My favorite musical changes every few weeks, but right now its epic the musical. A few days ago it was a mix of falsettos and something rotten, and a few weeks before that it was some like it hot (boy I LOVE this one)

also YEAH the way you described the vocals…. the early everything everything albums play a lot with like. roughness and scratchiness and the kind of ‘animalistic’ register of the human voice. (honestly everything before raw data feel. this is literally because the singer just decided to learn how to sing in high registers without falsetto for the first time which is like cool but also AUGH i miss that old sound

OK SO the thing about this bit

absolutely YES the thing about get to heaven is that it’s literally just like. a complete album of bangers. going down through their other stuff is gonna be a little more rocky, you might enjoy the like once-per-album weird slow ballads you might not, even though i’m lazy about listening to some of their weaker stuff when i do go through the entire albums i still find a lot of quirks in the instrumentation or lyrics that manage to impress me. i’d recommend delving into either man alive or arc next those are basically on par with gth although a bit more weird and morose? if you’re feeling it id then recommend raw data feel which oscillates more around pop/new wave but still has some really interesting musical constructions, gets extremely electronic and synthy…. a fever dream is like a 50/50 split between really long slow songs which are just Fine and really fast heavy bangers. just go listen to notln, can’t do, desire, good shot, run the numbers and ivory tower LOL. uhhhh reanimator is arguably their weakest album probably the most unremarkable but it’s also like my second favorite right after get to heaven. it’s weird and glowy and flimsier than their other tunes. that enchants me i guess…. they’ve also got an upcoming album that once again seems to be more pop oriented, cold reactor is the best of the singles they’ve released for it yet. what else. there’s like a youtube playlist out there of demo/outtakes/non album stuff that you can find real easy, there’s some really good stuff in there. personal favorites are the come alive diana demo, even the dogs and dna dump

ok so the fucking thing about the “lore” of this album. there technically isn’t any and most of ee’s albums are a per-song thing usually revolving around like. modern social commentary. the genius pages for most of their songs have like. direct songwriting annotations by the band and explain the thought process behind them. however for gth there’s also like a small layer of overarching lore about this one guy called thomas silhouette as a character. he’s not so much the crux of any narrative or presence as much as he’s just like. funny anagram arising from a lyric in fortune 500 that gets alluded to in later albums because he’s loosely representative of a lot of themes that get tackled in ee songs like capitalism and dread and shit like that

i have a lot of favorite musicals. some older, some much newer.

for the longest time my favorite musical was legally blonde. that still is one of my all time faves, i just wouldn't say it's my most favorite. as of right now, my favorite is a tie between beetlejuice or heathers. both are just fantastic scores, vocals, and styles.

some other musicals i love (in no particular order): 42nd street, annie get your gun, falsettos, sweeney todd, phantom of the opera, hairspray, grease, shrek the musical, next to normal, into the woods

there's probably so many others, but these are all the ones that came to mind.

also my favorite play is uncle vanya :)

my studies during college were a mix of theater and film, but with a concentration in theater. i did take musical theater classes, even tho that was a different degree altogether. i had wanted to do musical theater studies but the only reason i didn't was bc i would have have to take music theory and i know how my brain works and i just knew i wouldn't have made it lol

part of that was also bc a, the professor was apparently a hardass and b, i was not in a good headspace for half of college. so i stuck with theater instead of musical theater.

i took a wide variety of classes: dance, acting, theater design, and then multiple different level theater classes just focusing on different plays.

in college, i was apart of three different productions. carousel, sweeney todd, and the heidi chronicles. i was ensemble for two of them, and then i was an assistant to the director/stage manager/dramaturge (and technically understudy for anyone that was in show if they were to suddenly become ill) for one.

it was a lot of fun, and i miss it sometimes. especially since i haven't done any theater since graduating. but i also don't have time for it lol

Last song: Apparently it was ‘Two Time’ - Jack Stauber, according to Spotify? I’ve also been relistening to a few tracks from Falsettos all day, for some reason. ‘I’m Breaking Down’ got stuck in my head somehow. I’m not super big on musical theater, but I LOOOOVE Falsettos and especially Trina :) You can probably tell I have a certain type of favorite characters/media lol.

