remember in 1x12 (faith) when dean has the conversation with the faith healer and he says, "why? why me? out of all the sick people, why save me?" and the healer answers, "well, like i said before, the lord guides me. i looked into your heart and you just... stood out from all the rest." and dean asks, "what did you see in my heart?" and the faith healer answers, "a young man with an important purpose- a job to do. and it isn't finished."

and then remember when in 2x13 (houses of the holy) when sam asks dean, "why can't you even consider the possibility?" and dean says "what, that this is an angel?" and sam says "yes. maybe we're hunting an angel here, and we should stop. maybe this is god's will." and then dean says "okay. all right. you know what? i get it. you've got faith. that's -- hey, that's good for you. i'm sure it makes things easier. i'll tell you who else had faith like that -- mom. she used to tell me when she tucked me in that angels were watching over us. in fact, that was the last thing she ever said to me." and sam says, "you never told me that." and dean responds, "what's to tell? she was wrong. there was nothing protecting her. there's no higher power. there's no god. there's just chaos and violence. and random, unpredictable evil that comes out of nowhere and rips you to shreds. so you want me to believe in this stuff? i'm gonna need to see some hard proof. you got any?"

and then remember in 4x01 (lazarus rising) when dean meets castiel and asks "who are you?" and castiel says, "i'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition." and then again dean asks, "who are you?" and castiel responds, "castiel." and dean says, "yeah i figured that much, i mean what are you?" and cas says, "i'm an angel of the lord." and dean says, "get the hell out of here. there's no such thing." and cas shows him the fearsome wrath of heaven and later dean says, "look pal i'm not buying what you're selling, so who are you really?" and cas says, "i told you." and dean says, "right. and why would an angel, rescue me from hell?" and cas tells him, "good things do happen, dean." and dean says, "not in my experience." and cas asks him, "what's the matter?" and then tells him, "you don't think you deserve to be saved." and dean asks, "why'd you do it?" and cas tells him "because god commanded it. because we have work for you."

and then remember when in 4x16 (on the head of a pin) when cas is talking to dean in the hospital and dean asks, "is it true? did i start all of this?" and cas has to say, "yes. when we discovered lilith's plan for you... we laid siege to hell, and we fought our way to get to you before you --" and dean cuts in to say "jump-started the apocalypse." and cas' gaze turns skyward as he says, "but we were too late." and dean asks, "why didn't you just leave me there, then?" and cas, with eyes still upward says, "it's not... blame that falls on you, dean. it's fate." and cas turns his gaze downward once more as he says, "and the righteous man who begins it is the only one who can finish it." and then he turns to dean, looking at him for the first time, and says, "you have to stop it." and dean asks, "lucifer? the apocalypse? what does that mean?" and cas looks away from him and says nothing so dean says, "hey. don't you go disappearing on me, you son of a bitch. what does that mean?" and cas is staring resolutely forward as he says, "i don't know." and dean exclaims "bull!" and cas once more says, "i don't." before looking at dean again and saying, "dean, they don't tell me much. i know... how our fate rests with you." and then dean, with tears in his eyes says, "well, then you guys are screwed." and then he says, "i can't do it, cas. it's too big." and then he says, "alastair was right. i'm not all here. i'm not -- i'm not strong enough." and then cas looks back and dean and dean looks away from cas for the first time since the conversation started and says, "well, i guess i'm not the man either of our dads wanted me to be." and cas looks away and dean says "find someone else. it's not me." and the tears dean has been trying so hard to hold back finally fall.

anyway. i just thought all of that was kinda interesting.

Critical theory: Faith, miracles, and redemption. 

Discussion question(s): What do we learn about Sam and Dean’s characters in relation to their respective belief or lack thereof? How does this tie in with the themes and motifs as we have defined them thus far? How do we feel about the introduction of angels as a concept, knowing what we know about the direction the show takes in this regard [for Iga, mostly just that they exist, for Kai perhaps some more detail?]? 

