The Witch and the Widow - Chapter 6 - Ostrea Edulis
Imogen admittedly doesn’t have much experience steering a horse from the driver’s box of a carriage.
She had done her best to get some practice in, of course; following the reasonable road to and from Fairfield Farm a handful of times, testing which of the horses wore the harnesses, pulled the weight of the carriage, and paired up together with the most ease.
But it is not second nature for her (more like a third), and she does not sit on the wooden bench comfortably; a gnawing anxiety stirring in her stomach as if she were on a boat and at the whims of the sea.
She had only been on a boat once, and it was for quite the journey.
vicious waters
terribly treacherous, with their habits of reciting rumours to estuaries and rivers that feed into the communities.
If she blinks too slowly she is presented pictures on the backs of her eyelids;
broken wheels, head-on collisions, carriage-carved tracks leading paths to final destinations off of the lip of a cliff.
(Not images of the future gifted by her powers - at least she hopes. These such images are only the boons of an anxious mind.)
A number of times she considers climbing over the wooden enclosure shelving her feet and onto the rear of one of the horses; straddling their unsaddled ribcage between her legs and putting more faith in the feedback of a certain halt instructed from direct contact rather than the separation of who knows how many manufacturers’ hands and the mechanical pull of a lever below her seat to a spring to a break to a wheel.
Certain as her pull on Ceviche’s reins when he attempted to buck the Lady - Ms Laudna - off of himself in fright, as a mummified corpse of a horse surfaced from the lake, disrupting its mirroring of the sky.
How much of Ms Laudna’s attention does she divide between the view from the window and what Imogen assumes of a book in her lap? Does she wish to know the route with an accustomed year-round seasonal familiarity as she does the belt around the lake? Or does she wish to hurry the passing of each signpost? Ask Sorcha to read her home-library-loaned paragraphs, praising the girl’s ability in spite of the jostling of narrow wooden wheels-
“I can read the labelling on the grain bags an’ all, I’m a real asset.”
“Absolutely -I must show you the library sometime, though you certainly are an outdoor being, even if a grass-grazer at that.”
praise-
(she hadn’t left what a thorough job Imogen had done of cleaning and buffing the carriage of its years of collecting cobwebs and dust and bringing it back to its ‘former glory’ unremarked.)
-would she identify the family of trees that gave the wheels their timber? Tip her bonnet to them as they pass in communal cluster, communing through touching roots, bordering one stretch of rolling hills as it sprawls into another?
Would Angharad have gotten sick from the motions of her own carriage ride? Imogen can’t imagine that she would feel too timid to entertain herself as a distraction with the presence of whoever it was escorting her.
Perhaps the plan was for that carriage to be the one that veered off track.
Maybe it will be a coincidence;  a convenience that the Lady leaves her estate for the first time at the very least since Imogen had been under her employ, a coincidence that they would pass an opening ploughed through the hedgerow decorated with timber and axel,
Angharad without her apron on; the blood soaking her dress her own
body limp for the next moon’s deadweight to be lifted over the horse-
“Imogen!” Ms Laudna calls, fortunately not sounding as though alarming her to the approach of another oncoming carriage.
The road stretches out before them uninterrupted, not a hole in the hedgerow to be seen, so Imogen feels somewhat at ease with her decision to turn and look over her shoulder (not that she would have disobeyed her Lady’s call regardless).
“Yes, m’lady?”
Ms Laudna leans outside of the carriage window, holding her hat to the scalp of her tilted head as the wind whistles past her (not quite the bowing of her skull in acknowledgment to the trees Imogen had pictured).
She has never seen her hair so dishevelled-
She likes how it looks on her.
“I think we should stop for lunch!” Ms Laudna projects around a smile, unthreading errant hairs as they try to weave in between her exposed teeth.
Imogen almost forgets to reply.
They stop at the turn-in for a gate to a large and open field, Ms Laudna - with Sorcha’s assistance -laying out a patchwork blanket anchored in one corner by a ribboned square wicker picnic basket.
Imogen does her best to not address Ms Laudna by her name in front of Sorcha; despite the noticeable lack of meats in the spread of cheeses and home-grown fruits and preserved vegetables and freshly-sliced bread.
Their journey resumes; uninterrupted by carriage tracks veering off into the hedgerow.

After the 2017 Tubbs Fire — which burned about 36,807 acres and destroyed 5,636 structures — out-of-town developers purchased large quantities of real estate in Santa Rosa and the surrounding burn areas. “We’ve seen a big emphasis from builders in the greater Bay Area, and some of those are bigger production homebuilders,” said Doug Solwick, a real estate broker in Santa Rosa. “We’ve seen smaller builders that have people from as far away as L.A. and other states, from as far away as Utah.” Rebuilding after a fire can be prohibitively expensive and time-consuming — something that survivors of a fire might not be up for. “We started talking with [Santa Rosa] homeowners, and we realized that 40% of the people don’t actually rebuild — they just choose to sell,” said developer Greg Owen, whose Fairfield-based company Silvermark Luxury Homes purchased around 100 properties in Santa Rosa neighborhoods burned by the Tubbs Fire.