Last movie: I actually have no idea. Maybe Nimona with my IRLs a few months ago? I almost NEVER watch movies in full because I get bored of them easily. Sorry I know that’s so lame lololol

Currently reading: Nothing, unfortunately! I haven’t read any books/stories in an embarrassingly long time :( I am so ridiculously busy and haven’t had the time/motivation to read and get invested in new characters. I have a bunch of series I want to reread for nostalgia purposes, though. I’m also strangely tempted to read the Animorphs series? LOL. I looked it up on AO3 for the first time a few months ago while in the kids’ section of the library with my IRLS and we were assessing the popularity of kids’ books based on the amount of AO3/Wattpad fics (btw, there are a shockingly low amount of Geronimo Stilton fics in the world). I wasn’t expecting there to be an Animorphs fandom, but there IS? And the fics are really GOOD even though I don’t know the source material? Anyway. Tempted to read it because I like putting teens in situations /lh. Also I want to read more short stories! Send me recommendations, if you have any.

Last thing I googled: This is so embarrassing. ‘Bathroom cruising’ LMAOOOO. I was just writing a funny bit, but I wanted to make sure it was accurate, okay? T_T Other recent searches include my voice lesson Lieder, various areas I’ve felt pain recently (because I’m a hypochondriac /lh), and a vlog I had to watch for my job… I was writing an article about it.

Sweet/spicy/savory: Savory. Every time. I love savory foods, and they’re basically the only types of food I ever crave. Then I would go with spicy, but only if it’s spicy in a flavorful way (and not just a painful way). I don’t like sweet foods except for chocolate—and, even then, I am infamous among my friends and acquaintances for only liking SUPER dark chocolate… like 70% cocoa or more. I would say my favorite flavor profile is bitter! :)

Current obsession: I think y’all already know :^) I am incapable of having more than one strong interest at once, soooo DnDads has quite literally been occupying my brain since liiiike October 2022… almost a year ago now! o_o Holy shit. I’ve been really busy with work and school in the past month or so, so I haven’t done basically anything else in my free time. I’d like to start cross stitching again because I have some projects to finish, and I got some of my late grandmother’s jewelry-making supplies recently, so I’ll toy around with that, too.

Currently working on: Like, right this second? Discussion post replies for my Writing in Digital Environments course :p In general? As far as hobbies go, the beginnings of my next longfic chapter! As far as work goes, I’m working on article about a mural. I have to drive like 30 mins to get a features image for it tomorrow ugh. At least I get to kill time on the clock :’)

I recently went to the Re:Set DC concert (it’s really in Columbia Maryland but since no one outside of md has heard of that city niggas gotta put dc on the advertising). I planned to go by myself but some of my friends ended up being there. In the beginning waiting for doors to open I met these 2 girls in line. They was cool and they asked me to sit with them. But later went down to the floor and met my mans down there. But yo I was so sick I wasn’t on the floor for Fousheé set. I’ve been listening to her music so much recently and I ain’t know at first my ticket allowed me to be on the floor. KILL. But yea she was amazing. Brought hella energy and other than Steve she was the only performer that had niggas jumping. Toro was next. I have never listened to his music before. It was a nice vibe. James Blake was next. Dawg……….. DAWG. That nigga was amazing. He definitely gained a new fan after that performance. Loved the electronic music in the beginning. The stage set up with all the lights made everything better. And bro. That niggas voice. Like bruh he was going crazy. His breath control was unreal. His falsetto was so immaculate. Nigga was really flexing lmfao. Then bro sang Godspeed by Frank Ocean. A moment I will never forget. Mesmerizing. It was so beautiful. But can you believe that these dumb high school white girls next to me were talking during him singing that song. Everyone around us were either quiet or singing the lyrics. Shit actually pissed me off. Like look around and get with the memo. Like this is the closet probably everyone here has gotten to a Frank Ocean performance and you wanna talk? Go to hell. Also I kept praying to God that I didn’t have to piss during the end of the set and the break in between to Steve set cause I didn’t wanna lose my spot on the floor lmfao. Steve came out and yo it was so lit. Was singing every song that was played. Wasn’t thinking bout anything but the music at the moment. Also I was recording in the beginning and a girl in front of me accidentally hit it out my hand. Swear I thought I’d never see that phone again. But thank god it hit a women on her shoulder and she picked it up and gave it to me. It was so nice to see all these songs I’ve been playing for months be played live. Was so fucking cool. There was a nigga next to me that started crying and seeing that was moving. Songs can really mean so much to people. When Lay me down came on I was on cloud 9. My favorite song by Steve. The imagery on screen for that song looked so cool. And when Fousheé came out for Sunshine it was so lit. At least I was on the floor for one song she was singing lol. That song is so amazing. Later he played Bad Habit and that mf was rocking. Everyone was screaming out them lyrics. Damn it was so cool. That concert was definitely the best concert I’ve ever been to. It was so nice from the first song to the last. Will definitely always remember it.

