"Interstellar adventurer? Like..Going to space?" Mikey looked Night over, seated right next to him. "I don´t think he´s been to space."

Donnie looked disturbed and tensed as Night rose himself to sit. THIS was a bigger more scarier Raph than the one they already had, or so he assumed at first. To his surprise however, the "clone" didnt toss anything at his face or yell at him.

He still felt his pulse raise a little too high to his liking, and the watch on his wrist gave three sharp beeps, notifying him about his high pulse.

"UH oh. The dork alarm.."

Donnie took a deep breath in, and then out through his nose. "I have this thanks to you, Raph!! He hissed, before calming down, and began to speak softer.

"Okay.. So.... do you have any proof that he is who he say he is? Any ID? "

"its Raph!! He can't get an ID. His ID is his face. "

"Not good enough."

"He's got… a cool, heroic, skin-tight bodysuit on?"

Donnie canted his head, one eyeridge raised, analysing the "clone" and his gear.

"Villains wear black leather. Darth Vader. Rorchach. Sebastian Shaw and the scarecrow, cat woman.. They all wear black leather."

Mikey had to nod in agreement at that, giving Night a look. "You kinda do look like a villain."

"That's not nice, you guys… but look, I'm sorry. I promise you, it's okay. We brought him here because Dad said so." He added extra weight to his last words—after all, in this house, their father's decisions were always final.

"What? This was Dad's idea?"

"And Dad is very wise. You trust him, right?" Leo fixed a knowing gaze on his stressed-out brother.

"He's an old man, Leo," Donnie whispered angrily. "He's confused most of the time. He doesn't know the ipad, his phone—and he gets our names mixed up! He forgets his glasses on his head and leaves his phone in the fridge. He describes the internet in plural and he probably got Raph and… this other Raph mixed up!"

"Dooooonnie... Maybe you're just being gruuuumpy.." Mikey said, melodically, and sent Night a bright smile.

"Please shut up." Raph pleaded to no avail. Nobody seemed to care.

"Okaaaay.. look." Leo paused for effect, and smiled. "Why don't you and I go talk to dad, and then, I make some more pancakes. It's okay. Calm down. Everything is fine." Leo gave Mikey the plate of pancakes, then put his hand around the shoulders of his grumpy brother, guiding him out of the room.

"i really hate you right now."

"i know..." Leo replied with a tone of deep understanding, and apologetically smiled back at the others, mouthing out. "Gonna make more pancakes." And winked.

Mikey in the meanwhile, offered their guest to share Night´s pancakes with him. "He´s gonna make more pancakes. Hungry? MM They're good! I can tell you're Raph by the way. And don't worry about Donnie, he's always moody before breakfast. It´s not personal. He´s like this all the time."

TO SAY THAT Night was a heavy sleeper would be...a massive understatement, to say the least. Of course, when one was raised in a sewer underneath New York alongside three other brothers, it was to be expected. That being said, however, Night and Cleo both operated on a pretty strict ( see: synchronized ) sleep schedule, with Cleo usually waking up pretty early on to get household chores done, and Night would usually wind up waking up alongside her but lay in bed for a while after, usually with Waddles laying on his chest.

WHAT HE WASN'T used to was waking up to arguments -- at least, not anymore, considering everything was relatively peaceful at home now. So when he was awoken to the sound of yelling ( and someone speaking almost directly into his ear, ) the vigilante awoke with a slight grunt, golden hues fluttering open gradually. After a moment to recollect and remember where the fuck he was, the elder turtle sat up and yawned, stretching a bit, careful to avoid hitting the younger Mikey.

REALIZING THE ARGUMENT in question was about his presence in the Lair, Night's eyes bounced from Leo to Donnie before he spoke, tone jovial and lighthearted.

" SO, DO I get a say in dis or am I gettin' sent to da' Gulag ? " Good first introduction, genius.

Season 1 episode 4 [The Ruthless Pursuit of Blood With All a Child's Demanding] - part 1/2

- Oh, the sun! Hello, the sun. You're not a familiar presence here.

- Eyyy, we're opening with another Armandaniel scene. I mean, that Rashid guy and our Danny boy. "Mr de Pointe du Lac will be resting today" - Armand what does that meaaaaan. Armand giving Daniel Claudia's diaries. Oof. Are we ready for the paiiiiin.

- Shout out to the props department because those diaries are so pretty.

- Shout out to Bailey, I adore her voice.

- [Lestat] "'You were ready to abandon our home, and now you want a third.' [Louis] 'I just need her not to die. Please.'" - you know, there are hospitals. Yeah, skin grafts are not a thing in 1917, but the hospitals can still help her... She is not your penance.

Fascinating the way the scene completely changes tone and atmosphere in Lestat's recollection. Though, which one is the most real... Memory is a beast. But Louis remembers it as something quite romantic in a way, life blossoming out of darkness. Meanwhile, for Lestat, Claudia's rebirth is mired in desperation, anguish and Louis' loss of control. And the way Claudia writes it, well, she never had a say in it, didn't she? She was ready to die, she welcomed death. And then she was pulled back from it and thrust into a new life, and like she says, "I decided to make the best of it".

