The Medarda arc of s2 struggled to be good, because the plot viciously smothered it. You can argue that Arcane was never about politics but you cannot say the Medardas were never explicitly a family defined by politics. So when the show shifted it's priorities from a drama steeped in political conflict where even though the setting was fantastical the stakes were grounded to a shift where magic is the end all be all threat to humanity, the Medardas are rendered largely irrelevant.
In s2 Mel's agency over her own story is both largely stripped from her and poorly communicated. Arcane has Mel abducted from the plot to be the Black Rose's captive. Even when Mel manages to free herself it's not through the traits the audience understands are her strengths, her cunning and social intelligence, it's through an innate instinct that natural to her and indecipherable to the audience.
Ambessa as a character is more or less a villain of convenience, which would be fine if she wasn't immediately following Silco's act. Once Mel is removed from the story Ambessa is largely disconnected from any emotional tension fuels conflict between the characters and previously drove the plot in s1. She's there to play the worse bad guy for Caitlyn and then give Viktor the man power for the Glorious Evolution.
It's frustrating to see the Medardas used the way they are in s2 because when they're together I can see how it could be good. When they're together Mel forces emotion out of Ambessa. In Act 1, Ambessa proved she could do circles around Piltover's court, which could actually put Mel in a tight spot.
Their final scene on paper sounds like a good idea where the true resolution to Mel and Ambessa's story was that Ambessa saw Mel's own ruthless behavior as she not only betrayed Ambessa to the Black Rose, but used her as BAIT to double cross LeBlanc. Ambessa died proud that her daughter killed her the way she did, and that's so cool and tragic, but the execution was a flop.
One, their final fight is completely unimportant to the actual Glorious Evolution, Mel's grief can't even be a highlight because it's interrupted by Viktor's mind trap. Two, their fight didn't rely on any of Mel's actual strengths, just magic and the poorly explained MacGuffin LeBlanc gave her. How did Mel even know it would do that?
It's like the writers had the bones for a great story for the Medardas, but then they're like the world's worst archeologists and fit those bones together in the worst way possible because they were convinced the bones made a stegasaurus instead of a T-rex or something.
#the black rose also doesn't really do anything except kidnap Mel#they know there's an end of the world level problem but they just sit on it for no real reason#arcane critical#mel medarda#ambessa medarda#s2's priorities are mostly incompatible with the kind of characters the medardas were set up as in s1#and frankly didn't want to engage with what made them special#personally i think it's connected to how the showrunners were suprised at Silco's popularity bcuz the stuff that makes silco interesting#is the same stuff that makes mel and ambessa interesting#which is what makes it worse bcuz the blueprint was there for the medardas to shine in s2#but the plot literally ran away from them so they're both largely devices in other people's stories mel less so#you could edit mel out of the last episode and nothing would change in the end#that's how irrelevant she was to the story#actually you could do that to ambessa too they're just there to pad out the numbers to include noxian soldiers#why did mel need to be stuck in the occulorum for the black rose arc to function#they could have easily had more agents in piltover like they did with amara#and they try to ingratiate themselves with her as ambessa further alienates her o#position of power in piltover and mel doesn’t know who to trust except herself and accepts that her methods were always#as ruthless as her mother's wothout any direct bloodshed#or something like that I'm just spitballing#did anyone else notice mel and ambessa didn’t get a songle song durong the show#no blood sweat and tears doesn’t count bcuz it wasn't in the actual show#compare Ambessa's death to Silco's or even Cassandra's who had more weight and time given to it?#it's just above Heimerdinger's own “death”#that's how relevant the Medardas are to this story they're heimerdinger level

FAMILY TITLES AMONG THE HILL TRIBES
(ft. various linguistic notes and tangents)
In-universe Brakul’s self-given title of ‘Red-Dog’ is Brakul 'ne-Dainh' in his native language (Bict-Urbinnas dialect of the Highland language group) and Brakul 'Chin-Reyla' in Wardi. Ne-Dainh/Chin-Reyla is not something he treats as or considers an actual surname or identity, just a self-styled nickname. He already has a title.
