THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT
Total Hip Replacement is the second most common Joint replacement surgeries. It is performed on arthritic, painful or necrossed hip joint. There are numerous varieties of prostheses available in the market- metallic, plastic or ceramic. Cemented prosthesis were used earlier. Joint replacement surgeries add a lot of quality to a patient's life who has been suffering from pain and is not getting relief from not non- surgical treatment approaches like medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle alterations. With advancement of science, the new joints mimic movement of normal, healthy joints very well.
Due to high success rate and good prognosis, total hip replacement surgery has been on the rise in the last few years..
Read more to acquaint yourself with all aspects of total hip replacement surgery.
TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT/ TOTAL HIP ARTHROPLASTY/ THR
WHAT IS HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Hip replacement or hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to alleviate excruciating hip pain. In THR, the surgeon replaces parts of the hip joint with artificial implants. The hip joint consists of a ball (at the top of the femur/ thigh bone and a socket (in the pelvis/ the hip bone). Total Hip replacement surgery includes replacement of one or both parts to allow the patient to lead a good quality life and resume activities of daily living with minimal pain.
THR is done in patients suffering from conditions like Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Perthes Disease or Avascular Necrosis, major hip fractures and tumours in the hip joint.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Learn about the procedure.
Learn about the type of prosthesis to choose from, and what to expect during recovery.
Select a surgeon and hospital.
Consider the impact of surgery on your work.
Surgery and recovery might keep you away from the workplace for weeks, plan accordingly and equip yourself to work from home if possible.
Get in shape.
Losing some extra weight if one is overweight goes a long way and gaining muscle strength before going under the knife considerably reduces your recovery time.
Consult a physiotherapist.
A right exercise regime designed by a qualified and experienced Physiotherapist will ensure success of the THR and reduce recovery time.
Practice walking with crutches and walkers for easy acclimatisation.
Discuss with family and friends for post- op support.
Rearrange your home.
Remove or reposition furniture in your house so that you can move around easily, remove rugs and carpets to avoid stumbling on them. Add railing in the bathroom.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Total hip replacement surgery lasts for about two hours. A partial hip replacement might require a little less time, and a bilateral hip replacement might take even longer.
One might experience considerable post- op pain after hip replacement which is managed by medicines and Physiotherapy.
Recovery after total hip replacement starts right away. Patients are encouraged and instructed to get up and move around as soon as possible after surgery under Physiotherapist’s supervision.
Patients will need physical therapy for several weeks until they regain muscle strength, good range of motion, a good balance and a healthy gait.
HOW SOON CAN YOU WALK AFTER A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT?
Doctors advise hip replacement patients to start walking within the same day or next day of surgery.
Patients with good outcomes resume their normal routine activities within the first 3 to 6 weeks post surgery. Physiotherapists design a day by day treatment plan and prescribe home exercise plan after considerable recovery.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS AFTER HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
Excessive bleeding during the surgery.
Infection in the joint or incision site.
Blood clots in the legs or lungs.
Leg length discrepancy.
Nerve injury.
Fracture.
Continued pain or stiffness.
Dislocation.
Loosening or wearing out of the prosthesis.
Unrelieved joint pain.
Heart attack
Stroke.
There may be other risks depending on the existing medical condition of the patient. Discuss at length any concerns with your doctor before the procedure.
After the surgery, notify your doctor if you notice any of the following:
High fever.
Redness, swelling, or bleeding or other drainage from the incision site.
Increased pain around the incision site.
New or increased swelling of the leg.
Chest pain
Shortness of breath
REHABILITATION AFTER THR
Rehabilitation after THR is done by following protocols specifically designed for all patients.
Some swelling and initial pain at the joint are normal after hip replacement. One can reduce the pain by following methods:
Take rest between therapy sessions.
Ice the leg and the incision site.
Take anti-inflammatory medications prescribed by your doctor.
Leg elevation above the heart level reduces the swelling.
Follow the exercise plan designed by your Physiotherapist.PRECAUTIONS AFTER THR
Patients must take precautions in order to protect their new hips. Here are some tips and precautions after THR will increase the patient’s comfort level and decrease the risk of dislocation and other injuries.
Use a walker or crutch to reduce the risk of falling. Walkers and canes also signal to strangers to be more cautious around the patient.
Address your post-op pain to have better compliance for your exercise regime.
Minimise the number of trips up and down stairs or in and out of a car.
Put essential items like the TV remote control, phone, near you.
Do not bend the hips or knees further than 90 degrees
Do not cross your legs
Do not lift the leg to put on socks.
Be regular with your physical therapy exercises to maintain muscle strength which will keep the new joint in place.

Art & Music Therapy in Aged Care: Elevating Well-Being for Seniors in Perth
As Perth’s senior community expands, there is a growing emphasis on enhancing the quality of care in aged care facilities. A prominent method gaining attention is the use of art and music therapy within care programs. These therapies provide emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits, making them invaluable tools in aged care settings. Across Perth, art and music therapy are becoming essential elements in improving the lives of residents.
