Finally, after months of work, I have completed it: the collection of all* character appearances in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood!
edit: if you want a more detailed spreadsheet on the homunculi in particular, @vuullets has a collection of all homunculi appearances in the manga! you can find it here
Some notes on this spreadsheet:
there are spoilers. obviously. proceed with caution
timestamps indicate when a character first appears in a scene, not every time they appear. if the scene changes to one without that character, and then we return to that character in another scene, that's another timestamp for a new appearance
all timestamps are approximate, give or take a few seconds based on how quickly I could pause the show
only unique flashbacks count as an appearance. if the flashback is to something we've seen in a previous episode, that is not counted as a unique appearance, but if it provides something new that we haven't seen before, it counts!
I didn't include background easter egg appearances, like when you can see Mei in the background at a train station before she's introduced
I didn't actually do all characters. there are a lot of characters, and I am just one person. sorry if you're a big fan of minor members of the military, i just couldn't do it
since Greed is kind of a special case, he deserves a specific explanation: OG Greed and Greedling are not counted as separate characters, they're both just Greed. when Greed is in control of Ling's body, that counts as an appearance for Greed, and it's not an appearance for Ling unless he's in control. if they're both in a scene together (talking in the mindscape, for example, or switching control back and forth) they each get a timestamp for when they first appear/speak in a scene
feel free to use this as a reference! I made this as a useful tool for myself, and because I'm a nerd about data. if you are also a nerd about data, I tallied up some stats, which I'll put under the cut:
only six characters broke 30 episodes. the characters with the most appearances are Edward (60), Alphonse (58), Mustang (45), Hawkeye (42), Scar (40), and Winry (31).
next highest on the list are Alex Armstrong and Mei (tied for 29), King Bradley (28), Hohenheim (26), and Ling (25).
the homunculus in the most episodes is Wrath (28), and the one in the least is Lust (11)
as previously mentioned, Alex Armstrong and Mei are in the same number of episodes (29), as are Olivier Armstrong and Marcoh (24), and Buccaneer and Ross (18)
Hughes is in only 10 episodes, the same number as Grumman and Fu
Yoki is in a whopping 23 episodes. what the fuck
the chimera in the most episodes is Zampano (21), closely followed by Darius and Jerso (20), with Heinkel falling behind at 16. The Devil's Nest chimeras are only in 2 episodes, with the exception of Bido, who is in 3

Note
5, & 9 for Winry, 18 & 20 for Mei, 6 & 10 for Maria, and 23 & 7 for Hughes, please?
Sure!!!
Winry:
5. What’s the first song that comes to mind when you think of them?
Maybe “Simple and Clean” by Hikaru Utada? It is kind of considered THE Kingdom Hearts song, but I feel like it suits Winry pretty well.
See also, though it’s barely 2 days old: “The Alchemy” by Taylor Swift
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
Probably! We have very dissimilar interests, but I don’t think we’d annoy each other—and I also keep pretty odd hours, so her pulling all-nighters working on automail probably wouldn’t bother me too much 😂
Mei:
18. A relationship that they have in canon with another character that you admire?
Look, it’s probably the least fleshed out of all the ships in FMA, but she and Al are just so CUTE in concept, okay?? Like, she keeps building up this image of this chivalric hero in shining armor for herself, and then Al shows up and is quite literally a suit of armor??? 😂😂 In all seriousness, they’re very cute, and I think they have a lot of potential. What really sold me on it was Al nearly dying to shield her from the giant blast in the penultimate episode, of course. It also cracks me up that they’re already way better at talking about their feelings than Ed and Winry despite being younger 😂
20. What other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screen time they share doesn’t matter?
Hmmmm….I mean, though we don’t actually see them interact with each other much, we can infer that she and Winry must have become friends due to later circumstances 😂. They aren’t all that alike, but I feel like they could come to get along very well.
Maria:
6. What’s something you have in common with this character?
Probably getting really hung up over moral dilemmas.
10. Could you be best friends with this character?
I think so—I don’t feel like I know her as well as some of the other characters, but I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t get along.
Hughes:
7. What’s something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
I’m not too familiar with the fandom takes on him yet, but from what I’ve seen thus far, I love how we all understand that he is an incredible dad friend, and how integral he is to the entire plot of FMAB. Without him, Amestris would not have been saved.
23. Favorite picture of this character?
More of a moment than a picture, but this makes me crack up every time:

Happy FMA day! Fullmetal Alchemist and my great love of it was a huge inspiration in making my YouTube channel. FMA is still the topic I have the most videos on and I’m grateful for how it inspired me. So here is a collection of all the FMA videos I made. I added a summary of what they’re all about and the length. I make my videos sort of like tv episodes with segments and I also like to talk about my process. The videos are intended to be enjoyable even if you don’t know much about the topic. I’m trying to improve my thumbnails and titles so that makes it more obvious LOL.
Needlefelting Gluttony
youtube
This was my first ever video! It’s very different from my current ones because of that. It’s mostly me talking about FMA over progress of felting and I talk a little about what needle felting is.
18 minutes
Lust nendoroid Doll
youtube
This is my most viewed video. I make a nendoroid doll of Lust and talk about making customs with premade parts. Includes skits about Pride, Gluttony, & Envy getting ready for Lust to arrive.
17 minutes
King Bradley Figure Review
youtube
Review of Megahouse’s King Bradley figure. Has skits with the Pride, Envy, & Lust. I did this review in cosplay because why not.
18 minutes
King Bradley Figure Comparison
youtube
Comparing the Megahouse King Bradley scale figure with Goodsmile Company’s budget figure. In this one I talk about how much I like the Bradley family.
14 minutes
Painting Selim Bradley anime badge
youtube
In this one, I repaint a can badge of Norman from Promised Neverland into Pride. I talk about repurposing merch for characters who don’t get much made.
14 minutes
Selim Bradley Dollfie Dream
youtube
My long and treacherous journey of making a Dollfie Dream of Selim Bradley. Includes info about Dollfie Dreams and what they are, my history with these dolls, a little about Pride and what made me want to make a doll of him, and my first time doing faceups on dolls and making my own custom. This video needs an update so the faceup stuff isn’t my best work anymore but hey!
1 hour and 9 minutes
Selim Bradley Cosplay
youtube
The longest video I’ve ever made. Is about how this very simple costume took me 2 years to complete. I talk about FMA, the character and why I like him, and my many nitpicky attempts at this cosplay. Is a bit more about my state of mind and what the cosplay came to represent than the craftsmanship of it. There’s a photo shoot at the end too where I talk about my process.
1 hour 25 minutes

Do you ever think about how Bender was so depressed and lonely that he was going to kill himself, and then he immediately changed his mind when Fry called him his friend? Because I think about this all the time, especially that they had this exchange the first time they met. Fry saved Bender’s life and he doesn’t know it because he’s a good person.
Fry was the first person to treat Bender like a regular human being with feelings, which is something that gets dismissed by quite a few characters throughout the show. No wonder Fry is the only human that's on Bender’s “don’t kill” list (at first, I’m certain it gets longer later). Bender may be a complete asshole, but deep down, he just wants to be loved. And Fry was the one to give him that.

I always try to think about the worst things Bender did during Futurama, which is hard because his moral compass is insane. This guy goes from pick-pocketing people to enslaving an entire planet to stroke his ego, inCLUDING FRY AND LEELA, WHO LOVE HIM SO MUCH—
And then Bender throws Fry’s fossilized puppy into lava because he wanted Fry to only love him. He flushes Nibbler down the toilet because he got more attention than Bender for maybe a single day. And the crazy thing is that he doesn’t do this out of pure malice, he does it out of jealousy because he wants the people he cares about (Fry and Leela) to be 100% focused on him.
Bender was the original gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss, and no one else could ever top his level of pettiness.