- [Louis] "'It's a special trick only folks like us have, like the nails and the teeth.' [Claudia] 'So you can hear me, but he can't? That make him the dumb one?'" - oooh, ouch. Right from the beginning, it's Louis and Claudia, and then Lestat left behind. You can hear the abandonment issues making themselves louder.

[Lestat] "'I'll teach you, just like I taught Louis here. But not if we're going to have family secrets.' [Claudia] 'We're a family?' [Louis] 'Yeah, but with no secrets.'" - points afforded for trying. Also, the different roles are already made: Lestat teaches how to be a vampire, Louis upholds humanity and family values. And Claudia is an excellent student...

Love how she immediately calls them "Daddy Lou" and "Uncle Les".

- [Louis] "Looks like she take after me" - aw, Lou, baby. You couldn't be more wrong.

That first hunt is interesting. First the way they talk about Claudia's outfit - she's a doll to them. It's all about how they can mold her, how they can make her into a reflection of themselves, and which one will have more influence, will be more represented in her. What she wants, who she is, barely even enters into consideration.

Secondly, there's the speed with which Claudia adapts to hunting. The way she lures the policeman by humming, playing the lost little girl, that's not something she was taught, that's something she's learned to do herself, naturally, instinctively.

- [Lestat] "An ominous observation, her young lady metabolism is permanent now" - nooo, you don't say? At least Lestat is aware. Welcome to eternal teenagehood. What a hell.

[Lestat] "'Histrionics.' [Louis] 'Some sleep is what she needs.' [Lestat] 'Sedation is what she needs.' [Louis] 'She'll settle.'"

Let me die of laughter first, that banter is perfect. Total old married couple vibes. Now. Looove how they're here talking about Claudia while not even paying attention to her. They're in their bubble, remodelling their family life as if their third member didn't have their own agency and free will, as if they could control and predict how she'll act, and meanwhile Claudia's like "sayonara dummies, I'm starving and I've got all the power to help myself, don't need you". And ain't that gonna be the heart of the matter, control versus freedom, life as a unit versus individual agency.

- Really love the way they show Claudia's... Is it madness? Is it the chaos of teenage hormones being brought to a hundred by vampirism? In any case, she is all over the place at the beginning. Eating human food and repainting the walls with it, playing with the sun's fire...

- [Louis] "'The sun comes up, we go down. That's never gonna change. We've got rules, Lil Miss.' [Claudia] 'Rules are for fools, Daddy Lou.' [Louis] 'Keeping you safe, little waif.'" - excellent back and forth, top notch, rhymes comprised. Nothing to say.

- [Lestat] "'She talked to the book again. Why do you talk to the book?' [Claudia] 'The book is my friend!' [Louis] 'The book is her friend.' [Lestat] 'The book is a book.'" - parent 1 being completely befuddled by their child, parent 2 being overly indulgent with that same befuddling child and patiently telling their partner "there there. She'll make sense to you one day".

- The fight in French, lmao, I'm wheezing. But aside from the humor of the scene, there's the important, deeper part too: Claudia asking questions, as all teenagers do, and Lestat refusing to answer. Lestat's refusal to tell either Louis or Claudia his history is another one of those extremely crucial point at the centre of the conflict.

- The coffin scene, how Louis gets seriously into the roleplay (I see your kinks, Lou), and when Claudia doesn't play along and the guy gets suspicious, how he knows immediately what Lestat's about to do, without even looking at him.

- "A girl vampire needs her own space if she's gonna find herself in this no-day world. And diary, you can already tell, the words come easier when you're locked in tight, wrapped in pink satin and Daddy Lou's feet ain't in your face. It's just me, my pen, my brain, my heart and the blood of the street car conductor I drained after he got off work. Thank you, street car driver. I hope they got more of you at your company to fill in for you. It's never great waiting for the car, especially when the weather gets hot."

She's just like me fr fr. Joke aside, round of applause for Bailey's narration, and another for the writers. There's something so innocent still in this Claudia, something pure and untouched - despite the great ease and joy she has in killing and feeding. Like a baby bird...

And then spying on her parents getting it on, but also, aaaaw, soft Loustat scene. What halcyon days.

- [Louis] "Sometimes, old people don't like talkin' much about the past. Sometimes, you gotta be careful where you dig, you understand." - what kills me here is Louis' understanding. He's fine with Lestat not telling him where he's from or who turned him. He's aware Lestat's already old, and may not want to revisit painful memories, just like he himself doesn't want to revisit Paul's death or his human family rejecting him.

Now the thing is, in the book, Lestat arrives in NOLA barely 30 human years old and 11 in the Blood, with his very human and very old and very sick biological father. So this Lestat and this Louis are starting more or less from an equal point, both starting this journey as vampires more or less together - yes, Lestat has 10 more years of being a vampire plus old secrets that are not his to divulge, and two other fledglings, one who goes insane and dies, the other one who wants nothing to do with humanity and prefer the wilderness. Louis is his first real companion, in a sense. The first who chose to come with him - Gabrielle he brought because she was dying, Nicki because it was the only way to protect him from Armand's coven. Louis, he brought him in because he chose him and Louis said yes, and Louis does stay with him willingly and lovingly - at least for a while. While they were both still regaining some equilibrium. Before the lack of answers, the lack of total trust, and their respective issues and trauma reared their heads, and then Claudia happened.