Key quotes: Dean, “But angels? I don’t think so. [Why not?] Because there’s no such thing, Sam.”; Dean, “Mom used to say that angels were watching over us. In fact, that's the last thing she ever said to me… but she was wrong.”; Father Greygory “Some people need redemption. Don't they, Sam?”  

Discussion: Episode of all time. Such a rich episode. Obsessed. 

Dean doubting it so much at the beginning is so beautiful—he struggles so hard to believe there’s good in the world, because he’s suffered so much. The figures that were supposed to be watching over him didn’t, so he doesn’t wanna give this one a chance to let him down, to abandon him. Then he saw what he saw and doesn’t know what to believe, he’s shook. Could angels not just be the spirits of those who aren’t at rest? Gregory truly believed he was carrying out God’s will (and we're inclined to agree, he literally prevented pedophilia, rape, etc.). However, Sam was willing to kill a guy because the ‘angel’ told him to… and he’s supposedly so worried about turning evil. Killing someone before they do the bad thing is exactly what Dean is refusing to do. Or, he’s been trying to convince Dean to kill him before he goes evil, so maybe this is Sam’s way of putting him money where his mouth is, ie. convince himself it’s okay to kill someone before they do the bad thing, if you truly believe they will do the bad thing. 

Dean is so scared to hope, to believe there is good. He promises to save Sam, but who will save him? :) 

Re: belief or lack thereof. Juxtaposition of. Dean doesn’t trust good things, because he doesn’t want to be abandoned… because he hasn’t experienced good things. Sam has, he has experienced good things, so he can believe there’s good things out there. Makes it ironic that Sam is cursed with the demon shit, because Dean feels like he’s cursed. 

Star student: Iga, Dean doesn’t want to give God an opportunity to abandon him. Iga, Sam is “fated to be the fucking devil or something.”

Notes: Kai and Iga are going insane over this episode and they don’t even know the half of it. I am eating glass. We quite like Sam in this episode actually (Jared did alright). Great use of Knocking on Heaven’s Door.

S4 E3 THE WICKED DAY

Arthur was regent here and stuggling to save his dying father. Even so ,Magic was still outlawed in camelot. Magic users are illegal, magic is a crime. Arthur is willing to defy his own decree to save his loved one, Uther, who was dying.

Arthur is using those "what would you do if you were me" questions again. To Merlin. He always does this. He always try to earn Merlin's sympathy. And it disgusts me because with this tactic Merlin would have to agree. He'd have to put himself in Arthur's shoes. Uther and Arthur regularly do this to Merlin.

but hear this. Arthur is King. Merlin is a servant. There is a class difference. In this short moment of time he is treating them as equals when in actuality, THEY ARE NOT. Arthur just wants a springboard who'd bounce back his ideas to him.

It's awful. It's manipulative. It doesn't level the playing field. Merlin has to understand the King's feelings first.

Arthur tries to give magic a chance. Merlin then disguises himself as Dragoon. Dragoon gives everythng he has to try to save Uther. but it backfires because of the charm Morgana has planted. Uther dies.

Arthur blames himself for trusting magic.

Merlin explains to Arthur that the sorcerer did everything he could, that the spell must have gone wrong, and that Uther was dying already.

Arthur says that he was arrogant for trying to defy the 20 years that his father fought against magic. Arthur then declares that All Magic is Pure Evil.

Arthur has become Uther here. He has denied that it was his father's wish that killed his mother. He has denied that it was him who tried to use magic to save his father. Instead of taking responsibility for his and his father's wishes he chooses to blame sorcery for their deaths, He blames Dragoon instead. He condemns all magic.

Merlin is close to tears. Arthur wouldn't listen to him. Arthur has condemned all magic folk because magic wasn't able to save the King's life. Merlin blames himself again.

S2 E10 THE LAST DRAGONLORD

Arthur (and Merlin) had tried to guilt Balinor to come back and save Camelot despite everything Uther did to Balinor and his kin. (what the hell). Balinor was still an outlaw, by Camelot standards. He was only "allowed back" because his persecutor said so. (what the hell)

Merlin and Balinor had been holding back on using his magic the whole time because Arthur Pendragon was there.