Family names/surnames are not a native practice among the Hill Tribes (though some clans or individual families have adopted this practice), and all traditionally use titles that designate immediate ancestry, clan and tribe. These full titles are officially given when one comes of age and are spoken aloud in ceremony (with the entire direct male and female lines listed by name, with most traditions expecting 12 generations of each being named).
The function is to cement one’s sense of place in the world, and their place in a direct ancestral line, which puts the person under the full watch and guidance of their ancestors. It's also a critical method of recording lineage- the long held practice of each person memorizing at least 24 total direct ancestors allows for very long, largely accurate records of family history to be kept, with some people able to trace their ancestry all the way back to initial settlement of the Highlands (or even beyond).
Brakul’s full title is:
“Brakul virsum Kuligan et Borunil an Briyonis ne-Taig an Bict-Urbinnas”
Which dead literally translates to “Brakul son of Kuligan and Borunil of the Foothills (of) Red-Cattle, of the North (Urbin/Erubin) River Valley” but has a much richer meaning in the original language.
"BRAKUL VIRSUM KULIGAN ET BORUNIL"
The actual meaning here is closer to ‘Brakul, son of Kuligan and his father’s fathers, and Borunil and her mother’s mothers’.
“Virsum” means ‘child (son/daughter) of’ (the gender is contextual), but implies the person’s status as a descendant of a full male and female line of ancestors. A different word is used if you’re just saying ‘I’m so and so’s son”. The title describes him as a son of his father Kuligan and of Kuligan’s male line, and of his mother Borunil and Borunil's female line.
All ancestors (within this particular system of kinship, divided into one direct male line from the father and one direct female line from the mother, and not including husbands from the female line or wives from the male line) are invoked and credited with the word ‘virsum’. Speaking it as part of the personal title is part of the routine and necessary honoring of one’s ancestors, who watch over their descendants from the afterlife and can temporarily return to the land to guide and protect (and sometimes punish, or teach sharp lessons to) the living.
"AN BRIYONIS NE-TAIG"
The actual meaning here would be understood as ‘clan/people of the foothills where cattle are lit red by the setting sun'.
‘Briyonis’ is the word for ‘foothill’, citing his clan’s specific location being the foothills that form the slopes of the north Urbin river valley. He is of a lesser clan within the powerful North Urbin River tribe. His clan benefits from close affiliation to their more powerful ruling clans located directly in the river valley, which grants them access to a greater variety of cultivated foods, but their actual position in the foothills still renders them predominantly reliant on cattle for subsistence. Clan names referencing cattle or horses are very common, given their frequent centrality to life.
The ‘ne-Taig’ literally means ‘red cattle’, but the ‘ne’ color word for red specifically invokes shades of red seen in and cast by a rising/setting sun. This red cast is culturally regarded as a unique beauty and evocative (and part of the name) of the solar god Hraighne. The foothills his clan is physically located on are a vantage point from which the western horizon is not fully obscured by mountains, and they experience very striking sunsets and are directly touched by the light. This is fairly unique to this location, and is invoked in the clan name and identity. ‘Ne-Taig’ here suggests a visual of grazing cattle illuminated red by the sun as it crosses the horizon.
‘Ne-Dainh’ carries the same implication, a dog illuminated red by setting sunlight. The Wardi language does not have a comparable word for a sunlit red and ‘Chin-Reyla’ really does just mean ‘(orangeish) red dog’ (‘reyla’ is specific to orangey-red colors, which is the closest match he could get. There’s no way to impart the meaning of ‘sunlit-red dog’ in Wardi that is non-clunky enough to be appropriate for a name).
"AN BICT-URBINNAS"
‘an Bict-Urbinnas’ is fairly simple, Bict means ‘north’, and 'Urbin' is the name of the specific river that stems from a northern and eastern tributary. This river has a very ancient name (or a derivative of one) that predates settlement by the Hill Tribes, and its exact meaning is lost.
The root -(n)nas designates a river valley, but has strong implications of being an esteemed and bountiful place, rather than solely a literal geographical descriptor (as the river valleys are centers of power and trade in the highlands). It may be a loanword from the Wardi language family, as its usage is VERY similar in form and function to the Wardi -(n)nos, which also suggests a place of esteem and bounty (more specifically having connotations of a kingdom).
