Western babes! Thanks to Indiewire, we now have directly from Pedro Almodovar the westerns he personally had in mind while making Strange Way of Life.
Part 1 of this list, mostly movies I personally believed would influence the film, is pinned to my page and I can report I got 2 right! Pedro listed The Wild Bunch and Red River as influences! I will be honest I have only seen a few of the westerns Pedro mentioned so maybe we can watch these together.
While my original list focused more on anti-westerns, Almodovar seems to have focused much more on traditional westerns. John Wayne stars in 4 of the 9 he listed for example. I find that fascinating honestly.
(once again tagging the ultimate western babe @the-ginger-hedge-witch if she wants to add these to her western studies)
But without further ado heres Part 2 of westerns that inspired Strange Way of Life:
The movie is strewn with references to Westerns that Almodovar has treasured for years.
The Wild Bunch
In Strange Way of Life a flashback between the two men, in which they fire at wine barrels and shrug off some prostitutes for their own plans, stems from Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch.
Babes!! Im so absolutely tickled that I spotted this and now it's confirmed. I wont go into details about the film because I listed it in part 1 but it was confirmed by Almodovar in the Indiewire interview so I've included it again here.
Almodovar says he envisioned Ethan Hawke’s character as an extension of archetypes in two John Sturges movies:
Last Train from Gun Hill
A marshal (Kirk Douglas) tries to bring the son of an old friend (Anthony Quinn), an autocratic cattle baron, to justice for his role in the rape and murder of the marshal's Native American wife.
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Lawman Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and outlaw Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas) form an unlikely alliance which culminates in their participation in the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
I haven't seen either of these Sturges films but just reading the plot summaries above and the plot summary of Strange Way it's pretty clear how they would tie together.
John Ford loomed large for the spectacular vistas, and Almodovar says he thought a lot about:
The Searchers
In this revered Western, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns home to Texas after the Civil War. When members of his brother's family are killed or abducted by Comanches, he vows to track down his surviving relatives and bring them home.
Cheyenne Autumn
The Cheyenne, tired of broken U.S. government promises, head for their ancestral lands but a sympathetic cavalry officer is tasked to bring them back to their reservation.
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Questions arise when Senator Stoddard (James Stewart) attends the funeral of a local man named Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) in a small Western town.
Wow. What an interesting list... I'm not sure I could have imagined the first two being included before reading the article honestly. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance makes really perfect sense, two men hide the history they have together until it comes out years later just like they seem to do in Strange Way.
The Searchers I have seen and while it is regarded as one of the best films ever in American film history it's also regarded as one of the most racist films in American film history. The portrayal of Native American's is truly hard to stomach. Critic Roger Ebert went so far as to accuse director John Ford of trying to somehow "justify the Native American genocide." So I would warn perhaps be cautious when viewing. I will say Cheyenne Autumn is perhaps somewhat Ford's response to The Searchers, it's regarded as a pretty mediocre film but lauded in film history because the actors portraying the Cheyenne are actually Navajo and speak Navajo in the film. Because no one else on set spoke Navajo, during scenes when Navajo is spoken the actors made dirty jokes and openly mocked production.
Pascal wears a green jacket that serves as a callback to the one Jimmy Stewart wears in:
Bend of the River
When a town boss confiscates homesteader's supplies after gold is discovered nearby, a tough cowboy (Jimmy Stewart) risks his life to try and get it to them.
This is another fantastic western and whats interesting is that the film centers on constantly keeping you guessing on which character is going to turn out good and which character is going to turn out bad. I wonder if Almodovar will bring that same thing to Strange Way..
Also, "Julia Adams stars as the woman who made the mistake of loving two men!" No, thats never a mistake babe hahaha.
Finally, Almodovar give three more films that inspired costumes for Strange Way:
El Dorado
Cole Thornton (John Wayne), a gunfighter for hire, joins forces with an old friend, Sheriff J.P. Hara (Robert Mitchum). Together with an old Indian fighter and a gambler, they help a rancher and his family fight a rival rancher that is trying to steal their water.
Red River
Dunson (John Wayne) leads a cattle drive, the culmination of over 14 years of work, to its destination in Missouri. But his tyrannical behavior along the way causes a mutiny, led by his adopted son (Montgomery Clift).