But here, Lestat has a century of advance on Louis. He has a whole history. And Louis is aware of this history, even if he doesn't know the details, and he doesn't feel like pushing. He wants to keep the peace. Alas they still have the same lack of trust, communication and the same issues to deal with.

- [Claudia] "'How does it work, love between two men?' [Louis] 'I don't know. Works like... It works like love.'" - I need an edit of s1 Claudia asking that and s2 Claudia going "now I know what two fat cocks etc". And character development! Louis is fully alright with his sexuality now. AND it is love, that's literally him admitting it.

- MUSLIM ARMAND YES PLEASE. Hi Rolin Jones please, pleaaaaase confirm Muslim Armand in season 3 pleaaaaaase I'm begging on my knees.

[Rashid/Armand] "'Do you have what you need, Mr Molloy?' [Daniel] 'A cure for Parkinson's?'" - careful what you wish for, Danny. He might take you up on that a bit too literally.

[Daniel] "For a killing machine, I kinda like her." - yeah, me too.

[Rashid/Armand] "Dubai is a child, Mr Molloy. No one's a native." - little nod to book Armand, that, Daniel pinpointing Kazakhstan or Crimea as his origins. And interesting little insight into the mind of a 500yo guy. He's seen empires rise and fall, ancient cities levelled down... What is Dubai for him but a mere second of existence?

- "Daddy Lou, when am I gonna grow into this? [...] Kill, spend. Kill, spend. Then the next thing you know, the leaves are turnin'." - that scene is fascinating. Not just Claudia starting to realise she'll never change and also be a little girl, but also, the visual itself. Lestat and Louis sharing a dance, lost in each other, in their own little world, and Claudia standing in the corner, isolated, alone, lost staring in the fire. That speaks for itself.

And the Lioncourt domestic family life carries on undisturbed... For now.

Ichirou -- H歴維新 / The H Age Revolution

(Side note about the title: I'm using "revolution" here in a general sense, but this specific wording is evocative of the Meiji Restoration, the political revolution in the late 1800s that ended the regime of the Tokugawa shoguns and "restored" the old social order under the emperor while radically transforming Japanese society as a whole. Here, we should understand that Ichirou is tearing down Chuuouku's reign to usher in a new state of society.)

(Fifteen seconds in) YOOO this goes hard. I like this beat and the vaguely military-esque theme w/ the horns.

(At end of preview) DAMN okay. Give me a sec to get my thoughts in order.

Every time I see the language in these songs, I'm reminded of a video of an NHK presenter guy reading the lyrics of one song and announcing dryly, "They're all very good at kanji."

I love how this is much punchier than Break the Wall. Ichirou seems to be much more of an active agent in it, not just the figurehead leader of a revolution--and I LOVE that. It's great to see Ichirou embracing his individuality and not simply playing into the image of MC BB that others want him to be.

I also love all the callbacks to previous songs, quite literally going back to basics. ペンは剣より偽りがない ("The pen is mightier than the sword, and that's a fact!") goes all the way back to Hypmic's very first song's ペンは剣よりヒプノシスマイク ("The Hypnosis Mic is mightier than the sword")

Can't wait to get the full version and learn the lyrics. Seems like a hella fun song to rap.

(I'm butchering its lyricism but whatever) I love that Jirou is actually acknowledging his past and his struggles instead of pushing it away. You notice how his comments on the past are always either "Ichirou was so cool" or "Saburou used to be such a cute kid; what happened?" ? It's good to see him finally being honest enough to touch on his hurt feelings.

(End) Hmm... I don't know how I feel about this one at first liston. I really like Jirou's voice actor's singing voice, so I'm kinda not feeling the autotune. On the other hand, his singing voice definitely has more of a sweet/young flavor, and I can see the authors wanting to lean away from that to make him sound more adult. I think my issue is this song sounds... idk, a bit too idol pop rock to my tastes. I don't mean that idol pop rock is a bad thing; it's simply not my personal preference.

(Side note about the title: Japanese borrows some terms for stages of life from ye olde Chinese (<- very technical term) wherein stages of life correspond to colors and seasons. You may know the word "seishun" (blue spring) or have seen blue = youth as a recurring piece of imagery in Japanese media. (BSD's Blue Period, anyone?) "Shuka" (red summer) is the stage that encompasses most of adulthood; it's the summer or prime of a person's life. The word conveys a sense of energy and a greater understanding of the world than in the youthful seishun period. Sounds like the Hypmic authors want to convey that our baby boy is growing up! *sobs into a hankie*)

(End) Hmm... Musically, I liked the piano as a consistent piece of imagery for Saburou. It was a little too chill for me, but I always say this and always warm up to Hypmic songs over time lol.

Lyrically, I kept thinking throughout the video "This would be easy to translate" because Saburou monologues for most of it haha. Apart from the imagery related to seasons and the BB's heat/energy "firing" him up to reach the hot summer of adulthood, most of the song is surprisingly literal and straightforward. Saburou states in plain terms that he wants to go be his own person (seems to be the running theme of this album), but it's a departure from his usual style of complex imagery and vocabulary. I would guess that's on purpose, as the song opens with "All through my childhood, I could never wait to grow up. I'm a better rapper than Ichirou, but no one ever sees me as anything but an accessory to him. At least I'm better than Jirou in every way-- oh, who am I kidding? Look at me going on like an edgy middle schooler. I'm always smart, collected, calm--but on the inside, I'm NOT okay!" That is, Saburou is purposefully throwing away his attempts to look smart and mature for his age. He's allowing himself to be rough and emotional like any fourteen year old.