Hey storm, hope you and your family are doing well. I’ve really been enjoying your blog posts lately esp the ATLA post. Who was your favourite side character in ATLA? Mine was Mei, I had such a big crush on her, that I remember being upset when we found out that she was with Zuko (please note, I did not know this was a crush at the time because… ✨heteronormativity✨… so pre teen me was confused). Also, the secondary reason why I am here is because I’ve got some potential army recruits at work. My work environment is pretty relaxed, so we often take turns playing background music from our own playlists. I’ve got the entire office hooked on butter and boy with luv so I’m pretty proud of myself overall lol. Presently, i’ve got two of my co workers properly hooked, and have been reeling them in slowly but surely (not in a cult like way, or MLM way, she says convincingly). My next plan of action is to establish the ‘oh sh*t’ connection, since we’ve got the basics out of the way. I know for me, the moment I watched Jimin’s live performance of serendipity, I wasn’t able to look away. Like I seriously repeated that same video over and over, and when I then explored the other members, I realised that I was gonna be in this bts thing for life, hence the ‘oh sh*t’ (I’m british so I should clarify this phrase has a positive connotation, equivalent to holy hell or woahhh). My question to you, is what 1 or 2 performances, would you recommend I show them for each individual member? Feel free to include fancams or individual/unit performance if you would like. Talk about a badass 😍 I won't lie, idk about favorite side character but I had the biggest childhood crush on Azula and on Zuko. Which that also should have told me something that I didn't even register early on. Pretty sure they were my first fictional crushes though. And the fact that they were both villains. Yeah, idk what that says about me. Maybe I don't wanna know. The fact that fictional villains are still who get me too 😅

I recommend things based on the person and what I think they would like, or what their music tastes are outside of BTS. So you've gotta be flexible! Lol

For Joon, again depending on their style of music, but I would probably recommend Persona as a solo and Not Today as a group song he shines in. Or if it wouldn't scare them away as too many in one go, I'd want them to listen to Mono as an album. Because WOW.

For Jin, the solo I would go to is Moon, especially if they like BWL lol I love his voice on that track so much. And as group song I think he shines in Crystal Snow. Because WOW. And I would also want to try and sneak in Come Back Home because his falsetto at the start is insane. But Epiphany is a great song to hook people too

Suga, ahh this will be hard to narrow down. Lol For his solo, I'm going to go with Intro: Nevermind. (Lyrics) It's honestly one of my favorite BTS songs too. And Seesaw is a good one live too. For a group song he shines in is Ma City and 134340.

Hobi, I'd probably go with Just Dance as my solo rec for him. It's just sooooo Hobi. Lol and his live performance slays. As for a group song he shines in, easily Mic Drop

For Tae, his solo i would absolutely go for Singulairity, it's what I sent my friend as soon as she asked who V was. Lol as for group song he shines in, I think I'd say Idol performances, his voice in that song kills me!

