"INNES HAS A HABIT OF LOSING MONEY," Toronto Star. October 1, 1912. Page 3. --- Second Offence of Dropping Employer's Cash Leads to a Long Term. --- CASES IN POLICE COURT --- Two Men With Two Bags of Potatoes, Which They Say Were Given to Them. --- Though there was little force behind the blow which Thomas Petrie directed at Constable Young's face, Magistrate Denison chose to fine the intent rather than the act when the man came up in the Police Court.
"Was taking his name," Young stated, "when he struck me."
Petrie's two fines, for drunkenness and assault, were a dollar and costs. each, or thirty days, with time to pay.
The Sentences Grow. The sentences of Edward Innes have been somewhat disproportionate. This morning before Magistrate Denison, he admitted that while working as a collector for Joseph McQuilian's liquor store in Queen street west he retained $11.80 from the returns, and offered the defence that if he was given time he would refund the money and have it taken out of his wages.
"I lost it," he suggested.
"It's not the first time he's lost money," Crown Attorney Corley. commented. "A year ago when he was given $400 to buy Exhibition tickets he lost that. His term then was sixty days." Now, for the theft of of the much smaller amount, Innes will go to Central for a much longer term, four months.
Two Bags of Potatoes. Once more Charles Beamish, an aged character well known to the police, is charged with theft. Last night he was taken by Constable Ox-land, who saw him walking away with a bag of potatoes on his shoulder. A few paces behind was Lou Parsons, with a like load. The constable, knowing Beamish, went after the stranger first.
"Parsons dropped his load and ran," Oxland stated, "but I caught them both."
The charge is that the potatoes were stolen from a G.T.R. box car.
"Given to me," declared Beamish, confidently.
"Whom by?"
"Don't know his name."
"Where does he live?" "Don't know."
"Who is the kind man, anyway?" Magistrate Denison demanded, a bit impatiently.
Finally Beamish decided it was either the carmen or an officer of the M.O.H. Department. The couple remain in jail a week until they can give more definite information.
After arresting Mrs. Louisa Fifield as she came out of Eaton's. Detective Wickett want to her home at Prescott avenue, West Toronto, and a large quantity of goods, which the woman is charged with stealing.
When arrested with her 12-year-old daughter Queenie, Mrs. Fifield had an umbrella and six shirt waists which could not be accounted for by sales checks which could not be accounted for.
Ivy, another daughter. aged 15. working at Gillies' factory. 121 Prescott avenue, the police say, has admitted the theft of 11 neck scarfs, 197 neckties, 4 spools of silk, and a spool of brass wire.
The bundle of goods that the police recovered includes ribbons of all recovered in sizes, fancy lace bags, six umbrellas, lace, shirt waists, collars, hat plumes, and numerous small decorative articles. More were recovered this morning but none of the articles have yet been identified as coming from the Eaton Store.
When Mrs. Fifield appeared in Police Court, T. C. Robinette, reserved election and did not obtaining a week's adjournment.
Detective Wickett was with woman most of the morning, but she denies stealing the goods. She came to this country about nine months and ago.
Accused of Burglary Wm. J. Bell is being held in connection with the shopbreaking at 280 Church street on the night of September 14, when the warehouse of the John Sloan Company, wholesale grocers, was broken into and burglarized. Entrance was forced through a rear window, several desks were broken open, and the burglar, whether Bell or another, proved so clever that he found the combination of the be vault. About 260 postage stamps, $28.07 in cash, medals, and a quantity of jewelry was stolen.
Bell was placed under arrest on King street by Detective Mitchell in pawnshop, where it is alleged he was attempting to dispose of jewelry which, the police say, corresponded to the stolen articles.
Bell was remanded a week without bail.
A Real Estate Deal. "If you can't do business better than that you had better not do it at all. You've been here before. If you come again I'll know better how to deal with you." Those were the comments of Magistrate Denison to William Campbell, a real estate dealer, charged with the theft of $320 from Adam McMillan. There was a conviction, with a remand till called upon.
McMillan said that he bought a lot in Brandon for $320, and that when was fully paid for Campbell kept putting him off for several weeks and never furnished the deed.
Campbell's defence was that he had purchased a group of lots and that he hadn't fully paid for them to obtain the deeds himself.
"Carrying them on McMillan's money," the magistrate commented. "That is no way to do business. But you'll be remanded till called on." Campbell will now furnish the deed.
Back to Blue Grass Land. Hyde Nelson, colored, declares he will go back to his Kentucky home, and Robert Beatty is short $5. Beatty said that ten days ago he handed the colored man the amount at the Woodbine, to put on a "sure thing" which really won.
"And I never got my winnings," was the complaint.
As Nelson was positive he passed the money along to a third person who misplaced it, the ten days already spent in jail seemed enough, that is, if he keeps nis promise to get town.
Chinese Liquor. "Ing Kopy" was the plain English lettering on a carafe of Chinese wine which was seized upon the the premises of Ing Ding at 192 York street by the police when Inspector Dickson led a search party through the Chinese quarter two weeks ago..The charge was illegal sales and keeping.
"'Ing Kopy' means medicinal wine," explained J. W. Carry, defence counsel. "The proper analysis is printed on the side. That complies with the law."
Not when written in Chinese," Magistrate Denison replied.
Some of the police contended that the while the liquid was labelled "Ing Kopy," it was in reality only whisky colored red. As a test, the magistrate had whiffed a little from a glass, thought it was stronger than rose wise, and demanded an analysis. Ding was accordingly allowed a week's remand.
Lee Dun of 184 York street, was to have sold whitish stuff rice wine, for which his fine was $100 and costs or 3 months.
A Real Estate Deal After several remands, John Hanley, real estate agent, was convicted of false pretences. The complainant was John Bain, who stated he placed Welland and Port McNicol lots in Hanley hands for sale.
"He told me he had a buyer," Bain explained, "so I gave him $35 commission. Then he turned in a $100 check from a bogus buyer, and I couldn't get the money."
The court allowed Hanley three weeks remand to produce this buyer, but when he still failed to do so this morning, he was sent to to jail for 20 days.
John A. Brooker, of 54 Margueretta street, was fined $100 and costs for illegal liquor sales. The case has been on the books since July 20.

