Hello Hello, welcome to the blog!
I’m Savanna, a freelance curator (and as of mid-December a Master’s Degree holder 😎). I’ll be using this corner of the Tumblrverse to talk about curation, give exhibition updates, and answer questions if you’ve got em! Speaking of, here are some things you may be wondering:
What’s your degree in?
Everyone’s favorite subject, ✨Arts Administration✨ I’ll talk more about how we got here in a separate post but in short, Arts Administration is all of the behind the scenes work that makes the arts happen. If you’re curious, my thesis is called “Fostering Cultural Proficiency in American Exhibition Spaces.”
Wtf is a curator?
Thanks so much for asking. The short answer is curators make art exhibits happen; like wedding planners but for art shows.
How does an art show get made?
Well, each show is unique but the bones (or Exhibition Cycle) generally looks like this:
Creating a Call for Artists that tells folks what you’re looking for, who’s eligible, and any important details like dates, deadlines, fees, etc.
Managing the jury process (basically setting up and reviewing a voting system) for applications.
Finalizing acceptance decisions, sending notifications out to artists, and creating an inventory.
Managing the shipping/receiving process (and filing return labels; trust me it’s important!)
Unpacking, photographing, and filling out condition reports for every. single. piece.
Writing exhibition copy (i.e. gallery book descriptions, wall signage, display labels, press blurbs, etc.); this is also when you meet with graphic designers, marketing folks, and journalists to get things in order.
Installing the actual show (believe it or not this takes about a week!)
Attending the opening reception, meeting artists, taking photos, having fun.
Taking a breath while the show’s up (and putting out small fires; there will always be a few).
Deinstalling the show, packing up pieces (for artists or the folks who bought them), and managing shipping.
Sending thank you’s, gallery materials, certificates, etc. out to artists.
Doing it all again!
