I went to the Apple Store yesterday to try the scripted demo of their VR headset. My overall impression is that it's the best possible execution of what might be a fundamentally flawed idea.
The passthrough video is pretty incredible. It's somewhat dimmer than reality, and the color accuracy is just OK, but it's more than good enough to feel like you're looking through clear displays at the real world. I'm told the passthrough on the Quest 3 is even better, but haven't tried that and can't comment. One thing is that there is a weird motion blur effect when you turn your head, I'm not sure if that's a display tech limitation or introduced deliberately by the software as a workaround for a different display tech limitation.
The resolution is 4K per eye, which, as mentioned, is more than enough for a powerful sense of presence in the real world. One of the nifty bits of the demo was when you turn the dial to tune out the world and suddenly you're sitting by a mountain lake, and the feeling of actually being there is overwhelming. The dystopian implications of needing a VR headset to sit at a mountain lake aside, it would be cool to have one just to have your office be anywhere you can imagine. Not $3500-before-tax cool, but cool.
Wow sports leagues are going to love this thing. I don't give a shit about sports and even I was thinking, "If the NBA put a stereoscopic camera courtside and sold you games for $50 a pop, I'd absolutely buy that"
But 4K per eye is not enough to do work, not even close. The experience of using normal computer-y applications on this was not unlike plugging your laptop in to a TV that's at the normal TV distance. You can do it, it works, but it's not anyone's preferred way of working. Text is amazingly legible, but only at sizes that are equivalent to having a single webpage take up your entire 4K monitor at normal monitor distance.
It is not particularly comfortable. Part of this might be that the store demo makes you use the "catcher's mitt" strap, which only goes around the back of your head and so gravity has to be countered only by the pressure of the thing against your face. Reviewers have said that if you use the other band that goes over your head the situation is better, but still.
A lot of early comments were making fun of Apple for having the battery be an external thing you put in your pocket and attach with a wire, but I think that's just fine: we all walk around with giant batteries in our pockets anyway, and anything you can do to have less weight on your head is a Good Thing. But then Apple took all those weight savings and spent them on making the stupid thing out of metal and glass instead of polycarbonate. It's nuts! It's like if you made a car that was 500kg lighter because you invented magical tech for keeping the engine somewhere else, and then went "great! with all the weight savings now we can build the body out of lead". Apple, you don't need to fear plastic. Plastic is good! Plastic built modern civilization.
You control it with a combination of eye tracking and pinch gestures. This is the main piece of evidence of my "best version of a bad idea" thesis: it works really, really well; so well that I can tell this is probably an evolutionary dead end. It's just fine— miraculous, even— for dragging windows around and doing the basic stuff the in-store demo has you do. It's amazing that you can more or less have your hands anywhere, including on your lap, and the recognition works perfectly (by contrast with the HoloLens I tried 5 or so years ago where the gesture recognition was total crap). But it's immediately obvious that you can never do serious manipulation of your computing environment with this.
The takeaway is that it's incredible for passive consumption of specifically-made media, assuming that ever exists at scale. But it will be a long time before we're gogged in like Hiro Protagonist to do our office jobs this way.

I always want Virtual Reality to be better than it is.
VR has been around for approaching a decade at this point, and companies keep trying to make it happen. I have seen the theory that Facebook (Meta) got into the VR game because they want hardware they can control without third parties stopping their data collection, but they appear to be downplaying it now.
So can VR be good? When is it going to happen?
My first headset was the HTC Vive, and it was fun at the time, but playing it today, it's pretty dire. Depressingly low resolution, major screen door effect, big, and bulky. Annoying external trackers. It is like 10% of the way to being what I want VR to be. I still have it but can't really play it since the poor quality usually leads to a one way trip to the floor.
I have tried the Oculus Quest 2, and it is kind of on its way. It has better controllers, some actual passthrough, and the screen door effect is much less pronounced. Too bad Facebook are evil. It's like 40% of the way to what I would consider a good headset to be.