In today's market, a notable shift is underway—a growing number of direct-to-consumer brands are emerging as fierce competitors to traditional luxury brands. These so-called "dupe" brands are capitalizing on a crucial consumer sentiment: the feeling of being priced out of luxury goods. As luxury brands cater to the ultra-wealthy and fast fashion dominates the low-end market, middle-class consumers find themselves yearning for quality and style without the exorbitant price tag. With transparent pricing and an emphasis on social media marketing, these dupe brands are redefining consumer expectations in significant ways. The term "dupe" originates from duplication, yet it also reflects a broader consumer frustration about the pricing strategies of established luxury brands. E-commerce correspondent Malique Morris highlights this sentiment succinctly: “Luxury brands have exponentially raised their prices for hip products in a way that is locking out middle-class shoppers who typically could splurge on a few nice bags or a few nice sweaters a year.” As luxury brands continually hike their prices, many consumers are left feeling confused and excluded. This sentiment is catalyzing the rise of brands like Quince and Italic, which focus on affordability without compromising on quality. These brands offer products manufactured in the same factories as high-end brands but at a fraction of the cost. The price transparency they provide is refreshing for consumers who are struggling with rising living costs. Morris points out that, “Dupe brands are almost annoyingly transparent about pricing…that’s refreshing for middle-class shoppers who are seeing the prices of things like milk and eggs rise inexplicably.” One of the defining characteristics of dupe brands is their deep engagement with consumers on social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram. Influencers play a pivotal role in showcasing these affordable alternatives to high-end products, often leading to virality and a significant bump in sales. However, as with any trend, there is uncertainty regarding its sustainability. Morris warns that if consumer interest in dupes wanes, these brands may find their social media leverage diminishing quickly. While price is currently the main attraction for dupe brands, they must evolve beyond simply being cheaper alternatives. They must cultivate a distinctive brand narrative and develop unique products that resonate with their audience. Morris encourages these brands to consider critical questions such as, “What is our storytelling? What are our products that are unique to us?” By answering these questions, dupe brands can differentiate themselves in a crowded market and move beyond the label of merely being cheaper versions of luxury goods. The marketplace dynamics reshaped by dupe culture are not solely beneficial to consumers. They pose significant challenges for luxury brands as well. As these dupes become more mainstream, luxury brands are realizing they must articulate why their products justify high prices. Ignoring this shift could result in losing relevance among consumers who are increasingly reluctant to spend hundreds or thousands on luxury items. Furthermore, the rise of dupe brands raises ethical questions regarding the sustainability of fashion and its impact on independent designers. The widespread availability of dupes has made it easier for consumers to access luxury aesthetics, but it has also complicated the business landscape for many contemporary designers. These independent creators struggle to compete against companies that replicate successful designs at lower price points. In light of this evolving landscape, luxury brands are faced with a pivotal moment. They must respond to the growing consumer shift toward affordability and accessibility without alienating their traditional customer base. This means being more communicative about their pricing structures and emphasizing the value in craftsmanship, materials, and brand heritage.
Moreover, luxury brands could benefit from investing in collaborations or limited-edition collections that appeal to a broader audience without completely drifting from their core identity. Brands like Quince and Italic illustrate the power of direct-to-consumer strategies, merging quality with affordability, and capitalizing on the middle-class yearning for stylish products. As they reshape the market, consumers are adding a valuable layer to the conversation about value and quality in fashion. As the battle between classic luxury and up-and-coming dupes intensifies, the landscape of fashion retail appears poised for transformation. The outcome of this clash will dictate the future of consumer expectations and reshape the fundamental principles of pricing in the luxury sector.

Here again with a story idea 😂 A day where all the brothers have plans for to go out but there's sudden expected construction work outside their house so they literally can't leave?!? (Let's assume the Matsu parents didn't think their NEETS really had anything to do outdoors that day so they didn't bother to informing them about it haha) Maybe either a hilarious series of escape events or forced family bonding time? 😂
Ah, @yisongye Here it is!! 😂😂 I hope you enjoy my interpretation of this very interesting 2020 experience 🤣🤣🤣
~~~
The bedroom door slid open and slammed against the wall, and he screamed out, “Hey, guys! Guess what!”
Karamatsu raised his chin from the hand mirror, smirking. “Yes, my dear older brother Osomatsu? What might you have upon you as to call for your excitement?”
“There’s this really big gamble that’s gonna happen in Pachinko today from a visitor!” Osomatsu informed, a pair of fists rocking in his exhilaration. “And here’s the big deal: she’s a chick! A very pretty one too! I have no idea what she would want as a penalty aside from money but I’m dead-set on challenging her!” Osomatsu flushed, sultry in a green fantasy. “Ooh man, oh boy, I’m not just gonna give her a run on her money! I’m gonna challenge her into having s** with me!” He laughed maniacally, a predator’s villainous cackle.
Todomatsu scoffed in amusement, rolling his eyes. “Well, try as hard as you want. You’ll never succeed—you’ll be a virgin NEET forever.” He angled his phone, checking himself in the selfie feature of his camera. “On the other hand, there’s a very nice girl that Atsushi informed me will come to the mixer. I’m planning on going out to buy myself a nice new jacket later so I can look nicer come Friday. There is a sale at the mall, after all, so I wouldn’t want to miss it.”
“Can that beat my luck though?” Choromatsu boasted, popping the collar of his green shirt. “I managed to get VIP passes to Nyaa-chan’s concert. So all of you might be hopeful, but I’m meeting my cat idol in a few hours. So weep in your misery, everyone. Your Choromatsu is going forth into another world.”
“Heh,” Karamatsu retorted, narrowing a perpetually theatrical gaze. “Might I remind you first, my brother. Fap none of the dazzling women that might catch your eye, no? Set a good example to all of your brothers, non?”
With his smile wilting, Choromatsu sputtered as his face went rosy. “Wh-Wh—You shut the hell up, Shittymatsu! I know stuff, you moron!”
“Heh! Good for you, brother! For my luck shines upon me like it came from heaven itself!” Karamatsu flashed them his teeth, touching an eyebrow with two fingers. “You see, my brother, my day too flows with the passionate love from Akatsuka-sensei himself! Today I have been welcomed passage into the core of Akatsuka Ward itself, and I am to meet with a lady of whom I blind date for us was set! Hm, I thank Chibita for his kind heart, how could I have known that he would know such a precious soulBOEHH!”
Ichimatsu slammed the back of Karamatsu’s head with an unplugged iron, and Karamatsu tumbled down onto the floor. “I bet your sorry ass that you’ll be meeting up with a dishwasher, you piece of crap.”
Jyushimatsu hollered out, “As fun as meeting with girls sounds nice, me and Ichi-nii decided to go to Sealand instead! There’s this annual dolphin show that happens every so often, and after attending it once I decided to invite him to the next one! I spent my entire allowance on getting us front-row tickets, so he has a nice experience when watching the show! The dolphins are always trained so well, once I had a dream of wanting to be one too.”
