Helen Norville - A Woman Who Can Laugh! Even at herself! 😉
.
.
Who else cannot stop smiling watching Helen watch a comedian parody her on the telly? Her cackles were so joyous and infectious, and demonstrates the good humoured nature, when she’s in the mental health headspace to support it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helen’s impressionist is played by Nicolette Minster, and didn’t Nicolette give it her all! She nailed Helen’s on-camera brashness and exaggerated Helen’s volatility to the extreme, which thankfully Helen was flattered and delighted by!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The late 1980s and early 1990s was an incredible period of time for women on Australian comedy television, lovingly parodying other women in the media. Over at The Big Gig on the ABC, Jean Kittson brought to life her character of Veronica Glenhuntly; very clearly inspired by the ABC newsreader Mary Delahunty. Some of Nicolette’s body language whilst playing Helen also reminds me of Jean’s very wild and loose flight attendant character too. I met Jean in 2018 at my local library!
Tumblr media
Turn over to Fast Forward on Seven, and a certain actress was doing her lions share of female media personality parodies; Ms Marg Downey, our very own Evelyn Walters! Marg was a small screen star during this time, and a household name. Her hilariously deadpanned performances as the SBS Lady demonstrated just what an extraordinary talent she is. As each season went along, the SBS Lady’s movements became more stiff, to the point where Marg wouldn’t even blink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Throughout her time on Fast Forward and The D Generation, she also parodied journalist Jana Wendt. The drawl of her voice, the hand up to her cheek and the tilt of her head made her look and sound frightfully like Ms Wendt. In a 60 Minutes piece from 1989, Mike Munro showed Wendt Marg’s impersonation, and Ms Wendt was that impressed that she gave Marg a rating of a “good solid eight and a half” out of ten! Looks like our Marg was a talent to be reckoned with even in the real 1980s!
Have you seen Marg’s impression of Jana Wendt? If you haven’t, treat yourself to a viewing session on YouTube and see for yourself how incredible Marg has always been!

Museum for Art in Wood (Part 5)
The last of my posts about the Museum for Art in Wood! This is the set of things that made me or my companion say, This ought to be a SFF book cover, or a story prompt, or some other speculative fiction type-thing.
For instance, every single thing on this shelf is a SFF story. By Fabrice Micha: 370, Sculpture and 632, Castle. By Michael Mode: 636, Akbar's Delight. By Michael Mocho, 505, Satinwood Hollow Form; 635, Box; and 467, Sentinel.
Tumblr media
These two ought to be Yuletide fandoms: A Collection of Goblets, Chalices, and Spirit Vessels from the Seventeen Peoples of the Eight Inner Worlds by Stephen Mark Paulsen, which is incredibly hard to photograph but the official photo is hardly any better??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Desert Winter on Marquard IV, and Twelve Sacred Objects Exposed by the Storm by the same artist; fortunately the official photo is pretty decent because mine is not worth looking at.
Tumblr media
Self Portrait by Michelle Holzapfel. This one feels very like a book cover (and actually has an artist statement at the link!).
Tumblr media
I was going to put this one in "Sculpture" and then I saw the title: Post Nuclear Vessel by Ron Kent.
Tumblr media
Ditto except that it's The Shedding Skin of Evelyn Mind by Jay Heryet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was so enamored of the spiky nature of the one on the front left that I didn't notice it was matches until my companion pointed it out; I was thinking mouths or viruses. (It's called Art Object to be Destroyed by Hilary Pfeifer, Dennis Carr, and Neil Scobie.) And I think the one on the right is a spaceship, though the artist Rolly Munro calls it Oceanic Angel. (I don't know what the one in the back left is.)
Tumblr media
Interactive by Andrew Potocnik made me think of if n-tailed foxes shed all their tails at once. (The components are arranged differently in the website picture, basically parallel.)
Tumblr media
That sure is a Space Burger, by Hap Sakwa.
Tumblr media
I'm delighted to say that my companion pointed out the picture on the left below as something from Star Wars. And it is actually titled Vader Box #3, by Stephen Hughes. (Just visible to the right is the gas giant it's flying around, Strata by Grant Vaughan.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a Great Fairy Fountain, was my first thought. But it genuinely belongs in this section: it's titled Grapefruit to the Moon, by Steve Madsen, and it does open up (pictures at link).
Tumblr media
This is somewhere between War of the Worlds and a beetle. (Dancing Tryclops by Michael Brolly.)
Tumblr media
Finally, this is incredibly charming and I'm glad the website picture is decent because there wasn't room for me to get one: Time Standing Still by Po Shun Leong and Bob Stocksdale.
Tumblr media
And now I'm finally done, woo!