40% is lower than I thought, more than half of them came back

It sounds like satire: a beloved Texas state park has been sold to a Dallas real estate guy, who plans to develop it into a private gated community. How could this happen? The answer: an old lease agreement, some bad timing, and a series of bizarre fumbles by the state of Texas itself.
For The Texas Observer, I wrote about the last days of Fairfield Lake State Park.

An actor known for a character who hunts ghosts on the show "Supernatural" has a new house in the state of Connecticut — also famous in pop culture for alleged “haunted” happenings.
Jensen Ackles, his wife Danneel Ackles and their Stone Park Trust Agreement purchased the historic Gold Coast mansion at 1143 Sasco Hill Road in Southport in July for $9.375 million, according to mortgage and warranty deeds that are publicly available for viewing by the town of Fairfield. The property had previously been on the market for $14 million.
Jensen Ackles portrayed Dean Winchester on all 15 seasons of the drama series "Supernatural" and its 2022 spinoff, "The Winchesters." Dean Winchester alongside his brother Sam Winchester hunt a variety of malevolent entities on the show. Some of the villains have been inspired by Connecticut legends, such as season one's Woman in White, a ghost who appears in the center of roads to lure in victims. The fictional brothers also traveled to the Nutmeg State to face ghosts during season two and a shapeshifter in season 10.
Aside from his over 15-year-long role as Dean Winchester, Jensen Ackles recently appeared in "The Boys," a show about villainous super heroes. He portrays Soldier Boy, a World War II veteran and father of Homelander, the show's main antagonist.
The Ackles’ new property was once the centerpiece of one of the most expensive estates along Connecticut’s Gold Coast. Real estate company William Raveis told Hearst Connecticut Media in February that the estate was split into seven lots. The complete property last sold for nearly $50 million in 2001 and was listed at $62 million in 2013. This most recent sale was for the main house.
The Elizabethan Renaissance-style mansion sits on 3 acres of land and has more than 30 rooms across four stories and more than 19,000 square feet. It has nine bedrooms and 15 bathrooms. An elevator transports residents between levels from the basement — with a safe room, large recreation area, storage rooms and halls — to the third floor and its numerous bedrooms, gym, game room, study and more. The grand entrance on the first floor leads to a library, movie theater, wine-tasting room, grand ballroom and more.
New York architect Henry C. Pelton built the estate for Benjamin DeWitt Riegel and Leila Edmonston Riegel in 1923. DeWitt Reigel was a mill owner and businessman who split his time between Manhattan and Ware Shoals, South Carolina, according to preservationists at Historic New England.
The home stayed in the Riegel family for decades. In 1997, Katherine Riegel Emory, daughter of the original owners, deeded a conservation restriction to the Aspetuck Land Trust protecting nearly 2,000 feet of waterfront from development to serve "as one of the last remaining examples of the gracious and expansive open spaces on Long Island Sound that were traditionally a part of the large estates that formerly flourished in the area," according to the deed.
"The views of this open space have given pleasure, not only to generations of owners and their families, but also to generations of the public, who enjoy the sight of the scenic, undeveloped shoreline from two nearby public beaches, from the public road past Southport Beach, and from the waters of Long Island Sound,” Emory wrote in the deed. “In an area as rapidly and as intensively developing as the Connecticut shore, this remaining, highly-scenic open space is a unique treasure which provides pleasure and spiritual renewal to many, as well as sanctuary to birds and animals."

Daniel Tschopp Log House — Pleasant Township, Fairfield County, Ohio by Christopher Riley
Via Flickr:
One of few relatively unaltered early-19th-century log buildings remaining in Fairfield County, and a possible example of a locally rare Germanic three-room plan. The house’s builder, Daniel Tschopp, was a native of Switzerland who moved to Pleasant Township in 1815. Tschopp worked as a millwright, and he presumably donated land for the nearby Tschopp Cemetery and belonged to the adjacent St. Peter’s German Reformed Church. By 1860, just before his death, Tschopp had acquired $6,160 in real estate, and his personal property was valued at $1,653.

Candlewood Lake
Tumblr media
Nestled in the heart of western Connecticut, Candlewood Lake is the state's largest freshwater body and a beloved destination for nature lovers, boaters, anglers, and vacationers. Spanning 8.4 square miles and stretching across five towns—New Milford, Danbury, Brookfield, Sherman, and New Fairfield—this man-made reservoir is not only a recreational paradise but also a vital resource for hydroelectric power. With its pristine waters, scenic surroundings, and rich history, Candlewood Lake continues to be a cherished attraction for both locals and visitors alike.