For JK, I would recommend Euphoria as his hook in song as a solo. Followed by My Time and Rainism cover for a killer performance. For a group song he stands out in. Like all of them, but Pied Piper and On would be my top picks.

okay so first off. my personal favorites (in no particular order): Mamma Mia (jukebox musical more grounded in reality but it's got the glitz and glam and strong female relationships that you probably dig from wicked), Rent (angry and emotional rock-opera about starving artists during an epidemic) American Psycho (based on the book/movie. violent but it was literally one of the best professional performances I've ever seen. lots of fun 80s synth in the music), Next To Normal (about mental health struggles and the effect they have on a family), In The Heights (4th of July weekend for a family as they go through A Lot, LMM wrote it and it, the music is gorgeous and it has more of a plot than hamilton so I tend to like it more lol), Hair (hippies during the vietnam war, essentially changed the face of musicals, fun and funky 60s rock music), Billy Elliot (based on a movie, INSANE dancing, takes place during the miner strike in England in the 80s, mixes classical ballet music with angry protest and some 80s vibes and it's SO GOOD lol), Hedwig and the Angry Inch (concert-set musical about a failing 80s glam rock singer essentially having a breakdown on stage for an hour until they realize they've been emotionally abusing their transgender wife who is the backup vocalist and let's her take over the final performance) Spring Awakening (a play about coming of age and the importance of sex education written in 1891, which was then banned over a hundred times until like 2007 when someone decided to tweak it a little and add some rock music lmfao), The Lightning Thief! (the first percy jackson book lmao it's cheesy but it's SO good!!!), Kinky Boots (guy inherits a failing shoe making factory and decides to market specifically to drag performers, a lot of belting and high energy songs, overall a fun and positive show), Six (the six wives of henry the 8th have risen from the dead to put on a pop concert), Beetlejuice (based on the movie/cartoon and it's so Fun omg)

shows that are kinda Big Popular with theater people that you'd probably like bc frankly most people do lmfao: Dear Evan Hansen, Be More Chill, Heathers, Chicago, Les Miserable, Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera, Book of Mormon, West Side Story, Cabaret, Hadestown, Waitress, Falsettos, Legally Blonde, The Last Five Years

shows I think are severely underrated: Jekyll and Hyde (based on the story but LISTEN the ballad 'In His Eyes' haunts my every waking move), 13 (extremely cheesy story about a boy moving right before his 13th birthday, every high school Ever has put it on so people tend to find it cringy but I'm here to say it's genuinely funny), Drowsy Chaperone (an old man recounts the plot of his favorite show and it's just literally insane and chaotic it's SO funny), Something Rotten (a play write who sees himself as William Shakespeare's biggest rival sets out to outdo the bard by creating the world's first musical. SO funny and creative and I truly think shakespeare would have wanted this show lmao), Dogfight (a soldier tricks a girl he thinks is ugly to coming to a party with him but then he realizes he sucks and falls in love with her, was NOT expecting to like it as much as a I did but it's sweet???), 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (interactive comedy that gets so chaotic)

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon omg i have SO many personal headcanons for major you don't even know. first off one of my fav hcs is that goro listens to white noise when he sleeps at night bc he cant fall asleep without it. i also think junior can sing an impeccable falsetto and he has the most trashy teenage white girl music taste ever its so cringe but he doesnt care. and you can catch these hands with the headcanon that momoko does dance and she would actually be really good at baseball if she ever played!!! lastly i have a whole fucking list of headcanons about gibson bc hes so important to me but some of the highlights are: 1) hes objectively a terrible driver but ironically loves driving fancy cars and wrecks one every 6 months 2) hes actually a pretty decent cook bc he had to teach himself how to cook after laura died and 3) he was drunk for his own wedding ill die on that hill

X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms OOOOOOOH this is a tough one i have so many!!! but i think my top 3 have to be braime (got), wrightworth (pwaa), and mary/matthew (downton abbey) bc im obsessed

relistened to the album a few times and i actually love skinz - it’s probably my favorite track, but that’s because i’ve been on an industrial/noise kick for the past year - and thematically ip2 does feel like ip1′s evil twin (skinz>libido, suit dance>instinct, gaslighting>byredo, ult bliss>tog, it even has the same progression lol)

some thoughts (music, performance, mv, lore), maybe too many thoughts

ip2 is a really good album but absolutely feels like it’s gone through a massive transformation from whatever the initial concept was - i feel like i can hear a few points where the lines have been redistributed, it might just be confirmation bias and presumably a lot of this stuff has been rearranged/restructured/rewritten to better fit a group without... their... lead... vocalist...... brb have to go smash my head through a cinderblock