Okay one thing I really love about Fry is that before I started watching the show, I thought for sure he would be a somewhat dull everyman. And he was supposed to be the normal guy compared to all the whacky characters living in the future. But oh boy, this show really pulled a fast one with that, because Fry’s weird as hell.
He’s the type of guy who would gladly eat an egg salad sandwich he found in the men’s bathroom of a gas station. He spent $300 on 100 cups of coffee because of a throwaway comment his coworker made. He spent an entire fortune on a can of anchovies to share with his friends. When his dog licks him, HE LICKS HIS DOG BACK. And who can forget that he bedazzles his own underpants.
It’s really charming because when he comes to the future, he doesn’t care about any societal constructs. He doesn’t care that Leela’s a cyclops, to him, she’s just a badass lady who’s really pretty. And he doesn’t care that Bender’s a robot; he just wants to be friends with a robot because that’s been his dream since he was six. Fry doesn’t care that Leela and Bender are different from him, he just thinks they’re really cool and wants to be their friend.
Of course, Fry’s still relatable, but he’s also batshit insane, fitting right in with the rest of the weird cast. The show tricks you into thinking he’s normal, but he’s really not. That’s some mighty fine character building right there.

I haven't worked out just how many generations 18 years covers in the world of podcasting, but it's enough to know that it was a vastly different world in 2005.  A world without as many social media bells and whistles, one where few contemplated how artificial intelligence tools could improve their podcasting workflow or how to create episode teasers in the form of audiograms or Instagram reels.  A lot has changed, but some things remain the same.  For me, nothing matters more than the music that I share on the show.  I never wanted to do anything else in podcasting other than champion independent artists and connect the dots between various musical genres through this medium.
There's a whole lot of music that has been played on this show over 18 years, and it would be foolish to suggest to you that nine songs could cover even a fraction of that time.  However, some of these songs and artists are reminiscent of specific moments within BSOTS history.  The selections from Lovespirals and Big La Vs. Todd represent my connection to the Music Podcasting Consortium, a like-minded collective of avid music supporters and creators that represents my first online community within the podosphere.  Whether Todd Kelley (a.k.a. The Big La) is curating a music mix or in the lab crafting beats of his own, the head nod factor is always priority number one with him.  "The Shoreline" is a calming instrumental piece and one of my personal favorites from his Kneel Before Todd album.  The music of Lovespirals appeared within the first ten episodes of Radio BSOTS and is one of the first podsafe artists ever played on this show.  Their new single "Misunderstood" is a continuation of the ethereal attributes that make their work so special (and besides that, atmospheric drum and bass is the way to my heart).
Over the years, podsafe music resources faded away one by one, but thankfully the Free Music Archive is still around.  Founded in 2009, I've been virtually crate digging through this website since its beginning stages in beta mode, always finding works that have both intrigued and surprised me.  A cut like "Mango Tree" by Chandeliers brings me right back to those early days of searching for music on the FMA.  This one's a total earworm, marrying lyrics and vocals that lean towards folk with an off-kilter funk groove accentuated by the bass, keys, and rhythm guitar.  "Bag Of Nothingness" is another FMA find, where producer Comfort Fit takes the funk and launches full speed into the future,  creating a hip-hop/electronic beat hybrid that stays crunchy even in milk.
Prior to the FMA's existence, a universe of netlabels brought me in touch with an endless amount of Creative Commons licensed music.  The blocSonic netlabel would have been the first, and I try to represent for their output as often as possible.  The self-titled album by Friends Or Whatever is one of my all-time favorite blocSonic releases and the shimmering brilliance of "Everybody Stopped Calling Me" is just one of the reasons why.  No Type (no longer active) was another netlabel that I came across soon after blocSonic and I fell hard for their focus on experimental electronic music.  The introspective beauty of "The Force May Be With You" by Idmonster is reminiscent of work from labels like Project Mooncircle, the warm chords occasionally disturbed by slivers of voices, clicks, and digital static.  Upitup Records is more of a recent discovery, but the music of Cosmic Analog Ensemble has been played on this show well over a decade ago.  He's a multi-instrumentalist that's capable of creating soulful jazz numbers to sample-heavy hip-hop instrumentals that feel like Madlib during his most leftfield moments.  I cannot stop playing "In Matacumbo" and it would be criminal not to share that cut with you.  The same can be said for "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Dharma.  It's impossible to keep still when those breakbeats kick in.  Believe it or not, that cut dates back to 1999, proving that the Creative Commons crates are deep and full of amazing cuts that deserve more exposure.  (Seek and ye shall find.)  It was released on Mono211, a label that stopped releasing music 20 years ago.  Thanks to the efforts of those behind the Netlabel Archive for preserving the works of inactive imprints and ensuring that their output won't be lost forever.
And then there's Jonny Sonic, an artist that ended up becoming the unofficial voice of the BSOTS GONE (buck)WILD episodes.  His music is often punchy and insistent, never forsaking the funk in its approach.  I love the horn section on "Datenight" and how Jonny's voice just seems to cut through his big band that's right behind him.  I've been playing his music since at least 2006 and he's the first artist that I reach for whenever BSOTS needs to blow off some steam.  Should you need some music to bring you back from the brink, here's hoping that the selections within this episode can bring some semblance of peace your way.   ID drops:  Fave, Kahlief Adams, Aspektz, Jonny Sonic, Darrenkeith