"Umm... Haku..?" He looked and me and hummed. "the... The train is about to leave.." I pointed at the train and Haku nodded. "Sure is." I watched as the train pulled away from the station. 'If he pulls me to some secret portal I might freak out.' I thought.

Haku was standing hands on his hips in front of an ice cream vending machine. I continued my interrogation. "Shouldn't we have gotten on it if we're headed for Tokyo Bay?" I shrugged, hoping that he wasn't going to say what I think he's gonna say. "This way's faster, actually." Okay- He didn't say the line but that's almost close...

Haku scanned his phone on the vending machine and... the vending machine let out a meow..? I smiled, finding that quite cute. But then... the vending machine slid open to reveal, "S-Space?!" I questioned in shock. "Don't let go of my hand." Haku suddenly grabbed my hand and he dragged me into the space door. "WHOA!" I yelped and kept a tight hold of the hairclip that Prince Rielle gave me.

"E-Eh..? We're... floating? Wait no... We're falling..." I hummed as I cleared my vision. "Haha! I like your energy. That's right. We're falling slowly." Haku pulled me closer to him and pointed to a bunch of stuff. "It's lost property." Haku explained. "Oop- Look out, we're about to speed up." I flinched and braced myself as we fell faster.

"This is out stop. I stared in awe. "A train station in space?!" I took out my phone and took some photos and Haku laughed. "Don't worry. Unlike the last one, this train comes with a safety guarantee." I just hummed as I heard a train pull up. 'Yup... this is definitely magic...' I sweatdropped and hid my wand in my blazer pockets... Actually I kinda regret wearing my NRC uniform now... The pockets are too small...

"That's out ride." I looked to where the trail whistle was and gasped as I saw a train, riding on stars. "A steam train on stars? It's beautiful!" I awed. "That's the Galaxy Express. You've never seen one before?" Taking his question seriously, I shook my head. "Ahah! I meant in cartoons and comics~" Haku then walked forward to the train while I took more photos. "We're in the realm of non-fiction though. Go on, climb aboard."

I hummed and groaned. "Safety guaranteed, remember? Don't worry~ If anything happens, I'll protect you." Haku offered me a hand so I smiled as I felt a bit safer. "Okay" We walked into the train and I took more photos. 'It's beautiful!' I smiled.

Then I lowered myself into a seat. The soft velvet was so comfortable I relaxed just a little in spite of myself. The levers, switches, and dials peppered throughout the train car were reminiscent of an old age gone by. The warm wooden walls were lit by antique lamps hung from the ceiling. The starry sky outside was visible through the windows. "it's absolutely stunning." I awed more and took more photos. "Meow." I yelped at the sudden noise and looked around to find a white cat with a train conductors cap on. 'SO CUTE!' I thought and pulled Haku's sleeve out of reflex while I took photos of the cat.

"Heheh- Sorry to spring this one on you. Could you take us to the academy?" The cat walked pass us and I started taking a video. Then the cat turned around and meows happily. The swaying bottlebrush tail disappeared into the driver's compartment and I stopped the video. A beat later, the steam whistle blew, and the train chugged forward.

"That's the conductor. Don't worry- he doesn't bite." My jaw dropped. "That cat is the conductor..?" The train began to pick up speed, then entered a tunnel. 'I have to send this to Idia and Ortho!' I smiled. But before I clicked send I thought against it. 'Or... maybe later... they might ask if I got home. If tell them no then they'll probably tell Prof. Crewel... and Crewel will beat Crowley...

'I'll tell them later~' I thought and look a photo. "Ne ne~ Haku. Is it alright if I take a photo of you?" Haku chuckled and sweat dropped. "I expected you to be more nervous than awestruck. But that's kinda cute so why not?" Haku then shrugged and posed, he crossed his right leg over his left and held up a peace sign. I just hummed. "Why was 6 afraid of 7?" Haku became confused and I smirked. "Because 7 ate 9." Haku went wide eyed before he smiled while trying to suppress a chuckle. I took that moment to take a photo of his natural smile. "Aww~ Cute!" I giggled and showed him the photo.

"Whoa... That's really good..." Haku smiled as he stared at the photo. "You're really good at taking photos [Y/n]." I giggled and scratched the back of my neck. "Thanks. It's a hobby." The roar of the engine fought against the darkness, stirring awake some of the anxiety I'd try to lock away. "Most people'll never get to ride this train, you know. I'm glad that you're making the most of it. Oh look. We're nearly there." At Haku's encouragement, I shifted my gaze out the window.

We emerged from the tunnel, and the inky blackness was replaced by warm sunlight. An enormous building loomed outside the window. The gothic exterior stood solemn and elegant against the blue sky. I felt like I'd stumbled into a fantasy world... For the second time... 'NRC is much bigger but Darkwick seems to have a better budget...' I thought and smiled as I remembered all the teasing moments that Crowley would use the lack of money for stuff.