Vera Cruz
During the Mexican Rebellion of 1866, an unsavory group of American adventurers are hired by the forces of Emporer Maximilian to escort a countess to Vera Cruz.
Well there you have it! Let me know your thoughts. I really find this list incredible curious and interesting.

Actress, screenwriter, and producer Ansley Gordon chatted about her latest acting projects.
‘The Abigail Mysteries’
Gordon starred in “The Abigail Mysteries” opposite Emmy nominee Bret Green, which aired on Pure Flix and Great American Family. “It was great. This was my favorite film experience I’ve had,” she admitted. “It was my first time producing, which I really like. I’ve known Bret Green for over a decade.”
youtube
‘Designing Christmas With You’
Gordon wrote the screenplay for “Designing Christmas With You,” which airs tonight on Great American Family. “I just want the viewers to feel good when they watch it,” she said. “Similar to drinking a cup of hot cocoa or hot tea It’s a cozy, fun, and sweet little story.”
The synopsis is: With her career on the line, a decorator (Susie Abromeit) must work with an unexpected partner to showcase a house for an upcoming Christmas GALA. “It is really sweet, it’s a lot of fun, and it’s a more traditional rom-com that features a lot of family values and it is more about the relationships rather than the hijinks,” she said.
youtube
‘Romance at the Vineyard’
“Romance at the Vineyard” stars Susie Abromeit and Tim Ross in the leading roles as Allee and Ethan respectively. Cameron Robbie also stars as Nick.
The synopsis of this original movie is: When it looks as though Allee’s family vineyard, Merado, is at stake, she is forced to pair with a new friend in an effort to avoid selling the property. What she doesn’t know is that her newfound partner works for the corporate wine chain aiming to buy the property.
On writing the script for “Romance at the Vineyard,” she said, “That was very poignant and special. It was my first time working with Steve Jaggi in Australia, and he become one of my favorite producers to work with.”
youtube
The digital age
She opened up about being an actor and filmmaker in the digital age. “I struggle with it,” she admitted. “Social media is really tough for me because I am a really private person but I also want to promote projects.”
“I struggle with how much to share and how much to post, but I love getting to connect with people, especially when the new movies come out. That’s one of my favorite parts of my job. I love the Great American Family fans and viewers because they always make the movies trend,” she elaborated.
“Great American Family has welcomed me with open arms and it just felt more like a family,” she added.
On her plans for the future, she foreshadowed, “We have some things up our sleeves for 2024.”
Dream collaboration choices
On her dream collaboration choices in the entertainment industry, she listed Danica McKellar, Candace Cameron Bure, Marshall Williams, and Daniel Lissing. “Candace is a powerhouse, and I would love to collaborate with her as a producer, and learn from her behind-the-scenes,” she said. “I would love to do a crossover film with Danica.”
‘A Christmas Frequency’
Gordon also discussed doing the rom-com “A Christmas Frequency,” where she worked with Jonathan Stoddard, Denise Richards, and James Hyde. “I love James…I want to cast James in everything that I do. He is just amazing and he gives the best compliments. James has the best energy and the best light,” she said.
Stage of her life
On the title of the current chapter of her life, she revealed, “Creation and Abundance.”
Superpower of choice
If she were to have any superpower, it would be “time travel.” “As a writer, I would like to be able to go back and experience what things were like 50, 75, or 100 years ago. I would love that,” she said.
Success
On her definition of the word success, Gordon said, “Success means having the freedom to live, do, and create.”

Marvel Premiere #4
Cover Date: September 1972 On-Sale Date: June 27, 1972
Tumblr media
Doc continues to explore the mysteries brought to his attention last issue. It wasn't exactly anything voluntary as the impetus to do so is standing right in his living room. Barry (Windsor-) Smith continues art chores for one more issue. Archie Goodwin fills in as writer for this issue. Doc will get a semi-steady writer for the next few issues. The splash page credits include "Featuring concepts created by: Robert E. Howard." The central story is adapted (stolen) from The Shadow of Innsmouth and H. P. Lovecraft gets no credit or acknowledgement. The "protagonist" Ethan Stoddard is an obvious pastiche of the unnamed narrator. Even the blurb next to the title from the fictional Thanatosian Tomes sounds suspiciously like "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming" from The Call of Cthulhu. There are more similarities along the way. Let's see what Archie and Barry have in store for us.