Norman McLaren
Norman McLaren was born in Stirling, Scotland, on April 11, 1914. He had two older siblings, a brother named Jack, and a sister named Sheena. At 21, he went to Russia for a vacation, which solidified his communist beliefs, much to his father's dismay who had funded the trip hoping to change his mind.
At the age of 22, McLaren left Stirling to study set design at the Glasgow School of Art. While there, he joined the Kinecraft Society and began experimenting with various filmmaking styles and techniques. It was at the Glasgow School of Art where he met Helen Biggar, and together they created films outside of school, aiming for national recognition.
In his early film experiments, McLaren would scratch and paint directly onto the film stock due to limited access to a camera. One of his earliest surviving films, Seven Till Five (1935), was influenced by Eisenstein and showcased a formalist approach.
McLaren's film Camera Makes Whoopee (1935) further explored the themes of Seven Till Five, inspired by his new Ciné-Kodak camera. This allowed him to create various 'trick' shots using pixilation effects, superimpositions, and animation to capture the essence of an art school ball.
Both of McLaren's early films received awards at the Scottish Amateur Film Festival, where John Grierson, a fellow Scot and future NFB founder, served as a judge.
Tumblr media
In 1941, Grierson invited McLaren to move to Ottawa and join the National Film Board. McLaren's main tasks were to establish an animation studio, train Canadian animators, and create promotional films. Upon his arrival, he collaborated with American director Mary Ellen Bute on two films called Spook Sport and Tarantella. One of his notable works was a promotional film called Mail Early, which reminded Canadians to send their Christmas cards on time. McLaren also contributed to Allied propaganda documentary films by creating animated shorts and maps. He later worked on a series of animated French songs called Chants Populaire in 1943. In 1944 and 1945, McLaren produced a similar series in English called Let's All Sing Together.
By 1942, the demand for animation at the NFB had grown rapidly, and McLaren struggled to keep up. Grierson then asked him to recruit art students and form a small animation team. However, this task proved challenging as many students had enlisted in the war. McLaren managed to find recruits from the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Ontario College of Art, including talented individuals like René Jodoin, George Dunning, Jim McKay, Grant Munro, and Evelyn Lambart, who would become his future collaborator. McLaren trained these emerging animators, and together they worked on various projects such as cartoons, animated cards, and propaganda documentaries. In January 1943, Studio A, the NFB's first animation studio, was officially established with McLaren as its head.
Throughout his time at the NFB, McLaren created a total of 70 films. Some notable works include Begone Dull Care, Rythmetic, Christmas Cracker, Pas de Deux, and the Oscar-winning Neighbours. Neighbors is particularly remarkable for its powerful combination of visuals and sound, delivering a strong social message against violence and war. McLaren's talent and dedication were recognized with awards such as the Short Film Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film for Blinkity Blank. In fact, McLaren chose Blinkity Blank as his diploma piece when he was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
McLaren collaborated with UNESCO during the 1950s and 1960s to develop educational programs focusing on film and animation techniques in China and India. His series of "Animated Motion" shorts, created in the late 1970s, serve as a valuable resource for learning the fundamentals of film animation.

His legacy -
McLaren's legacy lives on through various tributes and honours. The National Film Board paid tribute to McLaren by naming its Montreal headquarters the Norman McLaren Building. Additionally, the borough of Saint-Laurent, where the NFB is located, is named a district after McLaren. In 1979, the Edinburgh Film house dedicated two seats to McLaren and Grierson. McLaren was also the focus of the short animated documentary "McLaren's Negatives" in 2006. The NFB celebrated the 65th anniversary of NFB animation in the same year with a retrospective of McLaren's restored classics and a new DVD box set of his complete works. Furthermore, in June 2013, the NFB released the "McLaren's Workshop" app on iTunes, allowing users to create films using McLaren's animation techniques. In June 2018, a ballet titled "Frame by Frame," inspired by McLaren's life and work, was staged by Robert Lepage, principal dancer Guillaume Côté, and the National Ballet of Canada. McLaren's influence has even reached filmmaker George Lucas, who has acknowledged McLaren as an inspiration for his own work.