"We will soon stop of Darkwick Academy"

"This is us. Shall we?" I nodded to Haku and stood up. "I'm surprised that we're there already." The Galaxy Express shuddered to a halt, having reached its destination.

'Please don't be a weird, supernatural, all-boys, school' I pleaded.

💡 what's a fun idea you had that you didn't have time to get to?

Honestly, I really wanted to write more for Tales this year now that I'm sort of feeling the spark again! My wife and I were talking about doing a zelloyd collab but never ended up getting around to it, and I have that Aegis/sort of maybe viae idea I mentioned last time around that will end up being written after the new chapter of Philosophy. But I'd really like to get back to writing Symphonia again in particular, seeing as that will always be my 'home base', so to speak! I have an idea for some more Zelos projection about my headcanon of his family's history with mental illness, which will be very cathartic to write, especially with everything I've been dealing with recently.

Uh, can I choose Philosophy here? Lol! It's really my only ongoing project at the moment, everything else has just been oneshots since I normally only have the energy to work on one multichapter at a time. But if you haven't been reading Philosophy of a Knife and have a strong stomach for violence and disturbing content, it's a vivid psychological horror where Ryou becomes Zorc's vessel and Bakura wins, but it's much more about the journey than the destination. Beyond anything else, it's a deep dive into Ryou's changing mindset and corruption with plenty of season zero-esque shadow games, especially in the later chapters. If you read, this gets quite disturbing after chapter 8 or so, but it's got a bit of a slow build to it and everything is warned for in the author's notes with skip lines, but do mind the tags regardless!

🎁 hype up one of your writing buds! what of theirs did you enjoy this year?

I think i'm gonna have to give this one to @kitsunefaux - they've written some really amazing stuff this year and their depictions of the bakumali crew are some of my favourites! I've really enjoyed reading Host which you'll love if you're a fan of Philosophy, I don't usually gravitate towards AUs that deviate from canon too much but this one gripped me by the balls and encouraged me to expand my horizons, lol. I've also had the honour of being brought on as the beta reader for One Wish which is absolutely one of their best works to date, and every time I get sent a new chapter it's normally the highlight of my night. And of course, I can't NOT shout out their fic for the tendershipping zine Parasite too, since the work everyone did on that zine was outstanding! All their stuff is worth reading, but there's a few to start!

Spotify Discovery Review

So I wanted to try something new and figured I'd dive into more music thoughts, and since I've been actually listening to my Spotify Discovery (I needed new music lol) so yeah.

Overall Rating: 13/30 that I really like and even sort of like, so not bad. Probably won't be saving a ton of these for later listening, a few might go into some character playlists at least so that's good. We'll see if any grow on me. Below are some of the standouts good, bad, and indifferent. A few songs I didn't include bc they're instrumentals that I didn't really have any thoughts on. Not even neutral thoughts.

Dear Alice (rainy days)

Slow and dreamlike, it's not really a surprise that there's heavy Alice in Wonderland theming but even though there's not a ton of singing, I found myself enjoying the ride.

Femme Fatale

A fantastic beat, a combination of western and tango aesthetics, a fast paced ride that makes me want to groove. Love the flirty danger that drips off of every word, it's got a solid identity and doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be "edgy" or anything.

YOUR HEAD'S ON FIRE

Louie Zhong is always a bop and his lyrical style is always a joy. Unconventional metaphors and fun little bits, a very groovy guitar line that makes you want to wiggle.

Blink of an eye

Halfy and Winks make DSMP songs, I'm aware of this, however I love their musical style and lyrics. Gives me heavy inspiration for my own story just with how vivid and story based their stuff is. The revolutionary spark in here is nice.

Invisible Dan Avidan has popped into my feeds and I’m not really complaining? I love the rock style/retro vibe that this one has going on, his vocals really sell it. A little bit chase scene a little bit breakdown but overall a good time.

The Moon and Stars

Good folk vibes, gets close to scratching the same itch that The Crane Wives do but not quite, which is still a good time for me. We'll see if this fits a character in future.

The Manic

A great character song, will be applying to my blorbos soon. The pushing away from someone you love because you know you'll hurt them eventually and can't take it. Very good stuff.

Dance While the Sky Crashes Down

Eyyy Jason Webly, I remember you from WTNV. A tango for the end of the world and honestly isn't that a mood? I love the lyrics, although it drags a smidge at the end. Maybe because of TMA I'm a little more inclined towards this.

A song whose title is in Japanese. It's from land of the lustrous and I cannot copy paste the title.

Very eerie, very atmospheric. I haven't watched the show in its entirety myself, but I know that it has horror and suspense interwoven in some of the back half, and the clanking bells and echoes really give the sensation of being watched. Of being on edge. Good stuff.

Break Your Cranck

An altogether inexplicable piece. It’s done on a hurdy gurdy which is already a plus but. It. It sounds like electronica crafted by pirate bees. With some Indian influence thrown in for flavor. Like a space punk pirate bazaar. Very atmospheric but also so so confusing. I love it.

Dance of the blood drunk

A balance of wild carnival and orchestral splendor, feels like an epic batter on a grand scale. The unsteady thrill of never knowing if you’re winning or not.

Pretty good? No real feelings on it.

