Importance of Early Detection in Retinal Diseases
We can see and understand the world around us thanks in large part to the retina, a sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Sadly, retinal conditions can progressively reduce eyesight and, if not addressed, result in lifelong blindness. Early identification and prompt action are essential for maintaining vision and avoiding permanent harm. This blog will discuss the critical value of early identification in retinal illnesses and how it may have a profound impact on a patient's quality of life.
Let's read it out:
Finding Hidden Threats
In their early stages, retinal disorders frequently manifest quietly and without obvious symptoms. A slow loss of vision can occur as a result of conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa. Regular eye exams by a trained eye care practitioner are crucial for early detection of these disorders and quick action.
Maximising Treatment Effectiveness
Early identification frequently opens the door to more potent treatment alternatives. Eye care professionals can advise on suitable treatments, drugs, or operations to prevent or reduce disease development, minimise vision loss, and preserve quality of life, with prompt diagnosis.
Preventing Vision Loss
Once retinal illnesses cause vision loss, they frequently cannot be reversed. Early identification gives you the chance to take action before serious damage takes place, greatly lowering the risk of long-term vision loss.
Protecting Peripheral Vision
Peripheral vision loss can develop gradually in some retinal conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa. Early diagnosis enables patients to adapt and make better use of their remaining eyesight, preserving their independence and safety throughout everyday activities.
Increasing Life Quality
Having healthy eyesight is essential for overall well-being and life quality. Early diagnosis and treatment of retinal illnesses can support people in maintaining their independence, participating in their favourite hobbies, and maintaining social connections.
Increasing Proactive Eye Care Power
As we get older, it's even more important to get regular eye exams since the risk of retinal illnesses rises. Early identification enables people to take proactive measures to safeguard their vision through lifestyle changes and appropriate eye care.
Conclusion
It is impossible to exaggerate the value of early identification of retinal disorders in terms of saving sight. Eye care practitioners can apply effective treatment techniques, reducing or even stopping disease development and maintaining vision, by spotting retinal disorders in their early stages. Regular eye exams are essential for identifying these silent dangers, giving people the power to take charge of their eye health and live a life with unhindered vision. Make an appointment with an eye care specialist right away to protect the priceless gift of sight if you or a loved one haven't had an eye checkup in the last year. Rather, if you are facing any retinal disease, our team of Retinal Disease in London is here to assist you. We have years of experience in this field.

How Light Affects Your Eyes and When to See an Ophthalmologist
Light plays a crucial role in vision, but prolonged or excessive exposure to different types of light can have harmful effects on eye health. Understanding how light affects your eyes and recognizing the warning signs that require a visit to an ophthalmologist is essential for maintaining long-term vision health.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6f9250f079be799538321f54219f3e6c/b46ce18bcd08074a-37/s540x810/c0d3aeb2e2e0f8eb34f8dbce7d2cefccd2fa02a9.jpg)
How Different Types of Light Impact Your Eyes
1. Natural Sunlight (UV Radiation)
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can increase the risk of eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis. Wearing UV-protected sunglasses can help reduce the harmful effects of UV radiation.
2. Blue Light from Screens
In today’s digital age, prolonged exposure to blue light from smartphones, laptops, and tablets is common. Blue light can cause digital eye strain, dryness, and may contribute to retinal damage over time. Taking breaks, using blue light filters, and adjusting screen brightness can help reduce eye strain.
3. Artificial Indoor Lighting
Bright LED and fluorescent lights can cause glare and discomfort, leading to headaches and eye fatigue. It’s important to ensure proper lighting conditions while reading or working to avoid unnecessary strain.
4. Low Light Conditions
Reading or working in dim lighting can force the eyes to work harder, leading to temporary discomfort, strain, and blurred vision. Adequate ambient lighting is crucial for reducing stress on the eyes.
When to See an Ophthalmologist
While occasional discomfort due to light exposure is common, persistent symptoms may indicate an underlying eye condition. You should consult a top ophthalmologist in Delhi if you experience:
1. Increased Sensitivity to Light (Photophobia)
Extreme sensitivity to light could be a sign of conditions like corneal abrasions, uveitis, or migraines. If light sensitivity persists, an eye specialist doctor in Delhi can diagnose the underlying cause.
2. Frequent Headaches and Eye Strain
Chronic headaches after prolonged screen use or exposure to bright lights may indicate an issue with your vision or eye muscles. Visiting an eye hospital in South Delhi for a comprehensive eye exam can help identify the problem.
3. Dryness, Irritation, or Redness
Continuous exposure to artificial lights and digital screens can lead to dry eye syndrome, which requires medical attention. A visit to an eye clinic in South Delhi can help determine the best treatment options.
4. Blurry or Double Vision
Sudden or persistent blurriness or double vision may signal eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal issues. Consulting the best eye surgeon in Delhi is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment.
5. Difficulty Seeing at Night
If you experience trouble seeing in dim light or while driving at night, it could be a sign of vitamin A deficiency, cataracts, or other vision impairments. Seeking professional care from an eye specialist doctor in Delhi is recommended.
How to Protect Your Eyes from Light Damage
Wear UV-protected sunglasses when outdoors to shield your eyes from harmful rays.
Follow the 20-20-20 rule when using digital screens—every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Use anti-glare and blue light filters on screens to minimize exposure.
Maintain proper indoor lighting to reduce glare and strain.
Schedule regular eye check-ups at an eye clinic in South Delhi to detect early signs of eye problems.
Conclusion
Light exposure is an unavoidable part of daily life, but managing its impact on eye health is crucial. If you experience any persistent eye issues related to light, consulting a top ophthalmologist in Delhi at a reputed eye hospital in South Delhi can help ensure timely treatment and long-term vision protection. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen—prioritize your eye health today!