’An’ literally means ‘of’, but in the specific sense of describing the place and identity of a collection of people. ‘an Bict Urbinnas’ would be understood in speech as ‘of the north Urbin River Valley (people)’. The clans historically settled in and around the valley of the North Urbin River form the totality of the Bict-Urbinnas tribe.
The ‘Urbin’ word predates the contemporary Wardi name ‘Erubin’ for the river, the latter of which invokes the semi-mythological founding figure Erub, who himself was of a Wardi tribe located downriver to the south of the Highlands. The real historically extant ‘Erub’ was most likely named Urub after the river, with his cited name shifting over the centuries in folklore, and the Wardi name for the river shifting with it.
‘Erubin’ as a corruption of ‘Urbin’ functions very well in Wardi language due to ‘-bi/bin’ denoting something as a ‘gift’, usually in a more metaphorical sense. ‘Erubin’ is understood as meaning ‘(The river that is) Erub’s gift’, and the Erubin/Urbin river is a key tributary to the much larger Black river, one of the key rivers that feeds the region's wetter and more fertile west. This 'gift' meaning also occurs in the name of the southeastern Imperial Wardi city-state Erubinnos, which is understood as meaning ’((The kingdom that is) Erub’s gift’. He is considered to have conquered and taken the land (from the core city's actual founders, the Wogan people) and established a kingdom there in the early days of warring Wardi tribal monarchies.
#Just dropping this randomly because it's a pretty complete lore dump in my notes app#Family names are a big fucking deal in the Wardi cultural sphere and not having one is associated with being a bastard or otherwise#displaced or unwanted. If pressed Brakul either fully lies and says 'ne-Dainh' (which will just come off as 'oh it's some foreign name')#Or lists his actual title (not a family name but equally important). Sometimes listing all 24 generations if he's particularly annoyed.#It's only strictly necessary to memorize 12 ancestors in each line but it's considered good practice to be able#to cite associated non-direct ancestor husbands/wives/siblings/etc. That's where the tattoos as a mnemonic device comes in#It's easy to memorize 24 ancestors but very difficult to memorize 24 ancestors and at least some of their family members#And remembering and honoring the dead by name is of great importance- both puts you under the protection of more#ancestors (including non-direct ones) and ensures the dead's status in the afterlife is secure (it's believed that fully forgotten#dead leave the celestial fields and can no longer directly intercede with the living- though with some additional nuances to what#constitutes being fully forgotten)#Venerating and remembering the dead is a huge focus of cultural practice and additional methods are used to safeguard#ancestors (and other honored dead without descendants) whose names have been forgotten. There's one yearly holiday focused entirely on#the nameless dead where they are invoked and honored via little straw dolls that are burnt in bonfires high in the mountains so the#smoke is sent up to the Fields. It takes weeks of preparation and tens (maybe hundreds idk I'm bad with scale) of thousands of#dolls will be made each year across the Highlands for this purpose. Honoring them with effigy even without name is usually#considered enough to safeguard their afterlife for at least another year.#Also yeah kinship systems among the Hill Tribes (and very similarly among the Finns) follow a male line/female line system#Only father's father's fathers (...) and mother's mother's mothers (...) are considered direct ancestors (though all four grandparents#are sometimes honored as ancestors even if only two are considered DIRECT ancestral kin- this tradition varies)#Inheritance systems are somewhat matrilineal given that a wife is considered the owner and arbiter of property and a husband is#its protector and active manager. If a man and woman from different clans (or tribes) marry any children will be considered to be of#the clan/tribe of whichever spouse does NOT relocate in marriage.#Whether the husband moves in with the wife or the wife moves in with the husband is dependent on an arbitration process#and the husband (and his family) being able to provide a bride price (which is somewhat of a payment for the land/property#the wife's mother will be passing down to the new husband's management should he move in- and displays his ability to care#for and provide valued assets. A man who can provide a bride price tends to receive greater respect)#This is most commonly going to be livestock (and almost ubiquitously includes a single cattle to be butchered for the wedding feast)#But can include other valuables or assets like land or grain/seeds or etc. There is no intra-Highlands monetary system and the internal#economy is built on trade. I’ve just seen someone post a status earnestly being like “whew thank god, SO happy to see there are armed security in front of my local Target store now! finally all those nasty thieves can be dealt with! <3” with nothing but complete agreement in the comments, plus people wishing anyone who shoplifts gets shot like "hopefully they're actually allowed to use their guns LOL! ;)" and that getting positive likes and reactions... ??? The whole attitude of "Oh noooo! :( Not someone taking like $40 of stuff from target! :( This is definitely not part of a larger systemic problem and could clearly all be solved if only I were just able to watch them be violently assaulted, which I am REALLY looking forward to because I am very normal and healthy :) God I wish so desperately that I could watch a poor person get gunned down in front of me, I dream everyday about seeing other human beings maimed!! Haven't seen the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie and don't intend to, frankly, but good to see we're already at the renewed rise/resurgence of the "Wolverine is the most deadly/unkillable of the X-Men" trope that his plot prominence insists on trying to pretend is a thing in every adaptation.