ANYWAY

thoughts on the music: oh they’ve done it again my god. skinz/gaslighting genuinely addictive, put ult bliss in the MOMA, suit dance just genuinely nice and fun. all their performances are incredible and their repertoire of vocal techniques has expanded unbelievably in the past year. extremely extremely impressed with kyubin in particular, especially because they autotuned the shit out of that man in asoiaf and now they’ve figured out how to use more of his natural vocal color/his technique has improved so much! love hearing mill get more lines, killing the rap verses even though they should have perhaps rewritten the gaslighting verse to not contain the word “teetering” just my opinion. they’re really playing with texture and dynamics as well - whispering, growling, belting, falsetto, WHOEVER WAS SINGING AT 2:09 IN SKINZ I WILL --dialup noises-- like i almost ascended.

i still think ip1 is the stronger album in terms of unity of concept - suit dance my beloved i am still not entirely sure where you fit in this album of toxic possessive sm anthems but you’re doing great mwah

thoughts on the stage performances: genuinely if not for the skinship bits, it’s just a solid sexy bg performance. it’s kind of down there with sage in terms of coherency - there are a lot of disparate parts interspersed with cool points. i think the “death drive” concept behind ip2 (restoring earlier states of being with the end goal being nonexistence) explains the repetition of a lot of previous choreo (i counted designer, dora maar, asoiaf, savanna, libido, maaaybe angel? and love’s characteristic power gesture that he likes to do while belting ok cry break). i think if the original lore was intact all of this would make so much more sense as a death drive concept (starts with libido, ends with savanna) and tie into the time travel narrative from dpj/lsg.

based on that, if you held a gun to my head and made me guess, i would say the skinz choreo has been in the works at least since the end of libido promos and they didn’t have the budget to create something out of whole cloth after aug 2, so we’re seeing them change up the formations slightly to disguise the fact that there’s an even number of members. the first stage had some holes in formations that probably only showed up because of comeback nerves. kpop performances lend themselves better to odd numbers of performers --gritting my teeth-- but astro and oneus make 6 work, and i think shinhwa was a 6 member group, so it’s not impossible, just not the most convenient number to work with. but i think this was pretty clearly originally designed for 7.

also oh my god i had forgotten how much i LOOOOOVE popping and locking bless them for giving mill that little spotlight.

thoughts on the skinz mv/lore: booooo it was funded by thoughts and prayers. would not be surprised if they blew their actual funds on an mv shoot with all 7 members in july and then had to reshoot this in nov/dec after delaying their fall comeback long enough to revise the whole album and oh i will stop there before going full doomer about 8d’s financial ruination.

the mv itself is pretty but feels like a really weak refrain to libido, where you have these intimate shots and innuendos representing the ego/conscious in color (junji-rie lollipop scene is highly underrated as one of the most shockingly sexual parts of the libido mv btw and i haven’t seen anyone talk about this) and then sink the viewer into the black and white realm of the id and subconscious desire. it does a really good job of highlighting the point choreography too.

if libido is about the entanglement of repressed sexual desire and divinity and creation, then we would expect the title track of ip2 to be destrudo or mortido and for the album to talk about monstrous/consuming sexuality and gross mortality and destruction. and the MUSIC!!!! DOES THAT!!

but the mv is sort of a flat sketch of the music - skinz is about the death drive (destrudo/mortido) as repetition and restaging of scenes from earlier in life, the eruption of the past into the present, the desire for destruction at the hand of a romantic/sexual partner - and the mv is about, um, a fan’s desire to be accepted and possessed by their idols in the most G-rated way possible, i guess? there’s not really a way to y/n your way into a choreography without a backup dancer which they absolutely cannot afford right now, so i’m seriously wondering what the id (b/w) portions are supposed to be representing. a fan’s sexual appetite for their idols underlying benign fantasies? if we were going to go this route i think we should have also gotten voyeuristic handicam aspect ratio from inside the choreography, as if someone was inserting themselves into both the id and ego of the video and “possessing”/restaging the full experience of the libido mv.

