China considers exporting green technology to African leaders amid Western restrictions
This week, China will call for increased shipments of goods, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and solar panels, at a summit of 50 African countries in Beijing in exchange for promises of loans and investment.
However, Chinese leaders are likely to want to hear how China plans to keep an unfulfilled promise from a previous summit in 2021 to buy $300 billion worth of goods. They will also seek assurances of progress on unfinished Chinese-funded infrastructure projects, such as a railway to link the greater East African region. Eric Olander, co-founder of the China-Global South Project, stated:
The prize is going to go to those countries who have carefully studied the changes in China and align their proposals with China’s new slimmed-down priorities. That’s a big ask for a continent that generally has very poor China literacy.
Africa’s largest bilateral lender, investor, and trading partner is refusing to finance expensive projects, preferring instead to sell advanced and environmentally friendly technologies to the continent. Beijing’s top priority will be finding buyers for its EVs and solar panels, as well as establishing overseas manufacturing bases for emerging markets.
China has already begun adjusting the terms of its loans to Africa, allocating more money to solar farms, power plants, and 5G Wi-Fi facilities, while cutting back on bridges, ports, and railways.
Careful cooperation
When President Xi Jinping opens the ninth forum of the China-Africa Cooperation Summit on Thursday, he is expected to brief the leaders of The Gambia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zimbabwe on tapping into China’s growing green energy industry. The meeting will be attended by delegates from all African states except Eswatini, with which Beijing has no ties.
The UK, Italy, Russia, and South Korea also hosted African summits in recent years, recognising the potential of the region’s youth and its 54 seats at the UN. However, China’s huge role as a financial and trading partner makes its meetings much more important.
China is likely to want to talk about expanding trade and access to minerals, such as copper, cobalt, and lithium, in countries like Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. However, Beijing may be cautious about increasing funding commitments following debt restructuring proposals in countries including Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zambia after the 2021 summit.
China’s enthusiasm for lending, however, could be tempered by security concerns, such as the hostility between Niger and Benin that killed six Nigerian soldiers guarding a PetroChina-backed pipeline, or bloody protests in Kenya over tax hikes.

The Logic of “Deep Ecology”
We suffer, these days, from a bad habit. We eat “fast food,” nibble at “fast ideas,” scan “fast headlines,” and buy our panaceas in the form of easily swallowed pills. The need to think out the logic of certain premises is almost totally alien to the “American Way” of the late 20th century. Devall and Sessions’ Deep Ecology and the “movement” they have helped to launch under the presiding icon of Arne Naess, provides what is exactly needed to lull us into a acceptance of “fast ecology.”
As it turn out, however, we cannot say “A” without passing into “B,” or “B” into “C” until we reach “Z.” And there is a “deep” or “deeper ecology” movement of which Devall is a member, formed around a periodical called Earth First! to which Devall is a contributing editor and Sessions a valued contributor. If there is anything fascinating about “Earth First!” as a movement and especially as a periodical, it is the fact that the periodical does go from “A” to “Z” and draws all the logical conclusions from “deep ecology,” conclusions that Devall and Sessions often bury with metaphors, sutras, poetic evocations, and pretensions.
“Earth First!” means exactly what it says and what “deep ecology” implies — the “earth” comes before people, indeed, people (to the periodical’s editor, David Foreman) are superfluous, perhaps even harmful, and certainly dispensable. “Natural law” tends to supplant social factors. Thus: is there a famine in Ethiopia? If so, argues Foreman to an admiring Devall in a notorious interview, nature should be permitted to “take its course” and the Ethiopian should be left to starve. Are Latins (and, one may add, Indians) crossing the Rio Grande? Then they should be stopped or removed, contends Foreman, because they are burdening “our” resources. Devall, who apparently recorded these golden views, doesn’t express a word of protest or even dissent. Nor is there a known denunciation, so far as I know, from Sessions.
Given the preoccupation of Devall and Sessions with the need for an eco-culture — or religion? — what kind of culture should we protect, asks Ed Abbey, the theoretical Pope of “Earth First!”? It turns out that our society has been shaped by a “northern European culture,” declares Abbey — or should we say “Aryan”? Hence there are presumably sound “cultural” reasons — an expression that some might interpret as “racial” — to keep Latins from polluting “our” culture and institutions with their hierarchical attributes. What is the “litmus test” of our adherence to “Earth First!” asks Foreman? It is the question of “population growth,” you see — not capitalism and the competitive market place. No one in that entire crowd, to my knowledge, takes the care to note that if the world’s population were reduced to 500 million (as Naess suggests for a demographic desideratum) or even 5 million, an economic system based on competition and accumulation in which a failure to “grow” is a sentence of economic death in the market place would necessarily devour the biosphere, irrespective of what people need, the numbers they reach, or the intentions that motivate them. American capitalism wiped out some 40 million bison, devastated vast forests, and dessicated millions of acres of soil before its population exceeded 100 million.