Like I get annoyed by Dick Grayson fanon from people who don't read the comics, but for all that Bobby Drake is my favorite Marvel character, its very funny when Logan stans assume the obvious dynamic between them is that Bobby shrieks and fearfully apologizes for whatever joke he just made whenever Logan just pops his claws menacingly in his direction.
Its like fhalshfklahklhflakhfalfhla see what's funny about this take is Bobby actually finds it hilarious when he does that in the comics because it just means Logan has forgotten that he is talking to the man with the LEAST reason to be afraid of him, like ever.
Bobby could just stand there with an eyebrow raised while Logan carves him into ice cubes and then just.....conjure an entirely new undamaged body in the air right next to him and be like "Are you done now, is it over, did you get it all out of your system? Like what was that supposed to accomplish. What was the goal here." He doesn't even have to be in ice form when the hacking and slashing starts, its all the same to him. He views physicality as like. A guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.
THIS is what the actual power dynamic is between Bobby and Logan and its why non comic book readers' default insistence on picking Bobby OF ALL PEOPLE to be the fall guy/punchline of choice used to show how bad-ass Logan is and to mine for humorous instances of intimdiation is just. Very silly, actually.
Bobby making a skyscraper sized version of himself and just casually squishing Logan with a toe is literal comic book canon. Your presumed rules of 'apex machismo equates to peak power and competence' do not apply here.
The unkillable gay god-tier twink with a pathological aversion to taking anything seriously is lapping him every single time. And Logan knows it too, lol. Its why Bobby is canonically right near the top of his wishlist of allies/teammates to turn to for back-up when he's fighting outside his weight-class. Ororo, Jean and Bobby, those are his top three choices, without fail. When Jean's dead and Ororo's busy elsewhere, Bobby is the one Logan's turning to next, to do the stuff he knows he can't get done himself.
#and no this was not during a power-up storyline no matter how often ppl try to claim that#its explicitly clarified that Bobby's inhibitions were altered by the Plot Device of that story but everything he did in it#was stuff he'd already done in stories before that and in stories since. like this is just him. he regularly goes Galactus size to fight#dragons or turn into Voltron to scrap hand to hand with Sentinels or to punch a giant Eternal space minotaur god off his island with one hi#i love that of all the endless options he always has available to him in any given situation....without fail he can always be counted on to#select the Most Extra and go pikachu I choose you!

I'm not really any manner of orator, and I average out at the amount of knowledge that passes my feed. I just... you know, recognize that. the US authorities and the bulk of celebrities who played into it to keep their job did those same things to us in the 60s and 70s. it's the same playbook, it's the same colonialism, it's the same human toll.

i think im just gonna give up on adult fantasy written by men
#said in the world-weary tone of like. an exhausted guy slumping into a barstool and asking for the strongest beer#has there ever been an adult fantasy novel written by a man that was... good?#oh im completely spitting on the face of tolkein arent i#maybe i'll try rereading lotr this year and see if he at least writes his two (2) women characters with any grace#the thing is i dont even really mind an occasional story devoid of femininity#im just so tired of stories devoid of femininity being hailed and praise for virtues that im.... not actually seeing in the work#meanwhile literally any woman writes a fantasy novel and it gets shelved as YA and criticized for being fluff and nonserious#anyway i skipped through the entire second half of Name of the Wind just to read the framing device scenes#given that i did read the entire first half i dont know that i want to shelve this as a DNF and miss getting 'credit' for it on goodreads?