Ichimatsu grinned slightly, amused. “Hm, and after that I’ll be taking Jyushimatsu to the cat shelter. I’ve made an appointment to adopt one of the cats there—Mom and Dad already let me. She’s a very young one, about two months old, found beside a river where she almost drowned. I felt bad for her and decided to keep her so she doesn’t drown herself again. Her name’s Kawa, and she’s a plain white one. I hope she likes it here at the household with me.”
“Awwww~” the collective chorus of his brothers cooed lovingly, and Ichimatsu flushed bright pink and turned away with his hands smashed to his ears.
“Shut up! Stop shedding attention to my shitty life!” Ichimatsu exclaimed miserably.
“Either way, it seems that all of us have plans for today,” Choromatsu laughed, over from his former humiliation as he shrugged his backpack on entirely. “Anyway I need to go now. The arena could get pretty crowded if I came in much later than twelve.”
Osomatsu darted his gaze to the clock to Choromatsu then back again. “But it’s eight-thirty.”
“The earlier the better.” Choromatsu lifted his shoulders, chuckling. “Perhaps I can eat lunch while waiting too. Can’t watch a concert with an empty stomach. We need energy for screaming at the top of our lungs.”
“As if you don’t do that everyday already,” Osomatsu murmured, but remained unheard.
To Choromatsu, “Yeah, I agree,” Todomatsu said, standing up from the couch and patting his pants. “I’d better get to the mall early before it gets too crowded. I mean, sales are still sales, aren’t they? I don’t wanna be stuck in a traffic of people before I see something pretty.” He directed himself towards the cabinet and rummaged through the pockets of one of his hoodies, grabbing his wallet and stashing it into his current pants. “Yep. Imma go for now. See you all later?”
“Yeah, sure!” Jyushimatsu exclaimed, waving. “Later! Have fun!”
“Kiss Reika for me, okay, Fappymatsu?” Osomatsu derided, the curves of his features smug.
Choromatsu scoffed in reply as Todomatsu tittered, and then the bedroom door shut as Choromatsu and Todomatsu exited.
A minute passed.
And then...
“EEEHHH???!!!”
The rest of the Matsuno household were already out the bedroom and down the stairs, sliding into sudden halts as they saw Choromatsu and Todomatsu frozen in front of their door. They were both with mouths so rounded that their jaws were on the floor, their eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets. Their fingers were spread out from their hands at their sides, legs parted.
“Totty? What’s wrong?” But then all the other four were soon to realize it, and with matching, elongated yells all six were better classified with the term ‘identical’ as they all sported the same gawking, disbelieved expressions.
In front of their front door, the ground was a literal swimming pool of wet cement. Across that, there were careless-of-them construction workers with complete top-volume cranes and drillers, the workers saluting each other and bearing wide blueprints as long as a man was tall. This occupied the front porch all the way to their gate, nearly tore down completely, now granting the brothers a perfect view of Matsuyo and Matsuzo as they stared at their own sons, a pair of shopping bags dangling from their mother’s arms.
“Wh...” The first with a voice managing to come out his lips, Choromatsu averted his gaze to their parents. “Mom?! What in bloody hell is this?!”
“Ah, that!” Matsuyo laughed, unbothered in the slightest by the unexpected construction. “It’s just a bit of construction, my NEETs! I didn’t think I needed to tell you since you can handle yourselves, but never mind that! Don’t worry! It’ll only be about three days until you can go outside the house again.”
“Three days?!” Osomatsu exclaimed, face contorting in horror. “But that sexy-chick gambler will leave the city in three days!”
After shooting his brother a pointed look, Karamatsu yelled out the more proper response to their mother’s statement, “How are we supposed to leave the house?! And how are you two getting back in?!”
“Ah, don’t worry about us,” Matsuzo said, chuckling lightheartedly. “We booked a stay at the hotel about a week ago because we knew about this. Plus we bought a ton of groceries last week, so the fridge was practically an entire factory of sushi and takoyaki. I’m still surprised that there was only about a shelf left of it before we left the house three hours ago.”
“Th-That was our storage?!” Todomatsu sputtered. “Our food?!”
“Gee, I wonder where all of it went,” Ichimatsu sarcastically drawled, maliciously digging a dagger-sharp gaze against Jyushimatsu, who had gone from pale to red in a matter of seconds through the transition of realization to shame.
“No, we can’t survive this!” Osomatsu protested, gesturing wildly at the commotion lining each space of their front. “Mom! Dad! This is worse than suicide! No, we need to get out of this house! You can’t expect us to stay locked in here the entire three days, do you?! We’re your sons! You know that!”
“And we’re your parents,” Matsuyo retorted, her glare making Osomatsu and his brothers all shrink. “And you know well enough that we hate it when you have no consciences. This is punishment for illegally performing on the streets a month ago just to get money for a fish sale for Totoko’s sake! Grow up! Cod, you’re all a bunch of oversized children. You’re lucky we still gave you a storage of takoyaki.” Turning her nose up, she said, “Let’s go, Matsuzo-dear. We have that specialized screening on that one movie, right?”
“Of course, darling,” Matsuzo said devilishly, internally guffawing at his son’s anxieties. “Shall we?” He extended his arm.
“My pleasure.”
All six began yelling in unison as their parents began walking away, striding off with the pride of victory and the blessing of their lack of child tomfoolery. The brothers all tumbled down defeatedly on the floor, groaning in exasperation. It was Jyushimatsu who remained standing, mind calculative as his pupils dilated and his mouth was covered by a hand. Then...
“I think I can make that jump.”
“Ah, I see you wanna die early,” Todomatsu chortled groggily, unimpressed. “Ichimatsu-niisan, take notes. Your medal’s been snatched.”
“No!” Jyushimatsu contradicted. “I think I can make that jump! Then when I do, I’ll get all of you a ladder or something so you can get across.”
“Sure, I believe you,” Osomatsu said casually, pouting. “You’re the same guy who can turn into a living Jyushimatsu virus. If you can jump that gorge of death then go for it.”
“Idiots, it won’t work,” Choromatsu finalized, crossing his arms. “He won’t make it. Trust me.”
~~~
“Or not. Of course. I rest my case.”
Preparing himself, Jyushimatsu bent his legs.
“On three, Jyushimatsu,” Ichimatsu announced. “One...two...three!”
Jyushimatsu bolted, and with the speed of a fictional being he raced across the entire room until his feet were no longer on the ground, and he was hovering in the air, his shadow overlapping gray as his form paralleled the top of their doorframe. He was only by the first half of the entire cement pool when gravity played its part and tugged him downwards.