The History of Candlewood Lake
Candlewood Lake was created in the late 1920s as part of a hydroelectric project by Connecticut Light & Power. The idea was to generate renewable energy by flooding the valley between New Milford and Danbury. The project involved relocating farms, homes, and cemeteries before the valley was filled with water. Today, remnants of this past, including submerged roads and stone walls, remain hidden beneath the lake's depths, adding a sense of mystery to its waters.
The lake takes its name from Candlewood Mountain, which was once a prominent landmark in the region. Since its completion, Candlewood Lake has become a recreational haven and an economic boost for the surrounding communities, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Recreational Activities at Candlewood Lake
Candlewood Lake offers a wide range of outdoor activities that cater to adventure seekers and relaxation enthusiasts alike.
1. Boating and Water Sports
With over 60 miles of shoreline and expansive open water, Candlewood Lake is a prime spot for boating, jet skiing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking. Several marinas around the lake offer boat rentals and docking facilities, making it accessible to both boat owners and visitors.
2. Fishing
Candlewood Lake is a renowned fishing destination, home to various fish species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, trout, and perch. The lake's unique structure, with its deep waters and underwater vegetation, creates an ideal habitat for fish, making it a popular location for competitive and recreational anglers.
3. Swimming and Beaches
During the summer months, Candlewood Lake’s beaches become a hotspot for families and sunbathers. Some of the best beaches include Lynn Deming Park in New Milford and Squantz Pond State Park in nearby New Fairfield. These areas provide safe swimming zones, picnic areas, and stunning views of the lake.
4. Hiking and Scenic Trails
The rolling hills surrounding Candlewood Lake offer numerous hiking and nature trails. Hikers can explore Lover’s Leap State Park in New Milford, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the lake from the cliffs. Other nearby trails, such as those in Pootatuck State Forest, offer a peaceful escape into nature.
5. Camping
For those who love the outdoors, camping near Candlewood Lake is a fantastic experience. While camping directly on the lake is limited, nearby campgrounds provide a rustic getaway with easy access to the lake's recreational offerings.
6. Wildlife Watching
Candlewood Lake is home to an abundance of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, deer, and various waterfowl. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy birdwatching or simply take in the serenity of the lake’s ecosystem.
The Waterfront Lifestyle and Real Estate
The picturesque setting of Candlewood Lake has made it a highly sought-after location for waterfront homes and vacation properties. The lake’s proximity to New York City (just 90 minutes away) makes it a perfect retreat for city dwellers looking to escape the urban hustle. Homes along the shoreline range from cozy cabins to luxurious lakefront estates, offering breathtaking views and direct water access.
Many of these properties have private docks, making boating and fishing incredibly convenient. The demand for real estate in this region continues to grow, driven by the lake’s charm and the lifestyle it offers.
Seasonal Attractions and Events
Spring and Summer
Spring brings fresh blooms and vibrant greenery to the Candlewood Lake region, making it a perfect time for hiking and fishing. As summer arrives, the lake becomes the centerpiece of outdoor fun. Boating events, fishing tournaments, and beachside barbecues make the warm months especially lively.
Fall Foliage
Autumn transforms Candlewood Lake into a breathtaking landscape of red, orange, and yellow hues. The crisp air and colorful foliage make it an ideal time for scenic drives, hiking, and photography. Fall is also a great time for bass fishing, as the cooler waters attract larger fish to the surface.
Winter Activities
While summer is the most popular season, winter at Candlewood Lake has its own charm. The lake often freezes over, providing opportunities for ice fishing, ice skating, and even snowmobiling. The surrounding trails become a winter wonderland for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Environmental Conservation and Lake Preservation
Preserving the health of Candlewood Lake is a top priority for local authorities and environmental groups. Organizations such as the Candlewood Lake Authority actively work to maintain water quality, prevent invasive species, and educate the public about sustainable lake usage.
Recent concerns, such as blue-green algae blooms and invasive zebra mussels, have prompted increased efforts to monitor and manage the lake’s ecosystem. Boaters are encouraged to clean their vessels before entering the lake to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Planning Your Visit
If you're planning a trip to Candlewood Lake, here are some essential tips:
Best Time to Visit: Summer is the most popular time, but fall and spring offer quieter experiences with stunning scenery.
Parking and Access: Public access points include town beaches and parks, but some areas require permits or seasonal passes.
Boating Regulations: Boaters should familiarize themselves with Connecticut’s boating laws, including speed limits and no-wake zones.
Safety Tips: Always wear a life jacket when boating or engaging in water sports. Be aware of weather conditions, as sudden storms can occur.
