(Except maybe strangling him with his own scarf. That’s pretty weird. Don’t do that.)

1964 - That time a violent revolution in Zanzibar caused Freddie’s family to flee the country.

1970 - That time Freddie’s idol, Jimi Hendrix, tragically passed away. Roger and Freddie closed their stall early. Later at rehearsals, Queen played Hendrix songs as a tribute.

mid-1970s - That time Ratty and Freddie almost died in a car crash, but things turned out unexpectedly hilarious.

1982 - That time Bill Reid was a dangerous, abusive, violent drunk during the Hot Space US tour and Freddie’s bodyguard went on to tell the tale. 

1985 - That time Freddie would not stop calling Jim in the wee hours of the morning. 

1991 - That time Freddie prepared letters/gifts for those he would leave behind. (Was Elton’s gift the only one?)

In his hotel room in New York City, Freddie Mercury answers a phone call. He's quite sure it is a wrong number, but he might be the only one who can help the boy on the other end of the line.

A lump formed in his throat. Once the radio announced someone's death, it was as if it made it real. It was no longer a rumour, a bad joke or a state of floating between uncertainty and reality. Taking refuge in oblivion or the hope of a mistake wasn’t an option anymore.

Hello everyone! I'm one week late 😂 but Happy Freddie Weekend! ❤ I got unexpectedly inspired for this story by the prompt "1970 - That time Freddie’s idol, Jimi Hendrix, tragically passed away. Roger and Freddie closed their stall early. Later at rehearsals, Queen played Hendrix songs as a tribute." I also wanted to mix it with the prompt "Heartbreak" in it.

While thinking about the death of an idol through Freddie's eyes, it got me to think about my own relationship with Queen, and… well, about things we'd rather not focus on when we think about persons we admire and appreciate. Thank you very much @a-froger-epic and @freddie-mercury-rising for organising this event! 🥰

Notes: Happy Pride y’all! This year I’m celebrating with a thorough appreciation of Freddie in the Leather community, starting with this fic which was written for Freddie Mercury Weekend 2022.

The Mineshaft was a gay leather and sex club in NYC that Freddie was a member of (and in fact, the shirt Freddie wears in the “Don’t Stop Me Now” music video has the Mineshaft logo on it). Specific inspiration for this fic came from this photo of the Mineshaft dress code and this (SFW) Tom of Finland drawing.
