Importance of World Sight Day
World Sight Day: The Importance of Eye Health and How You Can Take Action
World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, aims to raise awareness about eye health and how to combat vision impairment and blindness. This day highlights the importance of vision protection and the need for easy accessibility to eye care services worldwide. A large percentage of people around the globe are suffering from some form of eye disorder. From cataract to macular degeneration and myopia to presbyopia, with eye care awareness and best practices, many eye conditions can be prevented from progressing and causing permanent damage.
Vision Care and Awareness:
World Sight Day focuses on various activities specific to eye and vision health, such as encouraging governments, organizations and communities to take action toward better eye care facilities, awareness campaigns, free eye examinations, outreach programs and educational initiatives to highlight the importance of vision health and the impact of visual impairment on individuals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) data shows that at least 2.2 billion people around the world have a near or distant vision impairment, with at least 1 billion of those cases being preventable or treatable. The goal of World Sight Day is to make communities and individuals aware of these preventive measures and treatments that can preserve the quality of their vision and protect their sight.
Steps to Protect Your Vision:
Go for regular vision screening and eye examinations
Wear UV protection sunglasses when outdoors during the day
Take a nourishing and eye health promoting diet
Limit screen time
Follow the 20-20-20 rule
Stay hydrated
By engaging the public through social media, fundraising and community activities, World Sight Day can help shed light on eye health issues and create greater awareness about the benefits of practicing healthy eye habits, so everyone can enjoy the gift of sight.

Importance of UV Protection Sunglasses
UV Protection and Eye Health
UV protection sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory - they play a crucial role in safeguarding eye and vision health. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun poses a significant threat to the eyes, potentially leading to various eye conditions and diseases. Therefore, wearing sunglasses with proper UV protection is essential for maintaining good eye health.
UV protection and eye health:
UV protection sunglasses shield our eyes from harmful UV rays, which can cause damage to the cornea, lens, and retina over time. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation without protection increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even certain types of eye cancer.
Glare protection and eye health:
Wearing UV protection sunglasses reduces the risk of developing photokeratitis, also known as "snow blindness" or "sunburn of the eye", which occurs when the eyes are exposed to intense UV rays, often reflected off snow, water, or sand. This sharp reflected light is known as glare.
UV protection sunglasses also help prevent premature aging of the delicate skin around the eyes, protecting it from wrinkles, fine lines and sunspots.
Therefore, investing in high-quality sunglasses with adequate UV protection is a must for preserving eye health and preventing various eye conditions caused by exposure to harmful UV radiation. By wearing UV protection sunglasses consistently, individuals can enjoy clearer vision, reduce the risk of eye damage and maintain good vision even in their old age.

listen. listen to me so carefully right now. (if you're in the eclipse path/planning on viewing). please don't stare directly at the sun tomorrow. i am begging you - do not stare at it. if you got eclipse glasses off of amazon/other, please put them on in your house and make sure you can't see anything; if you can still see like regular sun glasses, they are not safe for eclipse viewing, you will burn your retinas, and we cannot fix that. eclipse glasses should be iso/ce certified, and aas (american astronomical society) approved. please make smart choices and protect your eyes. please.
#psa from your friendly neighborhood eye care provider#the office is already fielding so many calls about this make good life choices#very important#eclipse#solar eclipse#eye health#not medical advice#just me screaming to please protect your eyes#ive seen exactly one case of solar retinopathy in my career so far please don't give me another one