Again with the good lyrics, but the instrumentation and singing are on the verge of being unlistenable? Like I can listen, and I could see myself putting this on a character playlist or two for sure.

Tavern crawl

A fun little bawdy medieval style song, Annapantsu kills it as expected, but bar songs/drinking songs aren’t really my vibe? But I could see myself grooving to this generally.

Brand new city

Mitski, which is good, but some of her stuff doesn't hit me as much as it does others, and this is one of those times. Not bad by any means, just not something I can see myself going back to.

Cold, cold, cold

Has a story to it, the grandiosity is nice especially near the end but the whole song together doesn’t quite capture me in the way that other artists in this space do. I could listen to it if I was in a particular mood but otherwise it’s not a stand out.

Bitch, Bitch, Bitch

I do like the Jekyll and Hyde musical don't get me wrong but I'm not a huge fan of this one? It's mostly a song meant to establish the upper crust as mindless gossips and twits, the combination of the old Disney-musical style instrumentals and the rather vulgar (by Victorian standards) lyrics is funny but that's all its got.

Timekeeper's Heartbeat

An interesting case where I like the instrumentals and most of the lyrics but it fails to really coalesce into a song? There's bits that don't rhyme for no reason, it comes across like one of those English vocaloid covers that doesn't adjust for the context. If it is, I wouldn't be surprised.

Whiplash (Black Math) Don’t like listening to it, not much else to really say here.

Wish you were gay I’m aware this one is a bit of a darling in some of the animation meme circles but I don’t really care for the instrumentation or the lyrics. Unpleasant to listen to.

Two's a party Jazz/cabaret but there’s not really a depth to it imo. I find it a bit hard to listen to despite the singer being pretty good if a bit... too whispery. A combination of the lyrics and sudden trumpet jump scares ig.

Judas An interesting concept and premise, the dichotomy of a queer relationship contrasted with the religious imagery is layered but the vocal performance doesn’t really do it for me. Seems to want to be mountain goats but it’s a little too raw?

I DONT TRUST U ANYMORE Person with a guitar genre, valid feelings but vocal performance is a bit flat. Reminds me of blink 182 but with none of the energy.

Timeline of Shard and his Mirror counterpart (TW theres sensible subjects, i will try to be as familly friendly as i can but there is still yikes stuff)

Mirror Folks are mostly seen as simply a dark mirror oposite of their Regular counterpart but in this AU, they are their own person!

Of course, if we took a timeline of a MirrorFolk and its regular counterpart life, we see that most of their character and events had been quite different, almost mirror oposite (eyyy).

I will say it now, im not an expert in anything psychologie. If many details are being glossed over or plain wrong, I apologise for this.

Also In this (and future post), you might see me refer to Somius' and Doctor as siblings or things siblings related, i like to refer them a siblings bc exept some arguments and accoastional rivalrey that dosent last for too long, they are getting along as siblings and one refers to the other as their sibling!

And one thing before we begun, neither Doctor or Somius are outwardly evil, one is seriously out of touch and caused horrors, yes, but the dudes never been in a healthy environement in their lives so-

Shard's timeline in the AU:

Shard is adopted by the Squeak Squad and grow in a familly oriented crime familly (familly first, job second), after a while when hes an adult he start his carrer as a Knight because he wanted to protect peoples, he goes onto the abandoned Pop Star, meets and help Buddy and Crowny and love story insues.

They are lovey dovey for a while untill the ForgotenLand when Shard takes the Star Rod to avenge his lover's death, turning into the LuciDreamer.

After some time being in a yikes possition mentaly, he and Buddy managed to reunite and they live a happy life (safe for some shenanigans and horrors)

Somius' timeline in the AU:

Meanwhile Somius started his carrer as a doctor because he wished to help peoples but hes not the phisical type (for now), he goes to Pop Star who is still rulled by the Tyrant (aka Mirror!Buddy/Mirror!Magolor), he becomes the head medic of the castle and works in the meadbay, he tries to help Tyrant but its unsuccesful and the poor Somi ends up in a worst place.

After years of abuse, he had enought and goes to grab the Nebula Cane, turning into a Dark Matter. However, the transphormation leaves him in a weakened state all around and he needs to stay in the now-upgraded sickward for a while.

Thats when Doctor shows up, Somius was wildly terrified at the fact that someone else was using his body but after a while of ...erm 'sibling rivalerie' (im sorry i don't have other terms right now-) both soon learn that cooperation is the key to live a normal life.

After a while of adjusting, healing the few wounds left and helping around, Tyrant showed back up and while Somius is too terrified of him Doctor decide to give the Tyranical overlord a piece of the Karmic Boomerang. And thus the Tyrant was gone from the throne and turned into a soul beast.

Doctor is ...exentric and out of touch, yes but hes not evil, living in the Mirror World isn't easy and many things that are seen as horrifying in the regular world are like a normal saturday in the Mirror World. Plus, hes the one whos facing the horrors head on most of the time since it takes a lot to make him nervous.

While Somius is still the kind yet awkward person hes mostly (?) known for, but his anxietie became worst (with everything that happened, would you blame him if hes a nervous wreck) with the medbay turning into a full on Hospital that replaced the old castle with him (and Doctor) as the head director.

In the AU, even after they gets out of the Mirror, both Doc and Somi are still trying to keep the fact that they are two in this body, mostly fearing of the consequences.

