The REAL origin story of Graham and the Worry Dolls

It was 2019, and I was going to therapy for anxiety. I don’t mention this part of my life much but that’s where it all started, so here we go. (This is also a story of how my therapist was *really* smart )

I was in a session and my therapist, since she knew I liked animals, mentioned that there was a technique where you visualize your anxiety as an animal and then you can either get a figurine or plushie of this animal and “talk to it” when you’re feeling amped up.

So, if you felt like your anxiety was an elephant sitting on your chest - you’d get a little elephant doll, put it on a shelf and name it Peanuts. Then whenever you’re feeling bad, you’d look at Peanuts and say, “it’s okay, Peanuts, I don’t need you right now. You can stay on the shelf” or, “that’s enough, Peanuts, stop acting up”

She asked me if I knew what animal my anxiety was.

I did. Also, I was a bit of a dick - being that I’m a cynical New Englander who was really sleep deprived since my dog was battling cancer at the time and needed to wake up every 90 mins with side effects from chemo.

I’ve had *multiple* dreams where my anxiety is like a black cloud, totally amorphous and it swirls around me. The only solid part of it is gleaming white predatory teeth.

I told her about my dreams, a bit too cocky for my own good, thinking, “Try that on for size, you and our elephant named, Peanuts”

…and I got my ass humbled.

Without skipping a beat, she was like, “Well, you're a creature designer, right? Can you make it solid and tiny in your head?”

…and I was like, “OMFG…I COULD! And that might WORK?!”

I went home and sketched what that thing would look like. I still have the sketches.

Coincidentally, this session perfectly lined up with my desire to start making resin kits and figures of my creatures for my business.

I had this little chonky critter that was very much so on brand and personal to me - why not use that design to learn about 3d printing, molding, and casting?

So that’s just what I did, and the 1st Worries appeared in Feb 2020. I took them to a show and told people about them. (Not all of it - mostly what they stood for and how they worked. They are, simply, a more toothy version of Peanuts, and work the same way)

I was shocked at how well received they were. People held them and cried. People bought them for therapy sessions. People petted them like a real, little animal. Some people named them right away and some said they needed time.

I realized that making the dolls was actually doing legit good. I mean, no one ever held one of my prints with so much connection and emotion. No one ever bought a playmat and said they were going to use it to help their formerly abused adopted kid work through their troubles.

…and this is why I’m still making the Worry doll figures.

Now here’s where Astra Fauna comes in. I knew I wanted to tell the worry doll story, but I didn’t really want to tell the one I’m telling you now. I wanted to make it, well, scifi and fictional.

So I invented Umaii and Graham.

I wanted to show the connection people have with their anxieties, and how they deal with them.

I wanted to talk about how it can feel to do things despite them.

And lastly, I wanted to make something I wished I had - as a 9 year old kid, who couldn’t breathe all of sudden, because I had a math test that day. And for all the years after it, when it didn't go away.

'we protect each other' .... that's right, they're a team. no trailblazer can go without another, for how else would one experience taste of adventure without companionship? such was a hard lesson sayu needed to learn, as well, and even though time would tell whether there'll be improvements or not, she was glad to know everyone's continued cooperation wouldn't waver. it only solidified her own goals and aspirations - spread her wings and sing out for those who are too afraid to let their own voices.

she turns to smile and nod at welt, understanding the elder's warnings very clearly. there can't be an expedition without welt expressing his concern to others ... sometimes, sayu wondered if the older trailblazer realized how fatherly he sounded. regardless, she took welt's words to heart and ventured to the planet alongside caelus. first few minutes were spent on sayu looking around, awe painted across her face. such beautiful, grandiose trees...the halovian trailblazer almost forgot nature's scent after spending too long in penacony's dreamscape.

she's taken off guard by caelus bolting off - clearly far more amused by the trees - and quickly follows after. ❛ ah - caelus, wait! mr. yang said we shouldn't separate ... ! ❜ alas, what expedition would this be without curiosity getting the better of you? with a soft sigh, sayu amps up her sprinting until she's next to caelus, amethyst eyes looking over at him. ❛ hey...how about a race? loser has to buy dinner tonight~ ❜ surely, there's no harm in having little fun while exploring, right?