With his arms up, Jyushimatsu yelled out a stainless “BOEHBAA!!”, only stopping when a cross-crossed surface dug into his butt and he was pulled back into the house.
And dropped on the floor with a thud, tilting his head towards Todomatsu and the butterfly net he had in his hands. “Thanks, Totty.”
“I told you it won’t work,” Choromatsu grouched.
“Work or not, where was this butterfly net from?” Todomatsu questioned, scratching his head in confusion.
Jyushimatsu said, “I also got it from Dayon’s stomach.”
Todomatsu immediately panicked, dropping the net and struggling for the closest sink.
“Aha! I have a new plan!” Karamatsu extolled, spreading his arms wide. “My brothers, this plan of mine is guaranteed to entrance our grand exit! Be amazed, my brothers! We shall be able to access our hopes and dreams on finding the romance, enjoyment, and entertainment that our lives have waited for! My brothers, join me!” He began spinning around dramatically, a hand sailing to his back pocket for a rain of rose petals that he sprayed over the floor. “Grab a pen, and wonderful stationary. We are writing letters.”
Everyone stared at him dumbfounded, except for Ichimatsu, who bluntly said, “Kill me now.”
Minutes later, all six of them were gathered around the living room table, color-coded papers assigned to each brother. At the center of the table was a pack of markers, as well as some glitters none of them (but Karamatsu, apparently) knew they even had. At the head of the table, Karamatsu smirked at them, a finger-gun connected to his jawline as his sunglasses hid his dancing eyes. “Now, pick up a pen,” he instructed.
They all did, grabbing the marker colored with the hue of the sibling closest to them. Karamatsu picked last, raising his pink marker. “Step two, revisit your talents in mastery. Perfect, swooping calligraphy, as a dazzling prince such as us possesses.”
“Bro, I failed art class because of calligraphy,” Osomatsu deadpanned.
“Now,” Karamatsu pronounced as if no one had spoken, “Take the tip of your pen to the page. Then with the watery softness of a fountain, draw the letter ‘I’.”
Though hesitant, everyone followed.
“Good, my brothers. Next, add a space. Then, the letter ‘L’.”
They obeyed.
“Brothers, the letter ‘O’.”
They complied.
“The letter ‘V—”
“Karamatsu-niisan, what’s the message you’re making us write?” Choromatsu asked bluntly.
“Um...” Karamatsu made a heart with his hands, smiling boldly, “It will say, ‘I love you, dear cement! Please let us pass through your jinxes, allow us passage because you reciprocate my feelings to you!’ Oh, brother, the ground will harden almost immediately because of passion! I can see her heart beating from our kindness! Oh, brother, my brother, it shall make her weep tears of rock that would melt into a river of the soul! I see it, brother! It shall work, brother!” He was dancing in his reverie, nearly crying. “Oh, brother, my brother, sweet brother—BOEH!”
He collapsed on the ground, and Ichimatsu dropped his fist. “How about, ‘Brother, shut the eff up’.”
“Ugh, this sucks!” Todomatsu whined, tossing his paper away. “You’re all stupid and useless! Now I’m never gonna be able to look attractive enough for the new girl.” He buried his head in his arms on the table. “It’s hopeless for me. I need to be stuck with a bunch of ‘overgrown children’ until Atsushi sweeps her off her feet.”
“No.” Osomatsu stood up, all serious. Everyone looked at him. “There’s still hope. I think there’s one more thing we can do before we can say that we failed.”
Choromatsu lackadaisically suggested, “Request the construction workers for a way across?”
“Even better.” Osomatsu straightened his body, chin up, spine vertical. “Everyone. Off to the roof.”
Silence (...)...
“...eh?”
It was even louder on the roof than outside, because the entire view was there to present itself. The machines were huge, matted with soil and cement, some of the yellow on the bodies faded or whitened. Five of the six of them watched the entire thing with fearful anticipation, the giants in front of their house like dragons hovering over a field of lava. Whatever plan this Osomatsu-niisan of theirs had, it had better be worth it. Because so far, it looked like death was going to be the option here if it weren’t success.
“Boys,” Osomatsu announced, hands on his waist. “It’s time. Jyushimatsu, come here.”
Gulping, Jyushimatsu didn’t protest as he allowed himself to be led by his oldest brother, scarily close to the edge of the roof. Sweat ran down the sides of his face, his legs trembling in his discomfort. But he stayed there with his hands at his sides, staring straight and down towards the valley of Tartarus below.
“Karamatsu, come here,” Osomatsu instructed, and with the same worrisome posture Karamatsu stepped next to his eldest and fifth-born brother. “Karamatsu, go over Jyushimatsu’s shoulders.”
Karamatsu sputtered, and Choromatsu let out a “NO!” louder than the entire construction company combined.
But Choromatsu was ignored as Karamatsu timidly climbed onto Jyushimatsu’s back, and rested his thighs over Jyushimatsu’s shoulders. Both of them were perspired and horrified, already awaiting doom before a signal can even be clarified. Jyushimatsu clasped Karamatsu’s legs like it was giving him reassurance, but the threat of failure was still too strong for that.
“Ichimatsu, you next!” Osomatsu called out, and Ichimatsu greenly approached the building tower with his chin dipped and his eyes sullen. Internally, he was mouthing his last will and testament.
But he climbed nonetheless onto Karamatsu’s shoulders.
“Okay, my turn.” Osomatsu climbed onto Ichimatsu’s shoulders, and the weight began tugging down on Jyushimatsu as a wobble began to wrack their brother building. Hands grabbed legs, butts nestled tightly against napes, and lips went pressed as three of them stifled the screams that were growing in their throats.
“Choromatsu! You’re up!”
“This is dangerous, you idiot eldest!” Choromatsu reprimanded, arms wide for emphasis. “No more kidding—you’re literally trying to kill us!”
“Wouldn’t you die for Nyaa-chan?” Osomatsu inquired calmly.
Choromatsu was up over Osomatsu’s shoulders ten seconds later.
“Finally! Totty!”
On top of the tower, Todomatsu shook harshly as he grabbed the sides of Choromatsu’s head for dear life, legs intertwined over Choromatsu’s chest. Actually, most of them were like that. The only exception was the oldest brother, as determined as an eagle, staring straight through the obstacles separating him from making out with a beautiful gambling girl.
“Jyushimatsu, on three, run back, and then jump.”
“We’re gonna die,” Ichimatsu rasped with a plastic smile.
“Yup,” Karamatsu agreed in a tiny voice.
“On three, Jyushimatsu,” Osomatsu repeated, fiercer, and Jyushimatsu stepped back, all his brothers doing the same with the connections binding them in that formation. Jyushimatsu’s legs were shuddering. The pores on his skin were leaking.