The Impact of Art Therapy in Aged Care
Art therapy in Perth’s aged care facilities gives seniors a platform for creative expression, regardless of their artistic skill. It is particularly valuable for those who face communication challenges due to cognitive impairment or other health issues. Through creative activities, seniors can express emotions and experiences that may be hard to verbalise.
Key benefits of art therapy include:
Cognitive Engagement: Participating in creative activities like painting or drawing stimulates various areas of the brain, which can help in preserving cognitive functions, particularly for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Emotional Release & Stress Relief: Artistic expression can provide an outlet for feelings such as sadness, fear, or frustration, leading to a decrease in anxiety and depression, which are common in aged care.
Encouraging Socialisation: Group art activities foster connections among residents, helping to reduce isolation and loneliness.
Enhancing Motor Skills: For those with physical limitations, engaging in activities like painting or sculpting supports the development of fine motor skills, aiding physical recovery.
Many aged care centres in Perth offer art therapy programs that are specifically designed to meet the individual needs of each resident, creating personalised experiences that encourage creativity and reinforce a sense of identity.
The Benefits of Music Therapy in Aged Care
Music therapy is widely acknowledged as a beneficial approach in aged care, targeting the emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of seniors. Music serves as a meaningful form of engagement, with significant therapeutic effects.
The key advantages of music therapy include:
Memory Stimulation: Music can trigger memories, particularly for those living with dementia. Familiar songs from earlier years can improve memory recall, helping to maintain mental activity.
Improving Mood & Emotional Health: Music can soothe agitation, alleviate stress, and boost mood. Activities such as singing or playing instruments release endorphins, contributing to emotional well-being.
Supporting Physical Activity: Gentle movements to music, including simple dancing or rhythmic exercises, can enhance mobility, balance, and coordination, especially for those with physical impairments.
Building Social Connections: Group music therapy encourages social bonds among residents, providing a shared space for connection and interaction, which helps reduce feelings of isolation.
Many aged care facilities in Perth now include music therapy sessions, offering options like group sing-alongs, percussion circles, and individualised music activities tailored to each resident's preferences.
Integrating Art & Music Therapy for Holistic Care
A comprehensive approach to aged care that combines both art and music therapy can deliver a full spectrum of benefits. In Perth, integrating these therapies creates a welcoming and stimulating environment for residents, enhancing both emotional and social well-being.
These therapies not only support individual mental and emotional health but also foster community involvement and interaction. They enable seniors to communicate in alternative ways, especially when verbal communication becomes difficult, and offer opportunities for self-expression and identity reinforcement.
Conclusion
Art and music therapy are gaining recognition as crucial components of holistic care in aged care environments. These creative therapies deliver significant benefits, including cognitive stimulation, emotional support, physical rehabilitation, and improved social connections. For aged care providers in Perth, incorporating these therapies ensures that residents are not only cared for but also actively engaged and enriched through meaningful activities.
As the focus on aged care continues to grow, the inclusion of art and music therapy will remain an integral part of promoting the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of Perth’s elderly residents.

Tips to Prepare for Cupping Therapy in Perth
Cupping therapy has been growing in popularity across Perth for its numerous health benefits. This traditional practice, which has roots in ancient Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine, is now widely embraced as an effective alternative therapy. Whether you are a seasoned cupping enthusiast or a first-timer, being well-prepared can make a significant difference in your experience and the outcomes of the therapy. Here are some tips to ensure you're ready for your next cupping therapy session in Perth.
1. Understand What Cupping Therapy Entails
Before booking your cupping therapy session in Perth, it's essential to have a clear understanding of the process. Cupping therapy involves the placement of cups on the skin to create suction. This suction pulls the skin and muscles upward, improving blood flow, reducing pain, and promoting relaxation. The therapist may use either dry cupping or wet cupping (which involves a small incision in the skin). In some cases, a heated cup is used to create the suction effect. Understanding these variations will help you better communicate with your therapist and set realistic expectations.
How Does It Work?
The primary mechanism of cupping is to create negative pressure, which increases circulation and releases muscle tension. This can have a positive impact on pain, inflammation, and overall well-being. In Perth, many cupping practitioners offer both modern and traditional methods, so be sure to discuss your preferences and any concerns with them before starting the therapy.
2. Choose a Reputable Cupping Therapist in Perth
When seeking cupping therapy Perth, it’s crucial to find a qualified therapist who specializes in this treatment. Perth has numerous wellness centers, spas, and clinics that offer cupping therapy, but the quality of service may vary. Always opt for a therapist with experience and a solid reputation. Look for reviews and testimonials online, and don’t hesitate to ask for recommendations from friends or family.
Questions to Ask Your Therapist:
What training and certifications do they have in cupping therapy?
How long have they been practicing?
Can they provide a detailed explanation of the process and any potential side effects?
Choosing a reputable therapist ensures that the treatment is not only effective but also safe.