Doc has just entered this Sanctum Sanctorum fresh from his fight with Nightmare in the dream dimension and getting slammed by an 18-wheeler in this dimension. He's about to find out who cast the ominous shadow in the window from the final panel of last issue. He knows it's not Wong, because he passed Wong's room and evidently Wong snores.
Tumblr media
Doc, being the polite host when he's not gruff and rude, refers to it as "the sounds of his slumber." Doc pulls back the curtain ready to cast a violent spell but only sees mild mannered Ethan Stoddard. Doc still hasn't cast any meaningful protection spells around his H.Q or even remembered to lock the door. Security, Doc! Security!
Ethan introduces himself and apologies for barging in and taking the liberty of building a fire. Never was someone so polite in their imposing themselves on someone else! Ethan tells Doc that he desperately needs his help. "Hang on minute, Ethan. I gotta take care of something else first." Doc rings a gong to (wake up and) summon Wong.
Tumblr media
Wong enters stage left and apologizes for falling asleep before Doc got back. As he puts it: "I did not intend to retire before your return, but such exhaustion overtook me--" Doc slips back into his old ways and gets all cranky with Wong. "Get me balms and bandages! Now!" says Doc. Wong scutters off and Doc realizes that he probably shouldn't have said that in that way. He goes after Wong and for the first time Doc apologizes for being a jerk! Wong, being the self sacrificing dude he is, tells Doc it's not necessary.
Tumblr media
Fortunately Wong won't be this big a pushover forever, but it'll take quite a while before we get there. Doc returns to the study and tells Ethan that along with things to plug up his wounds, Wong is gonna serve tea. Perhaps if Doc hadn't flown out of the E/R so fast his wounds would be in better shape and Wong wouldn't need to play nursemaid in addition to his other duties.
Ethan begins his story and Doc is all shell-like ears. Ethan and his fiancée, Beth (we meet her later,) are from a little town called Starkesboro (Innsmouth) and they both went to college together and came to the big city for graduate work. Beth was working on a thesis about the occult which is how they both found out about Doc. Beth returned to Starkesboro and started researching something called The Thanatosian Tomes. Beth put some of the crazy stuff she was researching in letters to Ethan and then stopped writing back completely and returning Ethan's missives unopened.
While Ethan tells his tale, Doc frets about the things happening. Him being really, really grumpy. Wong suddenly falling asleep. Ethan turning up out of the blue. Are these all a series of coincidences or is something going on.
Doc's like "that sounds interesting, but I gotta make sure you're not BSing me. I'm gonna probe you with my All-Purpose Amulet and then non-consensually remove your memory that I did it." Ethan appears to be telling the truth as we only see Ethan saying farewell to Beth as she departs on a bus. Then he wakes up to Wong getting Doc ready for a trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You seemed tired after I did all that probing of your... mind, yeah, that's it, mind. So we let you doze off. Now lets head to that hometown that you really don't like." As they leave, Wong frets in a similar way that Doc did as Ethan narrated his tale. Doc and Ethan hop on a bus. How mundane an activity for the arguably second most powerful magic user on the planet. Ethan is amazed that Doc is doing all this for a stranger, including, presumably paying for the bus tickets. Doc replies with the platitudes that no one in danger is a stranger. Also, this may be bigger than the two of you, so there's that.
The bus stops for lunch and Doc marvels at the pleasures of consuming phallic shaped food.
Tumblr media
Doc and Ethan arrive at Starkesboro amid appropriately freak weather. At the same time, Wong summons The Ancient One and asks him to go on a midnight rendezvous with Doc as he rudely refused to answer the phone earlier. (This happened off camera.) "Sure thing," replies The Ancient One and hangs up.
Back in Starkesboro, Doc comments how strange it is for church bells to be ringing at 11:00 PM. "Yeah, things are really effed up here, Doc," replies Ethan as they check into the crumbling old town's crappy only hotel. I'm guessing Doc is paying for this as well. Doc rings room service for tea and the man who checked them in brings it. "Is the rest of your staff attending the weird church service?" Doc asks. "This ain't no city hotel. I am the staff, you pretentious bozo!" the dude replies.
With that over and done with, Doc prepares for is assignation with his old buddy, The Ancient One. Trouble is, something's up and he has problems going ghost. With no mystic Viagra handy, he just has to struggle through and is finally able to rise to the occasion.