━━   ❝   𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐰𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.   ❞  Caelus said with a smile wrapping an arm over her shoulder. Welt was at the very least happy the youngest can at least joke around, things were slowly returning to the semblance of normal as it once were upon the express. 

“Very well, I will count on the both of you, to remain vigilant but also safe. Above all else exercise restraint.” Welt spoke, his worry could be heard through his very own warning and advice. So Caelus did not even joke, he simply gave his senior a smile and a nod of his head before hopping off the express and skipping the steps. Everything on this planet was..bigger than he’s ever used to seeing. Trees that looked great and tall from afar stretched into the skies like towers. It was enough to impress the trailblazer.

He promised Welt he would be extremely cautious but there was definitely nothing wrong with scaling that very tall tree. “Come on.” He spoke to his beloved and ran forward. The closest tree seemed quite the distance away but it should be a relatively short trip with a sprint.

you may already know this romanian scientist as the subject of this popular and famous photo, the first-ever photograph taken underwater, with an exposure time of 30 minutes:

it was taken in 1899 at the oceanographic laboratory in banyuls-sur-mer, france, where racovitza was working at the time in his capacity as a pioneering marine biologist.

however, a mere year prior, racovitza had been suffering through a harsh antarctic winter as a member of the scientific staff on board the belgica, the ice-locked ship of the belgian antarctic expedition.

(for more on this expedition i am beseeching you to read MADHOUSE AT THE END OF THE EARTH which you can find at your library probably or on various illicit webbed sites as well as bookstores!!!)

but the basic summary is, raco (as he was known) was one of the first men hired onto the expedition by leader adrien de gerlache, who was essentially a trust fund kid with a lifelong obsession with ships, sailing, and exploration. which was kind of unfortunate for someone from belgium, a country with little coastline to speak of and a navy that was mainly for show. this was the late 19th century and most belgians were hella amped re doing atrocities in the congo but no, not good old adrien. instead his heart was fixed on making belgium a name to be reckoned with in the world of polar exploration. cue laugh track

anyway raco came along for the ride, he was also from a rich family so it helped that he offered to serve without pay. also look at him. you would want him on your ship. you would want him, like, in general. i certainly do. he's like if the man on the pringles can exuded unbearable erotic energy.

raco's official duties on the expedition included collecting and analyzing zoological and botanic samples from the sea, ice, and land; conducting meteorological readings; documenting the wildlife and landscape; and all sorts of other vital scientific tasks. and being cute.

however his most important job on the expedition by far was probably that of resident cartoonist:

Another beloved monotony-breaking ritual was the presentation of Racovitza’s daily cartoon. In addition to his skill at anatomical drawing, the zoologist was a scathing caricaturist with an eastern European fondness for the absurd and a scatological streak. Though bawdy and puerile, Racovitza’s pencil sketches were an unfiltered take on life aboard the Belgica, a chronicle of the men’s frustrations and inside jokes.

listen. when julian said these cartoons were bawdy i was like yeah sure okay. but my god, the man did not hold back. he was KINKY. he was obsessed with butts in particular, drawing the ass of his scientific colleague henryk arctowski over and over, including comparisons to the flat backside of lieutenant danco:

there were also cartoons dealing with shitting blood, watching women piss, and naked boxing. you can literally look at them all yourself although i will say they're about 1000x funnier if you know the people involved so it's a nice treat after you finish reading madhouse. but here's another favorite demonstrating the harsh realities of an icebound ship ("promenade in the caca avenue"):

anyway while the life-threatening chaos of this frathouse-esque expedition was going on around him, and cook and amundsen were off somewhere staring into each other's eyes like in the "is this allowed!?!" vine, raco continued doing important scientific work, pranking the hell out of his shipmates, and also being adorable.

eventually the expedition freed themselves from the ice and returned home. raco resumed his research career, working with the other members of the expedition to compile and publish the results of their findings, and eventually rising in the ranks of the scientific establishment of europe.

basically what i love about raco and what brings me joy every day to contemplate is that he was clearly an enormous goof with a wide variety of deranged fetishes, but also a brilliant and hard-working scientist who founded an entirely new scientific field (biospeleogy, the study of cave organisms) and grew up to be a hot dad, the most badass looking grandpa, and ended his life as one of the most respected and renowned scientists in all of romanian history. he's on stamps!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes i reflect on how he seems to be a man before his time, but also i guess i am grateful he was born in the 1800s and not the 80s because i think if he had access to the internet he definitely would've been a chronic shitposter and not got nearly as much important science done.

