NBN FTTdp: A Few Things You Need to Know
The phrase FTTdp or Fiber to the Distribution Point has been mentioned frequently in the last few years. It is also referred to as ‘Fiber to the Curb/Kerb’ or FTTC/FTTK.
It can be described as a hybrid of FTTP or Fibre-to-the-Premise as well as FTTN or Fibre-to-the-Node. Instead of taking fibre to a central node in a neighborhood, it is laid directly to a property’s kerb & the final connection from the kerb to your home is generally made with the existing copper phone line.
Not only does this enable faster download speeds as well as better performance, but it also, make it cheaper for you to get a direct fibre connection to your home or business.
Tumblr media
Who will be getting FTTdp?
Presently about 700,000 premises will be connected to the NBN or National Broadband Network using FTTdp technology.
It is mainly being used as a replacement for Optus’ HFC or Hybrid-Fibre Coaxial cable network. According to the NBN, FTTdp will mainly be deployed in areas where the use of Optus’ HFC cable network was planned.
Last year Fairfax had published leaked NBN documents. The documents revealed internal concerns about the quality of Optus’ HFC cable network, describing it as “not fully fit for purpose”. The NBN documents also suggested that some equipment had almost reached the end of its life & would need replacement, & that network was congested because of over-subscription.
How fast will be FTTdp connections?
Initially, FTTdp connections will enable NBN download speeds of about 100Mbps. However, speeds of up to 1Gbps will be possible, making FTTdp connections far more future proof, when it is combined with G.fast technology.
What exactly is G.fast technology?
G. fast technology is a new technology for carrying faster broadband signals over existing copper wires. The G.fast standard apparently allows the NBN to get more mileage out of old copper.
It was designed for copper lines that are shorter than 250 meters. Hence, it is ideal for FTTdp technology. However, it wouldn’t provide much of a speed benefit to a FTTN deployment.
How much will FTTdp connection cost?
Like rest of the NBN deployment, NBN will be covering the cost of your initial connection. Once your premise is connected to the NBN, you will have to sign-up with an NBN reseller.  Pricing will be typically the same regardless of the technology type a business or home is connected with when it comes to fixed-line NBN connections. In most of cases, you will need to pay a little extra every month in order to get a faster connection.
In case, you are not taking up a 24-month contract, most telcos will be charging you an additional setup fee which is generally around the $100 mark.

NetComm Launches New Industrial IoT Router to Support Medium Bandwidth Applications
This post was originally published on this site
In addition, the use of widely used LTE Category 1 technology in the NTC-220 will also provide near ubiquitous network coverage which will enable greater IIoT deployment.
The medium bandwidth capability provided by the NTC-220 enables machines to send data over the network faster while also still ensuring an optimized battery life, thereby increasing the performance lifetime of the product.
The fast-increasing number of applications being deployed in the IIoT space means a greater number of connectivity requirements for end-users — therefore requiring a greater range of devices to be available.
To meet that need the addition of the NTC-220 to the NetComm IIoT portfolio means that NetComm is now offering IIoT solutions covering low-bandwidth NB-IoT applications, over LTE Category-1, right through to higher bandwidth applications that need the extra capability of LTE Category-6.
The NTC-220’s Linux based NetComm operating system (OS) also allows solution architects and system integrators to create their own applications using NetComm’s Software Development Kit (SDK) whilst built-in GPS enables the NTC-220 to track on-the-move assets from anywhere.
Els Baert, Director of Marketing & Communications at NetComm said:
“NetComm is very proud to expand our IIoT product range with the launch of the NTC-220 that will deliver best-in-class reliable connectivity and offers an additional medium bandwidth tier to support a wide variety of applications.
“Companies around the world are really starting to wake up to the significant productivity gains made possible by embracing IIoT applications with Gartner forecasting that the global IIoT market will be worth US$123 billion by 2021.
“With our long, well established record in the IIoT area of delivering high-quality products the NTC-220 will enable connectivity right across this fast-growing sector from vending machines to security cameras to agriculture sensors and so much more.”