I am looking at the Apple Vision Pro, and it's kind of getting there, it is like 70% of the way to being what I want VR to be. It has crystal clear video with no screen door, passthrough that actually works for professional use, and the hand and eye tracking appears to actually work which is impressive. It isn't for gaming and has absolutely no software support for the VR software people like. It appears to occupy a different niche to the cheaper gaming headsets, aimed at "Professional" use. It shares this trait with the quest pro.
We have come a long way in the last 10 years, but it will probably be another 10 years before virtual reality is something people actually want to use. Tech companies are never ones to give up though, and they will keep painfully iterating until they get there. I think to have a chance, to be the 100% of what I want it to be VR, I think it would need, including but not limited to;
Tethered and untethered use, allowing for local apps or connecting to a PC for extra horsepower. No bullshit lockdowns on software like they have today.
Functional hand tracking AND quality VR controllers for different applications. Both of these exist today but not in the same product at the same time for some reason.
Lightweight and cool. Fanless. Won't give you a spinal injury if you wear it for more than 3 hours. Semiconductor technology is probably about there or will be there soon, but Apple isn't fanless. Sadly Apple's battery in the pocket trick might be the only way to keep the weight down. Batteries just don't really change much, sorry!
Ultra high resolution. No screen door effect. Apple are about here but it's crazy expensive, so in 10 years I am sure the price will go down. VR isn't going to happen unless you can get Vision Pro quality at the baseline, for the price of a Meta Quest.
This really reminded me of when I wanted to get a tablet PC in like 2007 but quality tablets didn't exist yet. It was all massive chonky Windows CE garbage. I knew it was coming, everyone did, but tech wasn't there. The ipad releasing several years later is what really put them in the hands of consumers.
Mass software libraries for VR won't happen until these technical challenges are overcome, and by then, who is going to care? Maybe the vision pro is Apple taking something that already exists and putting it to the mass market, as they have done so many times before, but maybe this time it isn't going to take. Maybe VR is just never going to happen, but if it does, I want to be here for it. Play Half Life Alyx if you can, and never buy a Meta product if you can avoid it.

So here's the new toy that's been distracting me the last couple days. My decade+ old oversized ASUS gaming laptop finally pooped out several months ago, leaving me daily driving my Steam Deck of all things as my main home computer. And don't get me wrong, the Deck has performed remarkably well in that regard, but I've been meaning to get something a bit fancier for a while. Something that could handle 1440p gameplay at a decent framerate while streaming or recording, can manage image and video editing well, and in particular can run some VR games. I've been interested in VR gaming ever since Lobac posted about some of that a while back, especially with the Meta Quest 2 being a solid headset at a really aggressive cost. With the Zuck giving up on the metaverse, the Quest is likely never going to be cheaper than it is now.
I'd waffled for a while about building a PC, but in the end I psyched myself out and decided to go with a pre-built instead. Yes, that means willfully overpaying for the end product by a few hundred bucks to pay someone else to do the assembly and initial set up for me, but in exchange I only had to research one product instead of half a dozen separate components, plus there's a single warranty where if anything doesn't work it's somebody else's problem to fix it, and I'd only have to deal with a delay.
After watching and reading a bunch of reviews, Skytech seemed to be a decent choice for system integrator, with solid to positive reviews for various prebuilt models they offer, including Gamer's Nexus who tend to be pretty harsh on pre-builts. But it was this review from JustIN Tech that sold me on this Azure 2 model. "Performance equivalent to last gens best, but at half the price" is the exact tag line I was looking for, and after a recent price discount it was just within my $2k range.
In retrospect though, I should have done some more research on the specific components. I'm quite happy with the intel 13600 cpu, and while the included cooling setup is overkill for that chip, that just means I've got some free thermal space to overclock or upgrade in the future. Plus, it's pretty, and I'm shallow. On the other hand it turns out the nvidia 4070ti is not well thought of - generally considered badly overpriced, plus has the extra negetive association of being just a rebranding of the failed '4080 12gb' that was so roundly panned that its release had to be canned altogether. And the PNY model that came bundled in my unit isn't even as nice as the Gigabyte one in the JustIN Tech review. One of the reasons why Gamer's Nexus is the better channel for these sorts of reviews is that they do secret shopper and get the same stuff regular folks get, where as brands know what they're sending to channels like JustIN Tech and can take pains to make the best possible impression by including better components and taking extra care in assembly and packaging.