Reverse-Outlining Revision Method with Plottr

So in my editing guide, I give a step-by-step method for structural editing that I find really useful, and I wanted to do a visual follow-up to kind of show what that process looks like. I’m using Plottr for this, because I was gifted a copy of the software in exchange for them using my horror-writing beat-sheet as one of the templates, but you could just as easily do this with Scrivener, scrap paper, or any other organizational system you like. 

Whether you’re a fellow pantser who struggles with story structure (hi!) or you’re an outliner who needs to make sure your draft matches up to your vision (or the second draft has a good structure), this will work for you! 

Step One: Write a one-sentence log-line of the story + jot down the major themes 

There’s space for this in Plottr. I’m doing Neverest.

Premise: A woman’s search for her missing husband’s body on Mount Everest sends her into the grip of ancient forces that don’t want her to leave. 

Themes: Putting your name on something doesn't make it yours; colonialism and the urge to conquer and codify; relationships as a form of control and change vs understanding

You’ll also want to write a one-page overview summary of the story, similar to what you’d put in a query letter. Here’s mine: 

One year ago, Sean Miller -- journalist and mountain climbing enthusiast -- reached the summit of Mt. Everest, and was never seen again. Unable to move on without knowing the truth of what happened, his wife Carrie flies to Nepal to meet with Sean’s best friend and former climbing partner, Tom. They assemble a small crew and begin an expedition up the peak in search of Sean’s body and a better understanding of what might have happened in his final days.

Guided by a travel journal left behind from her husband's expedition, Carrie ventures into the frozen, open-air graveyard of the world's tallest peak. But as Sean’s diary and Carrie’s experiences reveal, climbing the mountain is more than a test of endurance; it’s a battle of wills with an ancient and hostile force protecting the mountain — and the dead do not rest easy at the summit.

Doing this helps you to identify the core elements of your story -- the characters, the conflict, and the stakes. You should be able to answer the questions: who is the main character, what do they want, what’s stopping them, what happens if they succeed/fail. 

In this case: 

The main character is Carrie, the wife of a journalist who disappeared while summiting Mt. Everest (character) 

She wants to find his body and get closure about his death/understand how and why he died (what does she want)

But there are supernatural forces at work that led to his death and now have the same in store for her (conflict/stakes) 

Step Two: List out every scene in the book 

Plottr is an outlining software, so it makes this step really easy (and conveniently color-codes things for me at the same time!). There are multiple views this can take, but this one screenshots well so I used this one for the example. 

Basically what you want to do is write down everything that happens, scene by scene. You can color-code them however you want -- in my case, I have three narrative threads, so I made a timeline for each one. Then I just mapped out all the scenes -- across 24 chapters, each dot is a scene, and you can see that some chapters have multiple scenes and also that the primary and secondary plot alternate chapters. 

When you look at it this way, you can tell really clearly that the tertiary plot needs some work -- it’s only there for four scenes in the first third of the story. I either need to cut it completely and incorporate any essential information into the other plots, or I need to expand it. 

In this particular case, I decided to expand because 1.) my word count is low, and I’d like to fill in more story and 2.) a big theme I want to explore in the story is what it’s like to love someone who’s deeply passionate about something you don’t understand -- so this tertiary plot is a great place to explore that and fill in more characterization that should add some depth to the primary and secondary stories. 

I can also see at a glance that I have a variable number of scenes in each chapter. Sometimes that makes sense (the green ones are diary entries, so it’s logical that one chapter = one entry) but sometimes it hints that those chapters could be a little thin and need more content. If I’m looking to add additional conflict, I should do it in those blue chapters that only have one dot as opposed to the ones with multiple dots! 

