Historical Fiction meets Fantasy (Middle-Grade and YA)

When?: the Great Depression

Fantasy elements?: A boarding school full of occult secrets.

Elevator pitch: Nev Tallow receives an invitation to a boarding school in the middle of nowhere that no one has ever heard of, but it's the Great Depression and options are limited. Fantasy element?: Mysterious shadow magic that grants visions and can tear people apart.

Elevator pitch: Picture Inglorious Basterds but some of the ultraviolence is from extremely horrifying shadow magic. It's a roaring rampage of gay, Jewish, Black, and Algerian teens and young adults avenging themselves on Nazis and keeping them from acquiring the power of Eldritch horrors beyond our world. It's a tough balance to get right tonally, but imo they made it cathartic instead of trivializing.

What happened to Evie and Jacob Frye after Syndicate and JTR's DLC ?

Following the defeat of Crawford Starrick, Evie and Jacob continued to operate in London.

After her betrothal to Henry, Evie eventually relocated to India and became affiliated with the Indian's Brotherhood.

Did they have children? Yes, because in the Assassin's Creed Descendants (a group of assassins that operated and were based in London, in the 2010s) one of the members named Jackie O'Connell, is Evie's descendant.

I think that Evie and Henry had at least one daughter.

In 1888, afterr returning to London, Evie converged with Inspector Frederick Abberline, who brought her up to speed with the serial killer Jack The Ripper and the rest is history.

After the events of the DLC, Evie and Henry decided to move back to London.

I think that they took this decision because (these are my speculations):

They lost the favour of the Crown after queen Victoria's death

The first world war was approaching

The Templars were re-conquering power in London

We have several informations about Evie but what about Jacob ?

As Evie married Henry and moved with him to India Jacob remained in London to continue leading the Rooks and reinforce the Brotherhood.

I think that Jacob fall into a great depression after Evie's departure but he started healing after the birth of his son, Emmett Frye*.

Who is his partner ?

We have no informations so I made up some theories:

A fellow member of the Rooks

A childhood friend from Crawley

One of his apprentices

Where is she? I think that she died from childbirth and Jacob raised Emmett on his own. Jacob tried hard to be a better father than Ethan.

Emmet is the spitting image of his father but he is a shy and sweet kid. But when he wore his hood and hidden blade he became a great Assassins just like his father.

Probably Jacob sent Emmett away (to protect him) during the events of the DLC. The boy was still a teenager at that time because Lydia was born in 1893 and the events of the DLC took place during 1888.

After the Autumn of terror, Jacob suffered from PTSD but he recovered thanks to Evie who returned to live in London with him.

In 1893, Jacob became a grandfather and raised and trained his granddaughter Lydia to be an assassin (with the help of Evie).

Lydia Frye helped Winston Churchill to protect London from german spies and Templar agents during the first world war.

Lydia's fiancé, sam Crowder, asked Jacob first for her hand. Jacob wasn't impressed.

How the Frye's twins died ? Of old age surrounded by their grandsons and granddaughters.

*I don't know if this is Jacob's son name but I read this name in the fandom so I decided to use this one.

Warning: I'm reading the Spanish 2019 edition, and I'm a translation nerd so I'll be commenting a lot of that.

For starters, the title in spanish "El juego de los Vor", already lets us know something that the original doesn't explicitely: the "Vor" in the title is plural. Looking forward to those class dramas.

This edition, although very recent, is a reedition of the first one there was so it's fun to read the prologue: "Barrayar, coming soon in the year way way before you were born even". Man, I've already done and loved Barrayar. The world needs more characters like Cordelia.

Anyway, onto the story.

I love books that reward you for remembering specific details. For example, by remembering from passing comments that Kyril Island is somewhere that no one, no one ever wanted to be asigned to. In fact, wasn't someone sent there as punishment? My boy, what are they gonna do to you this time?

"Very good. But your most insidious chronic problem is in the area of... how shall I put this precisely... subordination. You argue too much." "No, I don't."

So fun, I adore him, your honour. I didn't know the notorious "you see your superiors as cattle" conversation was in this book, it was a nice surprise. They're not wrong lol

Miles not ten minutes into the island, already lying by ommision, pretending he doesn't know barrayaran greek: it's a surprise tool that will help us later.

Also, the sentence about barrayaran greek is the first instance so far of the word "barrayaran", which I looked forward to, since sometimes they translate as "barrayarano" and others as "barrayarés". I prefer the first one, so I'm in luck with this book :D

Overall enjoying the Miles suffering so far, I'm very pleased with the evolution of the character, he doesn't seem as wild and desperate as in The Warrior's Apprentice but he's still him.

Well, about his story, I tried to consolidate in a clueless bunch of chats I had with a friend of mine, and I hope it doesn't look too ridiculous💦

So basically he became Eno Cordova's apprentice (after Cere Junda) when he was about twelve years old and then, we all know what happened after that-Order 66-Ethan was hidden by his master in Bogano so he survived, and then for the next five years Ethan lived on his own in Bogano.

Thanks to BD-1’s company, he was able to survive until Cal Kestis came to Bogano and found him at 14BBY.

Ethan's first impression is that he's confident and poised, but once you get to know him well, you’ll realize he's actually a childish and boisterous person.

He's also very curious and likes to act cute around people - maybe it's his master's fault for spoiling him so much, considering Master Cordova's own curiosity is also very strong🙂‍↕️ Also resembling his master, Ethan is always gentle and smiling but can be intimidating when necessary, seemingly unreliable but with everything in his plan.

His mental condition wasn't very good for those five years, lets just say that living in isolation was too fatal for such a kid who needed emotional interaction so much, plus he had studied too much ancient history with his master and seen too many civilizations fall and rise so he was actually a bit of a nihilist(?) at the time, he was forced to live with the chaotic thoughts in his head causing him to become very paranoid for a time, for a while he was almost like a wild animal.

During a battle with a Bog Rat Ethan had to chop off his padawan braid to prevent the situation from getting worse (unfortunately it bit his padawan braid) , at that point he had a complete mental breakdown but at the same time finally realized that he couldn't go on like this, so Ethan finally decided to put himself back together and start trying to live the Jedi way again, even if in the end he might just die alone in Bogano. (He also has a claw mark on his back left by a Bog Rat, okay our boy really hates that creature🥲)

These five years of isolation have left him with some separation anxiety and possessive/controlling of those around him (although he hides it well)

Ethan is the type of person who expresses love directly to those around him and he enjoys physical contact.

Although Ethan always encourages those around him to express themselves, he prefers to work through his trauma on his own.(Similar to wild animals hiding their injuries for fear of being taken as prey)

Though it wasn't for long, Ethan developed a deep bond with his master, during those five years Ethan would often clutch his padawan braid and watch the holographic recordings left by Master Cordova over and over again, a habit he kept after he followed Cal to join the Mantis Crew, and you can occasionally see Ethan making a gesture with his hand to hold his no-longer-existent padawan braid when he in a daze or in thought.