“One...two...THREE!!!”
Eyes shut, Jyushimatsu made his run and jumped.
A few seconds later, at the other side of the gate, there were six bodies lying on the streets they’ve cracked, car horns roaring angrily in the traffic they caused.
~~~
Matsuyo tapped her feet. “I don’t think I need to scold you anymore. You know very well what you’ve done, right?” She crossed her arms, tilted her chin. “And because of that, there won’t be any more takoyaki. Not just because you absolutely don’t deserve it anymore, but because we can’t afford it.”
“Eh? Why not?” Osomatsu asked, then whimpered when he tried to move his head a little. With a full body cast matching those of his brothers’, there was no twitching a pinkie nor a strand of hair on the hospital beds.
“Not only because I have six sons confined with full body casts following surgery,” Matsuyo said madly, “but because of the damage! Not only did you break almost every bone in your body but you broke the road itself! There’s gonna be so much construction in front of our house now and guess what! We are the ones who need to pay for it!”
“Are we that fat?” Karamatsu sobbed.
“Think about what you did, you NEETs,” Matsuzo moaned, massaging his temples. “This didn’t just ruin our day with all these expenses. But your day too. Didn’t you all have anything better to do?” With that, Matsuzo and Matsuyo left the room, shutting the door behind them.
When they were completely gone, Jyushimatsu whimpered, “So...No dolphin show?”
“No cat...?” Ichimatsu followed up miserably.
“No clothes...?” Todomatsu wept.
“No Nyaa-chan...?!” Choromatsu cried.
“No date?!” Karamatsu tearfully yelled.
“No sexy-as-hell gambling babe?” Osomatsu whispered.
They all went quiet.
Then together, they all cried as one.
Chapter 11 Fieldwork: The Biography of a Chocolate Bar
The candy I chose: Hershey’s Milk Chocolate King Size
1. What are the ingredients? (perhaps start with cocoa, the primary ingredient)
Milk Chocolate [Sugar; Milk; Chocolate; Cocoa Butter; Milk Fat; Lecithin (Soy); PGPR; Natural Flavor]
2. Where do the ingredients come from?
70% of the world's cocoa comes from Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Cameroon. Three of the world’s largest producers of sugar are India, Brazil, and Thailand. France, Russia, and Germany produce most of the world's milk. Brazil produces most of the world’s soy.
3. How are the ingredients produced?
Cocoa beans are roasted, stripped, and then pressed to separate the fat from the beans which is the cocoa butter. Sugar cane is crushed in order to extract its juices, then its clean and concentrated into a syrup. Sugar crystals will then form and become what we call raw sugar. Soybeans are planted and grown by farmers then they are collected, cleaned, and bagged.
4. What are the working conditions of the people who produce the cocoa?
“...she said she’s spent the last three months lifting boxes of Hershey’s Kisses for $8.35 an hour in a warehouse with 400 other foreign students. … Her rent, about $400 a month, is automatically deducted from her paycheck. What’s left over must cover her expenses. … “I complain. I say, ‘I want another job.’ They say if I do not work here they will cancel my visa and I will go home.”” These quotes came from an article titled “Foreign students who work at Hershey warehouse say 'we have our rights'” written by Nick Malawskey. This article talks about the unfair working conditions that foriegn exchange students were subjected to while they were forced to work in Hershey’s warehouses. They were underpaid, overworked, and subjected to unfair/poor conditions so all the workers decided to protest and organize a sit in outside the centers gates until they were given their rights.
5. How do the producers get the cocoa to the market?
After farmers grow, frement, dry, clean and pack the beans. They sell them off to intermediaries.
6. How are the prices set?
When I went to the store the chocolate was on sale, so I bought it for $1.88. The regular price for the chocolate was $2.19. But overall chocolate prices are set based upon supply and demand.
7. Which international corporations dominate the chocolate trade?
(In the order of who's the most successful) Mars Wrigley, Ferrero, and Mondelez International dominate the chocolate trade.
8. Who regulates the trade?
The FDA regulates the chocolate trade.
9. How is chocolate marketed?
Companies' market tactics are based on what appeals to their consumers whether it's through flashy logos, the size or weight of their bars, or extra ingredients (stuff like fruit, or even alcohol). For example Cadbury chocolate targets their ads towards kids ages 5-10 because they are more likely to like chocolate. They use bright colors and animals in their commercials to appeal to children more.
10. Where did you buy your chocolate bar?
I bought my chocolate from CVS.
11. How much profit does a store owner make on one chocolate bar?
A store owner will get profit margins between 55% to 75%.
12. Are there hidden costs that are not included in the price you paid? (Consider underpayment of labor; environmental impact; government subsidies that are direct [to the company] and indirect [infrastructure such as roads, ports, bridges, and water systems]; and the healthcare costs created by the harvesting, transporting, processing, and eating of this food.)
The unsafe conditions that workers are subjected to, the underpayment of their labor, and their rights being disregarded for the company's profit are the hidden costs that we don’t realize we are paying for.
Biography
Starting off as a seed than growing into a sproutling in a West African farm, the cocoa bean will eventually mature into a full grown tree where it will then be harvested, roasted, stripped, some are pressed into cocoa butter. After the cocoa butter and cocoa beans are harvested they’re cleaned, packaged, and sold to intermediaries who then sell them to exporters. Once the product reaches the factory of whichever candy maker has bought it its then used to make chocolate, which will then be advertised towards their target audiences preferences. Afterwards the chocolate will be shipped and distributed to stores for consumers to buy.
Where does Tea come from & how is it graded?
Tea was reportedly created over 5,000 years ago in China. The tea comes from the  Camellia Sinensis plant (a species of Evergreen) which is native to China but also grown in other parts of the world. So Tea is now grown in several Asian countries. Rooibos is grown in Africa and Yerba Mate in South America. These do not come from the Camellia Sinensis plant and are considered tisanes or herbal drinks even though they are called tea.
Tumblr media
Now most tea plants have a growth period in warmer months and a dormant period during the winter. Teas are typically harvested at least once or twice a year. The first harvest (first flush) is during the spring and the second harvest (second flush) is during the summer and so on.  In cooler conditions at higher elevations, harvesting seasons can change.
Tea’s quality and taste is influenced by both the environment and how and when the tea is processed. Tea plants typically grow best in acidic soil and regions with heavy rainfall (around 40 inches per year), however they can be grown anywhere from sea level to altitudes as high as 1.3 miles above sea level. That means these processes have a direct effect on the market price.
