despite this blog primarily fitting into the mcu timeline ( more or less ) , i am also happy to do things set in something inspired by 616 or avac ( may avac rest in peace ) .

Germany plans to offer free rapid COVID tests | DW | 16.02.2021

People in Germany will soon be able to get rapid antigen tests free of charge, Health Minister Jens Spahn announced on Tuesday.

The German government is pushing to extend its national testing capacity as the country looks for paths to roll back lockdown restrictions and re-open businesses and schools.

What are the rapid test plans?

Starting on March 1, testing centers and pharmacies will offer rapid tests for free, Spahn said.

“There are enough of them on the market by now,” the minister said on Twitter.

In an interview with German media group RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), Spahn said the federal government plans to cover the costs for the tests.

What is the status on at-home tests?

Tests that can be conducted at home are expected to be approved by regulators “soon,” Spahn said.

Once the greenlight is given, the tests should be “available for everyone,” he said on Twitter.

“These testing options can contribute to a safe everyday life, especially in schools and daycares,” he said.

Spahn also said the government is in negotiations with manufacturers to keep the costs for at-home tests low.

How have things worked until now?

Until now, most people in Germany would have to purchase quick tests from testing centers.

The government has also approved their regular use in nursing homes and hospitals. In the event of a rise in cases, the tests can also be used in schools.

The new plans would expand their use and make them more accessible. The costs for rapid tests generally range between €30 to €60 ($36 to $73), although some centers offer them for less.

Antigen rapid tests do not need to be sent to a laboratory, but their results are not as exact as PCR swab tests.

The Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases currently recommends that a swab test be done in the event a rapid test comes back positive for COVID-19.

How is Germany faring with the pandemic?

The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Germany has been slowly falling in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, the RKI report Germany’s national seven-day incidence rate at 59 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government set a new benchmark for re-opening the economy — targeting an infection rate of under 35 new cases per 100,000 people.

Concerns about the spread of new and more infectious coronavirus variants in Germany led the government to extend the country’s lockdown until early March.

Coronavirus digest: Australian bushfire forces residents to flee amid lockdown | DW | 02.02.2021

Residents in areas east of the Australian city of Perth were forced to leave their homes during a coronavirus-induced lockdown on Tuesday due to a massive wildfire.

The fire encompassed nearly 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres) of land, with a 60-kilometer (37-mile) perimeter near the town of Wooroloo. Areas impacted include the shires of Mundaring, Chittering, Northam, and the city of Swan.

“We are just waiting for confirmation of the numbers but we’re looking somewhere in the vicinity of 30-plus homes lost,” Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. 

Residents were forced to flee, except in areas where it became too dangerous to leave their homes.

“I could smell the fire and went out the back and the whole yard was filled with smoke,” said Melissa Stahl, 49, who received a text message telling her to evacuate. “We grabbed bedding, photos, the two kids and the dog and got out of there,” she added.

Roads out of some Perth suburbs were lined with cars as people attempted to leave, amid confusion about where to go during a COVID-19 lockdown.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown.

The United States will not conduct immigration enforcement arrests at vaccination sites across the country, the Department of Homeland Security has announced. The sites have been deemed “sensitive locations” that will not be targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents except under “extraordinary circumstances.”

The statement is aimed at encouraging everyone, “regardless of immigration status,” to get vaccinated when they find themselves eligible. In the past, health care facilities and churches were among some sensitive locations where arrests would not be carried out.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex has announced that the country has no plans to reopen ski lifts in winter resorts, at least for all of February.

“The hygiene situation does not allow the reopening of the ski lifts in our ski resorts,” Castex tweeted after meeting representatives from the industry. No date was given for a planned reopening.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany has increased by 6,114 and 861 people have died in the past 24 hours, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases.

The former head of the Berlin International Film Festival, Dieter Kosslick, said he had high hopes that cinemas would make a comeback after the pandemic.

“Many people notice things that they had previously forgotten about. Whether that is cooking or culture,” said Kosslick, speaking ahead of the release of his memoirs in Germany.

Kosslick, who was the director of the Berlinale festival from 2001 until 2019, said people’s appreciation of culture had increased during the pandemic.

Japan is seeking to extend its state of emergency across 10 prefectures until March 7, according to Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura. He said that while the situation was improving, Japan’s medical system was still under considerable pressure.

China has reported its lowest new infections in a month with 30 cases reported in the mainland, down from 42 a day earlier, according to official figures. Of these, 18 cases originated overseas, higher than the number of locally transmitted cases for the first time in about a month.

Coronavirus: Germany warns against travel amid spread of new variant | DW | 14.01.2021

People in Germany must refrain from nonessential travel, the head of the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases (RKI) said on Thursday, after the country detected cases of new coronavirus variants.

“We will have more variations…Therefore don’t travel,” RKI President Lothar Wieler said.

Germany has reported 16 cases of the coronavirus variant that was first detected in Britain, and four other cases of the variant from South Africa.

The RKI said these would not be the last new COVID-19 variants, as a new variation appeared in Brazil.

All infections of the new COVID-19 variants in Germany have been related to travel, Wieler said.

Germany reported on Thursday a record high of 1,244 deaths and 25,164 new infections in 24 hours.

‘Under control’ at end of 2021

The RKI urged people to follow the current lockdown rules in Germany, to control the spread of coronavirus. The institution also expressed support for further restrictions.

“At the end of the year, we will have this pandemic under control,” Wieler said, urging people to receive the vaccine.

Germany will have enough vaccines for its entire population by the end of 2021, according to the RKI.  

The RKI also encouraged people to work from home and maintain social distancing to curb the spike in COVID-19 cases. 

“Now working from home protects the health of all of us – for this we need even more responsible employers,” Wieler said.

Coronavirus currently patients occupy 85% of intensive care units, causing congestion in hospitals in 10 of Germany’s 16 states, he added. 

Germany has shut down non-essential businesses and institutions since November and until the end of January at the earliest. 

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to meet with top officials and the 16 state premiers later in January to discuss the situation. 

The country aims to curb the number of daily COVID-19 infections to less than 50 cases in every 100,000 per week, to track infection chains. The current rate is 151.2 according to the RKI.