🌿 What is something true about your OC that they refuse to admit about themselves? Is there any reason to this besides embarassment?

Hmm. I think it actually takes Hector QUITE a long time to be willing to admit that he has learned to be brave as the game goes on. I think one of the more subtle minor lessons that was significant to his arc was that being brave does not equate to not being afraid. He had this impressed upon him by Karlach several times (both in banter I wrote and in actual game dialogue) but I think it takes him quite a while to actually believe it. I think this is less about embarrassment and more about holding himself to an impossibly high standard (he does this in a lot of ways in terms of his self-discipline and altruism also). There's also just the fact that he has never been in a situation like this before and has no base of comparison for how he should feel or act. So he's definitely most of the way through the game before he's really ready to acknowledge that he is more than just a terrified mess.

I think there is also probably a small part of him that resents (prior to the end of the game) that he is being railroaded into conceivably avoidable heartbreak because Karlach would rather die than go back to Avernus. But he would never admit this even to himself and definitely not to her, because while understandable, it is ultimately a self-centered feeling and not his decision to make, and he loves her far too much to make her want to feel guilty for what she decides is right for her.

🥀 What is something your OC blames themself for and is it really their fault? Does it keep them up at night and is there any lingering trauma?

This one is kind of interesting for Rakha. She's actually kind of insanely confident in some ways, or at least self-assured; so far she doesn't seem to spend a ton of time looking backwards. When she's in control of herself, she does what seems necessary to her at the time and then stands by it without shame and if you have a problem with it that's your issue, not hers.

The exceptions of course are the points when the Dark Urge co-opts her violence for its own hungry purposes. There are two moments, as of right now (still early in the game), that stick out to me.

One is that she totally would have killed Mizora if Mizora had given her a few more seconds to do so. This was based on the Urge taking advantage of her rage on Wyll's behalf to do something that absolutely would have fucked Wyll over completely. Even though she wasn't successful, she is aware of the failing and it adds to her worries about the Urge's influence.

The other is, honestly, that damned squirrel. Even Alfira's death took place while she was fundamentally unconscious, so Rakha wouldn't exactly say that she blames herself so much as the thing that took control of her. With the squirrel, she was fully conscious the whole time that it happened and witnessed every moment of the Urge breaking through. And that rattled her more than a little and was a scenario where that line between her and the beast felt much more blurred.

It doesn't keep her up at night specifically though, heh. The dreams of blood take care of that already.

📚 Would you ever want to turn writing into a career?

Oh definitely. It's something I've definitely been considering after coming back. I don't think I'm quite happy or satisfied at my job at the moment, so being able to turn something I already love doing (writing) into a full-time job would be quite the twist of fate.

😅 What's a story or scene you've created that you're a smidge embarrassed exists? The Sans fic. I don't if it's still up. I either deleted it and forgot about it, or it's still up on my AO3 account as a reminder of a time when I was a vastly different person than I am now. Or...maybe not that different considering that I'm currently into Haz—

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately? Nope! At most, I'll listen to random lofi music or put on some ambience background noises. I'll end up shutting them off when I'm writing That Scene (TM) though.

😈 Has there been a point in a story where you did something just to be playfully mean to your readers? Killing off one of the twins in the Pyg storyline was definitely a spur of the moment decision to showcase that not everyone is going to have a happy ending. The playfully mean part was supposed to be a "Bye Felicia" joke I made in the end notes. But then I got so excited to post the chapter that I forgot to write the joke. So I guess I'm the joke. EDITED TO ADD: My dumb butt forgot the random ask!

out of all ur arkham fics which one is your favorite and why? Hmm, it might be recency bias, but right now my favorite is the as of yet unpublished Gothic Fantasy AU I'm working on! It's so fun to rework old places and people into something new, yet familiar. And because all the books I have lined up right now are also gothic fantasy, it means I'm never lacking in inspiration!

19. What's your Tav's personality like at the start of the game? Does it change as the game goes on?

Aurel at the beginning of the game is very hesitant to let any of the party members get too close to him. Even the ones he gets along with quickly, like Gale and Karlach. He might be friendly with them, and encourage them to trust one another for the sake of solving the problem of the tadpole...but in truth, he has just as much to hide as they do.

Aurel's relationship with his party members is greatly informed by the last true, strong relationship he formed - a deep gnome named Philo, who Aurel met when he himself was quite young (only in his early 20s). Philo was secretly part of a group of vampire hunters investigating his father at the time, but he and Aurel fell in love. When Philo tried to sway his comrades away from going after Aurel's father, they thought he had been enthralled, and decided to use him as bait to draw out Aurel - and possibly his father, Dragomir. They held Philo hostage, lured Aurel to an abandoned mill, and set it ablaze in the hopes of killing him. Dragomir arrived in time to pull Aurel out of the flames, but it was too late to save Philo.

To say Aurel was devastated by this would be an understatement, and even 100 years later he is still reticent to let people close, or to tell people the truth of his nature. He's deeply afraid of a repeat of the experience with Philo, and keeps even his friends at an arm's length. He'll laugh and joke with them, but he won't truly let them know the real him.

