Charlotte Luchessi (Yuu/MC): The Keeper of Time; the Chrono Witch

A Young girl no older than 17 with secrets of herself she will do ANYTHING to hide. Mysteriously appearing before Mayor Crowley on a rather unusual night, when ‘the stars were rumored to fall’, she possesses what looks to be an ordinary pocket watch left to her by her parents before their ‘mysterious disappearances’; an item with which she will NEVER part with. Whilst playing the role of his ‘proxy’, as per the usual storyline of TWST, this MC has more than meets the eye: taking refuge, so to speak, in NightRaven City with her four other cohorts and roommates, Charlotte is extremely wary of the people she trusts in this dark city, but is determined to unearth its secrets and break the barriers from outside in.

Keeping tabs on the people she ‘stumbles’ across is no easy task. Whilst putting up a rather open and headstrong persona, she shows a mature and wisened being for someone her age; very capable person, can easily adapt to situations around her. Despite her maturity, she retains a sense of humor and occasionally shows a bit of playfulness when such a moment presents itself. Her biggest flaw, however, like most Shonen protagonists, is that she hides her own hidden agenda. With secrets deeper than the oceans itself, she will fight ANYONE, class status or not, that she sees as an enemy, or taking the unintentional role as leader of a rebellion.

She hides the truth that she, in fact, is a magic user herself, along with her friends. One with unparalleled power, some rumors spread that she’s not even fully human with abilities far Normal than average. But her most unique ability, to look through time itself, proves to also be but an altruistic source that enemies will kill her to control for their own nefarious purposes. Soon, It’s clear that she and her sisters didn’t show up out of thin air; she and her friends PLANNED to be in the city for reasons unknown. The Dark Mirror, All Seven Embassies and the pocket watch are all part of a mysterious web of lies that will plunge the entire city, nay the world, into chaos….

Facts

- comes from a family of five: both parents and two older siblings and herself, all of different occupations from accounting to factory workers to manuscript writers.

- she occasionally steals slips of tarts from Riddle’s kitchen (loves strawberries to a T, can you blame her?) whilst he’s busy at work with Crowley in discussing affairs.

- is said to have a strong connection to the stars and can read their patterns from where she stands.

- after “losing” her parents, she considers herself to be an older leading figure to those less fortunate, and helps those with nothing left in life.

- She is called The Chrono Witch due to her ability to look into time itself, an ability she had when she was only 8 years of age. How she got it is unknown….for now…

- may or may not have caught of the eyes of Seven important figures of each embassy~

Felicity Tyler: the Female Warrior; the Blonde Assassin

The first of the four cohorts in league with the Chrono Witch. Not much is known about her past, shrouded in mystery as her figure that dons a long brown cloak. What IS confirmed: from birth, she had been raised in a family of men and trained to be the fastest of assassins. Yet growing up in a household of men left her with no mother-figure to come to for guidance. Yet Charlotte seems to be that ‘mother’ she confides in with dark confessions, keeping the two stitched together tighter than a patchwork doll. But she’d rather die than show any vulnerability towards strangers. After all, assassins are stone-cold killers, right?….

The phrase ‘put your money where your mouth is’ is her embodiment of work. Felicity is known to gather intel from any people she is sent to kill or intimidate; is the broker for Charlotte, giving her any and all useful information. This kind of Leverage is always the best piece to use against those higher than yourself, after all~. But also, keep your mouth shut around her since she can hear even whispers of any secrets, and as someone who considers the shadows as her friend, you’d be screwed either way. And more often not one for being the center of attention, she prefers to work where she feels like she is one. And when it comes to enemies targeting HER, any past or current targets seem to always allude her and are never able to get to her in time…

Charlotte considers her as a second-in command to the Sanctuary due to her own ambitions or high list of skills. But if there’s one thing that Felicity holds over any of the other girls in the group: she’s the most second feared female of the group behind Charlotte. And it not in terms of power, just physical strength alone. As Milady d’Winter took out an entire fleet of Musketeers using their own rapiers and a single bullet, it’s rumored she had annihilated a fleet of Leona’s guardsmen with her own cane-sword with her sight blinded by a scarf she stole from the second prince’s room, to which she keeps to this very day~.

Facts

- Has two younger brothers, polar opposites to one another.

- from the first victim’s life she took, she kept all four of their wisdom teeth from the corpse and is kept in a jar in her room.

- doesn’t bother brushing her hair due to running around so much on account of her job. This drives Evelyn rather crazy as all her neat work on brushing the blonde’s locks just goes out the window the moment she throws herself out said window, literally.

- Although not a dabbler in Alchemy compared to Rebecca, Felicity unintentionally created a substance she uses to bind her opponents on rare occasions (should they be rebellious or fast runners from her grasp) She calls this plastic creation Morphia. Such a “small drop in the ocean” of magic, no~?