Why to Invest in Eye Health Care?
Eye and Vision Health Care
Investing in eye health care is not just a matter of maintaining good vision; it is a crucial investment in one's overall well-being and quality of life. Here are few compelling reasons why we need to prioritize and invest in eye health:
Preservation of Vision
Maintaining good vision is essential for carrying out daily tasks such as reading, writing, cooking, driving, and so on. Many eye conditions, like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, are progressive eye diseases and can lead to irreversible vision impairment if left untreated. Regular eye examinations can identify these conditions in their early stages, allowing for timely treatment and management.
Investing in regular eye check-ups will ensure that any early signs of eye issues can be detected and treated on time. This is essential for preserving eye health and preventing vision loss.
Overall Health
Eye health is often linked to systemic health issues such as diabetes and hypertension. A comprehensive eye exam can detect signs of these conditions, enabling early diagnosis and treatment. By managing potentially serious health issues early on, you can save money in the long run by avoiding expensive treatments. Even eye conditions when treated in their early stages are often less expensive than addressing advanced or irreversible damage. Taking care of your eyes can be a critical component of managing your overall health.
Enhanced Productivity and Improved Quality of Life
Good vision is vital for living a good quality life with high productivity. Clear vision allows you to complete your tasks without straining your eyes or making too many errors. Correcting vision problems with eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery can significantly improve work efficiency and reduce eye strain. Clear vision enables us to enjoy hobbies, participate in sports, and appreciate the beauty of the world around us. By investing in eye health we can continue to enjoy these activities well into old age. Investing in eye health can boost productivity and job performance and can significantly contribute to one's quality of life
Vision problems can lead to frustration, anxiety, and even depression. Investing in eye health care can not only help preserve your eyesight, but will also help maintain emotional well-being by ensuring that you can see and engage with the world around you. Regular eye check-ups should be an integral part of everyone's healthcare routine, ensuring bright and clear days.

How is an Eye Examination Related to Your Overall Health?
8 things your eyes reveal about your health
Your eye health is not just about your eyes; it can offer valuable insights into your overall well-being. The complex connection between your eyes and the rest of your body means that certain eye problems may indicate underlying health issues that would otherwise go unnoticed.
For instance, experiencing blurry vision might serve as an early warning sign of an impending stroke or uncontrolled diabetes. Yellow eyeballs could be indicative of jaundice, which often results from liver inflammation or damage. And, bloodshot eyes typically occur when delicate blood vessels in the eyes dilate due to irritation or infection, potentially leading to leakage and even a haemorrhage.
These warning signals should not be ignored, as they can be manifestations of underlying health conditions that require immediate medical attention. That's why regular eye examinations are crucial, not just to eye health, but also for gaining valuable information about your overall health. A comprehensive eye check-up can detect various potentially dangerous health problems in their early stages so that timely treatment can commence.
Speak to your eye care professional and schedule an appointment for a complete eye health check-up. By doing so, you can stay proactive about your well-being and ensure any potential health issue can be detected and addressed early on. Here are 8 things your eyes reveal about your health.

Important Contact Lens Safety Measures
Contact lens FAQs
While contact lenses provide convenience and clear vision, improper use and neglect can lead to serious eye problems. If you are a contact lens wearer, the following essential safety measures can help prevent potential eye issues and ensure a safe and comfortable experience with your lenses.
Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your contact lenses. Avoid using scented or oily soaps as they can leave residues on your hands, which may transfer to the lenses and cause discomfort or infections.
Cleaning and Disinfection: Clean and disinfect your contact lenses daily using the recommended solution. Never reuse the old solution, and always use a fresh solution in your lens case. Never use water or saliva to clean your lenses, as they may contain harmful microorganisms that can get transmitted into your eyes and cause injection..
Lens Case Care: Regularly clean and replace your contact lens case to prevent bacterial build-up. After wearing your lenses, rinse the case with fresh solution, and allow it to air dry. Replace the case every three months or as recommended by your eye care professional.
Avoid Prolonged Wear: Follow your eye care professional's instructions regarding the wearing schedule for your contact lenses. Avoid wearing them for longer than the recommended time frame as this can increase the risk of eye infections and oxygen deprivation to the cornea.
Avoid Sleeping with Lenses: Sleeping with contact lenses can hinder oxygen flow to the eyes, increasing the risk of corneal infections and other complications. Always remove your lenses before sleeping, even for short naps.
By adhering to these contact lens safety measures, you can enjoy the benefits of clear vision without compromising the health of your eyes. If you experience any discomfort or notice any changes in your vision, promptly consult your eye care professional for guidance and assistance.

