So, apparently new F1 fans don't know there were women in the F1 sport before. No, not F2 drivers, actual F1 drivers. So I feel like I should tell you guys about the first ever F1 female driver.
This is Maria Teresa de Filippis. She was born November 11, 1926 in Naples, Italy. She died January 18, 2016.
She participated in five World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 May 1958, but scored no championship points. She was a huge step in the F1 world for women, especially in that time period. She is hugely overlooked.
In the late 1940s, at the end of World War II, de Filippis developed an interest in motorsport. Despite some disbelief from friends and family, where two of her brothers told her that she would not be able to go very fast, goading her and making a bet that she would be slow, but at the age of 22, de Filippis began her racing career. She won her first race, driving a Fiat 500 on a 10 km drive between Salerno and Cava de' Tirreni. This result gave her the confidence to compete in the Italian sports car championship, where she finished second in the 1954 season.
After her, no woman would race in F1 again for 15 years until Lella Lombardi competed between 1974 and 1976. I will be doing a post about Lella, too.

F1 WDCs historical blanket - crochet project
I finished with the 1950s so figured I would start posting the updates on this project. :)
Format
Granny square blanket, 7x10 + 5 squares (last row filled out with extra background color)
Concept
Each square is corresponding to a F1 world champion, 1950-2024. Yarn color depends on what team they won with, pattern depends on the person. Yarn colors are based on either the car color or the logo / general association, whichever works best. Pattern assignment has a mix of High Concept, helmet design, Vibes and "this is a nice pattern and I'm running out of ideas".
Yarn used
Scheepjes Softfun, I mark the color used in parentheses with every square.
First update under the cut :)
1950s
Decade concept: first decade = foundations of the sport, so to speak, so I used combinations of the basic granny square.
Giuseppe Farina - 1950
Team: Alfa Romeo (Jade)
First winner ever so I used the basic granny square.
Juan Manuel Fangio - 1951, 1954-57
Teams: Alfa Romeo (Jade), Mercedes 2x (Cool Blue), Ferrari (Candy Apple), Maserati (Mahogany)
A defining figure of the 50s and F1 in general, I chose the most imposing basic square that came to mind - super solid.
Alberto Ascari, 1952-53
Team: Ferrari (Candy Apple)
C2C is a basic square I enjoy, and it looks nice with the Ferrari red. No deeper thoughts in this.
Mike Hawthorn, 1958
Team: Ferrari (Candy Apple)
Circle is one more variation on the basic square, no further thought process behind this one.
Jack Brabham, 1959
Team: Cooper (Sky)
The pattern for Brabham was an interesting question because he won both in the 50s and the 60s, so needed a pattern that worked for basic concept of the 50s and the more varied ones of the 60s as well. I decided on the Fancy Basic square by Cherished Memories Crochet on youtube, still a variation on the basic square but with a bit more interest. It makes for a nice transitional pattern between the decades.

my favourite niche f1 driver - Leslie Thorne
He was born on June 23rd, 1916 in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. He died on July 13th, 1993 (77 y/o) in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland.
He competed in the 1954 British Grand Prix driving a Connaught the team Ecurie Ecosse where he came 14th.
He also participated in four non-championship F1 races in 1954 with the same team in the UK.
He was a chartered accountant, and also a racing enthusiast.
He began racing in hill-climb events in Scotland between 1936 and 1938.
He put his racing career on hold after WWII.
He returned to racing in the single-seater category, starting with formula 3 in 1953. He was able to get a drive with David Murray's team,Ecurie Escosse due to his friendship with David.
In 1955 he retired from racing and returned to his career as an accountant.