- doesn’t believe in the whole ‘Sweet or Salty or Savory’ flavor profiles. But is unintentionally a “Salty” person.

Odette Dupree: The Engineer; The Mechanical Doll

The most infamous Engineer NightRaven City has yet to know. Unlike Felicity, she hailed from a family of strong women, having never seen her father after the birth of her younger sister; though it’s rumored she’s trying to track him down for reasons unknown. At times, it’s rumored that she’s not actually human, but rather an AI who bears a strong resemblance of a human, much akin to a Cinder moment. But then again, rumors are just rumors, no? So try not to anger her lest you want her to chuck a wrench at you enough to make your soul float out of your body (Winry, is that you?!).

She works mostly on making transportation tech and all kinds of weaponry that she gladly lets Charlie and the others test out when on missions. She’s a partial shut-in, not making many interactions with most people from the outside, except for her sisters and family, but some of the military base workers know of her inventions. She’s even said to have caught the eye of the heir of the Briar Valley and the Shroud brothers due to her genius intellect and way with machinery that no other inventor or engineer possesses. Some might even say there’s a bit of “fire” when it comes to perfecting whatever she creates with her mind sane and her head on her shoulders.

However, like most people within NightRaven City, and history, she is met with prejudice on both her gender and class. As women were very rarely seen in the field of science (and the world ran by old white men who believe they’re on top of everyone, women included), she is scorned on how women can never make a difference in this world. Especially one of white supremacy. But she grits her teeth and fights back against those who doubt her. Just wait; one day, SHE will have the last laugh.

Facts

- her very first invention was a pair of angel wings, which she still tries to perfect with other prototypes to this day

- she tends to bathe daily due to all of the sweat and tears she pours into the work of her machines. Even comes back from the warehouse covered in soot! So, She’s usually the cause of the water bill skyrocketing through the roof at times…

- although they work in the same warehouse, Odette rarely collaborates with Rebecca on mixing both engineering with alchemy to create powerful inventions (may or may not have a WOMD in the warehouse where they both work).

- Has tense relations with several of the men around her due to the sexiest prejudice she faces on a daily basis.

- she’s the second of the girls, next to Felicity, who hates wearing skirts. She claims that they limit her freedom of leg movement compared to wearing pants or shorts with her work. But unlike Felicity, she will wear skirts for formal outings if she is required to.

Rebecca Lawson: The Alchemist; The Mad Scientist

The Alchemist of the Natural World, a title this young woman has been dubbed as since her early teen years. As the Researcher of the Group, she has read books from the early age of 3, maybe 4 years old, filling her head with so much science, literature, mathematics, or history; it’s no surprise that she speaks her mind without hesitation on historical inaccuracy. And her photographic memory is extremely top notch, so having to remind her comrades about certain objects or details comes in handy now and then.

Usually one to test out many new chemicals sent to the Warehouse she works in, she gets along well with Odette over any of the other girls. Due to their occupations intersecting within the field of science, they’re always seen teaming up with one another on projects or giving an extra set of hands on major work when needed. Although her work is barely known, she is said to have caught the eyes of many more scientists and try to lure her into jobs working for with them.

However, behind that brilliant mind and genius intellect is a young woman who has insecurities of not being good enough. The loss of her parents and their actions of doing what’s best for her left a mental scar deep in her mind to always push herself into doing more and more until she collapses. Her method of work leaves a brash stigma between herself and other scientists, and leaves her comrades to defend her actions. But one day, she hopes to break free of her parent’s method of hard work and be strong enough to break out of her shell.

Facts

- the saddest thing about her background is that she has lost both of her parents to an alchemy accident and she is pursuing alchemy unintentionally.

- she may or may not be caught the eyes of Vil Schoenheit and his troupe with her experimentations. But he pays her rather well with the work she presents to him and the final product.

- she rarely gets angry. And if she does, she tends to rant in Spanish, a habit passed down to her from her father.

- usually hunts and gathers all kinds of rare plants and herbs to use in her experiments. Mostly used for antibiotics, poisons or antidotes.

- one of her favorite birthday presents was an alchemy kit given to her by her brother and grandparents, which she still keeps to this very day.

Evelyn Chu: the Heiress; The Gentry Socialite of Asia

The Eldest daughter and heiress of the Chu family’s massive fortune. Elegant, refined and courteous to all around her. Her origins started from rather humble beginnings; born into a life of wealth, she however, doesn’t care for the money or riches, rather focusing on keeping the interest of others over her own. Although she is a socialite, and gossiping with the higher society will help her family get better connections after all, she tends to drift more towards her group of sisters, finding comfort with them over the stuffy and prim-proper parties she’s forced to attend with her parents.