I truly do not talk about the good place enough on this blog. Like you guys really don't understand. if you guys think I like a league of their own. If you guys think, I like the x files. If you guys think, I like anything at all. you have no idea how I feel about The good place
like I can't even actually put it into words. It changed me as a person fundamentally. I mean, I know we say that about a lot of stuff but just. It's different with this show. With all of the things that I've ever fallen in love with What do I do? I watch them until I cannot watch them anymore. I've seen aloto at least 60 times all the way though. Do you know how many VHS tapes I broke as a child because I would just watch my favorite movie repeatedly until literally the tape snapped inside the vcr bc I wore it down. And then I'd cry my eyes out. RIP rescuers down under. That was like a death in the family. When I was 21 my sister Snapped my DVD in half (Chitty chitty Bang bang) because I watched it literally 4 times in 1 day. And it's like a 3 hour movie, so that is a whole day of Chitty chitty Bang bang on in the living room. Yeah, she took the DVD out of the player and snapped it in half right in front of me. Whenever I find a song that I like I literally listen to It for days on repeat and I memorize the lyrics and I suck every single drop of joy I can get out of it.
And that's on autism.
But I've digressed.
the good place is literally the best thing that I've ever seen.
And so I have only watched it twice.
I found It on Netflix like right when the last episodes of the last season were airing and me and my family binged it, and then watched the final episode on the day it came out.
I've literally only rewatched it one time since then.
The show is so fucking good that I don't want to rewatch it. Because I don't want to dull the sensation of how good it is. I don't want to memorize it (i do have the cactus scene memorized from showing it to ppl). Because I want fresh eyes when I watch It again. Because I love it that much. I literally have never loved anything this much in my entire life. all my life I have been obsessed with movies and TV shows and books and music and I literally have been like agonizing ever since I turned 18 about like what tattoo I'm gonna get because I wanted all these tattoos (like AURYN from tnes, VFD eye, fma ouroborus) but I couldn't make a decision and the money and this and that and whatever to put it off and never got one but literally ✨️within 3 months of my first rewatch of the good place✨️ I went out and got a goddamn cactus tattooed on my forearm with the words "Thank you, Janet".
That's how much this show means to me. If that doesn't say it all, I don't know. I just genuinely believe it's the greatest piece of media ever made and I think it should be required reading for anyone in our society.

Finally had some time to catch up with some of the spring season anime I'm watching and... I'm losing my mind over gunjou no fanfare. Why no one talks about it??? Okay, it isn't a masterpiece, definitely has errors, but I like how character driven the whole thing is. Just those little jockey students overcoming chalanges and finding their way <3 I think it would have been better if it had more episodes to focus on the characters, but honestly I think it was good. Would recommend it.