Conclusion
Candlewood Lake in New Milford, CT, is a true gem of New England. Whether you're looking for thrilling water sports, peaceful fishing spots, scenic hiking trails, or simply a serene place to relax, the lake has something for everyone. With its rich history, vibrant seasonal activities, and commitment to conservation, Candlewood Lake continues to be a beloved destination for generations of visitors. Plan your trip today and discover why this beautiful lake remains one of Connecticut’s most treasured natural wonders.

Why Professional Fence Installation Matters in Fairfield
Case in point, an excellently installed fence can most definitely accentuate your property as being secure. As a confidential, security-enhancing or a mere decorative aspect, the investment in fencing always allows for favorable equity growth in your residential or commercial estate. But never settle for making-do by going for DIY while you might consider fencing. To play safe from ultimate tragic eventuality like that of being uprooted by a mere windstorm, a professional fence will require enduring quality and appealing finesse. Professional installation for fence projects in Fairfield, California is a great need.
Tumblr media
Expertise and Experience
Professional fencing installers are well equipped with the knowledge and experience required to handle several types of fencing materials, such as wood, vinyl, aluminum, and chain link. These fencing installers offer a clear advantage, for they are trained in the proper techniques to ensure that the fence is assembled properly in accordance with acceptable standards. The real danger lies in not knowing how to install things properly: Some DIYs may end up with uneven fencing, while others may have a weak foundation or an improper post which could mean that when the system is installed the fence has no chance of durability or stability.
Compliance with Local Regulations
Fairfield, along with many other towns, has its zoning ordinances as well as some building codes that regulate how fences can be installed. Professional fence contractors have knowledge of these regulations and will acquire the necessary permits at a time before beginning on any project. This ensures the legal installation of your fence, and you avoid heavy fines or having to risk having it dismantled and done all over as a result of non-compliance.
Quality Materials and Proper Tools
You get the widest possible range of top-quality fencing materials when you hire a professional fencing firm. The millions of fencing work years of experience add up to buying relationships with suppliers selling fencing materials at an environment-based price. The fact that most people fail to take into consideration is that, in addition to the fencing, the professional fence maker also possesses the exact instruments to achieve precision, efficacy, and complete compliance with fences.
Time and Cost Efficiency
Even if DIYing sounds like a pocket sling, it has different unexpected costs creeping out of faults, waste, and repairs. Professionals clear out the process by making sure from the get-go that there are no delays where they should not be. Having done the job repeatedly, they have acquired the ability to smell trouble; they see it and kill it immediately, ultimately sparing one all the hustle and time and money in the long run.
Enhanced Curb Appeal and Property Value
A beautifully and correctly put fence will boost a property's beauty and its pricing. Either due to traditional wooden fencing or ever growing collections in the modern world of vinyl fencing, a willingness is natural for professionals to create a fence that best matches your property. The exertions in improving a fencing project that would turn a once stark patio yard into massive wealth, given its location, would absolutely provide whatever curb appeal at the time of selling would allow an otherwise highly regarded document.
Durability and Longevity
Fences built by professionals are typically intended to endure harsh weather conditions and the abuse of everyday life. Post fixings and post holes done in the best possible way, using coated, pressure-treated wood and quality, professional installations compatible with one another are far more likely to result in the likelihood of a longer life span and fewer repair issues. In comparison, at a faster rate would be the collapse of moderate sawyers used on amateur-grade fence installations.
Warranty and Post-Installation Support
Thus, anyone opting against hiring a licensed professional may take responsibility for any errors that may emerge with respect to the burglar fence. This may sometime prove costly and time-consuming.
Customized Solutions for Your Needs
Each property is its world with different fencing needs, whether for security reasons, keeping pets safe, privacy, or just decoration. Fence-installation professionals offer their tailor-made solutions to satisfy your specific fencing needs. They operate by analyzing your property’s contours, terrain properties, air quality, sun exposure, etc, to recommend the best possible types of fencing to cater to your future plans.
Tumblr media
Safety Considerations
The installation of a fence is a job that requires some elbow-grease, power tools, and hefty materials. Although it exposes the layperson to accidents by not employing the right precautions, hiring trained personnel does obviate this added risk. And all the way round, the professionals guarantee safety-first functionality with the comfort of being safe.
The Smart Choice: Professional Fence Installation for Lasting Benefits
Investing in professional fence installation in Fairfield is a decision that guarantees quality, compliance, and long-term benefits. While DIY projects may seem appealing, the risks and challenges often outweigh the initial savings. Hiring professionals ensures that your fence is installed correctly, enhancing your property’s security, aesthetics, and value. Whether you need a residential or commercial fence, expert installers provide the best results, making your investment worthwhile.
For top-notch fencing solutions, consider reaching out to Fairfield’s trusted fence installation experts. A well-built fence not only enhances your property but also provides lasting peace of mind. Get started today with a consultation and experience the difference professional installation makes!