Processing
Tea is typically handpicked so as not to damage the leaf. This can be an expensive process. So growers keep the plants in the early stage of growth by constantly pruning and picking buds and leaves from the top of the plant. Once a bud is picked or a leaf is cut, it will began to oxidize so when enough leaves are gathered, they are taken directly to the factory for processing.
What is oxidation?  The best way that I know to describe oxidation for tea is this, for instance; When oxygen or air reaches the freshly cut stem or bud of the leaf, it will start to “brown” like an apple or banana.  The Collins dictionary describes oxidation as a process in which a chemical substance changes because of the addition of oxygen.
The Four Main Types
Although teas come in many different varieties, there are four main types white, black, green and oolong tea. To clarify, all tea comes from the same type of plant. THowever, the specific variety of the plant and the way it is processed and oxidized will determine which tea is made.
White and Black Tea
White tea is made using the first buds and young leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant and they are usually only plucked once a year. The little buds that form are covered with little silver hairs so that make the young leaves appear white. The leaves are steamed or fried to stop oxidation and then dried. It is the least processed of teas and has a high concentrations of catechins which are present in fresh tea leaves. The buds can also be shielded from sunlight to reduce chlorophyll production.
Black tea is made using whole leaves that are cut and allowed to wither.  Withering occurs when a leaf is cut.  It is the natural process of wilting.  So controlled withering caused reduced moisture or water in the leaf. Then the leaves are set aside to dry and continue to oxidize. This causes the chemical composition of the leaf to change. The longer the leaves are allowed to oxidize, the darker the leaves will be. A lengthy oxidation process is what gives black tea its distinct, bold flavor.
Green and Oolong Tea
Green tea begins in the same way as black tea but the amount of time allowed for oxidation is different, which gives you drastically different results. The leaves are sometimes only allowed to wither slightly.  They are then either pan-fired, oven-dried or steamed to prevent further oxidation. These leaves keep their green color and produce a lighter, more grassy taste.
Oolong tea is made using buds at the top mature bushes. They can be harvested 3 or 4 times a year and quality varies depending on the season. Spring and autumn flusher are higher quality that summer flushes. Leaves picked during early spring are generally considered to have the highest quality. The most exotic Oolong tea, Champagne Oolong, uses younger leaves consisting of one-bud-and-two-leaf. The Harvesting is similar to green and white tea.
How is Tea Graded?
Tumblr media
 This can be a bit confusing. Just remember that typically only black tea is graded (and not all brands) and there is no one universal system. It is commonly used in loose-leaf tea by retailers who specialize in British and other Western tea cultures.  So grades can very based on processing and even manufacturing because tea grades are designated by the producers.
For example in Japan grading is ranked downwards: Extra Choicest, Choicest, Choice, Finest, Fine, Good Medium, Medium, Good Common, Common, Nubs, to Fannings and Dust. While in China, teas are usually graded by number, with one being the highest or best grade, all the way down to 9. This is also based on the shape and style of the leaf as well as how it is processed.
The most widely-used grading terms are the ones applied to teas produced in places like India, Sri Lanka, Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, South America and Europe. That being said, typically the higher the grade and the better the quality, the better the price.
Whole leaf tea
Whole leaf tea refers to tea that has not been broken or torn during production. So sizes and shape of the leaf varies widely, so this determines both the types of leaves used and how it is processed. As a result this will affect pricing.
SFTGFOP1 – Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe – Grade 1 – Usually the highest grade of tea for sale. Typically Darjeelings from India or teas from Assam, Nepal or other regions in that area
SFTGFOP – Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe
FTGFOP1 – Fine/Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe Grade 1
FTGFOP – Fine/Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe
TGFOP1 – Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe Grade One
TGFOP – Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe – These teas and above are usually only produced in Assam, Darjeeling, and surrounding Himalayan regions, uncommonly in Yunnan province. This grade is common in Assam and Darjeeling teas.
GFOP – Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe – This grade usually has a larger portion of the tip. This grade is common among African teas, especially Kenyan teas.
FOP – Flowery Orange Pekoe
OP – Orange Pekoe – This is the most common grade of black tea. So it is considered a “medium” grade tea and if you find “Orange Pekoe” on a teabags, they are usually broken, fannings, and or dust.
OPA – Orange Pekoe A, A long-leaf tea most common in Ceylon black tea, and typically sold in Russian and Middle Eastern cultures.
FP – Flowery Pekoe
P – Pekoe
S – Souchong
Broken-leaf tea
 Broken-leaf means the tea has been torn or broken into recognizable sizes.
BOP1 – Broken Orange Pekoe One
GFBOP – Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe
TGFBOP – Tippy Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe
TGFBOP1 – Tippy Golden Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe Grade One
BS – Broken Souchong
BPS – Broken Pekoe Souchong
GBOP – Golden Broken Orange Pekoe FBOP – Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe
BOP – Broken Orange Pekoe – A standard grade of broken-leaf tea
 Fannings
These are finely-broken pieces of the leaf that still have a recognizable coarse texture. As a result, Fannings and Dust are typically used in most tea bags.
FBOPF – Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe
Fannings Extra Special – This is the highest grade of fannings and usually occurring in Ceylon teas.
FBOPF – Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings
TBOPF – Tippy Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings – A rarely used grade. A high grade of fannings, higher in tips, but more broken than FBOPF.
BOPF – Broken Orange Pekoe Fannings
FOF – Flowery Orange Fannings
GOF – Golden Orange Fannings
Dust
Dust is a fine powder, so it is much finer than fannings, however it is made of tea particles left over from producing higher grades. (This does not include Matchas)
OPD – Orange Pekoe Dust
BOPD – Broken Orange Pekoe Dust
BOPFD – Broken Orange Pekoe Fine Dust
FD – Fine Dust
D-A – Dust A
Spl. D – Special Dust
GD – Golden Dust
OD – Orthodox Dust
Size, quality and positioning are also important when plucking aleaf or bud from the plant. Therefore if we were to start at the very tip, then this is the type of tea that we would want to process:
Tip – Flowery Orange Pekoe Second Leaf – Orange Pekoe Third Leaf – Pekoe Fourth Leaf – Pekoe Souchong Fifth Leaf – Souchong Sixth Leaf – Congou Seventh Leaf – Bohea
This is taken from a Chinese sliding scale and Souchong, Congou, and Bohea are generally Chinese black teas.
So typically older and larger leaves have a more distinguished taste. Whereas, your much younger leaves are very delicate and floral. Most importantly this gives you the ability to create a multitude of taste.