Formula 1 Car Naming Conventions
With F1 car launches in full force, I have been looking into why teams name their cars the way that they do. Each team has a different naming convention. Some of the naming conventions are easy to understand like RB19. Then there are the many Ferrari naming conventions (SF-23, F1-75, SF1000, etc).
So here are the current naming conventions for each team in order of car launch dates.
Haas
The 2024 Haas car is called the VF-24.
In an article for the 2016 Haas Car Launch, it was explained why they named the car the VF-16.
The first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation in 1988. It was unofficially named the VF-1, otherwise known as the Very First 1. For Formula 1, Haas kept the VF and changed the 1 for the last two digits of the year. VF-16 = 2016, VF-23 = 2023, etc.
Williams
The 2024 Williams car is called the FW46.
Every car by Williams has carried the FW prefix, with the first one being the FW06 in 1978. The FW in the name stands for the founder of the team, Sir Frank Williams. Despite the Williams family no longer being involved in the team, the current owners have kept the naming convention as a link to the storied history of Williams Racing.
If the car keeps the same chassis as the previous year, then a B is added to the end of the name to show that it is a B-Spec car (and on a few occasions there have been C-Spec cars).
Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber
The 2024 Sauber car is called the C44.
Sauber made its debut with the C12 in 1993 and has since used this naming convention except for the BMW Sauber years. But after BMW left, Sauber returned to using C and picked up the numbers where it would have been if the naming convention hadn't changed.
The C stands for Peter Sauber's wife Christiane. His first car was called the C1 and since then all Sauber cars (with the exception of the BMW Sauber cars) have used the C for Christiane.
Alpine
The 2024 Alpine car is called the A524.
Since Renault became Alpine in 2021, all of their cars have had the following naming formula: A + 5 + the last two digits of the year.
In January 2021, the team explained why the 2021 car was called the A521. The A is for Alpine. The 5 is for A500, which was a prototype for the 1975 F1 season. All of the cars since 2021, have followed this naming convention and have just changed the 21 to correspond with the current year.
Visa Cash App RB
The Visa Cash App RB 2024 car is called the VCARB 01.
There really isn't much about the team as of right now due to the rebrand changing up everything from the previous AlphaTauri stuff. However, VCARB is the acronym for the team name and this is the first car to be run under the rebrand, thus the 01.
Aston Martin
The Aston Martin 2024 car is called the AMR24.
Since 2021, Aston Martin has used the same naming convention: AMR + the last 2 digits of the current year. The AMR stands for Aston Martin Racing.
Ferrari
The 2024 Ferrari car is named the SF-24.
However, unlike the other teams, it is hard to predict what the Ferrari will be named. In recent years, there have been the F1-75, SF21, SF1000, SF90, F14-T, and 150º Italia just to list a few of the names.
For 2024, it is a simple naming convention that has been used in the past. SF = Scuderia Ferrari and then the last two digits of the year the car will be run.
RacingNews365 made a chart of every Ferrari car since 2000 and the meaning behind the name. For the most part, the formula for naming the car is either Ferrari/Scuderia Ferrari + year or important event commemoration.
Ferrari also uses the dash inconsistently which doesn't really mean anything, but is just not the most aesthetically pleasing when looking at a list of all the car names.
Mercedes
The 2024 Mercedes car is called the W15.
All Mercedes cars have had a W in the car name, even the 1954 and 1955 cars. The 2010 Mercedes car was the W01 and since then the team has continued chronologically.
The W stands for Wagen which means car in German.
McLaren
The 2024 McLaren car is called the MCL38.
The numbers have been ascending since almost the beginning with a few B-Spec cars for the most part. However, the beginning letters have changed over the years. Since 2017, McLaren has used MCL. And just as it looks, MCL is short for McLaren.
The 2023 car didn't have the chronological number due to honoring McLaren's 60 years of history.
Red Bull
The 2024 Red Bull car is named the RB 20.
Since its first year, the Red Bull cars have been given the RB designation along with a chronologically ascending number. The RB as expected stands for Red Bull.
The RB 20 marks 20 seasons of Red Bull in Formula One.