So what should I have purchased instead? I don't know. Maybe the 'blue' model of the same Azure 2 line, which is three hundred dollars cheaper to swap out the 4070ti for an intel Arc a770, which would probably have been more than enough for my intended use cases. Heck, with 4 extra gb of vram it might have even been better than the 4070ti for me in the long term, and if not then I could use the money saved towards swapping out to a better AMD card next gen. But the blue model comes in a blue version of the case, which wouldn't have made the swirly rainbow rbgs pop as much.
Anyway, while I might have made a different choice if I had done more research, that doesn't mean I'm at all unhappy with what I got! The Azure 2 arrived promptly. The build quality of the system is very nice. No damage, no loose or cross-threaded screws. Everything worked right out of the box when plugged in - including all the various external ports. Skytech certainly did a good job putting it all together. While the 4070ti might not be the most reasonably priced card for its performance level, now that it's here and paid for regardless, it seems like it should be able to do everything I want it to, at least for now. And if I end up replacing the gpu sooner then I would have liked, eh, we live and learn.
And while it doesn't matter at all compared to cost and performance, the swirly rainbow rgb lighting makes me feel like a Real Gamer (tm).
Desk is getting a bit cluttered tho.
As for performance, It's quiet and runs cool while playing my current games at top settings - though my particular game selection (mostly just Elden Ring on max settings with Ray Tracing), and my 1080p, 75hz monitor aren't exactly putting it through its paces yet. A new monitor is one of several upgrades & accessories I plan to get to go with this thing in coming months. New monitor, VR headset, an extra ssd on which to install linux - I figure I'll keep the windows install on the side, on the off chance there are games or utilities I can't get running in Linux down the line.
But anyway yeah, that's what I've been so busy with lately, delaying liveblog posts.

the thing that you don't know, tumblr, is that i am actually Not Psychiatrically Capable of being Normal about obi-wan kenobi. several life circumstances external and internal had me watch the star wars prequels when they were released thinking things like "Cool :)" but laying eggs in brain that stayed dormant until i hit around the age that obi-wan was in phantom menace, and watching that movie became basically what people say "the future" will be like when everyone has a VR headset and is living in "the metaverse."
so, now, i'm like "wow I'm a jedi. I'm obi-wan, actually." "you think you're a space hero?" "haha, no. no, that's not why. i take criticism about these things personally despite them being fictional." "because you disagree?" "haha, no. i agree with it." "you talk like a dudebro though." "yeah, obi-wan would think I'm irritating. we are also the same guy. he would not get it. i understand this, though." "your ideas about this seem... uh..." "delusional? yes. Correct. that's actually one of those life circumstances i previously mentioned. there are a lot of dots to connect for this situation. i really wish it was someone obscure instead of one of the most well-known characters on the planet, but here we are. i hate meeting other people who like star wars because i have to sit there constantly thinking about Not saying 'haha. you know actually my disordered brain has adopted a portion of this topic in a way that cannot be divorced from my mental processes or personal identity. oh, you've been a fan of this character since 1977? that's cool. i wasn't alive at that time, but i talk to him personally, sometimes. yeah, in addition to all of this, my mind developed a defense mechanism against itself where i have conversations with him so i am able to stay grounded in reality— haha, no, yeah, i do see the irony there.'"
so that's that information about me. I do not think I will be mentioning this all that much on here. there is actually not a time that i am not thinking about this, however.