3. Hydrate and Nourish Your Body
Proper hydration is essential for maximizing the benefits of cupping therapy. Cupping promotes detoxification, and drinking plenty of water before and after your session will help flush out toxins and improve your recovery. Aim to drink at least 2 liters of water on the day of your session.
Additionally, avoid eating heavy meals or drinking alcohol before your appointment. A light, nutritious meal a few hours before your session will keep you comfortable without weighing you down. Nourishing your body ensures that the blood flow and lymphatic drainage stimulated by the cupping process are as effective as possible.
4. Wear Comfortable, Loose Clothing
On the day of your cupping therapy session, wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas being treated. Depending on where the cups will be placed, you may need to remove clothing or wear something that can be easily adjusted, such as a tank top or loose pants. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, as it may cause discomfort and hinder the effectiveness of the treatment.
5. Avoid Certain Activities Before Your Session
To get the most out of your cupping therapy session, avoid strenuous physical activities or intense workouts beforehand. Engaging in vigorous exercise can lead to muscle soreness, which may affect your comfort during the session. Additionally, steer clear of saunas, hot baths, or tanning beds before treatment, as these activities can make your skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation during cupping.
6. Communicate Any Health Concerns
Before your session, make sure to discuss any existing health conditions with your therapist. Certain medical issues may require specific adjustments to the treatment. For example, if you have a history of blood clotting disorders, are pregnant, or are on medications like blood thinners, your therapist may need to modify the therapy.
Common Health Concerns to Discuss:
Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
Allergies to certain materials used in cupping
Any recent surgeries or injuries
Effective communication will ensure that the therapy is safe and tailored to your individual needs.
7. Relax and Be Open to the Process
Cupping therapy is designed to promote relaxation and healing, so it’s essential to approach your session with an open mind. Some people experience mild discomfort during the suction process, but it should never be painful. If you feel any significant discomfort, inform your therapist immediately. Trusting the process and relaxing during the session will allow you to reap the full benefits of the treatment.
8. Post-Cupping Care: What to Do After Your Session
After your cupping session, it’s normal to have circular marks on your skin where the cups were placed. These marks are not bruises but are caused by the blood being pulled to the surface of the skin. They typically fade within a few days to a week.
Tips for Post-Cupping Care:
Continue to drink plenty of water to aid in the detoxification process.
Avoid intense physical activities for 24 hours after your session.
Stay away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures for at least 24 hours, as your skin may be more sensitive than usual.
Moisturize the treated areas with a gentle lotion or oil to soothe the skin and promote healing.
Taking these steps will help you recover quickly and maintain the benefits of the therapy.
9. Schedule Regular Sessions for Ongoing Benefits
To experience the full range of health benefits, it’s recommended to schedule regular cupping therapy sessions. Many clients in Perth opt for weekly or bi-weekly treatments, depending on their health goals. Consistency allows for improved blood circulation, muscle relaxation, and stress relief over time.
Consult with your therapist to determine the best schedule for your needs, whether you're looking to relieve chronic pain, improve athletic performance, or simply enhance your overall wellness.
Conclusion
By following these tips, you can ensure that you’re fully prepared for your next cupping therapy Perth. From choosing the right therapist to taking care of your body before and after treatment, these steps will help you get the most out of the experience. Cupping therapy can offer remarkable benefits, and with the proper preparation, you'll be well on your way to enjoying improved health and well-being.

Perthes disease, also known as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, is a childhood condition where the blood supply to the femoral head (the ball part of the hip joint) is temporarily disrupted. This interruption in blood flow can lead to the breakdown of bone cells in the femoral head, causing it to collapse and deform over time.
It typically affects children between the ages of 4 and 10 and may result in hip pain and limited mobility. Treatment often involves rest, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery to preserve hip joint function.
Yes, Perthes disease can be treated, although the specific approach depends on the severity of the condition and the child's age. Treatment aims to preserve the shape of the femoral head, maintain hip joint function, and reduce symptoms.
Common treatment options include:
Rest and activity modification: Limiting activities that put stress on the hip joint can help prevent further damage and promote healing.
Physical therapy: Exercises to improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility can be beneficial in managing symptoms and maintaining hip function.
Bracing: Some children may benefit from wearing a brace or cast to help support the hip joint and encourage proper alignment.
Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to help reduce pain and inflammation.
Surgical intervention: In more severe cases or if conservative measures fail, surgery may be necessary to realign the hip joint, remove damaged tissue, or improve blood flow to the femoral head.
The prognosis for Perthes disease varies depending on factors such as the child's age, the extent of femoral head involvement, and the effectiveness of treatment. With appropriate management, many children with Perthes disease can recover well and go on to lead active lives without significant long-term complications.

Developed by Dean Watson, this approach focuses on the relationship between cervical spine dysfunction and headache symptoms.
Physiotherapists trained in the Watson Headache® Approach use a systematic assessment process to identify the specific cervical joint or muscle involvement contributing to a patient's headaches.
