2008-2010: Sofitel Plaza Saigon – First started job in hospitality career
After graduated from University with a Bachelor degree on Hospitality management in 2008, I decided to start my career journey in hotel industry. At that time, there were only a few 5-star hotel in Ho Chi Minh city where I lived and Sofitel Plaza Saigon was one of them. Belong to Accor hotel chain, Sofitel Plaza Saigon has won numerous awards in the industry. The hotel managers approached our school for recruitment day then I applied and I was one of two students who is accepted for Receptionist position and working on Executive Lounge. After one year, I got promotion to Supervisor position and then Executive Lounger Manager within six months. Some awards I have achieved during this two years: Best employee of the year 2010, Best supervisor of the year 2009.
The first started job as Receptionist at Sofitel Saigon Plaza hotel gave me an idea what does real hospitality world look like, first approaching to the multicultural, diversity of hotel industry and what is an expatriate. Moreover, the understanding on cross-cultural management is also more clear. For example, a lot of French citizen managers (Accor brand based) are sent to Vietnam on assignment. The key of successful I has learnt at this stage was being professional, on timing and languages we speak as well as body language; always follow policies and instructions as everything was quite new to a fresh graduated student. Moreover, working hard and pay attention to detail brought me to the promotion twice during this stage. 
2010-2013: Park Hyatt Saigon – Management level begin
After two years working at Sofitel, I received a phone call from a head-hunter agency. She offered me a position Customer Service Manager at Park Hyatt Saigon, that was the best hotel in Saigon at that time. I took the offer because according to word of mouth, Park Hyatt brand is upper level of professional and I would like to growth my career further. After one year under that position, I promoted to Assistant Front Office Manager, in charge a Front Office team with ninety team members.
There were some components involved in this work to enhance my professional development that the hotel offered was their training programs, including orientation and on the job training. Range of responsibilities such as staff restoring, handling customer complaint, customer service, daily operation etc., developed my critical thinking, time and task management and decision making skills. Looking back at that time, I realised that participation in company’s activities assisted me improved the relationships with other departments in order to smooth the daily operation, like Accounting, Human Resources, Housekeeping etc.
One of the variable that moderate differences between domestic and international HRM is the attitudes of senior management can be seen clearly in my two different managers. Mr. Vincent is French, who has successful career built on domestic experience, was quite struggling dealing with employees due to lack of international perspective. While Mr. Golden, who replaced Mr. Vincent, has a strong international experience orientation from Holland, Australia, Singapore to Thailand and Vietnam. He emphasise corporate goals and objectives while Mr. Vincent tend to focus on domestic issues.
2013-2016: Emirates Airlines – Exploring the hospitality industry around the world
Passion is strongly endured inside each person and becomes a critical reason for success. My passion is clearly indicated by my career and challenges that I have experienced. I am fond of knowing more about each sector of the Hospitality industry, in which I see my future. Later on, I am still strongly passion in this career and I would like to achieve a Master degree in order to expand knowledge and career path. However, there is no institute in Vietnam have this qualification and I can't afford the school fee to study abroad. Because of my strong passion, I decided to explore myself to the world and saving for my tuition fee by being a Business Class cabin crew of Emirates Airlines for 3 years.
Working for Emirates airlines and living in Dubai for three years provided me an extraordinary experience and growth, contributed a lot to my interpersonal skills that lead to intellectual, cultural and personal development. This job gave me valuable skills, such as strengthening communication and problem-solving skills. Working with a multicultural team come from 164 nationalities have taught me to deal with different cultures. For examples, every flight I worked with different team members but I am kind of have a broad picture of people and  culture of each country, such as Japanese flights are very clean and passengers always follow rules while Japanese crew really hard working and respect their seniors.
There are plenty of  Human resources activities of cabin crew job in Dubai, such as international relocation and orientation, administrative services for expatriates. Emirates arranged immigration and travel details, providing housing, medical care etc. because 80% population of Dubai is expatriates, Dubai does not have enough worker therefore they have to recruit from oversea. Moreover, as some challenges when living in Dubai such as weather, religion, environment, legalisation, rules and law, Dubai is not attractive to expatriates, therefore Dubai based companies offer numerous of benefits and compensation in order to attract workers.
However, what Emirates and/or some companies in Dubai do not realise is that if the expatriates they send to their overseas assignments are not appropriately trained and prepared, the expatriates are more likely to experience difficulties that can have a serious impact on their activities and lead to possible failure. A major issue is that expatriates lacking appropriate cross-cultural training and preparation will not be able to adapt to a new country and working environment. In addition, this lack of acclimatisation to the new setting becomes not only detrimental to the individual, but also very costly to the company. In many cases, it can damage the company’s reputation and can undermine the future of the company in the host country and, as a result of this; those companies could potentially lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. For example, there were so many cases that employees came back to their home country very shortly after arrived Dubai, due to unable to adapt to new living conditions and it is very costly to Emirates from recruitment to relocation process. Unfortunately, there were also some suicide cases as well, most of the cases caused by depression and unadaptable to new environment. The majority of expatriates tend to live and spend time with people with a similar language and culture.
Another potential problem for expatriates are differences in interpersonal behaviour. Since there is a cultural difference between Australia (a Western society) and the UAE (a Middle Eastern society) it is very easy for misunderstandings to occur. Hence, it is easy for the behaviour of an expatriate to be unintentionally offensive. For instance, certain behaviours that are accepted in Australia, for example shaking hands when introduced to a person of the opposite gender, are unacceptable in the UAE. With the proper and up-to-date cross-cultural training, this is one of the many problems that could be avoided. Dubai is highly respect their culture and expect all expatriates to do the same. For example, during Ramadan season, majority the dining shop could not open or open in discretion, such as cover the shop by portable panels. Non-Muslim cannot eat or drink in the public space. Meanwhile in Australia or Vietnam, Muslim people need to understand that they cannot request those and they have to adapt to it.
Eventually, after 9 years chasing my passion, I am studying my Master Degree at the moment by my saving account. According to research, passion can improve work performance, increase work- engagement and assist to become a good leader. With job's promotions, career's achievements and the spirit that I have experienced, I strongly recognised the importance of passion and believe that my passion in hospitality is perceived to be an essential personality trait, which could potentially lead me to become an effective leader. Professional development portfolio is powerful process of goal-setting for me to achieve my ideal career and motivate myself to turn vision of the future into real life. Based on SMART goals and self-reflection model of Morrison (1996), my future goal is to promote to higher position as Front Office Manager in next five year where I can develop and respond new challenges of management. I expect to get involved in hotel product and service strategy, where I can increase leadership skill in hospitality.
To achieve further development to become a successful leader, I am getting involved in graduating Master of Hotel Management certification, participating in hotel activities to improve communication and management skills, learning and enriching knowledge of hospitality industry, observing problem solving skills of Head of departments and also managing pressure to take risks when dealing with internal and external factors in hotel business. In conclusion, the concept of reflecting theories with personal development is significantly essential to the author to develop my performance that leads to the further position in hospitality industry.