PS5 Pro: Rumored Upgrades for Sony's Next-Gen Console
The PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been a massive success since its launch in 2020, with its powerful hardware, lightning-fast load times, and impressive graphics capabilities. However, rumors have been circulating about a possible PS5 Pro, a more powerful version of the console that would offer even better performance and more features. While Sony has not confirmed the existence of a PS5 Pro, there are several reasons to believe that the company is working on a new and improved version of the console. For one thing, Sony has a history of releasing mid-generation upgrades to its consoles, as it did with the PlayStation 4 Pro. Additionally, several reliable sources have reported that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro, including industry analyst Michael Pachter and leaker Tidux. So, what can we expect from a PS5 Pro? Here are some of the most likely features and improvements that the console could offer.
PS5 Pro in Development: What We Can Expect from Sony's Next-Gen Console Upgrade Better Graphics and Performance One of the most significant improvements that a PS5 Pro could offer is better graphics and performance. The PS5 already has impressive graphics capabilities, with support for 4K resolution and up to 120 frames per second. However, a PS5 Pro could take things to the next level with even more powerful hardware and improved cooling systems. This could result in even better graphics, faster load times, and smoother gameplay, which would be especially beneficial for players who are using high-end displays and gaming monitors. More Storage Another possible improvement that a PS5 Pro could offer is more storage. The PS5 comes with a solid-state drive (SSD) that offers fast load times and improved performance compared to traditional hard disk drives. However, the base model of the console only comes with 825GB of storage, which could be limiting for players who like to download and store large games and media files. A PS5 Pro could address this issue by offering more storage, either through a larger SSD or additional storage options such as an external hard drive or SSD. Backward Compatibility The PS5 already has backward compatibility with most PS4 games, allowing players to enjoy their favorite titles from the previous generation on the new console. However, there are still some games that are not compatible with the PS5, either due to technical limitations or licensing issues. A PS5 Pro could improve backward compatibility by offering even better support for PS4 games, potentially allowing players to enjoy all their favorite titles from the previous generation on the new console. Improved Virtual Reality Support The PS5 already has support for virtual reality (VR) gaming through the PlayStation VR headset. However, the current setup requires players to use a separate adapter to connect the PSVR to the PS5, which can be cumbersome and inconvenient.
A PS5 Pro could improve VR support by offering better compatibility with the PlayStation VR headset, potentially eliminating the need for a separate adapter and making it easier for players to enjoy VR games on the console. While Sony has not yet confirmed the existence of a PS5 Pro, there are several reasons to believe that the company is working on a new and improved version of the console. If a PS5 Pro does indeed launch in the future, it could offer several significant improvements over the base model, including better graphics and performance, more storage, improved backward compatibility, and better support for virtual reality. These improvements could make the PS5 Pro an even more compelling option for gamers looking for the ultimate gaming experience. See more gaming news. Read the full article

Tips for Buying Gaming Laptops
With so many gaming laptops on the market, I thought this would be a good time to create a general gaming laptop computer guide to help some of you choose the perfect gaming laptop.
Design
The first thing to think about when buying a gaming laptop is the design. Are you going to with 15 or 17 inches? 15-inch laptops have reached a point where they are highly portable. They are light enough for you to use them every day. For example, I have two laptops here, the Razer Blade 17 below and the top one is the main gear vector. For example, the main gear vector has a lot of power in a chassis that weighs only four points one and six pounds and is lighter than the MacBook Pro. Below is the 17-inch Stealth Razer Blade Pro, which is very well built but weighs over 6 pounds. The advantage of portability is that you always have that laptop with you. The advantage of the 17-inch laptop is that it gives you more screen space, a desktop replacement, a larger chassis for better cooling, and more memory to increase the overall storage of the device. Ports would not worry me now. Most laptops have a good selection of ports.
Upgradeability
Next up is the upgradeability, and there are generally three things to upgrade on gaming laptops. Memory, RAM, and the Wi-fi card. These are important because they are the minimum requirements for your gaming laptop and allow you to upgrade your machine later. If you buy a 15-inch gaming laptop now, there are roughly two storage spaces. Sometimes you find three, but generally, the average is one or two. The 17-inch gaming laptop has 2-3 storage spaces, sometimes up to four, for example, I have a Helios 300. This is a 15-inch laptop. They decide to stick three here by sacrificing battery life. The sacrifice of battery life saved space for a 2.5-inch drive. This can be a mechanical drive or a standard SSD. If you buy the base model now, it will come with an NVME drive. But if I want to have more space later, I have two slots to two additional drives.