also it’s cool that they literally “restaged” the mv on the black platform! not entirely sure what the glitch/artifacting effects are meant to indicate - maybe artificiality and simulation - but they do remind me of this brian eno quote:

speaking of aspect ratio why were the color/ego shots pillarboxed so inconsistently? are we actually communicating different things when the color shots are letterboxed vs pillarboxed? because the taped footage from the practice studio in the beginning has the same aspect ratio as the shots that are supposed to be a fan’s y/n fantasy, but seems to communicate that someone is observing? am i looking too hard into an mv that clearly has a budget of whatever mom had in her wallet at the moment? the answer is probably yes but i just want to believe in competence so bad.

i wonder if the original mv concept was more grimy? i know a lot of people were theorizing that someone would die, and i was ready for a kind of dc deja vu/oneus tbontb thing where people are killing each other offscreen, but from the skinz mv teaser i was expecting “smack my bitch up” by the prodigy, and it has echoes of that - initial scene with the car as the hit and run, the ktv room as the bar, the beach as the strip club - without the misogyny (thankfully), recreational drugs (would probably get them banned in korea), or violence (boo). again, might be confirmation bias, especially since the first person shooting style was probably chosen for budgetary reasons, but i would have loved to see that sort of destructive/self-destructive all-night bender rampage, especially because the “smack my bitch up” mv was incredibly controversial and highly censored and i know jaden jeong is probably into that kind of thing.

anyway i will update this if the suit dance mv has anything to say but i have no idea at this point so i will conclude my thoughts after saying that i hope they haven’t actually ditched the lore. doesn’t seem like it at least music-wise but holy smokes this mv was dire. maybe i’m missing something! who knows! someone else figure out the aspect ratio thing please and perhaps this will all make sense.

In which I review and rank the songs from Glitch Mode based on my first few listens of each. My opinions are subject to change given the fact that some songs take more then 3-5 listens to grow on you.

1. Teddy Bear: 9.5/10

This song accelerated my heart rate just from the intro bro

I didn't expect a song with this title to be a body rolling R&B song, I was expecting a ballad lol

Feels dreamy asf

Heavenly

Mark singing 😩

Straight to the favorites ☝🏽️

I'm feeling the vibe

The falsetto moments after the bridge, I'm fucking floating

The music video was visually pleasing though, but that's irrelevant rn

Haechan's high note was too short, give me more

I feel like this needs more Jisung, but idk that might just be a me thing

It's catchy though, so like all of the questionable NCT titles before it (Hot Sauce, Sticker) it'll probably grow on me

Currently I am trying to force myself into liking it, Stockholm syndrome vibes

It's getting a little dance out of me on the 4th listen so I guess it's a grower 👍🏽

The "mmm, mmm" really sticks in your head

I don't know how I feel about the beat, It's choppy for sure

I love when raps are happening over soft and sweet instrumental, it's a nice contrast

Besides that, the whole song just kinda ran together for me

It's kinda boring but that's okay ig

The harmony in the bridge is so lovely

10. Drive: 4.5/10

Feels simple and minimalistic

Carefree and fun

The little car lock sound is so cuteeeee

I don't really have any strong feelings on this song, I don't hate it, but I don't absolutely love it though

This song is also pretty boring for me

11. Fire Alarm 2/10

Very noisy

Honestly such a jump scare

The siren is reminding me of the whistle in Sticker, oh no

Not "hop out the coop" 💀💀💀

The siren is ruining it, I actually hate it more than the sticker

It's giving headache

The beginning of the second verse was a nice break from all this chaos

Overall Notes: This album has taught me that a good bridge can really save a song and also, Dream has really good bridges. It was a bit of a mess, definitely has some skips in my opinion but there were good times too. I don't think that any of these songs will be big favorites for me in comparison to Dream's other songs but it could definitely be worse.

Extras:

-Can you tell that Jisung is my bias? Lol

-The Glitch Mode MV is nice, but I wish that there was some more even center time for the dance parts in it (I'm aware that the center time will be more even when they perform Glitch Mode live) but to anyone that doesn't stan Dream, it might give them the impression that Mark, Jeno, and Jaemin are the only members that dance well, which simply isn't true

-I tried to rank all of these in a critical manner but if we're talking strictly opinion and nothing technical, Better Than Gold and Rewind are my favorites