Step Three: Look at the overall shape and adjust for pacing and genre

Plottr has a bunch of templates pre-loaded into it that make this easy, but you can also just google various different story structures and beat sheets such as Save the Cat or the 3 Act Structure etc. But just look at the overall map of story beats and see how they line up with the outline you’ve made: 

This is just a small snapshot view, but you get the idea -- when you look at the scenes side-by-side with the beat sheet, you can see some things. For example, it sure would make more sense if the flashback scene where Carrie decides to embark on this journey got its own chapter and lined up better with the “putting the players in action” plot point rather than being smooshed into the first chapter with the introduction to the world! The fact that I’ve got it smashed into that first chapter is probably a sign that my opening scenes/chapter itself is a bit thin and needs to be fleshed out a little more. 

Step Four: Figure out what you need to adjust and make the changes accordingly 

So after looking at everything mapped out this way, I’ve got a little list of things I need to do: 

Come up with more scenes for that red plotline

Rearrange some things a little bit to better fit the structure I want

Figure out some more blue scenes to fill in the gaps caused by rearranging things and smooth over the pacing/amp up the conflict/alleviate some areas where critique partners hae expressed confusion

I also moved around the categories in Plottr (you can drag-and-drop storylines and chapters) to make it a bit easier to see everything all at once. Basically you can edit the story’s outline first, to save you the confusion of manually moving around whole paragraphs/chapters in your actual story document. 

Now, I haven’t finished that step yet for this particular project (there’s a lot of brainstorming to do re: filling in those gaps!) BUT I did want to skip ahead to show you the next step (let’s pretend this is a TV cooking show where the finished pie is pulled right out of the oven). 

Step Five: Re-Type everything based on your new scene list

This is a really neat thing about Plottr. If you swap from the “Timeline” view to the “Outline” view, you get these editable text windows where you can type whatever you want, and it’ll keep it organized into chapters and scenes. 

So, just pull up your original in one window, and the Plottr screen (or other outlining/drafting device) in another. Dual monitors are great for this but we make due. Now, retype the original document into the new document, making changes as you go to fit the new outline and also cleaning up language and so forth as you go. For example, this time around I’ll be changing Carrie’s blue timeline scenes to present-tense instead of past, so I’ll rewrite them in present tense in the new window. 

Once all that is said and done, in Plottr you can export the file directly into Scrivener or Word. (If you’re not using Plottr, you’ll have to figure out for your own self how to transfer the final product into a final document -- I trust you can sort through that). From there you’ve got a fresh clean copy of a second draft all ready to go for the final copy-edit/proofread/polish/formatting and then you’re off to the races!

-seedot leaves home and evolves into nuzleaf (around 18 yrs old equivalent). home is where he picked up his southern mannerisms and upbringing, which stick to him like glue despite the extensive travels and experiences he accumulates through his life

-spends ~15 years travelling the world

-encounters dark matter in an evil forest. details unclear but it’s because he opted to delve deeper into what was already a pretty ill-advised exploration to begin with

-agrees to partnership (read: yields to possession) with dark matter, having been promised power, influence, and respect, and they begin to travel the world with nuzleaf as a vessel

-dm already has a few full vessels, including yveltal, but dm and nuzleaf vibe the best. nuzleaf is given responsibility for many of dm's errands

-they encounter and recruit the beheeyem at some point, who become favored vessels due to their preexisting teamwork and psychic power. they were also a voluntary possession, although theyre not as ambitious. they prioritize the safety of their trio

-when a vessel is possessed by dm, they experience the voidlands for themselves--not sent there through being turned to stone, but thru visions such as nightmares, etc. dm uses this as leverage, to threaten its vessels with what will happen if they step out of line, but also to just. make em upset. fuel the stone-making rampage with bad vibes

-anyways. dm at this point is aware of mew having been reborn ~10 years ago, and with more of its plans coming into place, it wants to start tracking down the child heroes. it has nothing on the status of the human hero at this point