RAM
Next up is Ram. Most premium and mid-range laptops now have either two RAM sticks or Dual-channel memory. This is important because it improves performance. When you buy a low-cost gaming laptop, sometimes it comes with just one. If it comes with one, you'll want to buy another stick to put it in, as this will improve the performance of your laptop. Most laptops allow you to upgrade your RAM from 32 GB to 64GB.
Wi-Fi
The next thing I’m going to talk about is the wifi card. I think this is important now that Wi-Fi 6 is out now and I have updated my home to Wi-Fi 6, and I am confident it makes a huge difference in coverage and speed. Some of these gaming laptops don't have Wi-Fi 6 cards. So if you can upgrade on the go, your future Wi-Fi capabilities will be assured.
Thermal Management
The last is thermal management. This is the most important thing for your internal components. If you see a laptop with one fan, don’t buy it. Because it overheats and doesn't work as it should. If you see a gaming laptop with two fans on the other side of the laptop. It works well but warms up. Usually, you want to look for such a configuration.
There’s something better, but it’s more or less standard. You want the fans to be at opposite ends of the central heating pipes. In general, you do not want all heat pipes to be shared between the GPU and the CPU. You want some distinction, and this will give you a better chance of having better thermals.
Display
The display is also very important because you want to take advantage of the new high refresh rate displays that are available today and the Sweet Spot of 2020 is typically 144 Hertz. If you buy a 15-inch laptop with Full HD, IPS, and 144Hz, most of these mid-range or premium gaming laptops have good color descriptions, good color gamut, and most of all 144 Hertz where you want them. Now I would no longer focus on 4k games. Because ideally, you want a GPU that runs fast enough to get 144 Hertz frame rates. If you really want to game at 4K, there are some 15-inch laptops that have 4K panels but most of them only have 60 Hertz. And I feel that you will only hurt yourself if you continue like this because the gaming experience will not be the same. If you need 4K, move up to 17 inches because computers like Razer Blade Pro offer 4K at 120 Hertz. I still think that even the new NVIDIA and AMD GPUs that coming out this year are still not that important for laptops. Perhaps more on desktops, but not on laptops. The sweet spot you want to be in 2020 is 1080p and QuadHD, but unfortunately, there are not many qHD panels with high refresh rates.
Sound
Then there is the sound and I would probably pay the least attention to it since every gaming laptop you are buying is very loud. When you play, the fans kick on so that the laptop stays cool, just overwhelm the speakers of these laptops. You should focus more on buying a good gaming headset because it gives you so much more value than the speakers on these laptops.
Keyboard and Touchpads
I believe that game keyboards are one of the most important things for a gaming laptop. The hand interacts with it to move your character. Usually, you want a gaming keyboard with a good travel distance. The lowest value I want is 2mm, but ideally, you want to be at 2.5mm. Like the Razor Blade Pro 17, a beautiful laptop and my favorite 17-inch laptop, but does not have the best keyboard. Great RGB, but the keyboard shortcuts and touch experience aren’t the best. Other vendors with a SteelSeries keyboard, is a bit dated but feel tangible and have a good actuation force that works well; I feel the keys pressed while playing. I wouldn’t be worried about the touchpads because you would be using an external mouse while playing. However, if you want to do productivity work or use it at school, you want to make sure the touchpad is made of glass and it’s big enough. Ideally, you don’t want one with the real button but like one that looks a piece of glass and you also want to make sure that the touchpad is using Windows precision drivers.
