Highlight a FFXIV blog that explores difficult or complex emotions well.

Again I follow plenty of FFXIV blogs that do this extremely well, but a particularly great example would be @pumpkinmagekupo.

Plenty of people can explore themes of anxiety or shyness in an OC - hell I even try to do that myself - but Mizuki is definitely an incredibly well-realised and three-dimensional OC, with a complex and believable emotional life. She moves between self-doubt, determination, resentment, grief and dynamism and back again. Her relationships are explored in-depth and I really enjoy the detailed exploration of themes of commucation and silence, connection and isolation.

Plus any OC who properly appreciates desserts gets my vote. So if you're not following @pumpkinmagekupo then you should be.

I decided to take a break from Twitter today. I expect others have/will too. So if you're looking for FFXIV blogs to follow here's a quick summary of what you'll find on mine. I do ask that no one under 18 (or prudes) follow since I curse, write about some heavy themes, and do the occasional mild NSFW. 😳

I usually focus on FFXIV - specifically my main OC. Wolfram is a 40yo Highlander Spellblade. He's the Warrior of Light and is shipped with Raubahn Aldynn. Here's his character Carrd. I do gposes, comics, and the occasional house design.

IRL I'm a software dev in my 30's living in the southeastern USA. She/her/they/them, bi, and gloriously neurodivergent. I'm married so no thirsty DMs please! 😂

A FFXIV Alt Rant

I know, I feel like I'm negative with my posts here if they're text-based on tumblr, but it's nice to be able to just get my thoughts out there.

I find the alt-unfriendliness super frustrating in FFXIV. Before someone comes at me with "BUT YOU CAN LEARN ALL JOBS ON ONE CHARACTER!" I don't care. I don't play the game for multiple jobs/classes. FFXIV combat system is kinda flavorless for me.

I play FFXIV for RP & housing. I used to collect (in World of Warcraft) but I don't bother to do that in FFXIV anymore because nothing is shared with alts, and a lot of it isn't market-sellable, so I can't trade it to a friend then pass it to alts either.

It just is a huge, frustrating thing as someone who really likes having multiple characters with multiple stories.

I have to go through MSQ on every single alt, or buy the skip, which is ridiculous in pricing. I don't know why skips can't apply to multiple alts, and I don't care that my spent money is 'helping the game'. It's a bit ridiculous that I'd need to be looked to to 'fund the game' with microtransactions or waste time on each and every alt to story skip.

Not getting a level skip for alts is fine, but the fact that FFXIV REQUIRES you to go through the MSQ to advance through the game is ridiculous if you have a character on that account that has already before.

I get that I'm a rare type of player, and that the XIV RP community comes across as far more casual/less story based (it's my impression from the wider community. Sorry.) than I am used to, coming from a different game. I like multiple conflicts/plotlines and complexities, and am not into the venue/bar scene.

I love this game, given I've been playing it for years now and have put a lot into it, but I have plenty of complaints like I would any other game, and it feels like bringing up ANY complaint at all, be it things like this or story-based complaints (like the utter RELIANCE on nostalgia/'need to play many previous games to get the references or enjoy this part of it') will toss fanatics who defend the game at every twist and turn and flaw no matter what at me.

I don't know.

It's just a rant, I know nothing's going to change, and I know it will likely be alt-unfriendly forever because "you can have all jobs on one character" which again - does not appeal to me in the slightest.

Eventually it may house RP and character writing, but presently, I'm still getting my footing in the FFXIV setting as a whole. A little about me: I'm 25, theoretically a ladyperson (she/her), and I've been RPing online since I could type - about 15 years now (though I'd like to think I've improved since ye olde days of the Neopets forums). My interests are random and often come in short, hyperfixated bursts, but FFXIV seems to be stuck to me. I'm also learning to 3D model one snail's-pace step at a time, and Graphic Design is my Passion™.

As for FFXIV, I'm currently playing through Heavensward and loving every second of this wonderful story. DRG is my favorite class so far, PLD is fun, and I cannot, for the life of me, understand RDM or DNC. I am doing my best.

Highlight a FFXIV blog which has challenged you to think about an aspect of lore in a different way.

There are definitely quite a few blogs that have challenged me in that regard, but one of the first and most engaging was (and is) definitely @spotofmummery.

The character of Amon in @spotofmummery manages to fit comfortably into existing lore, whilst simultaneously exploring and extending it. It took a raid boss, from a raid I trundled through without really thinking about it too much, and promptly took me on an emotional journey that explores themes of power, politics, guilt, redemption and love.

It definitely made me think more about the character of Amon, what motivated him, both in the past and now, and the legacy of the Allagan Empire. What I initially interpreted as a fairly standard "psuedo sci-fi ancient civilisation destroyed by it's own hubris" trope, actually became much more engaging and tragic. Similarly the divergent path taken by the Amon of @spotofmummery makes both the "OC" version and the canon incarnation feel deeper and more complex, with a mixture of conflicting, and even contradictory, impulses and desires.

Plus the hat is always impressive!

Some new Lore about Cam, there are voices/people in their head that are from the rejoined shards. Let me tell you about them one by one

Fran. Female Viera, Allagan Technician, 34 yrs - 3rd shard/reflection

Fran was an Allagan Technician, working on projects like the massive ship in Azyz Lla. At one point Fran had the opportunity to meet Amon (Hermes) and Solus (Emet, briefly), despite hearing warnings about the two from her colleagues. Young Solus had asked for her hand im marriage - promising a long and safe life. She told him she'd think about it. The day she went to tell him 'Yes', The 3rd Reflection rejoined to the source - Killing her instantly.

Vevera Fae Vera [Vevera Quo Vera], Female Lalafellin, Centurion of the Garlean Army/Servant of the Galvus family, 32 yrs - 6th Shard/ Reflection

Vevera was from a well off family of some public officials family line. Her mother worked as a Seamstress for the Galvus family, while her father was a Ceruleum technician with the title of 'Nan' granted to him. Vera joined the reaper camp at a young age and lived there for most of her life, training to be one of the guards of the Galvus family. Vera was seen as a threat by fellow reapers - as they had tried to kill the lalafellin multiple times throughout her time there. None had succeeded. Vera had worked for her Zenos as a servant of the family and an excellent guard. During the Rejoining of her reflection the winds and ice-as well as the endless snow storms destroyed what she knew and loved. She died protecting the Royal Family in their last moments.

Valljan Rehw-nong, Male Viera, Gunner of the people of Mhach, Healer of Eorzeans, 28 yrs - 10th Shard/ Reflection

Valljan was a viera of the people of Mhach, he was thrust forward in time during the Rejoining of the 10th shard to his version of the first shard - meeting G'raha and finding a way to return home. Unfortunately due to the Rejoining, his home was gone. Putting him and his G'raha in stasis until Camellia Thetris arrived in Eorzea. Valljan currently lives as a Sage in Gridania, healing anyone who enters his doors while his G'raha is one of the many scholars of the old wood.