Fiber Networks are Getting an Upgrade with Intel’s New 10G PON Chipset
In our last post, we talked about the growing pains that service providers are feeling these days as consumers connect more devices and perform more bandwidth-intensive activities in the home. 10G PON offers a path to alleviate those challenges. It can be deployed on top of existing GPON fiber networks and makes it possible to implement a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) strategy that is scalable and cost-effective and drives subscriber retention.
In any 10G PON fiber strategy, there are two key implementations to consider: small form-factor pluggable optical network termination (SFP+ ONU) and single family unit (SFU) ONU. Both are key in the upcoming rollout of 10G PON networks and 5G.
10G PON SFU ONUs are important since they are used in many mainstream FTTH deployments as the fiber termination point in a home that connects to the home network gateway via Ethernet. In addition, 10G PON FTTH infrastructures can be leveraged for 5G deployments to connect small cells for backhaul. Also, 5G will require many more small cells and base stations deeper in the network and 10G PON is a cost-effective way to backhaul the intense data traffic that is expected. This allows service providers to use one infrastructure for both fiber and 5G to maximize the value of their investments.
SFP+ ONU plays a crucial role in fiber deployments by providing entire ONU (Mac and PHY) connectivity between the 10G PON optical network and any unit it is plugged into. Such units may be residential gateways, MDUs, DPUs, mobile small cells and base-station equipment.
Gateways offer another valuable application for SFP+ as requalification is not required, the gateway life cycle is extended, and multiple WAN options can be enabled for service upgrades. Plus, the operator’s supplier matrix is simplified, especially in the first phase of fiber rollout when migrating the existing customer base to the new technology.
Intel introduces new 10G PON chipset
To address the opportunity in SFP+ ONU and SFU ONU, Intel is expanding our PON portfolio and introducing the newest high-speed, multimode 10G PON chipset. In fact, if you happen to be attending this year’s Broadband World Forum (BBWF) in Berlin October 23-25, we invite you to check it out in person.
Our new 10G PON chipset offers a low-power, small-footprint design that can be used in a wide range of implementations in both residential and business environments, including SFU, SFP+ ONU, fiber to the distribution point (FTTdp)/multi-dwelling unit (MDU), and 5G base stations. The chipset allows service providers to reuse their existing fiber infrastructure to support today’s network upgrades. The real game changer for this chipset is the embedded 2.5 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) PHY. The integration of 2.5 GbE enables low-power, cost-effective SFUs, providing fast speeds both into and throughout the home.
Here are a few other notable features of the chipset:
It can be used in both ITU and IEEE PON environments. (Think EPON, 10G-EPON, GPON, XG-PON1, XGS-PON, NG-PON2 and active optical Ethernet.)
It is prepared for bidirectional optical subassemblies (BOSA), allowing cost-effective BOSA on board (BoB) ONU designs.
It supports network timing synchronization protocols, such as IEEE 1588v2, synchronous Ethernet or time of day (ToD), providing clock accuracy for 5G/LTE mobile base stations.
It offers embedded VoIP supporting FXS voice ports.
It delivers the necessary quality of service (QoS) and power management, carrier-grade features and hardware OAM, including Y1731, with the highest accuracy.
It includes a dual-core, multithread processor and dedicated packet processing engine so you get both service application flexibility and benchmark performance.
Creating new service—and revenue—opportunities
As greater speed and performance and lower latency are enabled in the home, service providers will be in a perfect position to create a whole new world of possible services. And with those services they will be able to create differentiating user experiences that both delight customers and grow revenue. Join us in Berlin at BBWF and see solutions based on Intel’s new 10G PON with AVM, Cambridge Industries Group (CIG), and Source Photonics.

NetComm Wireless And Ericsson Demonstrate Next-Generation nbn(TM) Fixed Wireless
SYDNEY, April 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- NetComm Wireless Limited (ASX: NTC), nbn and Ericsson have completed a series of live LTE Fixed Wireless trials that displayed the potential upgrade path to 1 gigabit per second (1 Gbps) broadband speeds for regional Australian homes and businesses on the nbn™ Fixed Wireless network.
The joint trials are the first to demonstrate a range of superfast 1 Gbps broadband speed tiers that were successfully delivered on a Fixed Wireless network. The trial reached a maximum speed of 1 Gbps downstream; and in separate device trials achieved 400/55 Mbps, 250/50 Mbps and 100/40 Mbps speeds. These results displayed the next potential steps for nbn™ Fixed Wireless which will be delivered to the regional market as a fully managed nbn 100 Fixed Wireless commercial product in 2018 using Ericsson network technology and the latest generation of Wireless Network Termination Devices (WNTDs) engineered by NetComm Wireless.
The nbn™ Fixed Wireless network differs from a mobile network in that it establishes a direct connection between the WNTD at the premises and Ericsson infrastructure to enhance capacity and provide a consistent level of broadband speed and performance, even in peak data demand periods.
The nbn™ Fixed Wireless network has the capacity to support the future digital demands of regional Australia using Ericsson infrastructure, NetComm Wireless' WNTDs and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 LTE modems to optimise transmission bandwidth and the quality of experience for end users as demand for higher speed services continues to grow.
"The nbn™ Fixed Wireless network developed from a starting position of 12Mbps download all the way to 50Mbps today. Potential speeds of 1Gbps for our rural and regional customers is beyond what would have been imagined five years ago. It is something that truly breaks down the digital divide between Australia's spread out regional areas and city areas, and it is pleasing to see what the hard work has yielded for Fixed Wireless," said Roy Brown, Head of Wireless, nbn.
"nbn has demonstrated record broadband speeds using Fixed Wireless devices engineered by NetComm Wireless, and will launch its 100Mbps Fixed Wireless product as early as next year. This is a fantastic outcome for regional Australia and we are pleased to continue the advancement of nbn's world-leading Fixed Wireless network in partnership with Ericsson," said Ken Sheridan, CEO, NetComm Wireless.
"Today we demonstrated Gigabit LTE broadband using nbn's TDD spectrum to deliver increased data rates to Fixed Wireless subscribers. Rural and regional premises will benefit from the known performance that comes from edge network devices specially engineered to extend the network's trusted zone and deliver a dependable RF link path between the base station and our device - so nothing is left to chance," said Steve Collins, Chief Technology Officer, NetComm Wireless.
nbn™ Fixed Wireless delivers specific capacity to premises in precise coverage areas, and certainty in broadband performance is achieved with Ericsson network technology and NetComm Wireless' WNTDs to ensure guaranteed throughput, committed bandwidth, network-grade diagnostics, quality of service and durability in harsh environmental conditions.
Specifically engineered to maximize cell performance and increase spectral efficiency, NetComm Wireless' WNTD integrates a high gain directional panel antenna using advanced MIMO technology. The devices feature advanced carrier aggregation capabilities for increased overall transmission bandwidth and network capacity. The NetComm Wireless Indoor Unit is designed to power the WNTD over Ethernet and deliver a high-speed broadband connection to the premises.