Rivals: Juan Manuel Fangio v Alberto Ascari
Hello, this is part of a series I will be doing on F1 rivalries throughout history. Enjoy!
(Fangio on the right, and Ascari on the left))
Alrighty, so the rivalry between Juan Manuel Fangio and Alberto Ascari is perhaps the earliest one in F1 history. It began as F1 was taking shape, and had a lasting impact on the sport.
To understand this rivalry you must first have a little background on the drivers. Fangio was an older driver, entering the sport at age 38, and was known for his technical skills and smooth style. he came from a typical Argentinian background and had a rather calm and mature way of existing in F1. Ascari on the other hand was younger, and had a much more fearless and aggressive style. He came from a famous racing family, and with that came the pressure to upheld a legacy.
(Fangio on the Silverstone Circuit in 1951)
The 1951 season was the beginning of this rivalry. Fangio, driving for Alfa Romeo, and Ascari, driving for Ferrari, were the top runners for the championship. The climax of this season was at the Spanish GP, when Ascari had the chance to take the title, but Alfa Romeo's superior strategy paired with Fangio's maturity led them to victory. After an intense season, Fangio won the title. This was mostly due to the lack of reliability in Ascari's car, and cemented that it wasn't just speed that made a champion.
(Ascari in 1952)
1952 saw Ascari dominate F1 after Fangio suffered a crash and broke his neck, which removed him from the majority of the season. While he did eventually return, it was too late for any championship fight and Ascari won cleanly. 1953 saw similar dominance from Ascari, but he did have to fight Fangio for it this time. Their biggest moment that years was at the British GP, where they spent the entire race swapping the lead back and forth. Ultimately, Ascari was victorious in this race.
(1954, Fangio on pole, followed by his teammate, and Ascari)
In 1954 the newly formed Mercedes team took Fangio on as a driver, and with a better car, he quickly climbed back up to the top. Meanwhile, Ascari was struggling with that year's Ferrari, and this allowed Fangio to dominate, winning six out of the nine races. This signaled to many the end of Ascari's reign as the top F1 driver.
1955 spelled a tragic end to this rivalry. While Fangio continued his winning ways, Ascari struggled. During the Monaco GP that years, he had a terrible crash, which he miraculously survived with minor injuries. This would be his last F1 race. Days later, when testing a Ferrari sports car in Monza, he tragically died. This was a massive shock to the motorsports world.
(Attendees at Ascari's funeral)
All throughout this intense rivalry, the two men shared a huge respect for one another. Both were rather soft spoken men, and while not close friends, they openly had a special camaraderie and a mutual admiration for the other. When Ascari passed away, Fangio was uniquely devastated, saying "I have lost my greatest opponent."
(Fangio and Ascari shaking hands)
They created a legacy in F1, and set the tone for how F1 would be in the years to come; a sport where technical skill, mental strength, and fierce competition creates legendary battles. From them, many other rivalries descended and they set the typical flavor most have had. Smooth vs aggressive. Old vs new. Calculated vs fearless. Fangio vs Ascari.
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into a more classic F1 rivalry.
Cheers,
-B

Macau GP 70th Anniversary
YOU. YEAH YOU READING THIS. This is me trying to pursued you to go watch the Macau GP this weekend. This track is historic and legendary. And one of the most fun and dangerous street circuits (imo) with tight corners and varying elevations. It is still the oldest (active) street circuit that still holds F3 (+other races) and isn't part of the F1 World Championship (the other being New Zealand🤝)
Since it’s the 70th anniversary and they are holding two wholeass race weekends with a BANGER entry list this year (full list at the end of the post), so why not take a trip down memory lane and talk about some iconic races and drivers throughout the years. [LONG POST, just saying][Also, surprises underneath]
Macau Grand Prix, Guia Circuit (or Circuito da Guia)—a circuit that spans 6.120km, with different elevations over 30 meters top to bottom (in non-metric terms: 2 small pine trees, or 2 volleyball courts for all non-metric people out there👍). Top speed: 260km/h for an F3 car, which is already a handful. This circuit has had little to no changes since the beginning of its grand opening. While this track serves as a stepping stone for drivers, it remains an independent circuit and race of its own. Though still having an affiliate with the FIA.
Although the first race event began in 1954, they didn’t introduce F3 until 1983. Which they had a strong start for F3 with the likes of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, respectively taking first and third place.
youtube
A few years later; Eddie Irvine, Damon Hill, Jean Alesi also left their marks on this race track.
But the most iconic moment came in 1990. The battle of Schumacher vs Hakkinen. The beginning of their motor rivalry.
youtube
Schumi took first place while Mika unfortunately crashed out at the back of Schumi’s car.
Jenson Button (a literal child) in 1999, second place. God works hard but those mechanics work even harder
youtube
In 2003-2004, both Lewis and Nico took part, whilst Lewis took pole and they both showed great results in qualifying. Neither of them went on to podium in both years.
2005: baby Seb starting to shine through and took third at the main race, just behind Kubica
youtube
They put a baby in a fast car
2009: Daniel, Valtteri, and Jules took the challenge. Jules started near the back end of the grid but was steady racing and finished 10th. Valtteri started 4th, had the opportunity to be on podium until he got a puncture on the last lap that saw him finish fifth. Daniel-not the best start- clipped the wall and punctured his left rear, carried on a little bit more until he crashed out of the race :( can’t find any video cuz apparently no one cared enough about 2009
2011: Valtteri’s third year in a row; the previous got him third place but this one he retired the car on lap 4 due to an accident. Kmag, da Costa, Carlos participated but all in all, half the grid retired in the end.
youtube
Pre-mustache Bottas and baby redbull Carlos
Bloop! 2014: a wild baby Max appears! Boy had good results in qualifying, placing him third, but in the quali race he lost control and crashed. Main race-7th. Nick Cassidy, Nicki Latifi, Antonio Giovinazzi, Alex Palou finished 3rd, 5th, 12th and 16th. Unfortunately, Antonio Fuoco and Estie Bestie retired :(
youtube
Yes, Max did get the fastest lap
2015: Everybody’s favourite! Charles Leclerc has entered the ring. Charlie’s aggressive attack led him to second place and on that podium. Giovinazzi-4th, Lance Stroll-8th, Nick Cassidy-12th and following close behind, my boy, Alexander Albon-13th
youtube
The race was that good even FIA had to post it on their channel lol
youtube
The infamous onboard camera
2016: we see the introduction of George Russell, Landon Norris, Callum Ilott, Guanyu Zhou and Ticktum (But we’re not gonna talk about him🤭). It was an okay race, António Félix da Costa took first (came 9th in the recent WEC👏) and Nikita crashed.
That year gave us baby Lando and baby George who took his first pole *surprise🎉*
2017: A fucking great racing year, Lando came second due to Habsburg and Sette Câmara crashing out in the final corner. It’s Mick’s first year, though not the best result but did manage to snatch the fastest lap 💨
youtube
2018: it was a scary ass race and I remember standing in front of the TV just watching this. Lisboa corner is famously know for a lot of accidents, Sophia Flörsch made contact with another that send her airborne and crashed into the barriers and fractured her vertebrae. Final standing: Mick-5th, Ilott-7th, Schwartzman-9th, Zhou-11th, Vesti-15th
I’m not gonna post the video, you can go look it up if you’re interested