-nuzleaf tracks mew to serene village relatively quickly, but doesnt make his presence known

-having ‘secured’ mew’s location, the vessels of dm begin a globetrotting search for the human child, who they assume to be reincarnated as an infant the same way mew was

-dm eventually connects the dots and figures if mew ~just happened~ to wind up next to the sacred spring, the human likely will as well

-about 2 years have passed since dm came into the picture? it has also been recruiting a few more vessels during this time

-nuzleaf returns to serene village and sets up shop, establishing his presence as a villager, while the beheeyem orbit nearby, selecting a mountain cave to settle in (much like their old home)

-nuzleaf and the beheeyem begin to roll out on extensive forays, scouting the world around serene village for signs of the human hero

-it is on one of these scouting trips that they encounter a young pokemon, far from civilization and indeed any other living creatures, close to a small waterfall

-the human child has only partial amnesia at the time, and knows about the purpose to their reincarnation--they have only been recently recreated as a pokemon, at the top of a nearby mountain, and experienced no childhood like mew did. they retain much knowledge and maturity from their past life

-when approached by nuzleaf and co, they all kind of recognize one another--nuzleaf knows this is their missing puzzle piece, and the human can pretty quickly attribute the group’s suspicious behavior to dark matter

-dm/nuzleaf's intentions are to overpower the hero and schlep them up to revelation mountain asap, securing the goods for a fast and hard takeover. the dm gang and hero get into a scuffle over this

-beheeyem's psychic blast renders the hero truly amnesiac this time (although their personality remains largely untouched)

-nuzleaf's mind has been largely overshadowed by dm through this entire process, but upon the beheeyem’s report of amnesia, a moment of "good" nuzleaf shines through, and he decides to take the hero under his wing instead. dm is amenable to this plan, because drawing out its takeover over a length of time will generate more negative emotion from across the world, adding to its collective power

-end scene. script continues on as usual, nuzleaf gets left by dm to largely keep living pretty normally. nuzleaf is willfully ignorant of his growing attachment to the child, believing he is just secure in the knowledge on having an important asset in hand (when in fact hes happy to have this new family member. hes Soft)

-sometimes dm's presence grows heavy in his mind, affecting his mood and opinion of the child sourly (not that they ever know, he is very good at hiding this). "good” nuzleaf is largely content with this lifestyle however

-although hero and partner's departure to lively town was not met with utmost delight on his part, nuzleaf ultimately welcomed their absence as it made his errands for dm MUCH easier. less sneaking around to do, and allowed him to lay a trap at revelation mountain

-at this stage, different vessels were tending to turning to stone various pokemon across the world, especially the big hundos like legendaries (latias and latios, for instance, were attacked by fast-flying vessels). nuzleaf is set on the very precise tasks of setting up their fall guy(s) and ensuring hero stays within reach

-although nuzleaf orchestrated that krookodile's rampage to serene village would attract the attention of the expedition society, it was a coincidence that hero/partner were on the pursuit team. he intended to run to lively town and fetch them himself if necessary, crying havoc

-after the pursuit team get stone'd, nuzleaf and yveltal storm serene village, before collecting the beheeyem and moving on to lively town. they continue to work and hit established communities while hero and partner are in the voidlands, although yveltal takes its leave sometime during that to start attacking more big hundos

-espurr is caught right before nuzleaf and co storm the village, hiding in the bushes atop the mountain. nuzleaf doesnt initially expect to recruit her, but dm suggested her powers might be of benefit, given that the other beheeyem might have their hands full. he doesnt have to do much threatening before espurr keys in and agrees

-espurr and the "manipulation" of the expedition society are nuzleaf's jurisdiction as well, assisted by the beheeyem

-its during this period that the turncoat beheeyem starts showing hesitation. nuzleaf is on it like a fly on doodoo but obv hides it perfectly. starts laying the prehistoric ruins trap

-its not just dm speaking when they spring the prehistoric ruins trap--nuzleaf is exposing how he’s the kind of person who might agree to a partnership with dark matter in the first place. that said, hes not intrinsically THAT mean, and his evil factor is REALLY amped up by the possession. but its still largely nuzleaf in the driver’s seat at this point