Tumblr media
Doc and The Ancient One banter back and forth about books, cults and sleeping obscenities. The Ancient One departs saying he heads to his own battle as Doc faces whatever it is that's going on below in the town. What is Yao up to?
Tumblr media
The next morning, Doc and Ethan are out and about in Starkesboro. Ethan is heading to the library when he asks a passerby if it's located where it used to be located. It turns out the passerby is an old buddy of Ethan's. But Lemuel looks a bit odd.
Tumblr media
Lemuel looks like he's going through the same metamorphosis that the people of Innsmouth endured as they turned into deep ones. He's not at the point where he needs to breathe through gills yet so he can still service the plot. Ethan heads to library while Doc gives Ethan a knowing wink. "You and your lady friend should have some time to yourselves in the quiet back corner of the stacks. I'll check out the church for a few minutes."
Ethan has a run-in with the small town librarian who gives the typical "you don't belong here" speech. Ethan goes on in search of Beth while Doc enters the church. There's something up there because it's messing up Doc's disguise spell somethin' fierce!
Tumblr media
That upside down cross makes the church a bit suspect. The altar with chains doesn't help any. Doc finds dried blood on the altar and realizes the lizard behind the cross means that the people here worship something called Sligguth. (I would say Dagon, but the next three issues have like three Dagons!) Behind the altar Doc finds a labyrinth of tunnels. Yeah, this church gets better by the second!
Camera two brings us back to Ethan and Beth. Beth gives the "go away outsider" comment. Ethan turns her around and: Oh, No! Beth has got that Starkesboro look!
Tumblr media
Ethan runs out of the library and into the church to cry to Doc. He notices the upside down cross and lizard. Doc explains what it means.
Tumblr media
Doc and Ethan are trapped in the church as the increasingly mutating townspeople gather outside. They are calling "Come out, Ethan!" This is not just a call for Ethan to leave the church or admit that secretly he likes Lemuel more than Beth. They are calling forth Ethan's Starkesboro look. They are successful and Ethan attacks Doc. The ungrateful sod!. Ethan explains that Doc's powers are being drained. Ethan and the townsfolk continue to put pressure on Doc to exhaust his power.
Tumblr media
Doc flies around the church using his cloak but eventually he's too weak to even control that. The townsfolk break into the church. Ethan and Beth are all lovey-dovey again in their reptilian splendor. Acting in concert the townsfolk knock Doc unconscious we leave with him chained to the altar awaiting the arrival of Sligguth.
Tumblr media
This was a lot of fun to read. Archie did well with his Innsmouth rip-off. In Innsmouth, the narrator gets stuck in the town "accidently" while here Ethan is forced to go back. The narrator doesn't have a sorcerer buddy or a fiancée to knock scaly boots with so Ethan seems to have things a bit better. Archie incorporated a nice bit of plot planning to draw Doc into this. It feels separate from the previous story, but we'll eventually see that the previous issue was a prelude to future events. It's well paced and we can probably blame Doc getting railed by a semi and then having to fight his favorite dream demon nearly to death for some dumb decisions on Doc's part. Barry continues to depict The Ancient One with a distinct lack of most clothing. Is he slowly attempting a naturist way of life or is it summer in Tibet with broken air conditioning? Part of me is sorry that this was Archie's only Doc story. The arc might have been more cohesive if he wrote a few more installments.

Today, November 8, in 1864, Abraham Lincoln was re-elected President of the United States, carrying all but three states, and receiving 78 percent of the Union soldiers' vote.
Tumblr media
I have written about the numbers extensively in the past and wont make this post boring by repeating it but would rather point out a few other things that Lincoln did on that day while all around him people were nervous wracks.
Thanks to nosy newspaper men and people like Noah Brooks or William Stoddard, we know that Abraham Lincoln went on about his day as usual. Breakfast, meeting people, running the country.
Sadly, Lincoln’s close confidante and secretary, John Hay, had opted to stay quiet. On the previous day he had written to John Nicolay:
“I have nothing to say until the day after tomorrow. God save the Republic!”
However, only because there was a presidential election going on, Abraham Lincoln could not simply close up shop and sit next to a telegraph as he had done four years earlier.
After all, there was a Mammoth ox named “General Grant” to take care of!