3 years of absence and we are back! 2023!
This year there’s two whole weekends, from 11-12th November and 16-19th November. And they’ve a banger list of drivers like Bianca Bustamante for F4 and Richard Verschoor taking another stab at it.
Macau F4 race is happening on the 11-12th:
F4 is happening the week after on 16-19th
The FIA is streaming F3 on the YouTube channel (streaming f3 not f4🥲…go watch motor gp too it’s on the same day) but you could probably watch it on other streaming platforms too (you know the ones👀👀)
If you haven’t seen the Macau GP before…give it a go! It’s brilliant!
*side note: if Fernando or Lewis ever retires from f1 and have nothing else to do…I’d like to see them tackle this track (again for Lewis) maybe not f3, maybe something like GT cup or something. It would be verrrry interesting👀
#ok I wrote this on and off and in between my essays so I do apologize if words don’t make sense cuz I’m running on redbull and no sleep#and I technically theoretically wrote this selfishly cuz it’s my home turf and I wanna show some love#charles leclerc#sebastian vettel#max verstappen#lando norris#carlos sainz jr#alex albon#daniel ricciardo#lewis hamilton#george russell#ayrton senna#michael schumacher#mika häkkinen#bianca bustamante#f1#formula 1#f2#f3#f1 academy#macau grand prix#macau gp

Forever associated with five-time Formula 1 World Champion, Juan Manuel Fangio, the Maserati 250F is the quintessential front-engined Grand Prix car. Designed principally by Gioacchino Colombo and Valerio Colotti, and introduced for the 1954 season, the 250F was constructed around a tubular ladder-frame chassis, with independent front suspension and a De Dion rear axle, and was powered by a 2½-litre double-overhead-camshaft straight-six engine.
Fangio secured two Grand Prix victories with the 250F before leaving for Mercedes-Benz, ending the '54 season as Formula 1 World Champion for the second time. Having secured a further two F1 World Championships, Fangio was back behind the wheel of a 250F, by this time further developed by Giulio Alfieri, for the 1957 season. Fangio drove to four more World Championship victories that year, including his legendary win at the Nürburgring where he overcame a 48-second deficit following a botched pit stop, passing race leader Mike Hawthorn on the penultimate lap. In doing so he broke the lap record ten times. Fangio's final win, this performance at the wheel of a Maserati 250F is often regarded as the greatest drive in Formula 1 history.
The late Sir Stirling Moss, who achieved his first Formula 1 victory at the wheel of a 250F when he won the non-Championship Oulton Park International Gold Cup in 1954, described the Maserati as "the most beautiful Formula 1 car in the world", an assessment few would disagree with.