-again back to the script. dm tosses its vessels around where they need to be, up until it fully takes over their minds and has them fight hero and co. after their defeat, dm is (temporarily) kicked out of their brains. its PIIIISSED about this and whisks the vessels into the tree of life for what essentially will be a slow and painful death, which is of course subverted by the heroes

-yveltal warps the vessel crew to the bottom of the tree of life, seeking oxygen, where the group stops to decide whether to take action or just give up. most are inclined to the latter, but nuzleaf is determined to go back and help the heroes until dm stops him directly. the others come around to his point of view, and yveltal returns them to the top of the tree

-with dm fully out of his mind now, nuzleaf is real sorry :( distracting the enemy from his kid for even one moment was worth a thousand ends in the voidlands to him

-after dm’s defeat, nuzleaf and co find themselves returning to consciousness in the forest, not far from where the heroes are similarly recovering. before they can get their bearings, arceus slips quietly out of the woods, escorting yveltal away with it for a Very Long Talk. the rest of the crew are scared out of their minds, but in an act of forgiveness, arceus refrains from passing Judgement on them

-with yveltal indisposed, the vessels are again left to follow nuzleaf’s guidance. they find the restored turncoat beheeyem and make up with one another, and decide to quietly withdraw and see what they can do to make up for their sins

-after apologizing to serene village and associated victims, nuzleaf roughs it in the wilderness for a bit, declining the beheeyem’s invitation to their mountain cave. he wants some time to himself (in fact the first he’s had since he encountered dm in the woods, so long ago). he orbits close to the village, however, seeking a glimpse of the hero

-after learning of the partner/mew’s disappearance through the serene village grapevine, nuzleaf vows to do whatever is necessary to help his kid, however he can. the beheeyem are of a similar mind. they get in touch with the expedition society asap

-follow script, etc etc. nuzleaf’s natural stealthiness is of benefit when it becomes necessary to track the hero’s movements

-after the partner is restored, the beheeyem return to their mountain home again, deciding amongst themselves what their next move will be. nuzleaf tries to leave serene village for good, having done his bit, and wanting to spare the hero any further angst regarding his presence. however, the hero stops him and convinces him to stay and recreate their little family home, which nuzleaf accepts

-partner and the hero return to the expedition society for a couple of years, conducting explorations and making frequent visits home. mawile comes up with the idea to plant an expedition society branch on revelation mountain, after she discovers that not only has the sacred spring not lost its power, but that the luminous water there is slowly returning. the site is marked a protected location, and the child heroes are put in charge of the new branch

-the beheeyem, the other village children, and the heroes’ parents are among those recruited to the new branch. the beheeyem handle most of the admin work, and the schoolchildren embark on a variety of explorations as they grow up, travelling between the city and village locations

-hero and partner more often than not form an exploration team with their dads, making a four-person expedition group that goes out for long expeditions. the kids are able to experience more quality time with their parents, carracosta can spend time protecting his child, and nuzleaf can sate his wanderlust without abandoning the ones he loves. its a solution that keeps everybody happy

-and they all live happily ever after :)

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky Professor Oak’s Challenge Part 11

Chapter 10 We can recruit things again.

Things have returned to normal after the expedition. Before we can begin our day, a pokemon named Dusknoir visits the guild.

Dusknoir is apparently a world famous explorer who is known for his vast knowledge. He came to hear about how the expedition went. Wigglytuff tells him that we found nothing. Dusknoir says he’s going to be staying in Treasure Town for a while and we start our day.

First we head to Spinda’s Cafe. We can unlock some new dungeons through the Juice Bar and Recycling Shop.

Through the Juice Bar, I recruit Shuckle,

unlock Serenity River,

recruit Shroomish,

recruit Dunsparce,

and unlock Lush Prairie.

I unlock Landslide Cave after 3 recycles,

Tiny Meadow after 25,

and Oran Forest after 60.

Next, we head to Craggy Coast. In Craggy Coast, I recruit

Sealeo,

Spheal,

Dratini,

blue Gastrodon,

Krabby,

and Wingull.