The moment Merlin used magic to kill their attackers, Balinor had already been stabbed.

Merlin didn't care if he was going to be seen at this point. Even by Arthur. Merlin was in grave danger here of being discovered too.

Merlin didn't even get the chance to perform healing magic on his dad. Merlin tries to cover up his despair so that Arthur would not see.

IT'S A CRUEL PARALLEL, YOU KNOW?

The Pendragons will never be in danger if anyone saw them use magic. They have that immunity. Merlin and Balinor never had that kind of safety net. It's fucked up.

Moreover

Up till the end Merlin wasn't even allowed to grieve openly for Balinor. He barely had time to make a decent grave. In the courtroom he was barely holding his feelings.

Later in the episode Arthur even had the audacity to tell him "No Man is Worth Your Tears." - Arthur still believes all magic users are bad at this point. Balinor included.

He didn't even give sympathy to Merlin and just told him what to do. He didn't even care if Balinor was Merlin's friend. This is the same attitude he showed when Will died. Instead of comforting Merlin for losing his best friend, Arthur still went full bastard and told him that death is what happens when magic is involved IN FRONT OF WILL'S GRAVE. IN FRONT OF MERLIN.

Yet when Uther died, Merlin didn't sleep and waited for Arthur until morning. Merlin told him "I didn't want you to be alone."

Merlin still said this to the guy who had condemned him and his people once again. Merlin should have been celebrating Uther's death. But no. He offers comfort to Arthur. Because Merlin is kind. And despite all the Pendragon's war crimes against Merlin, his family, his entire race, he understand the loss of someone dear.

Arthur can never let himself go down to Merlin's level and try to understand him. Arthur never cares if Merlin's friends are dead, even when they died in front of him.

Arthur doesn't like it when Merlin looks upset, Merlin has to smile and be chipper around him all the time. When Merlin isn't being that kind of persona, he flips his shit. When he's the cause, he becomes defensive and throws tantrums. When a magic user that also happens to Merlin's friend is dead, he becomes this righteous preacher who tells Merlin that those people aren't worth crying over. When he sees Merlin get upset over Gaius, Guinver, Gwaine, Lancelot, Arthur assumes Merlin's feelings for him confidently, saying "I know that you feel…" to the point where Merlin has no choice but to bottle his feelings and shut up. But when Arthur is the one in need, Merlin shows sympathy and kindness to him. When Arthur is the one who needs someone to agree with him, he makes Merlin sympathise with him, up to the point of emotional manipulation.

Make excuses for him all that you want. He's supposedly one with a kind and noble heart right? He's supposed to care for Merlin right? He's his only friend, right? Then he only cares as long as his ego isn't bruised. Admitting that magicfolk who die protecting Merlin or himself would shatter his worldview. He'd have to relearn everything he's been taught. So he'd rather go back to his old familiar beliefs/perceptions and stick to that.

That's why he retracted Merlin's position in the round table when Merlin called him out for not following through the Equality he promised. That's why he couldn't accept that the Triple Goddess judged him through the Disir. He'll rather lash out than try to respect that Merlin can't be with him in Camlann. Merlin has to understand why he is hurt after all. If Merlin was in Arthur's position, wouldn't Merlin feel hurt too? Wouldn't Merlin want to call someone else a coward too? Who cares what that person is feeling? Arthur was hurt by Merlin's first proper refusal! It's the only thing that matters! It's like the 2nd to the last episode of the series AND YET He's still acting like a spoiled brat to Merlin! Because he can! he made sure he can! It's all about him, HIM, HIM. His ego is more important than anything. That's why he never ever ever learns.

This is why I always say that Arthur didn't need Merlin's magic reveal to start showing respect. He never shows respect and sympathy to Merlin as a person even in Season One up to Pre-Camlann. It is no wonder why Merlin just couldn't trust him. It's why Merlin has doubts. It's why Merlin is afraid of him.

another more damning parallel:

Balinor dies = Hastily Made Grave = Merlin barely allowed to Grieve = Merlins accepts his legacy and power as Dragonlord and that "he is a gift."