New Post has been published on http://yaroreviews.info/2021/07/chip-shortage-has-spawned-a-surplus-of-fraudsters-and-fake-parts
Chip Shortage Has Spawned a Surplus of Fraudsters and Fake Parts
Businesses in need of chips are taking supply-chain risks they wouldn’t have considered before, only to find that what they buy doesn’t work. Dubious sellers are buying ads on search engines to lure desperate buyers. Sales of X-ray machines that can detect fake parts have boomed.
It is a quality-control crisis created by the world’s scramble to land hard-to-find semiconductors at any cost. Without those essential parts, makers of products as varied as home appliances and work trucks are stuck in neutral as the global economy ticks back to life.
This spring, New York-based BotFactory Inc., a maker of 3-D printers that produce electronic parts, couldn’t source microchips at any of its go-to vendors for weeks. Eventually, it turned to an unknown seller on AliExpress, an online sales platform operated by China-based Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. An early sign of trouble: The orders arrived packed in plastic wrap rather than the usual protective antistatic bags.
X-ray machines, in higher demand this year during the chip shortage, can reveal if the inside of a chip is empty—like the second one from the right—or has inconsistent circuitry.
Photo: Creative Electron
“Of course, a bunch of them didn’t work,” said Andrew Ippoliti, BotFactory’s lead software engineer.
Mr. Ippoliti suspects the defective parts were fakes. Before making the purchase, BotFactory had been assured the microchips were legitimate, he said—but the seller went silent after the products failed to work. BotFactory filed a dispute with AliExpress, which issued a full refund.
The company finally procured some 200 microchips by ordering direct from the manufacturer.
At ERAI Inc., which maintains records of misbehavior in the electronics supply chain, new complaints arrive almost every day, said Kristal Snider, vice president at the industry watchdog. Buyers from more than 40 countries have filed reports of wire fraud, she added.
The transgressors are generally opportunistic criminals. They lure victims through targeted ads on search engines, direct them to boastful webpages and then disappear after receiving wire payment. ERAI has flagged dozens of high-risk websites, many based in Hong Kong.
The chip shortage has dented car makers world-wide, with Ford Motor Co. saying last month it would cut output across more than a half-dozen U.S. factories in July.
Photo: Rebecca cook/Reuters
One flagged firm is Blueschip Co., which calls itself one of the world’s “largest and fastest-growing” electronics-components distributors. ERAI said the company’s website shares similarities with those of known bad actors—including some guarantees that use the same wording.
Blueschip, in a written response to The Wall Street Journal, said it couldn’t be bothered to respond to ERAI’s claims. “The innocent know their innocence,” the Hong Kong-based company said.
“The number of websites we see popping up offering hard-to-find, allocated and obsolete parts is alarming,” said ERAI’s Ms. Snider in an email. “After 27 years of investigating and reporting fraud in this industry, it takes a lot to alarm me.”
Instances of chip fraud have historically been underreported, industry participants and experts say, because victims are reluctant to publicly admit that they have been duped. Pursuing criminal charges is difficult, particularly across borders.
For counterfeiters and shady distributors, the possibility of getting caught isn’t great enough to alter their behavior, said Diganta Das, a researcher at the University of Maryland who studies counterfeit electronics. There are so few convictions, Mr. Das said he could recite them all if he tried.
Counterfeit chips existed before the current shortage. The knockoffs range from sophisticated copies to old parts refurbished to look new. Many buyers have improved testing capabilities, lowering the odds that errant parts could end up in finished products, chip experts said, though counterfeiting techniques constantly evolve.
Most companies encounter counterfeit parts about three times a year, estimates Michael Ford, a senior director at Horsham, Pa.-based Aegis Software Corp., who has worked on industry standards for the quality and tracking of electronic parts. In nearly every case, the fake parts go unreported, he added.
“The whole supply chain does not want to appear as though it’s compromised,” Mr. Ford said.
Given the chaos of this year’s shortage, some buyers are tightening their antifraud measures. The Independent Distributors of Electronics Association said orders for its 250-page manual on identifying suspect parts are coming in at twice last year’s pace. Some buyers are companies that had obtained faulty or suspicious components, said Faiza Khan, the group’s executive director.
At U.K.-based distributor Princeps Electronics Ltd., requests for the most expensive and sophisticated electrical testing have nearly quadrupled this year, said Ian Walker, operations director. Those require a specialized engineer, he said, and in some cases mean a customer is paying tens of thousands of dollars to confirm the authenticity of a $3 chip.
“It is a very difficult thing to totally remove the risk of counterfeit parts in an efficient and cheap way,” Mr. Walker said.
Sales of Creative Electron Inc.’s fraud-spotting X-ray machines, which cost up to $90,000 and can detect whether the inside of a chip is empty or has inconsistent circuitry, have doubled over the past year, according to Bill Cardoso, chief executive of the San Marcos, Calif.-based company.
Astute Electronics Inc., an electronic components distributor, plans soon to buy its fifth X-ray machine for in-house inspection, said Dane Reynolds, vice president of operations. It began the year with two.
As client requests have surged, the firm is analyzing more components, Mr. Reynolds said. “As a result, we are finding more bad parts.”
Significant COVID-19 Impact on Sugar | Food and Beverage Industry | Data Bridge Market Research
Tumblr media
COVID-19 Impact on Sugar in the Food and Beverage Industry
The sugar industry plays an important role in maintaining the economy of the country is also facing several challenges in the course of its journey. Recently, the threat which is posed by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is impacting sugar sector stakeholders badly. Due to this, the integrated industries all over the world are also facing multiple challenges such as production, transportation among others.
The entire value chain in the sugar sector from sugarcane, sugar, molasses, ethanol, and their subsequent marketing and export has been adversely affected due to the pandemic.
The industry is also facing reduced off-take from associated industries such as beverage and other FMCG companies due to the lockdown. The industries are shut to control the spread of coronavirus, due to which the demand for the sugar declined, and hence sugar sector is declining in generating revenue.
Mainly two of the country which produces sugar and dominating worldwide and also helping socio-economic development of the nation are now facing bigger challenges in this industry. They are Brazil and India in which India accounts for around 15.0 to 25% of the sugar and sugarcane production all over the world. Now, with the pandemic and lockdown, the consumption has fallen as people are made to stay at home and also shutdown in foodservice sectors such as bakeries, hotels, restaurants, and cafes reducing the demand for the sugar.
For instance, according to an article published by Sugar Asia magazine, it is expected that the consumption of sugar could fall to 25 million tons as against 26 million tons which were expected previously.
They have also said that it was found that in the first six months of sugar season from October 2019–March 2020 sugar production has decreased by 22.0% from the last year.
Table 1: Decreasing growth in the sugar production in first six months of sugar season.