I was always bad at math (I was supposed to be tested for dyscalculia when I was 12 but it kinda just never happened) but I severely underestimated just how much worse I could get now that I'm on enough pain meds that it could actually literally kill someone if they started taking it without titrating up properly

god, sometimes i really wanna know what goes on in enoch's head while 2-3 is happening
like. you concoct this very detailed plan for about a year. it's absurd because it involves the lead coroner of scotland yard herself and a piece of history that no one would think to connect because it's a tenuous link not even most of the public know. but it's because the concept is absurd, and the trust the public have in the coroner itself is great that they wouldn't think she'd purposefully fabricate an autopsy report (ignoring the fabrication in klint's autopsy since that is COMPLETELY out of public knowledge at the time). and to top it off, it perfectly lays the blame on the person you're constructing the machine for, without you being considered since the 'culprit' would've been obvious.
and then this japanese law student just goes into court, with the sheer determination of defending said person's innocence no matter the cost, just fucking unravels it all, even down to the very detail of every reasoning behind every action that you'd thought no one would get. like, seriously, if he wasn't correct, he would've sounded absolutely fucking crazy! but he is correct on every point, thus tearing apart your plan that you've devised for an entire year.
no wonder enoch exponentially got pissed as the trial went on, like. case 2-3 is fucking batshit INSANE the longer you think about it

I’m an au enthusiast (if you can’t tell), so I wanna know the deets. What kind of robot? is this similar to something like Detroit turning human or something else? Does Robot Egon imply he was ALWAYS a robot or just was put into a robot? Is he a ghost possessing a machine? I must know.
I feel stupid for not realizing you're an AU enthusiast but oh my god I'm so happy to be able to ramble about this!!! I did answer another ask about how this AU effects the storyline of Ghostbusters if you wanna give that a read first! It'll help to give an understanding for the plot c: But to answer your question, Robot Egon is pretty humanoid but he's not highly advanced humanoid like the Androids in Detroit: Become Human. His actual body (which is sorta designed like a mannequin doll) is made of the strongest metals the robotics company had at the time of the incident. His human skin is made up of rubber to cover up his metal body (which yes can be burnt off and its a bit of a scary sight), his hair is soft colored metal but scrunching it in your hand is akin to squeezing a metal sponge, and his blood mostly consists of oil and coolant. During the 'Awakening' period as a robot as Egon calls it, he took the time to study his body and what he was capable of now that he was beyond human flesh and bones. After a few days of studying his strengths and limits, the idea of experimenting and mechanically rearranging or upgrading parts of his body became known. With the help of Ray (much to slight discomfort of performing a live mechanical vivisection on his close friend), Egon managed to build himself into a living proton pack and ghost trap. The palms of his hands become neutrona wands, while his chest can suck up ghosts and hold them temporarily till they needed to be emptied. Oh, and he also upgraded his eyes to become PKE scanners. So if you see the sight of green light shining up and down, chances are it's Egon looking for the ghost with his eyes.

Trying to listen to music with non paid Spotify and YouTube and no CDs of what i want to listen to is more like. Well. I'd LIKE to listen to some fucking music, but I'm in ads and malfunctioning app hell instead
#text post#ive given up and let Spotify shuffle the album that has the song i do want to hear on it#maybe I'll fucking get to actually listen to it before Housemate gets home#more likely not since Spotify keeps getting stuck in the mobile app and will literally just play ads#like i had it on while washing dishes earlier and it got stuck to the point the same long ad kept playing over and over#no music in between them just the same ad#and i had to turn it off bc jfc what the entire fuck and also i was gonna stab myself if i had to hear the ad one more time lmao#even if i did have the CDs i don't have any device that has a working cd player so like.#im fine im very mad abt access to art and media and what it's become and im seething but it's fine