Merlin still helps the king that murdered his whole kin because he doesn't want innocent people to die.

Uther dies = Elaborate Grave = Arthur Given Time and Space to be Alone and Weep = Arthur steps into his legacy and power as bigot oppressor king.

Arthur continues Uther's legacy of persecuting the magic folk who tried to help him and fulfill his wishes. Men, women, children be damned. Magic is only good to him if they are to his advantage.

[tv review] tos 2x08-2x14 (1967)

2x08 “i, mudd”

this is absolutely a much better mudd episode than “mudd’s women,” but mudd episodes are just… not great episodes? i’m glad that they was so much better in discovery, and i’m sure his episodes will be great in strange new worlds if he ever shows up there as well. which is funny because i actually like the way he’s portrayed in tos a lot better than the way he’s portrayed in discovery? like, conniving con man who gets under the captain’s skin is way more star trekky to me than just… “straight-up a murderer.” but the episodes around him in tos are just… ugh.

i loved all the silly stuff kirk & co did to try to confuse the androids, though. definitely the highlight of either of tos’s mudd episodes. c-rank

2x09 “metamorphosis”

i don’t have a lot to say about this one? it’s just… kinda boring and lonely. cool that they introduced zefram cochrane for later shows (even enterprise) to do a much better job with, i guess. d-rank

2x10 “journey to babel”

this would be a landmark episode if only for introducing spock’s parents and two founding members of the federation (the andorians and tellerites). but it’s also got some of the most plentiful and in-your-face play-doh food of the series, an absolutely bonkers star trek fight, a murder investigation, dr. mccoy doing bullshit star trek medicine, a space battle… there’s kind of a lot going on in this episode! it really is one i always look forward to. i really think this kind of stuff is tos at its best. a-rank

2x11 “friday’s child”

… and this is tos at its worst. seriously, this is so boring. it’s just 45 minutes of nothing! and oh yeah, my abusive ex “ironically” loved mccoy slapping that one lady across the face and then her following him around all doe-eyed for the rest of the episode. so, you know. not exactly an association it’s easy to get out of my head, and not a pleasant one in the first place.

i’m not just docking it because of that, though. it was already extremely bad all on its own. d-rank

2x12 “the deadly years”

the best part of this episode is when they reuse footage from “balance of terror” to make it look like the enterprise is under attack by the romulans. c-rank

2x13 “obsession”

hey. hey. what if we did “the man trap” again, but like, kinda worse? like, not bad bad, but just kinda… ever so slightly worse? and added a whole thing where the monster of the week was just super in captain kirk’s head. and he takes it out on some poor hapless security guy. wouldn’t that be fun!!

2x14 “wolf in the fold”

yeah, okay, it’s bad, but it’s still a star trek murder mystery, so it’s at least watchable!! seriously, though, jack the ripper is a disembodied psychic force of evil? and he sounds like that? go fuck yourself lmao. c-rank

god, Houses of the Holy (2x13) makes me so so sad. this is the episode where the ghost of a priest “carries out God’s will” and convinces people (and himself) that he is an angel and then tells them to kill sinners. The entire episode Sam is convinced that this spirit is actually an angel sent down from heaven and has good intentions. Dean, however, correctly believes that it’s a ghost and refuses to hear Sam out. The entire time he thinks Sam is naive to believe that this could possibly be an angel. They have their whole Boy Melodrama moment where it’s revealed that Sam prays, every single day. He prays because it gives him a sparkle of hope in the dark, evil world of hunting. This episode KILLS ME because he never knew what was coming. He had no idea that he was Lucifer’s vessel. He had no idea he was cursed with demon blood. He just wanted peace and turned to the divine to give that to him. Instead, he’s cursed with evil inside him, doomed to hell since birth. HE JUAT WANTED TO LEAD A PEACEFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE BUT HIS BODY WAS TAKEN AND USED BY THE DEVIL IM GOING TO SOB

it’s so deliciously cruel that it’s DEAN who is divinely chosen and beloved by god when he is faithless and disobedient and it’s SAM who is forsaken but he prays every single day he prays every single day guys i’m freaking out