GPU
So let's talk about performance, because I think most people will make the purchase decision based on it and the most important thing is the GPU for gaming. Whether you buy an i5 or the latest i7, it's all part of the GPU. I think today if you buy a gaming laptop the GTX 1660 Ti is the lowest you want. It is now the case that some cannot afford it and have to jump over a 1650. However, if you get a 1660 TI, this can guarantee that you can play most games comfortably in high settings at 1080p. It can still do VR, it'll not perform as good as an RTX card, but it can still do it. If you want to be at a nice sweet place, the RTX 2060 is more recommended, and if you want to play high-performance games, I would probably skip the RTX 2080 and chose the RTX 2070. I think it offers the best value for high gaming performance. I think I have practically completed my first laptop gaming guide. Let me know how I did it in the comments below.
If you want to buy gaming laptop under 500 dollars.

Playing with the Oculus Quest: consumer VR has arrived
I recently bought the new Oculus Quest VR headset and it’s incredibly impressive. I’m convinced that this will be the year that consumer VR goes mainstream and I suspect the Quest will be the smash hit this holiday season. The surge of new adopters will lead to more startups and investment in VR content kicking off a positive feedback loop drawing in new customers and content creators.
I’ve been playing around with VR for years and while I’ve always believed in its potential there were very real drawbacks preventing wide spread adoption:
Expensive: maybe $2,000 including the headset and a powerful computer
Poor quality, due to low resolution screens, unreliable sensors, and / or a long cord that was a tripping hazard
Onerous set-up: room-scale VR required positioning sensors around the room and dragging the controllers around the floor
The Quest overcomes most of these:
$399 starting price, same as a video game console
Decent resolution screen and great controllers
Room-scale without external sensors (there are cameras on the headset)
The experience is magical, you just put on the headset, without any cords and immediately in a rich virtual environment. The quality of the room-scale experience is phenomenally immersive and I’ve enjoyed friends and family jump in and be blown away.
While previous generations of VR felt like a cool gimmick, I anticipate using the Quest almost every day for a combination of exercise (finally fun!), entertainment experiences, and social spaces. Hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to design to VR experiences as well.
Despite loving the Quest so far, there are a few downsides:
The current content library is a little small and a bit overpriced, though I expect that to change rapidly
A lot of the UX in both the OS and apps is clunky, but I’m sure these will improve quickly
The headset is a bit heavy and uncomfortable after an hour of use
These are fairly minor quibbles, though, especially compared to past generations.
If you’ve been considering getting into VR, now’s a great time to jump in!

#Apple egpu nvidia drivers
NVIDIA released new macOS drivers for its latest Pascal-based GPUs such as the 1080 ti just this year, so we were hopeful to get the amazing GTX performance on the Mac.Īlthough fitting it into the enclosure went without a hitch, we had to "liberate" one of the power pins inside the enclosure to adequately power the GTX 1080 ti. It is widely considered the best consumer GPU for VR gaming (the GTX Titan Xp is slightly higher spec but is considered "prosumer" and considerably more expensive). We went with a top-of-the-line NVIDIA GTX 1080 ti.
#Apple egpu nvidia install
So the solution would be to install a more capable GPU into the eGPU enclosure, right? The RX 580 being on the lower end of the GPU VR performance spectrum will in many instances fall into this reprojection fallback scenario. The problem with this technology is that it introduces visual artifacts such as ghosting that can reduce the level of immersion of the VR application. It does this by doubling up the frames to the VR headset so that it appears to be running at 90 FPS. There are GPU technologies such as Valve's asynchronous reprojection that allow for a weaker GPU to "fake" 90 FPS but actually be running at only 45 FPS. Anything below will cause a sense of disconnect and make the VR user feel queasy. In VR applications, in order for a user to not feel motion sickness, it is imperative that the frames per second (FPS) of the application runs at 90 FPS. You can run VR applications on it, but in terms of frame rate, it's on the lower end of the performance charts. If you follow the GPU industry, you'd note that as far as VR goes, the RX 580 is a capable but not an awe-inspiring graphics card. Can you change the GPU to a more powerful one? Not Yet. You can get more information about what's inside the box here. It also comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter so that you can connect the HTC vie to your Mac. The eGPU dev kit comes with an AMD RX 580 with 8GB of ram and the enclosure has a single Thunderport 3 connection port. I would recommend this item to a friend! This review is from AKiTiO Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosure + AMD Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card Bundle. So with these things in mind, I tried to see what I could get away with with as little tweaking as possible, knowing that I could be completely wasting my time using the enclosure beyond the supported features outlined in Apple's release notes. I'm very pleased so far with this purchase. It was a plug and play setup and I had it up and running in about 10 mins. It did seem large at first but upon consideration, I understand that room provides future upgradability. Performance is good.many times the graphics abilities built into my Mini.
