It��s funny how you can have so much, and yet be left with so little. You have the house, the cars, the luxury purchases and vacations abroad, the blissful lack of money worries, yet, where is the love? Junho believes that, in a way, his parents love him, but he can’t say he’s ever felt very loved. He’s never felt accepted for who he is, just who his parents want him to be. It’s not a unique problem, he knows that much. And who is he to complain, when he’s got almost everything he could ask for? Asking for more would just be greedy.

His parents only ever wanted one child, just to say they’d done their duty in continuing the family blood lines. But it meant all the expectations were placed on Junho’s shoulders. Get good grades, play sports, play an instrument, be involved in extracurriculars, spend time with the family, but not too much time, call the grandparents, and cousins, and put aside time for vacations, but have a steady social circle, but only be friends with smart kids, ones worthy of him. Junho never made a single decision for himself, though not for want of trying. 

Despite the pressure, and the ever present shadow of his mother hanging over his shoulder, checking up on him at every opportunity, Junho finds time to fall in love with music. Not the kind his parents want him to take interest in—the classics like Mozart and Bach—no, Junho’s captured by the shining world of kpop. He’s smart enough not to share this interest with his parents, knowing they’d never approve, but he begins to dream of one day being an idol. It’s a pipe dream really. How does a boy whose barely allowed out on his own, living in San Francisco become a singing and dancing idol in South Korea? The simple answer: you don’t. 

Junho’s not the perfect child his parents wish for though. He’s not perfect in every subject, and it doesn’t all come easy to him. He’s good at math and physics, sports and music, but in everything else he struggles, especially when it comes to his behaviour. It becomes clear quite early in Junho’s life that he’s emotional, a trait his parents quickly make their great dislike for known. He’s hot-tempered, competitive, dramatic and tearful. Quite unlike the child his parents had envisioned, had hoped he would be. 

Yet Junho pushes forward, trying to minimise the conflict in his home life by aiming to be the person his parents want him to be. He pushes his emotions down as best he can, ignores his own interests, tries his best to emulate the ideals his parents instilled in him. Yet he can feel the cracks in his persona from the moment he puts it on. Even with his extended family, the cousins he grows so close to, he can’t be himself. Like most families he knows, they’re strongly religious, and Junho finds that parts of him don’t line up with what they believe to be good. As the years pass he notices more and more how his entire family, immediate and extended, agree on what’s right, and what’s wrong, and Junho can’t help but notice just how many parts of him are wrong. 

Yet eventually, in middle school, Junho meets a few friends who voice different opinions, whose worldviews place Junho in the good category, despite all the things his family would point out as reasons he's bad. He begins to quietly accept those parts of himself, wondering if perhaps there’s another way to live life that isn’t bound so tightly by the rules his family lives by. 

But things get much worse when his family suddenly moves to Seoul. Without that friend group, and surrounded by people who all believe the same things his parents do, he’s thrust back into the world where Junho is wrong. Those few people who said the things he knew to be bad about himself were, in fact, good things, surely must’ve been wrong. So many people all agreeing on certain things can’t all be wrong. Yet Junho can’t find it in him to agree, not fully, when they’re things he can’t seem to change. 

The only good thing about being in Seoul, he realises, is that now he’s close to the entertainment company auditions. Behind his parents backs he begins to go to as many as he can, for any company he sees advertising them. Yet, time and time again, he fails. Sometimes, he reaches the final round of auditions, before losing out once again. Maybe being an idol really isn’t his calling, despite how much work he puts into it after school, during the hours his parents think he spends studying, when he’s actually attending a performing arts academy, paid for with his own money. 

Eventually, he graduates from high school, detaches himself from the friend group who spewed so much hatred about a myriad of things Junho could never seem to truly agree with, and gets into Yonsei University. It’s quite a shock to both him, and his family, as no on truly believed he had it in him to get into somewhere so prestigious. But, his grades in Math and Physics, alongside his Grade 8 piano and long list of extracurricular activities, made him stand out. 

He moves out, getting an apartment with a friend closer to campus, and begins again trying to figure out who he is apart from what his parents always pushed upon him. What does he like, dislike, wish for and care about? Deep down, he knows the answers, but years of being buried means they take a long time to unearth. Surrounded by better people from all walks of life—from different places and different backgrounds—he lets his preexisting beliefs about right and wrong, and his own sins, be questioned, challenged, and changed. 

He’s nowhere near perfect, nowhere near healed from eighteen years of living under his parents roof. They need not know about the man he’s becoming, or the things he disagrees with them on. Sometimes, you have to lose others, to gain yourself.

“ un metro ochenta de alto, mandíbula marcada y labios que muchos pagan para tener ” así es como lo describen en las notas pegadas a su nombre. deoksu, además de lo ya mencionado, tiene cabello oscuro, lacio y terco. incluso con las decoloraciones que se hizo en el pasado para tener cabello rojo, morado, rubio y hasta turquesa, este sigue siendo tan indomable como cuando nació. por la equitación tiene complexión trabajada, especialmente sus piernas. cuenta con varias perforaciones en el cuerpo, menciones honorables siendo la de su ombligo y su ceja.

descripción psicológica:

✮ deoksu salió del hospital subido en el lomo de un corcel o al menos eso es lo que él dice (no está seguro, no recuerda su nacimiento gracias a dios). los caballos han sido su animal favorito desde siempre, es posible que todo esto sea culpa de la película spirit que salió cuando él ya podía comprender, más o menos, lo que sucedía en una pantalla. de ahí, su obsesión solo creció al punto de pedir un caballo para su cumpleaños. lo cuidó tan bien que sus padres lo dejaron tener varios a lo largo de su vida y ahora compite con ellos en distintos niveles.

✮ a diferencia de su hermana, el arte no es lo suyo y jamás lo fue. desde niño sus dibujos carecían de coherencia y las manualidades lo aburrían demasiado. no tenía paciencia para nada, ni para leer, ni crear. tampoco hablaremos de los talentos musicales porque esos apenas los conoce de nombre. es una lástima porque sería increíble para su madre tener un hijo más en su compañía.
