The Impact of Fake Websites & Counterfeit Products on Ecommerce Marketplaces
Fake websites are designed to deceive users into believing they are legitimate online stores or service providers. Often mimicking the look, feel and branding of well-known companies, these websites lure unsuspecting visitors into providing personal information, making purchases or sharing financial details.
The rise of e-commerce has made it easier for cybercriminals to create convincing fake websites leading to potential identity theft, credit fraud and data breaches. Many users fall victim to these scams due to the professional appearance of the sites complete with similar logos, domains, and content as the original brands.
How to spot a fake website
The website looks the same but has the wrong / similar domain name.
They provide unbelievable offers or discounts to the users like ‘up to 95% discount’, etc.
The website doesn’t work as expected, like some of the buttons don’t work, etc.
Download Android / IOS Apps from trusted sources only. Avoid shopping through suspicious links

These are good tips, but I just want to point out that disguising a URL as another one, fake attachments, and automatic downloads were all already risks. The difference is now, instead of doing fakewebsite(dot)com/family-photos.zip, you can skip the first portion. Hell, you could already have made a hyperlink that says family-photos(dot)zip but make it lead somewhere else.
TLDs do not affect your offline file explorer or Finder. Going to photos/filename.zip will not take you to a website with that URL unless you type it into your browser without the photos part.
So in short, things you should already be doing and should continue doing, more now:
1. Be very careful about clicking links on the Internet. Check the actual hyperlink by hovering over or using right click "copy link" and pasting it in a text program
2. Don't download files unless you know they're from a legitimate source and disable auto downloads. Set to "ask every time"
3. Don't ever your credentials into a website without verifying the domain
Stay safe!
New Things to Beware on the Internet
On May 3rd, Google released 8 new top-level domains (TLDs) -- these are new values like .com, .org, .biz, domain names. These new TLDs were made available for public registration via any domain registrar on May 10th.
Usually, this should be a cool info, move on with your life and largely ignore it moment.
Except a couple of these new domain names are common file type extensions: ".zip" and ".mov".
This means typing out a file name could resolve into a link that takes you to one of these new URLs, whether it's in an email, on your tumblr blog post, a tweet, or in file explorer on your desktop.
What was previously plain text could now resolve as link and go to a malicious website where people are expecting to go to a file and therefore download malware without realizing it.
Folk monitoring these new domain registrations are already seeing some clearly malicious actors registering and setting this up. Some are squatting the domain names trying to point out what a bad idea this was. Some already trying to steal your login in credentials and personal info.
This is what we're seeing only 12 days into the domains being available. Only 5 days being publicly available.
What can you do? For now, be very careful where you type in .zip or .mov, watch what website URLs you're on, don't enable automatic downloads, be very careful when visiting any site on these new domains, and do not type in file names without spaces or other interrupters.
I'm seeing security officers for companies talking about wholesale blocking .zip and .mov domains from within the company's internet, and that's probably wise.
Be cautious out there.

This is a ‘fake government website’ providing Rs. 50,000 financial aid
Claim: A website called “rsby.org” which stands for a fake scheme called 'Rashtriya Shikshit Berojgar Yojana'. The site claims to be a government website and mentions that the Centre will be providing a financial aid of Rs. 50,000 to ration card holders under this new. The website claims to be a pilot project which is started by the Indian government along with the World Bank to help the country to manage the financial crisis occurring due to coronavirus pandemic. It says the scheme is only for the first 40,000 applicants and the money will be transferred online. The website also sought personal details for registration and a fee of Rs. 250 as 'account verification charge'. The central government, however, has not launched any such scheme. The website is not active now but the archived version of the website can be seen here.
FACEBOOK
People on social media started sharing about the website with false claims.
TRUTH
The Indian government has not launched this website. The claim of providing financial aid to ration card holders is also false. No such scheme has been launched by the government. On 26th March 2020, a relief package worth Rs. 1.7 crore was announced by The Centre to help the poor affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. With this information, a fake website was generated with false claims. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has also clarified about the same and asked people to be cautious of such falsified websites that ask for one's personal information and money. The tweet has been archived here. The website was carefully designed with emblems and logo including RTI. According to Domain Tools, this website was created on December 18, 2019 and was registered with "GoDaddy.com".
However, the government has another website called "rsby.gov.in", but this is an official website for providing health insurance to the poor and the scheme is called 'Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna' which isn’t the same as this fake website called 'rsby.org'. Read the full article

#techtuesday another day, another phishing email. Thunderbird was nice enough to figure it out. However, if it hadn’t, the misspelling of the word “thaat” was a clue. . . Being daring, let’s see what they do. Well first thing they want is to verify my “Appel” account. You’d think they would spell check this better. Other than this, they really did a good job duplicating Apple’s site. Beside my Appel account, they also tried to get credit card info. Finally, they redirect to Apple’s actual web site to make it seem everything is okay. . . One nice thing, is while I was putting in fake information, Google Chrome flagged the site as dangerous. But I had already made through a could of screens by then. . . So be careful out there. Some phishing attempts are better then others! . . #security #email #phishing #scammers #identitytheft #forgery #fakewebsites https://www.instagram.com/p/BuFmJb4n1xs/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2n80cqjogxk5