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is now an IAPB member
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d30a4514bc4c7eb3199dfa558a3060fe/e3e5f2f583cb2fd8-61/s540x810/1f28e830d26b531b934a6490b46bddce2741d0cf.jpg)
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, doing over 1,00,000 eye surgeries annually, is the largest super speciality eye hospital network in Eastern India. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital operates in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand with 6 eye hospitals, 37+ eye clinics and a network of 880+ beds. The eye hospital, owned and run by Yugrishi Shriram Sharma Acharya Charitable Trust, woirks towards eliminating curable blindness from low-income geographies by providing free of cost sight-restoring cataract surgeries to the underprivileged patients.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, which is now a part of IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness), has been providing comprehensive, accessible, high-quality and affordable eye care services to the community for the last 18+ years.
Problem of blindness in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh
1 out of 4 blind people in the world live in India, and the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh share a significant burden of this visually impaired population. Within India, the combined population of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (UP) can make it the third most populous country in the world, and in contrast, these are the two states with the highest population of visually impaired and blind people.
The cloudy reality of Bihar
Bihar, India's most densely populated state with a population of around 13 crores and the lowest GDP per capita, is the worst vision impairment-hit state, with an estimated 33 lakh visually impaired people. Around 4,65,120 people are blind in Bihar. Cataract is the primary reason for blindness in Bihar. Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye leading to partial or complete blindness, mostly occurs in the older population. Only 18% of those with refractive errors in rural areas of Bihar receive vision correction treatment, compared to 82% in urban areas.
People in Bihar lacks access to eye hospitals and eye care facilities. The visually impaired population of Bihar has limited access to proper eye care. The older population is the most vulnerable. Bihar has the highest deficit of qualified clinical professionals such as ophthalmologists and optometrists. The majority of eye hospitals are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural populations underserved. For example, 75% of health infrastructure is in urban areas, where only 27% of the population resides. Economic constraints are a major barrier to seeking eye care in rural areas, contributing to the higher prevalence of blindness and visual impairment. Available eye care services are not affordable to the mass. Transportation infrastructure is also very poor which also contributes to patient not availing eye care services. Lower levels of awareness about eye health in the people in rural areas of Bihar contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
Women in rural Bihar are at higher risk of visual impairment. Women in rural India are 1.51 times more likely to be blind compared to men. Men has better access to eye care services. Men are 2.3 times more likely to attend eye camps than women in rural areas.
Visual impairment leads to reduced productivity and increases the economic burden on families and caregivers. Visual impairment and blindness have a negative impact on livelihoods and contribute to poverty. Once an old person becomes blind due to cataract, he becomes a burden on the family that is already struggling to exist due to poverty. The person loses his/ her livelihood and stays confined within the four walls. When a child develops visual impairment, it hinders the overall growth of the child.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital – the IAPB-member hospital
IAPB is a 250-member organisation comprising eye hospitals, international charities, academic institutes, professional bodies and corporate organisations. Operative since 1975, IAPB has advocated the provision of affordable and all-inclusive eye care services to everyone. As an IAPB member, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital has adopted a multi-faceted strategy including outreach camps, vision vans, vision centres, and school/ Anganwadi screenings to provide primary eye care to all. Door-to-door screenings will ensure no one is left behind, especially in remote areas. Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital aims to enhance its eye care facilities to meet its vision 2030. Akhand Jyoti aims to screen 12 million people in rural and tribal areas in India, raising awareness about eye health. Through its Nayan Suraksha Mission (NSM), Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital plans to screen and provide primary eye care to 5 million people over the next three years.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital is committed towards eliminating curable blindness in low-income regions by providing the low-income section of society with affordable, accessible, sustainable, quality curative and preventive eye care services. With the door-to-door eye camps in rural regions of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the hospital aims to provide primary eye care to all so that no one is left behind. The outreach team ventures into the rural hinterlands and identifies the visually impaired patients (giving preference to ones with cataracts in both eyes), bring them to the nearest Akhand Jyoti surgical centre in its own transport, operates on them and send them back to their places after the successful sight-restoring surgeries. Cataract surgeries provided to poor patients are completely free of cost. Akhand Jyoti does over 93,000 eye surgeries annually, of which 80% are completely free to the underprivileged.

The school-screening team visits government run schools in villages to screen and provide primary eye care to the children free of charge. Spectacles are distributed to the visually impaired students at no cost to correct their refractive errors. Children needing surgical interventions are referred to the nearest surgical centres and provided free of cost surgeries. The hospital also engages Anganwadi workers, trains them to screen children and refer patients to the hospital needing eye care interventions.
Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital also provides high-quality paid services to patients. Revenue from these paid services is used to support the free surgeries of the patients. The hospital provides all types of speciality eye care treatments and services such as cataract surgery, corneal and retinal treatments, squint, low vision, lazy eye, oculoplasty, etc.