Massachusetts Republican Congressman Alexander H. Rice had chosen this date of all to officially “present” the ox – that Carlos Pierce had donated for the Sailors fair – to the president and Lincoln:
“The mammoth Ox, Genl Grant is presented to you today Will you pass him over to the Sailors Fair as a contribution
Alex H Rice “
Tumblr media
Abraham Lincoln dutifully replied on the same day:
“Yours received. I have no other notice that the ox is mine. If it be really so I present it to the Sailors Fair, as a contribution.
A LINCOLN”
Lincoln also took time to entertain his youngest son Tad for a while and annoy Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, by reading aloud writings of Nasby to which Stanton expressed indignation at the “nonsense”.
Abraham Lincoln also happily reported the capture of the pirate ship “Florida” in Brazil to Secretary of State William H. Seward and recognized Teodoro Manara as consul of the Republic of Guatemala at New York.
And because every day – even Election Day – has 24 hours, Lincoln made time to meet a young woman from Wisconsin who begged him to make arrangements for an exchange of her grandfather, William A. Collins (captain of Company D, Tenth Wisconsin Infantry) which he happily did with a note to Ethan A. Hitchcock that reads:
“Will Gen. Hitchcock please see & hear this lady about a special exchange A. LINCOLN”
And then, at some point close to midnight, Abraham Lincoln DID go to eat oysters, make inappropriate jokes and celebrate after the numbers were in.

187 US Climate Mayors commit to adopt, honor and uphold Paris Climate Agreement goals
STATEMENT FROM THE CLIMATE MAYORS IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT June 1st 2017
The President’s denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America’s cities.
As 187 US Mayors representing 52 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities’ current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy.
We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we’ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks.
The world cannot wait — and neither will we.

2017 Stoddard Bowl
The 4-5 Platt Panthers faced their cross town rival and the 8-1 Maloney Spartans. The overall series now belongs to the Maloney Spartans 30-29 with one tie, and Maloney winning only two games in the last 10 of the series (none while I went to Platt) After the first quarter of the game, the game was scoreless, with not much offense besides Maloney’s opening drive ending at Platt’s 10. The game continued to be a defensive game until Aurelio Marinelli hit Elijah Felton for an 18-yard TD pass to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead with 4:06 in the half. Maloney was able to respond with a 20 yard tipped pass to Chris Ifante from quarterback Larue Graham with a successful extra point to take a 7-6 lead over the Panthers right before the half ended. Maloney was able to carry their momentum into the second half scoring on a 13 yd TD run by Aden Valentine to extend their lead to 14-6 with 8:23 left in the third quarter. Platt would respond ensuing their next drive with some trickery as running back Ethan Dudley threw a HB pass for a TD to Jake Baker.  Later in the quarter with 10.9 seconds left, Maloney went a 4th and short that converted into a Cruz Lenhart touchdown with the extra point to extend the lead to 21-14 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Midway through the 4th and final quarter, Aden Valentine ran it in for another touchdown with a 5 yard run to extend their lead to 27-14 with 6:12 left in the game. Platt was not going away quietly. Aurelio Marinelli hit Tremayne Carter on a crucial 4th down for a TD with the extra point good cutting down the lead to 27-21 with 2:59 left. The Panthers however, were unable to cover their onside kick attempt. Platt was unable to stop Maloney & Maloney controlled the ball until the final whistle being in victory formation. The Panthers season is now over after starting the season 4-2. Platt has yet to make the playoffs since the 2014 season. With the win over crosstown rival, Maloney clinched the CCC Division 2 West Title. Maloney will now play Daniel Hand at Hand High School Tuesday night.

Funimation Updates English Dub Cast Listings For "JUNI TAISEN, Black Clover," "Kino's Journey," "GARO" and More
You know... anime doesn't always introduce everyone in the first episode. Or, sometimes, they're there, but they don't speak yet. Or, there are noteworthy one-off characters in later episodes. Many of Funimation's fall 2017 anime SimulDub announcements didn't announce all the voices with the initial reveals. So, they're gone back and added more of who's who.
See our updated cast lists for our Fall SimulDub season on our blog including JUNI TAISEN, Black Clover, Kino's Journey, GARO, and more! https://t.co/areW3HedNw http://pic.twitter.com/3ntRRG3jyH