Labor, on its own, has no inherent value. The willingness or ability to labor does not translate to virtue. It can confer financial value, since everyone should be compensated for their labor, but it absolutely does not have inherent moral value.
Disabled people are not obligated to perform for you. They are not required, morally, to break themselves in order to earn some sort of personal value and prove their "worth" to society. They do not need to exhaust every possible means of survival to warrant aid, or spend the entirety of their existence pursuing the same amount of production as others even though it takes everything they have and leaves no room for anything else. They are not obligated to push their limits.
If that pisses you off because YOU have to work to the limit, or beyond, your problem is that you are not being paid enough or you are being asked to do the work of more than one person. Not that disabled people get help for "nothing".
You deserve better, too, you lovable dingus! Every single thing that benefits disabled people will benefit you and the ones you love, either immediately, or eventually. All of it!
#when i go into a care home my disability payments stop going to me and go to the care home except for the $50/month they will let me have#that's right!#so if you're temporarily abled maybe consider that a run of bad luck is all that separates you/your loved ones from this potential future!#you're fucked if you can't labor so it's time you accept that it isn't a virtue and people who can't still deserve support because buddy#i have news for you about human minds and bodies and their relationships to accidents and illnesses and time#and pal you aren't going to like it#get uncomfortable and get to work pushing for unions that might secure you benefits#and push for things that benefit adults who have never been able to work because that's just plain the right thing to do#like UBI and an end to income caps and savings limits for disabled people#and also extremely extremely low or no taxes for the self-employed#and universal health care#and biger SSI payments#stop seeing the value of your fellow human through the lens of exploitation#stop being the eyes of capitalism and be the hands that pull others up

Eyesight is a valuable tool children need to perform well in school. Having problems with their vision can negatively impact their learning and grasping abilities. Poor vision means difficulty reading, as seeing text and differentiating between similar looking words becomes difficult. This will make learning and completing class assignments hard and the child will feel left behind.
Vision issues can also lead to poor hand-eye coordination which leads to poor sports performance. Children with vision problems usually avoid recreational activities that require good distance vision. Not being able to read, play and participate in school activities properly make them feel inadequate as compared to their classmates which hurts their level of confidence.
It's crucial that as a parent you ensure that your child is not suffering from any vision related issues such as frequent vision changes, nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, eye focusing, eye tracking and eye coordination.

Learn More About Common Eye Conditions
Common Eye Conditions
Eye care is an essential aspect of human health and well-being. Being able to see clearly makes our day-to-day lives easier, contributing to a good quality of life. Eye conditions can however put our vision health at risk and need immediate attention and treatment to mitigate and reverse any damage. Some of the common eye conditions are:
Astigmatism - It is a refractive error of the eye that occurs when the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, causing blurred vision. It can be corrected with prescription glasses, contact lenses, or an eye surgery.
Cataracts - It involves clouding of the eye's natural lens, leading to blurry vision and sensitivity to glare. Surgical removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with an artificial lens is a common and effective treatment for cataracts.
Glaucoma - This is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.
Conjunctivitis - Commonly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergens. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve eye drops or ointments.
Macular degeneration - It affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. If not treated, it can lead to vision loss in the central field.
To protect your eyes from these eye disorders, it's crucial to get your eyes checked on a regular basis. Getting your eyes checked regularly by an eye care specialist will help you detect the symptoms early on and get prompt medical attention. Learn more about common eye conditions.

How to Get Started with Eye Health Care?
6 ways to take care of your eyes
Eye health care is an essential aspect of maintaining overall well-being and quality of life. Our eyes are precious organs that allow us to experience the world around us, making it crucial to take proactive steps to preserve their health. Proper eye care involves a combination of regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices, and protective measures.
Regular eye check-ups: Regular eye examinations are vital for detecting any potential issues early on, even if you have no apparent vision problems. Comprehensive eye exams conducted by qualified optometrists or ophthalmologists can identify conditions like myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases that may not show any noticeable symptoms in their early stages.
Healthy lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle plays a significant role in eye health care. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, can promote optimal eye function and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Protective eyewear: It is also important to protect our eyes from potential hazards. Whenever you are engaging in activities that could cause eye injury, such as sports, DIY projects, or handling hazardous substances, make sure to wear protective eyewear to prevent accidents that could lead to vision impairment.
Reduce screen time:
In today's digital age, prolonged exposure to digital screens can strain our eyes, leading to digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. Employing the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking away from the screen every 20 minutes at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds, can help alleviate eye strain. Also, try to make a conscious effort to reduce your screen time and replace it with other activities.
Regular eye exams, a healthy diet, active lifestyle, protective eyewear, and good screen habits are all crucial elements in maintaining optimal eye health. By adopting these practices, we can enjoy clear vision and a better quality of life for years to come. Learn more about eye health care!
