wrong with me? The restaurant is vibrating with life. Everyone is cheerful, enjoying this Friday night, except for me. I’m in my favorite city, doing what I love, and yet, I’m crying for no reason. I feel like a total fool. Before I erupt into more tears and embarrass myself, I abandon the menu and leave the restaurant. Maybe I just need to go for a walk and calm down; I have no idea where this inner turmoil is coming from and it’s only making me more upset. I walk around in circles, following swirling trains of thought. Maybe I’m just going nuts from spending too much time alone. I stop at the echo of distant blasting. Fireworks? A storm? Probably just kids playing with firecrackers. Whatever. I shrug and keep walking…” http://ift.tt/2kWNIdL