If an inherently “grow-or-die” market economy cannot produce cars, it will produce tanks. If it cannot produce clothing, it will produce missiles. If it cannot produce TV sets, it will produce radar guidance systems. “Deep ecology,” with its bows to Malthus, is totally oblivious to these almost classic almost economic principles. Its focus is almost completely zoological and its image of people, indeed, of society is very deeply rooted in “natural forces” rather than social tendencies. Characteristically, it speaks of a “technological society” or an “industrial society” instead of capitalism, a piece of verbal juggling that shrewedly conceals the social relationships that play a decisive role in the technologies and industries society develops and the use to which they are put.
Technology in itself does not produce the dislocations between an antiecological society and nature, although there are surely technologies that, in themselves, are dangerous to an ecosystem. What technology does is essentially magnify a basically social problem. To speak of a “technological society” or an “industrial society,” as Devall, Sessions, and “Earth First!” persistently do is to throw cosmic stardust over the economic laws that guide capital expansion which Marx so brilliantly developed in his economic writings and replace economic factors by zoological metaphors. Herein lies the utterly regressive character of “deep ecology,” “Earth First!” and its religious acolytes like Charlene Spretnak, Kirkpatrick Sale, and the diaperheads who float between Hollywood and Disneyland, indeed, who threaten to remove every grain of radicality in a movement that is potentially, at least, one of the most radical to emerge since the sixties. If the biggest “hole” in the Green movement is the need for a “sustainable religion,” as Spretnak would have us believe, then we have created a donut rather than a movement.

LOGISTIC SERVICES IN DJIBOUTI: A GATEWAY TO AFRICA
Nestled south In the Horn of Africa, Djibouti has become an indispensable centre for trading and logistics in the area. Despite the fact that the country itself is small, its location at the junction of one of the biggest shipping routes has rendered it quite significant strategically. This excellent location, along with large infrastructure expenditures, has enabled Djibouti to become a vital part of international logistics and become the gateway to Africa.
Strategic Importance
The advantageous location of Djibouti next to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea offers an immediate connection to the Suez Canal. is it natural to be responsible for a sizable portion of all global maritime traffic and this particular canal is in itself regarded as one of the most significant ones. Thus, particularly for landlocked East African countries like Ethiopia, which largely rely on Djibouti for access to foreign markets, the ports of Djibouti have become essential to the facilitation of international trade.
Port Infrastructure
The logistics sector of the nation depends mostly on the Port of Djibouti. The harbour has been extensively modernized over the years to effectively manage growing cargo quantities. With its cutting-edge amenities, it can hold a wide variety of ships, including oil tankers and cargo boats. The plans strategized for the port centre on changing and developing its operating effectiveness, cutting turnaround times, and increasing capacity to satisfy future needs.
Apart from its main port, Djibouti has created a number of specialist ports, such as the Doraleh Container Terminal and the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port. Doraleh, which is known as one of Africa's most sophisticated container terminals, have greatly increased the overall ability of the nation's handle containerized or can say package freight and promotes smoother commercial environment. Conversely, Logistic service in Djibouti capabilities yet are seen to be further diversified by the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port, which handles a variety of cargo types from bulk commodities to cars.
Rail Connectivity
To advance with its maritime infrastructure, Djibouti has invested in better rail connections. The 750-kilometer standard gauge Djibouti-Ethiopia railway, which links Djibouti with Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, is another important pillar of this project. This railway provides a stable and cost-effective means of transporting goods between the two countries, significantly cutting down on transit times and costs.
Air Freight Services
Air freight services are still highly prominent in the region or Subcontinent of Djibouti's logistics environment, even though the rail and water ways specially the ocean transit still dominate the country's logistics landscape, particularly for early and expensive or important commodities. The major Sector for aircraft freight is Djibouti-Ambouli global Airport, which also provides frequent connections to major and prominent global hubs. Many different items, including consumbales and Legal or Medicinal drugs, are transported frequently and protected via the airport's cargo facilities.
Logistics Parks and Free Zones
Djibouti is establishing a logistics center and hurdle less-trade zones to enhance its logistical capabilities. For example, the largest trading zone in Africa is situated in Djibouti. Logistic service in Djibouti provides you in a friendly environment, efficient customs laws and procedures, and advantageous tax rates are all advantageous to businesses. These locations are highly appealing to Multinational companies looking to establish themselves in the region, which boosts employment opportunities and diversifies the economy.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its magnificent growth, logistic service in Djibouti's transportation and storage sector faces constraints . Its growth trajectory is heavily effected by elements including native and indigenous safety concerns, Political and local stability, and the need for ongoing infrastructural development. Furthermore, considering Ethiopia's importance as an economic partner, it is imperative to maintain robust bilateral relations and ensure the stability of strategic systems.
Still, there are huge room for improvement. Due to its advantageous geographic and strategic position and commitment to infrastructure development, Djibouti is a major participant in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Through the BRI initiative, logistic service in Djibouti may be able to secure new investment opportunities and foster economic growth by reinforcing its international trade relations.
Conclusion
The Capability of the Country to handle freight has significantly increased obliged to Doraleh, one of Africa's most dynamic container ports, which also enables more seamless economic flows. On the other hand, Djibouti's logistical capabilities are improved by the Doraleh Multi-Purpose Port, which efficiently handles a range of cargo, including bulk commodities and automobiles.