Although sometimes a benefactor to the less fortunate, she prefers to finds work in various places to earn her cash through her own means necessary. Much to the worry of Chu Hua, her personal maid. And at times, some may see her as an easy target to attack, but having learnt battle techniques like that of a warrior, she gives a whack with her cane for good measure to anyone that tries to kill her. So this makes her Often known for putting down those who dare pick fights with her in the city. She’s a lady, after all; she doesn’t start fights, but she can finish em~.

She is a master tactician, carefully analyzing her opponents moves and what their motives may be in certain schemes. This kind of analyst attitude gets her some work from the military base, where two certain egg-heads and a ginger-haired captain want her to work alongside them. But Evelyn, despite her outlook on life, longs for a life of freedom, where expectations to be what her parents vy for her to be aren’t damaging to her sanity.

Facts

- her ancestors are known to be part of the origins of the Silk Road in ancient times, which may explain their massive riches~….

- As a child, she would always drink Chu Hua’s tea, in order to protect her feelings; despite disliking its bitterness for a long time, she eventually found it delicious.

- one time, she had an Elizabeth Swann moment where her corset was too tight during a high-class gathering and she passed out close to the refreshments table. Needless to say, her parents weren’t too happy about the catastrophe.

- she has Chu Hua look after Charlotte’s house whilst she and the girls go out on their missions. One time had some burglars break in but Chu Hua sent them packing (mey rin who?!).

- she owns a private airship that she rarely takes in emergency cases, but has it parked in the Workshop for easier access.

As stated before, Charlotte and her friends are here for certain reasons. But for now, they all stay together under one roof and offer their open doors to people with magic/supernatural abilities like them.

The Sanctuary, out of the Embassy system the City upholds, houses people with unusual abilities. Taken in from wherever, or turned down by the system the city supports itself with, Charlotte welcomes outcasts into her domain, and she and her sisters help these people to go beyond their own limits and expand their horizons of power that NightRaven City tries to conceal.

The Sanctuary wasn’t born officially, but gradually became one as more and more outcasts began to apply and be under her care and guidance. This results in Charlotte living two lives as a result of this hidden Sanctuary: as Crowley’s assistant and as the house-warden of The Rebellion Sanctuary.

But little did anyone know was that whatever Charlotte saw with her own ability would change the course of NightRaven City for better or worse. And she and her friends, will be there to stop it in its tracks….even at the cost of their lives….

thought about the movies everything everywhere all at once and the half of it today until i was sick. eeaao because i was analyzing joy wang's character as a nihilist and the half of it because i'm writing a final paper comparing it to sartre's no exit.

i'm so behind on this class, it's not even funny. it's called literature & existentialism and i picked it because i thought i would like it. i was supposed to like it. then again i was also supposed to take another lit class and consider the major this semester and none of that happened either. when i did wake up in time, i'd go to this class and sit in the back and try to just listen in, and the professor would call on me for nodding off.

but it'll be okay. my discussion post is a month late but i talked about how jobu tupaki searched through all possible universes for a version of a mother who loved and understood her. how she was driven to give up her sense of freedom and agency in the face of these pressures from her mother -- to be straight, college-educated, skinny, more fluent in chinese, less americanized -- and succumb to the conclusion that nothing matters. i have an idea for the thesis for my final paper -- in class we learned about sartre's framework for the concept of "the other" and how profoundly disturbing it is to be in the presence of another person, because as the center of your own universe you are in control of the meaning you choose to give to the world, and when another person is within your universe, your agency is being chipped away. you -- and your meaning -- become chained to the other's judgment of you. and for the half of it i was thinking about different ways people try to take back control of their narrative from the other, whether that's through overexplaining or overexposure of yourself or through physical distance from the other.

there's other things, more important things, about both movies that an existentialist framework could never fully explain away. i thought about evelyn, when facing the possibility of losing her own daughter to the black hole, asking helplessly to her father how he found it in himself to let her go. i thought about the lights from the failing laundromat, the smashed windows, the glass on that dark street, and mother and daughter trying so hard one more time to listen to each other, even though it hurts so much. then i thought about the ending of the half of it, paul munsky running after ellie chu's train, knowing that it's futile and that she's going where he can't follow, but doing it anyway because it was her favorite scene from the movie ek villain and he remembered. he remembered because he loves her. no drawn-out 60-page essay, translated to english from french, laying out a blueprint for how a man should face the burden of his freedom or his death or whatever, could dream of capturing this.

Desalination system could produce freshwater that is cheaper than tap water

MIT engineers and collaborators developed a solar-powered device that avoids salt-clogging issues of other designs.