This changes throughout the course of the game. As his companions open up to him, Aurel in turn slowly begins to open up to them as well. He realizes they are all outcasts in one way or another, and after seeing how they accept each other, he slowly realizes it is possible for him to have meaningful connections. He can let people close; he can protect his friends this time around, there needn't be another case like Philo...he needn't be alone.

28. What does your Tav think of Auntie Ethel? What do they tell Mayrina?

Aurel generally tries to keep an open mind about things, and did side with Ethel initially when she was confronted by Mayrina's brothers. He's all too used to how the mob mentality can poison people's minds, and that is precisely what he thought was happening at first. Still, he didn't outright kill Mayrina's brothers - just knocked them out, but found them dead later on in the swamp. This is, of course, after Ethel's done her disappearing act, and that combined with how she was treating Mayrina and Gandrel outright calling her a "hag" was enough for Aurel to realize that, no, Ethel was indeed very dangerous and not to be trusted whatsoever. He'd never encountered a hag before, but his father had told him plenty of stories.

Aurel does tell Mayrina about her brothers' deaths, immediately after the fight with Ethel. Aurel tries to be kind to her, but the stress from the battle has him high-strung and a bit snippier than he usually is, and when she tries to justify Ethel's actions he snaps at her that Ethel killed her brothers. He immediately regrets this, which is what leads him to finding the wand Ethel was going to use to resurrect Mayrina's husband, and he lets Mayrina raise him and keep him without much of a fight. He knows all too well how difficult it is to heal from the loss of a loved one, and if this is part of Mayrina's grieving process then he isn't going to stand in the way of it.

38. Did your Tav deface the portrait of Vlaakith?

Aurel was trying to be respectful while going through the Creche, so no he did not outright deface Vlaakith's portrait. The only times he caused any sort of stir (before the confrontation with the Inquisitor) was when he stepped in to save Youth Varrl, and when he talked Lae'zel out of jumping out of the zath'isk and breaking it.

51. What does your Tav think of the Gauntlet of Shar?

"We've been in here for WEEKS." "It's been two days, Aurel." "I think I'm losing my mind down here." "Aurel it's fine." "The rats are so MEAN here the rats back home were NEVER this mean." "Aurel please stop picking fights with the rats." "That doppelganger looked NOTHING like me! Its coloring and facial proportions were COMPLETELY different. Does Lady Shar think all Drow look the same is that it??" "Oh my god will someone please shut him up."

He didn't have a good time.

52. What does your Tav think of Dame Aylin?

Instant respect for her. He felt for her when he realized she had been condemned to die over and over again for Shar's worshippers, and also knew without a shadow of a doubt that she would be instrumental in taking down Ketheric.

Aurel is also a HUGE sappy romantic, so when he found out she and Isobel were star-crossed lovers his regard for her grew SO much. He hopes she and Isobel are very very happy together <3

61. How does your Tav feel about Baldur's Gate? Is it their home? Is it their first time in the city?

Aurel had visited Baldur's Gate a handful of times before the events of the game, and he had a great appreciate for the history and culture of the city. He's quite sad to see how it's fallen under Gortash's rule, and is extremely critical of the surveillance state Gortash is creating, and how he's turned the citizens against the refugees. But even though Aurel wants to believe the city is capable of better - especially because Wyll keeps saying so - he privately has a much more cynical, jaded view of its citizens. It's that mob mentality again; when people are afraid, they become stupider and crueler and he sees that has taken root all too easily in Baldur's Gate. He tries to help where he can, and his faith grows a little more, but it's not enough to completely banish his cynicism.

The Day that Never Came

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

I think the whole twist part of this fic could be considered it's "way" or "style" here but honestly that didn't come until after I had finished writing it and was struggling to come up with a title. Because it is very fluffy and I'm not usually a particularly fluffy person (despite what my writing habits reflect) i find it harder to name stuff than if it was angsty, and then this title came to me, kinda like a vision out of the blue. That's how most of my titles happen, particularly the angsty and/or pretentious ones

4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?

Mulder saying "Jesus, Scully. You scared the crap out of me." just because that's exactly what I'd think he'd say, like I can hear him saying it in his voice more than the rest of the dialogue if that makes sense

11: What do you like best about this fic?

Honestly the comment Anna left about it being a fluffy fic but a tragic title, because I wasn't sure how many people would notice, and I get a little evil rush imagining people reading this fluffy piece and then realising like oh wait oh no, it never happened and actually this story is a tragedy

2: What scene did you first put down?

This was just the dialogue of Scully explaining her reasons for getting the tattoo in the first draft, mostly because I had a kinda meta epiphany about her daddy issues discussed in the episode and her attempt to be rebellious just full circling back to her issues rather than breaking away from the cycle. I also think I needed to explain it in a way that was satisfying to me, just because I find Never Again a little ooc.

3: What's your favorite line of narration?

I'm not sure that I have a favourite line from this, given that it's quite simple narration and dialogue heavy but I do enjoy writing early morning msr. Other than that this dialogue line is my fave "I'm sorry, mom, I was too tired from fucking my boyfriend last night to pay my respects to God." even though I don't think Scully would probably say that, it was just too funny not to write

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

From this I tried to strike a balance between serious and funny and found it very hard. I'm not sure that I accomplished the smooth blending I was looking for in the end, but ita good practise.
