I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed that trend with toh/dungeon meshi, because it had been bothering. And while everything you said runs true, I feel another aspect of it is the want to compare lumity to farcille. Amity-Marcille is not a bad comparison, even if it's not perfect, but Luz and Falin don't really have much in common beyond some traits you can really strech.

And I feel this highlights another aspect of the white favoritism, and is that most people only like Luz as part of Lumity. She fits as Laios far better than Hunter does, not as Falin, but the farcille vibes for lumity are far more important, because Luz character on her own is not what people is interested in, and is really bothersome. Because again, Amity is white, and she doesn't have this problem.

In general fandom will always default to reducing Luz to just the silly queer girl to talk about her white counterparts’ depth. They’ll talk about Hunter’s cult trauma or Amity overcoming her abuse, meanwhile Luz has an entire arc about surviving a suicidal depression and not letting a racist gaslight her into thinking she’s a selfish monster.

And then they’ll just reduce her to OTTER LUZ because it’s funny to juxtapose what a silly idiot Luz is compared to their serious and deep white faves, it’s just Oblivious Luz again. On its own these things (minus Oblivious Luz) were fine, except Luz isn’t held up as a multifaceted character with range the way her white counterparts are, she’s mostly appreciated as their supportive accessory and not someone whose struggle has so much more narrative focus because it IS the narrative.

There will sometimes be this performative culture around praising Luz as a Girlboss, a girl of color, but in the end it’s just that; Performative. People don’t treat Luz with the same consistent depth, they don’t treat her trauma the same as others’ despite her being the actual main character; She’s canonically suicidal! Fandom will give Luz her time in the spotlight when this week’s episode does, but after a while default back to Hunter when canon isn’t constantly reminding them who’s the real star of the show.

It’s simple really; Fandom loves to praise how their media has a diverse cast but then not engage with said diverse cast the way they do their white (boy) faves; They just treat characters of color as a shiny medal to prove they’re Progressive, but canon is not fandom. And fandom never listens to PoC despite saying they will this time, no you’re just an anti who hates fun or I can learn to consume it ‘critically’ except you don’t. Fandom has this gaslighting effect, regardless of intent, that the white guys are the only truly interesting characters and everyone else just isn’t as good no matter how much they do.

100% agree (also I support the hell out of transfem Falin enjoyers). Like it’s not something I think he’d realize on his own but he makes these absurd comments that people in his life are like, hey laios???? Do you wanna examine that buddy???? And he’s just drawing his motley of Monster OCs and painting mini-figures.

I like to imagine that Toshiro transitions first and Laios asks a ton of questions — like, how did you pick your new name? How did you know? Etc etc, things that could just Laios-brand curiousity, but because all of those other interactions, she just isn’t sure. Months go by, she eventually writes it off, and then Laios stuns everyone by asking Marcille to do his make-up ‘just to see how it feels’ and Toshiro is realizing, wait. Wait wait wait. Hold on.

Golems, Dragons, and Giant Mushrooms are all top-tier choices. Unicorns and Mermaids are also pretty good . Dryads seem questionable. Other than their pollen death-attack, they're pretty fragile, and the males can't even do that. I'd throw in some shapeshifters to sow maximum confusion.

There’s a reason why I’m so attached to laios and that’s because he acts so much like me, and is treated so much like me. Though, there is a clear difference between me and laios and that is he actually has a good friend group who don’t talk shit about him being him.

Growing up and to this day, I still am judged for liking stuff like dungeon meshi, i was smart when I was young, able to do math beyond my grade level but one day. I just couldn’t do that anymore now I barely can even do multiplication and no matter how much I try to learn it and put it in ways that’s easier, I can’t figure it out. And it didn’t help that people would always bully me for uncontrollably talking louder than normal, not being able to do certain things, being a cry baby. I always could feel their stares and to this day I still do. I still get bullied for being the odd one out, even in my own community and fandoms

It could be signalis, coffee talk, the only reason why I haven’t been picked on in the dungeon meshi fandom is because I haven’t posted anything to bully about. Other than my silly sibling ocs I made for laios and Falin,

and I specifically relate to Ariane from signalis so much is because she acts, is treated and has a very familiar family dynamic. The amount of times I’ve wanted to just leave to space and never return, all my life I’ve never had a proper support system. And really I dislike when the idea of Ariane being selfish to Elster as making her go through loop and loop and loop just to complete a promise, and people who haven’t been so rock bottom before will not grasp the idea of absolutely clinging to another person for their entire mental health.

I do know that’s unhealthy, as I have experienced and still currently experiencing that. Im gonna be honest, I still deeply miss my ‘Elster’, i regret leaving them but I needed to try and put myself first instead of clinging onto them for my mental health.