That night, Team Skull talks about how frustrated they are about Wigglytuff knocking them out at the expedition. They want revenge but know they’re no match for Wigglytuff. Instead, they decide to get revenge on Team Oak instead.

The next day, Chatot tells us to go ask the Kecleon brothers if they plan to stock Perfect Apples. 

We head to the shop and when we get there, Dusknoir is talking to Kecleon. Fig asks about the Perfect Apples and Kecleon tells him they have no plans to stock them.

Before we can leave, Marill and Azurill rush by. Someone told them they saw their lost item, a Water Float, on the beach so their rushing down to get it. Team Skull is eavesdropping nearby. Marill and Azurill leave and we head back to the guild to talk to Chatot.

Next we head to Mt. Horn.

At dinner, Chatot tells us that another Time Gear has been stolen. Luckily it wasn’t the Time Gear from Fogbound Lake but he reminds us to not tell anyone about it.

That night, we see the Time Gear Thief steal the Time Gear from Uxie!

That morning, we get some visitors.

It’s Marill and Azurill. They tell us that when they went down to the beach to find their Water Float, they found this note instead. Fig reads the note.

It’s a ransom note telling them that their Water Float is in Amp Plains. We agree to go to Amp Plains to find the Water Float.

However, we’re not going there yet. There are still things we need to do.

I head to Foggy Forest and recruit Buneary,

Stantler,

Breloom,

Skiploom,

Pinsir,

Cherubi,

Noctowl,

Pachirisu,

Smeargle,

Hoothoot,

and Zigzagoon.

Next is Landslide Cave. I recruit Dustox,

Granbull,

trash Wormadam,

I recruited Staravia from Tiny Meadow.

From Oran Forest, I recruit Wurmple,

and trash Burmy.

From Lush Prairie, I recruit Silcoon,

Exeggcute,

plant Burmy,

and Yanma.

I recruit Masquerain from Serenity River.

Another thing that unlocks after the expedition is Chansey’s Daycare which means we can now get eggs. When you get an egg from a mission, the pokemon that hatches will be the base form of the pokemon found on the mission floor. Eggs hatch after between 5-7 days has passed. The quickest way to hatch eggs is to go into the Marowak Dojo and give up in a training dungeon. This adds a day to your egg. Do this a few times and then talk to Chansey to hatch the egg. The pokemon that hatches is determined when you get the egg so you have to save before you complete the mission and reset from there to get a different pokemon. I wondermailed in the missions and started.

From Beach Cave, I hatched a blue Shellos,

Corsola,

and Kabuto.

From Mt. Bristle, I hatched Nidoran male,

and Nidoran female.

From Landslide Cave, I hatched Snubbull,

and Venonat.

So I don’t know how many of you are aware of this, but if you go back and talk to Chatot right before you go on the Amp Plains mission, he has some dialogue where he gets mad at you for asking to take a break from regular guild work. After playing through the Bidoof special episode, it occurs to me that he is probably flashing back to Bidoof asking for time off, and all the chaos and danger that he was put through in Star Cave. Sure, it all ended up fine, but mostly because Chatot actually followed through on his concern and got the others involved.

This is the only real reason I can think of for why he would be so reluctant to give the Hero and Partner time off. It can’t be the Perfect Apple thing, either, because he already acknowledged that the duo were good at exploring considering the recent expedition, and it isn’t like the time off would have had anything to do with Perfect Apple acquisition anyways. Furthermore, he agreed to give Bidoof that time off in his special episode when he was arguably behind the hero and partner’s current level, and where he’d made a more direct mistake in actually eating all the Perfect Apples in storage himself, rather than merely failing at getting more from an outside source.

So in hindsight, it’s actually really sweet that Chatot cares enough that he was making those parallels and worrying about stuff like that.

Now, why the hero and partner didn’t just tell him about the situation--that they were trying to help Marill and Azurill--rather than prefacing it by asking for time off is another question entirely (because I feel like he would have been far more amenable to the request if they had), but it just goes to highlight my headcanon for how young the hero and partner actually are in comparison to everyone else.