Thoughts on the writer's writer's writer, Henry Green?
Never read him, partly due to your epithet. All one ever hears about is his technique. Is technique enough? I don't like the "writer's writer" phenomenon. This article on writer's writers—with a list of examples pretty evenly divided between people I haven't read and people I don't like, plus a handful to whom I don't think the term applies, since they're obviously major, popular, or both (Sebald, Bolaño, Knausgaard, Munro, Angela Carter)— quotes someone on Green saying,
W. H. Auden, Eudora Welty, V. S. Pritchett, Rebecca West, and John Updike have all described him, at various times, and in various ways, as the finest novelist of his generation, yet he never enjoyed either the commercial success or the literary fame of contemporaries such as Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and Christopher Isherwood
But e.g. Christopher Isherwood, whose technique is impeccable anyway, created Sally Bowles, both a well-rounded fictional character and almost a new archetype of her century. To me, as both writer and reader, that is impressive! I'm probably being unfair and should just read Green, but, since you ask, this is why I haven't so far.

okay they’re closing book depository on the 26th so i’m gonna make one last order. give me names of books i MUST read
what i like: fantasy/ya— the seven husbands of evelyn hugo, the hunger games, the martian, ve schwab, recently i’ve been reading some brandon sanderson
popsci/nonfiction — anything by randall munroe, astronomy/neuroscience/math, i also LOVED catch and kill by ronan farrow and fear by bob woodward
what i don’t like:
sally rooney, anything too adult (i didn’t like where the crawdads sing for example). in general i like books that have a storyline and a plot, and not just focus on relationships between characters
hit me!

ok i do just kind of have to archive this analysis of the 'poem' made out of the names of dolores' classmates in lolita on this blog bc like. riverdalecore! mcfate, artistic artifice, room numbers and street signs and town names that signal the otherwise invisible touch of an author's hand because they correspond too perfectly to already-existing texts to be random!!!

A summary of my live reactions:
So is the whole Serpent thing like…over? Now that their “King” is at an elite prep school? After the writers pushed that storyline so hard for so long?
Since when are Jughead and Moose chummy enough that they would hug at prep school? You can’t give us reunions like this without context of their previous relationship.
“I think I overestimated the financial pull of your pectorals.” WHO WRITES THIS SHIT
We really still have to deal with Edgar? This isn’t considered boring and overplayed yet?
Soooooo you can’t relate to Jughead because you’re a spoiled rich kid?
Nancy Drew’s bobby pin saves the day! Literally!
Let me guess, Jughead’s going to be too strong willed to lose the challenge, and that’s going to cause a huge problem with Brett.
That Archie/Mary argument might be the one of the only scenes this season that I haven’t cringed over.
Isn’t this why Riverdale is supposed to have the Serpents? To deal with these people putting kids on the streets? They’re just a non-existent happy hobby gang now?
Stolen drug money put to good use…is still stolen drug money, Red.
OoOoOo Donna won that round. Nice.
“He bought a rocket?!” “Nope, he’s been building one.” LOL WHAT
And they’re supposed to be strapped to the front of it? LOLOLOLOL WHAT
It would have been better if Betty said “who’s the bitch now?” after clubbing Evelyn in the head
So Betty puts on a beret and that’s supposed to make her seem like she’s in charge to these cultists?
Wait, Archie was just going to live on his own before Mary’s change of heart? Because that’s what a kid who’s been through as much trauma as him in the last few years needs? WTF.
Ah, yes. Poor Moose paying the price. Because the WASP-y bully kid didn’t get his way.

So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?
This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath* In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.
In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.
In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.
In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.
In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.
Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.
Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.
The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.
The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.
Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra
In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.
The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.
Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.
In her Thirteenth Incarnation, the Doctor would spend her entire incarnation travelling Yasmin Khan, being joined by Ryan Sinclair, Graham O'Brien and Dan Lewis.
Throughout many of their lives, The Doctor would constantly meet River Song, though on many occasions would be forced to forget their encounters to preserve the web of time.
And with that, I'm taking a nap - Dev~