The operations for the sugar production were running up to the 3rd month of 2020. Further, it has been noticed that the production started getting affected so far in April on account of labor shortages due to COVID-19 breakout. Due to lack in value and supply chain, some other inputs which are need in sugar products such as Sulphur, lime, bags & other packing material were also not available or were less available due to disruptions in transportation.
Apart from production, the demand from the associated industries has also got reduced. The associated industries are a bakery, confectionery, and beverages among others. For instance, sugar supplies to the beverages manufacturers are greatly decreased as they have put off operations in bottling plants during the summertime when demand for such beverages is high.
Along with these, the food sector such as retail, hotel, and catering which are also larger consumers of sugar has reduced the demand of sugar by national lockdown as all hotels, restaurants, bars, sweetmeat shops, and other miscellaneous food establishments have been closed.
The international sugar prices have fallen by approximately 23.0% between January and April in the year 2020 as large supplier-nations such as Brazil, are switching from ethanol to sugar due to slack global oil demand and low crude oil prices. Thus, exports from India are likely to remain flattish compared with a 25-30% growth expected earlier. For instance, the drop in the export price of white sugar from USD 425 per tonne in February 2020 to USD 355/tonne at present time has resulted in declination in the market value of the sugar industry
FAO has also given its estimates that global sugar prices fallen by 19.1% in March 2020 from February 2020 due to lower demand in the coronavirus outbreak.
In the crisis, sugar industry is facing multiple challenges from the production to trade due to which market value of industry is getting impacted in recent time. But in future, once the vaccine or medicine is made available in market against coronavirus and the spread of COVID-19 is under control, sugar industry will takes its position as of previous years. Again the demand will increase from food industries and food service sector and there will be increase in the value of the sugar market in future.
SUGAR MANUFACTURERS: PERSPECTIVE & INITIATIVES
The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought world to a halt where each and every industry has got an impact of it. This crisis has brought to an unexpected situation through which everyone is going on. With such unscrupulous situation, everyone is trying to get over of it. In all, one of the cannabis related product industry which has fallen badly due to Covid-19 in start of 2020. But rising support from several companies as well as governments are helping the industry to rebuild the position again in market.
The halt in the production of the sugar have led various food and beverages manufacturers to reduce and halt their production due to the shortage of sugar. For instance,
"Will temporarily cease operations due to a lack of raw materials." Production of sugar-based beverages has halted but non-sugar drinks like Diet Coke would continue.”
- Company. Coca-Cola
“Sugar companies in Brazil may face losses if prices continue to trade at 10 cents to 11 cents a pound.”
- Joamir Alves, CEO Grupo Virgolino de Oliveira SA
The government has taken initiatives to reduce the sugar consumption as it their consumption in soft drinks is one of the major causes of obesity, for instance,
“The Soft Drinks Industry Levy has been successful in reducing sugar intakes sugar via reformulation, and in raising much needed revenue for children’s services,” it said. “The current sugar levy sugar thresholds should be reduced, the rates increased, and it should be immediately applied to a calorie threshold in sugar sweetened milk and milk-alternative drinks.”
- Katharine Jenner - campaign director of Action on Sugar and Action
"The food industry is feeding us heavily discounted and promoted processed food and drink, full of salt, fat and sugar, giving us little feeling of satiation, which greatly increases our calorie intake. Millions of families face poverty sugar and food insecurity and are unable to access a nutritionally adequate diet.”
- Graham MacGregor from Queen Mary University on Sugar and Action
High demand of the ethanol due to their utilization in sanitizer production and high demand of the sanitizers have led government to push up the production of sugar.
For instance,
“The situation at present is such that even a mandatory 5 per cent blending of ethanol with petrol, as committed by the government to protect the environment three years ago, would be difficult to meet as a result of a short supply of sugarcane. With an expected fall in the cane output, the 20 per cent ethanol blending, which the government is planning to make mandatory, is unlikely to be practical,”
- Deepak Desai, the chief consultant of ethanolindia.net
“India should implement a more “ambitious” biofuel program that will help its sugar mills to increase production of ethanol and “balance the world sugar market”
- Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association/ UNICA.
“Retailers are seeing a surge in demand while foodservice customers and themselves with more product than they need,” he said. “We are doing everything possible to connect customers together to move the extra product to where it’s needed most, while adapting our manufacturing plants to create a more agile supply system.”
- Mike Wagner, managing director of Cargill North America
“China represents more than 70% of the stevia leaves grown globally and is, therefore, a key supply base for stevia sweeteners, “Sweet Green Fields was among the rest factories approved by the Chinese government to re-open post-COVID-19 and is currently producing and supplying customers.”
- Shasha Yu, marketing director, Sweet Green Fields
“People tend to consider aspartame as a commodity but [we] turned it into a new ingredient that traveled by plane,” The air shipments are extreme – it was really at the very start of the crisis when people woke up and found out they would be out of product – but it shows you how crucial the role of aspartame in food is. I turned it into a joke, saying that our aspartame is traveling VIP.”
- Youssef Hamayet Elmili, global sales director at HSWT
CONCLUSION
The threat posed by the growing pandemic novel coronavirus (COVID-19), has been the most recent once and it is impacting sugar industry stakeholders and its integrated industries, all over the world. Brazil and India are the top producers of sugar across the globe, each producing nearly 25% and 15% of global sugar and sugarcane, respectively. The development of COVID-19 will have a direct effect on the production and consumption of the sugar industry in the short term.
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has been putting pressure on the sugar consumption patterns, complemented with a reduced off-take from beverage and other FMCG companies amid the lockdown across multiple countries. As the beverage and sweetener sector is the bulk consumer of sugar, it is likely to adversely affect the consumption owing to the precautionary measures of avoiding social gatherings.
These developments and a drop in crude oil prices have caused a ripple effect on international sugar prices. The globe has witnessed a sharp drop in sugar price, wherein in March 2020, the global prices fell steeply by 22%.
Owing to the petroleum crisis, Brazil has planned to increase their sugar production, to offset the decline in sugarcane consumption from the ethanol industry. This is further expected to affect the prices of sugar in the international market. Further, due to COVID-19, temporary disruptions in the supply chain have been experienced by the millers.
Owing to the pandemic, there have been major shifts in consumer preferences, with the increasing awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Consumers have started substituting conventional ingredients with healthier alternatives. This would also affect the sugar industry. With “no-added-sugar” and “high protein, low carbs” diet trend among consumers, the demand for sugar was already offset in the past, while this trend is expected to be boosted in the coming years. Hence the future of the sugar industry is expected to witness steady demand, majorly from the beverage industry in the coming years, even after the COVID-19 phase.