Engineers at MIT and in China are aiming to turn seawater into drinking water with a completely passive device that is inspired by the ocean, and powered by the sun.

In a paper appearing today in the journal Joule, the team outlines the design for a new solar desalination system that takes in saltwater and heats it with natural sunlight.

The configuration of the device allows water to circulate in swirling eddies, in a manner similar to the much larger “thermohaline” circulation of the ocean. This circulation, combined with the sun’s heat, drives water to evaporate, leaving salt behind. The resulting water vapor can then be condensed and collected as pure, drinkable water. In the meantime, the leftover salt continues to circulate through and out of the device, rather than accumulating and clogging the system.

The new system has a higher water-production rate and a higher salt-rejection rate than all other passive solar desalination concepts currently being tested.

The researchers estimate that if the system is scaled up to the size of a small suitcase, it could produce about 4 to 6 liters of drinking water per hour and last several years before requiring replacement parts. At this scale and performance, the system could produce drinking water at a rate and price that is cheaper than tap water.

“For the first time, it is possible for water, produced by sunlight, to be even cheaper than tap water,” says Lenan Zhang, a research scientist in MIT’s Device Research Laboratory.

The team envisions a scaled-up device could passively produce enough drinking water to meet the daily requirements of a small family. The system could also supply off-grid, coastal communities where seawater is easily accessible.

Zhang’s study co-authors include MIT graduate student Yang Zhong and Evelyn Wang, the Ford Professor of Engineering, along with Jintong Gao, Jinfang You, Zhanyu Ye, Ruzhu Wang, and Zhenyuan Xu of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China.

Nine Books

Thanks to @cricketnationrise and @myheartalivewrites for the tag! I'm crap at book titles so this was a nice little journey through my Audible account.

Here we go, in no order at all:

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid; I only added this book over Daisy Jones because I liked the narrative style over the "interview"/screenplay style of D.J., though I really enjoyed that story as well.

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah; Funny, thought out, interesting and a little bit sad. Definitely worth the read/listen.

So Here's the Thing by Alyssa Mastromonaco; Alyssa is one of my personal heroes. She was DCOS to President Obama. Brilliant, funny, accomplished and compassionate.

The Ravenmaster by Christopher Skaife; The autobiography of the Tower of London's Ravenmaster. Fascinating story.

The Stand-In by Lily Chu; Two women: one famous, one decidedly not. Fun story of life, friendship and love.

The King of Scars Duology by Leigh Bardugo; Is it a cheat to put a duology on instead of choosing from King of Scars and Rule of Wolves? Don't care. While Nina's story is also told, I love focusing on Nikolai and Zoya, my two faves from the Shadow & Bone world.

A Promised Land by Barack Obama; I don't think I need to explain why I love this story so much.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by She Who Shall Not be Named; Yes, the author is problematic and horrible and should not be supported, but the HP series gave me so many friends that I absolutely would not have without it. This book, in particular, introduced me to one of my favorite literary character, Remus Lupin.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis; Maybe I just like thinking of Ben Barnes on my TV screen but I also loved the adventure of this story and Lucy's journey.

Despite it being one of my most listened to books, I didn't add Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston because that's a given and I think most, if not all, of my friends on here know/have read the book.

muses i have written in the past but have not (yet) brought to dc: giselle (enchanted), emma woodhouse (emma), annie edison (community), tessa gray (the infernal devices), jackie burkhart (that 70s show), cindy moon (silk/marvel), annie jenks (carrie), helen shivers & julie james (i know what you did last summer), summer roberts (the oc), cassandra cillian (the librarians), alice hamilton (syfy’s alice), lemon breeland (hart of dixie), ruby (supernatural).

extremely actor specific, but every single park boyoung and shin hyesun character. i’ve chosen already for the former, so i can’t bring in na bongsun, do bongsoon, joo jin, or jung daeun lest i change fcs or drop dongkyung (neither option i really see happening atm).

&& with shin hyesun, there are so many i want to bring but can’t find it in me to decide on one. it’s just so hard to choose between ban jieum, lee yeonseo, woo seori, and cho samdal, that i refuse to do so.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day

I was gifted the book Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War! The book is being published by an imprint of Lerner books (www.lernerbooks.com). The book was researched by children’s author, Talia Aikens-Nunez whose previous publications include the OMG series. Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War is a nonfiction chapter book. While war history is not really my favorite subject to read about, Aikens-Nunez does a great job of capturing your attention with a great introduction. The book is filled with great facts and maps at the beginning of each chapter. I love the inclusion of a glossary as well as a bibliography. While it was a struggle for me to read because of the topic, I really appreciated learning about a facet of history I was not super-familiar with before.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2023 (1/26/22) is in its 10th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