i think this is hilarious with no context but honestly 03 is killing me dead. i have so many questions. FMA 03 spoilers below. and above, honestly. its too late for you if that was a concern
ive seen this series at least twice before and every time i get more questions. this time, its about what mustang and hohenheim have to do with each other.
because they DO know each other. for SURE. we know that. that's in the text.
we KNOW that (in 03), after trisha got sick, edward, alphonse, and pinnaco got out all the cards and letters hoho had sent them, and they sent letters to each return address in hopes of finding hohenheim and letting him know trisha was dying.
one of the return addresses was mustangs, at least in the present. the screenshot above is from the episode where he first shows up, saying he was responding to the mail he got. the name on the mail is clearly listed as "James Herlert," which first and foremost means mustang is a criminal who opens other peoples mail, which is a felony AND a shitty thing to do.
it ALSO isnt hohenheims name, even though the rockbell/elric family were clearly writing to hoho. they wouldve addressed him on the letter.
the obvious and most likely answer is that it was a mistake, the artists are likely japanese, they might not have known english, and it might've just missed quality control even if they did. writing like this is often not taken too seriously, nobody expects you to read it, its just there so your brain can fill in the details.
but, if you wanna make everything fit, the hoho in 03 steals the bodies of other people to continue his own life. its not a big stretch that he'd assume the identity of whoever he took over, and James Herlert could just be the name of the man who he's "possessing" (for lack of a better term). it'd be the body's legal name, the same name that any housing lease would have listed, and increase the chance of him getting the letter.
the thing that gets me is that it's mustangs address. and mustang knows who he is. maybe hohenheim was a prior tenant, but that'd be weird considering it seems to be military housing. mustang's only comment in this episode so far is that They (i assume the military) have been looking for hoho for a while and found nothing.
now theres another episode coming up where the two of them bump into each other and i might have more to say when i rewatch that one, but iirc, they werent outright hostile. they were like. fine. mustang didnt try to arrest him, didnt react like he was in danger, they were Fine. maybe even amiable. please note, he came to resembool because of winry, because of his guilt for killing her parents, not because of hohenheim.
03 is way looser with its timeline than brotherhood (not to disparage 03, 03 doesnt need to be good in the same ways as BH, its incredible in its own right) so its a little weird trying to figure out when they wouldve had time to meet. if we borrow some ideas from BH, mustang probably entered the military when he was around 18 and the Ishvalan genocide would follow within a couple years. that doesnt leave them a ton of time to meet or interact.
maybe, because of the age thing, they could just barely interact enough for hoho to teach mustang about alchemy? that has no evidence at all, its just one of any interaction they could have based on their vague ages and affinities. we have 0 context about mustangs life outside of the military, no comment on the family and friends he has in brotherhood and the manga, so truly it could be anything.
for all we know, hoho got picked up off the street by mustang like ed picked up ling in BH. the lack of answers is killing me. what are you two doing over there. led to the third segment, maybe mustang a hoho were friends and mustang gave him a couch to sleep on. at least mustang has a reason to be affiliated with the military living quarters. if hoho was on the run, maybe he just picked a new identity, using a new name to write his letters.
notably, in BH, mustang and hoho seem to have not met until after Ed was fuckin around in the military. we cant really transplant ideas from brotherhood in this case, simply because theres no analogous situation in brotherhood.
i have no clue what these two were doing. i can guess and joke around but i've got nothing substantial. i'd love to hear fan theories if anyones got them

“You can relax, my son. There are none among us who would sell out one of our own.”
Haha, yeah, about that... The potential new Scarf + Yoki dynamic in this show will be interesting to see grow, because May Chang is more than likely not in this adaptation. Probably.
Okay, so rewinding a little, let’s actually talk about Izumi’s baby. Hmm... Well, due to the time where Homunculi were introduced, if I take into account the location these shows split their narratives from each other, that left Pride and Sloth having the opportunity to be entirely new characters in FMA ‘03.
So if Lust was, perhaps, brought back for the sake of love, we might be able to predict that Trisha Elric / Bradley’s Secretary is Pride, because the Elric bros were so freakin’ confident in their abilities, and they could do no wrong. I’ve said that much already, earlier.
So if we look at Izumi, well... Her reasons for resurrecting her stillborn child don’t quite align with the Seven Deadly Sins. She felt intense grief and sorrow, to be sure, and nothing that would align with Sloth, the one remaining Sin left available.
But. BUT. I could see it being the case that Izumi carried a deep anger and spite in her for how life has treated her. Making her so infertile, and stealing away her first child. I could... I COULD see Izumi’s child being Wrath. Maybe. That depends entirely on what Fuhrer Bradley is in this adaptation. So far, there’s been little in terms of foreshadowing for Bradley’s identity. But the current situation with Marcoh, and the Secretary, lead me to believe he still is Wrath.
Lots of variables up in the air, I think. I’ll have to wait and see.
Freakin’ Baby Homunculus. What the fuck, dude. I mean FMAB had a little kid Homunculus, but... a baby? Seriously?