#Apple egpu nvidia mac
This was only apparent to me because I'm using it with a silent Mac Mini. The eGPU enclosure has a built-in power supply so only a standard 3-prong power cable connects the unit to power (no external large power brick.) The unit is near-silent at idle but there is a little fan hum if you listen closely.
#Apple egpu nvidia upgrade
The AKiTiO enclosure is extremely well built and provides both the power and cooling requirements for a more powerful graphics card upgrade at a later date if needed. The card must be inserted in the eGPU enclosure which is a simple plugin that requires no tools. While both units are shipped together they are in their own individual packaging.

Reviewer: HappyMac53 Location: NC Age: Over 65 Experience Level: IT Professional Owned Product: less than a month Rating: 5/5 A well built eGPU I received my AKiTiO Node Titan Thunderbolt 3 eGPU Enclosure with Radeon RX 580 GPU quickly, only a couple of days after placing my order. I bought it here because everything I have bought from OWC over the years has been 100% compatible with any Mac I have used it for. The good part is I am getting 60fps in World of Warcraft. My unit is connected to a Mac mini which I do power off and I didn't want the eGPU on 24/7. The power switch is a tad confusing, in that obviously it needs to be on for the unit to work, but you also have to turn it off when you turn off the connected computer, or the fans in the eGPU run constantly. With one set, the fans on my GPU would never turn on, with the other, the fans worked fine. One set worked and the other did not, no clue why. The only thing that caused me pause was the additional power cables there are 2 sets of cables: two 2 prong and two 4 prong, for a 6 prong plug on the GPU. Fortunately it is really easy to install a GPU in this device. The instructions are almost completely useless. The included TB3 cable is pretty short so this also limits where you put the unit. I was going to put it on my desk but ended up putting it on the floor under my desk which works fine. Not really a problem, but it's huge: maybe 12 inches long, 10 inches high and about 6 inched wide. Rating: 4/5 My first eGPU DecemSeems to be a good product with a couple issues. The Oculus Quest 2 Is Great, and It’s the Future of VR
Wirestock Creators/Shutterstock.com
The Oculus Quest 2 represents a major shift not just for Oculus, but for VR as a whole. Compact, affordable, and almost infinitely versatile, this is the template for the future of VR. One day we’ll remember it started here.
A Crash Course on Quest
In case you’ve never heard of the Oculus Quest 2, it’s the latest in a series of standalone VR headsets. “Standalone” means that, like a video games console or PC, you only need to buy the headset to start using the software. Inside the Quest 2 is an entire mobile computer as well as a digital storefront with games and apps.
The Quest headsets are battery-powered and don’t need external motion trackers, so you can take them anywhere with you. Best of all, if you have a VR-capable PC, you can use a Quest headset as a tethered PC VR headset, too. You can even play PC VR games wirelessly.
Versatility Is the Key
Sydney Butler
The Quest 2 is incredibly versatile, and that’s the main reason we think it’s the future of VR. You only need to buy this one VR headset and you get access to almost every form of VR. Whether you want to play high-end PC VR games, use VR at room-scale, seated, or play on the bus (in front of bemused commuters), you can.
Like a tablet or laptop, you can throw a Quest 2 in a bag and take it with you. (You probably want to buy tthe official carrying case before you do that, of course.)