Who Is Puneet Dhawan
Mr. Dhawan is a hospitality executive with over 23 years of experience in the industry. He is currently the Senior Vice President of Operations for India & South Asia at Accor, one of the world’s largest hotel companies. In this role, Puneet is responsible for Accor’s operations across India and South Asia, overseeing a team of more than 4,000 employees. Prior to joining Accor, Puneet was the General Manager of Sofitel Manila in the Philippines. During his time at the Sofitel, Puneet oversaw a $10 million renovation of the property and was named “General Manager of the Year” by Hospitality Management magazine. Puneet has also held positions with Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Administration/Management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Mr. Dhawan has been appointed by Accor as Senior Vice President of Operations for India and South Asia. His appointment took effect on August 1st, 2020, replacing Jean-Michel Cassé, Chief Operating Officer (COO) For India & South Asia, who left for retirement.
Mr. Dhawan has worked for Accor for more than 20 years. During that time, he has held important positions in nations like Australia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines. He supervised 35 hotels in six nations while serving as Vice President of Operations – Economy & Midscale Brands Accor Middle East, Dubai Regional Office.
He was assigned the role of General Manager Delegate in Bangalore in 2012. Under his direction, the Accor hotels opened Novotel and ibis Bengaluru Techpark, Accor’s first dual property in India, with more than 500 rooms, six restaurants, and bars, and more than 300 staff members.

The Mumbai International Hospitality Day Awards were held as a celebration of those connected to the hospitality sector. This honor recognizes the labor and dedication of industry professionals who have given their all to reviving the sector following a two-year slump. The great journey of Siddharth Sabharwal to Goodluck Interiors

Struggle is a part of every good story. The journey of the founder of Goodluck Interiors, Siddharth Sabharwal  is not only heart touching but inspiring too. His Path to becoming an entrepreneur wasn’t easy. His childhood was far from being a fairytale. He was five when he lost his father in a road accident who was a renowned businessman in Delhi. After his father’s demise, his world become upside down. The family was left penniless and homeless. To meet the daily livelihood needs his mother decided to work, though the salary wasn’t enough to raise her two sons but her spirit was commendable. He chose to embrace the spirit and never give up attitude of his mother who despite the fact had too many of her own dreams destroyed encouraged him to dream.
 Since Childhood, he had interest in acting and cricket. He wanted to be an actor; however due to financial issues he couldn’t pursue his dream and had to give up on becoming an actor.
 Despite having a good academic record he couldn’t afford to take admission in any good institution due to financial crisis. Hence, he decided to continue his studies through Indira Gandhi Open University after completing his board exams. He then decided to work part time in wave cinemas after classes.  He even worked as a freelancer promoter at Rs. 300 per day. Thereafter, he applied Bachelor of Arts Programming course and simultaneously he started looking for a job.  After gaining experience from call centres, he got a brilliant opportunity to work with a leading real estate brand Emaar India where he would receive a salary of Rs 16,200/- per month. He quit his old job and moved to Sobha Ltd from where he got this amazing opportunity to work for them in Dubai.
 After working in Dubai for good two years he moved back to India. Once again luck was not on his side and the pandemic had hit hard. He was left with Rs. 35,000/- in his account. Being creative minded, he developed interest in interior designing and during the lockdown he acquired interior designer degree. From there, a new journey of becoming an entrepreneur started. He named his firm as Goodluck interiors after his Father’s farmhouse, Good Luck Farmhouse.   He got his first site for interior designing in August 2020 and from there he never looked back. Today he is a well known interior designer who has completed many sites successfully in Delhi/NCR, Gurgaon and other parts of north India. He aspires to work Pan India and his vision is to deliver a perfectly executed project to his customers.