The greatest feat Oculus pulled off with the Quest is the removal of friction between wanting to access VR and being in VR. There’s nothing to set up, at least not after the initial, well, setup. Simply put the headset on and you’re back in the action. VR that you can just step into at any moment is crucial for widespread adoption of the technology. The Quest 2 has already crossed a crucial threshold in this area.
The Quest’s Price Is Right
The Quest 2 Purchase Page
A base model 128GB Quest 2 will set you back $299. While that’s not a small amount of money, it’s definitely in the same ballpark as the Nintendo Switch or Xbox Series S. It’s also quite a lot cheaper than premium PC VR headsets such as the Valve Index or HP Reverb G2. While it’s only a third of a Valve Index’s price, the Index isn’t three times better. You’re getting 80% of the premium PC VR experience at only 30% of the price. It’s hard to believe that Oculus is making any money on the hardware at this price, but it’s a fantastic deal for users and opens up the way for mass adoption of the technology.
Best Standalone VR Headset
Oculus Quest 2 128GB
The Quest 2 is the only real choice in standalone VR right now, so it’s a good thing it’s also the best option. Ultimate versatility combined with a great entry price.
It’s a Gateway to Mixed Reality
While the Quest 2 wasn’t designed as a proper mixed reality device, Oculus has continued the tradition of the original Quest by finding new ways to repurpose the hardware of the headset to do new things. It started with their attempts at turning the first Quest into a PC VR headset using a USB cable and that was so successful it killed off every other Oculus headset, altering the entire course of the company’s product range. Oculus also figured to how to use the onboard tracking cameras to track bare hands, without controllers. This allows for a whole new type of VR experience and interactivity level.
Lately, the company has been experimenting with basic mixed reality features. The tracking cameras can only reproduce black and white footage, that’s enough to create a few cool use cases. For example, the Quest headsets can now recognize your desk, sofa, or computer keyboard and mix them in with the VR visuals. This lets you interact with real-world objects easily and makes VR productivity applications more practical.
The future of VR is probably “extended reality”, where you can go from full virtual reality, through mixed reality, all the way to real reality at will. All using a single headset. The Quest 2 isn’t there yet, but it’s shaping up to be the mainstream entry point for extended reality. We expect some future Quest successor to have cameras that also take full-color, stereoscopic mixed reality into account.
The Quest Pro and the Future of VR
Speaking of VR’s future, there are persistent rumors of a Quest Pro on the way, although we don’t know much about it other than it’s a separate device from a purported Quest 3. Microsoft has somewhat eased off the gas when it comes to their enterprise-focused Windows Mixed Reality platform and we can imagine that Oculus may want to move into the professional space with a more business-focused Quest.
As for the future of the consumer Quest line, the trend will likely be towards smaller and lighter headsets. Possibly using micro-OLED panels, which may make it possible for VR headsets that are more like ski-goggled than diving masks. Micro-OLED technology is a hot topic in VR and even the rumored Apple VR headset is thought to use it.
Whoever ends up cracking the mainstream VR market, we suspect that product will have more in common with the Quest than the Oculus Rift. Indeed, Valve’s Index successor might turn out to be a standalone headset too. Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.
The Quest 2 Is Not Perfect
The Quest 2 is a great device, and we really do see it breaking new ground for what VR will be going forward—but that doesnt mean it’s the perfect product today.
You can argue that the Oculus Quest 2 is a step back in some ways compared to the Oculus Quest 1, of course. We wish it didn’t require a Facebook account, too.
The Quest 2 has plenty of room for improvement, but it’s hard to recommend any other headset to the average person who wants to get into virtual reality today. If you don’t have a VR headset yet, this is the most compelling one to buy—unless you have a high-end VR-ready PC and you’re willing to spend a lot more money on a VR headset.
While it’s not the most premium headset, it’s packed with innovative software ideas (such as hand-tracking and inside-out motion tracking) and potent hardware for standalone VR experiences. Future versions of the Quest will of course iron out any remaining rough edges, but the Quest 2 is eminently a proper consumer product, ready for mainstream adoption.
