The surgeon and explorer John Rae was born on 30th September 1813 at the Hall o'Clestrain in Orphir on Orkney Islands.
Orkneyjar, a great site I use for sourcing information on the islands states that “John Rae is undoubtedly one of Orkney’s greatest unsung heroes.” and who am I to argue, they also point out that although his memorial is prominent in St Magnus Cathedral, few Orcadians, and indeed Scots in general, have heard of him.
John Rae was the son of John, factor on Sir William Honeyman's estate, and his wife Margaret (Glen). His father was appointed Orkney agent for the Hudson's Bay Company.
After qualifying in Edinburgh as a surgeon young John served on a Hudson's Bay vessel travelling to Canada. Ice forced him to stay over winter there and he loved the area and the wild type of life so much he remained as surgeon at the Moose Factory post on Hudson Bay.
He studied the ways of the local Cree Indians, gathering knowledge and skills from them. The Inuit called him "Aglooka" as he was the best snowshoe walker of his time. In 1849 he took over the Mackenzie river district at Fort Simpson and charted unknown territories on the north Canadian coast. He succeeded in proving the existence of a North West passage (a navigable route across the Arctic from the Atlantic to the Pacific) and searched for the lost Franklin expedition, who were also searching for the passage. Information from the Inuit given to Rae showed that Franklin's men had all perished and the bodies showed signs of cannibalism.
Of course his report made him very unpopular, author Charles Dickens published articles rejecting Rae’s conclusions and the manner in which he had reached them. According to Dickens, it was unthinkable that the English Navy "would or could in any extremity of hunger, alleviate that pains of starvation by this horrible means". The Englishman wrongly pointed the finger at the Inuit, whom he viewed very negatively, as evidenced by his writings, are more likely to have killed the expedition's survivors.
Due to the backlash from London Rae’s achievements were largely ignored for some time.
He retired in 1856 but continued exploration and work for telegraph companies to find routes through Greenland, Alaska and British Columbia. In 1860 he married Catherine Thompson. He died in London on 22nd July 1893 and his body was taken by steamer to Kirkwall for burial.
I revert you back to the OrkneyJar website for a much bigger picture of the life of John Rae http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/historicalfigures/johnrae/
Another dedicated site for the Orkneys also has a full account, concentrating mainly on his search for the Franklin mission, with more pictorial content https://www.orkneyology.com/john-rae.html

Local Information | Sovereign Estate & Letting Agents Berkhamsted
Together with the adjoining village of Northchurch it is separated from other towns and villages by lovely countryside, all of it in the Metropolitan Green Belt and much of it classified as being an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Berkhamsted's history goes back beyond Saxon times and its claim to fame includes strong royal, literary and teaching connections. It was in Berkhamsted, where earlier there was a Saxon fort, that William was handed the crown in 1066. Here, his half-brother, Count Robert of Mortain built a motte and Bailey Castle with two moats, where substantial ruins of the Castle still remain.
The hymnist and poet, William Cowper, was born in the Rectory, less than two hundred years before Graham Greene was born at St. John's, Chesham Road, a boarding house of Berkhamsted School. James Barrie often stayed here and the Llewellyn Davies children who lived in Egerton House were the inspiration for Peter Pan. A few doors down the High Street is where Clementine Hozier lived and attended the Girls' School, now part of Berkhamsted School. She became the wife of Sir Winston Churchill.
The valley route north through Berkhamsted has always been of major importance. Originally the ancient Roman road (Akeman Street), it later became a turnpike road for the Sparrows Herne Turnpike Trust.
The Grand Junction, now the Grand Union Canal, was opened through Berkhamsted in 1798. Up until the Second World War the canal was a principal artery of the industrial revolution linking London with the West Midlands. The Duke of Bridgewater, who inspired the canal system in England, had his home up on the hill at Ashridge.

House prices fall by the most in south-east England, says Halifax
Getty Images
By Michael Race
Business reporter, BBC News
The value of a home in south-east England has dropped by ÂŁ15,500 over a year after the region recorded the sharpest fall in house prices in July.
Halifax, the High Street lender, said average house prices in the area, which includes the home counties, fell 3.9%.
House prices in Wales, once the beneficiary of the pandemic “boom”, also tumbled.
Overall, however, Halifax said the UK’s housing market was showing resilience, despite higher mortgage costs.
It said average prices fell by 2.4% in the year to July, valuing a typical home at ÂŁ285,044. That is slower than the 2.6% decline recorded in the year to June.
Despite the falls, prices remain much higher than before the Covid pandemic.
Some regions saw sharper drops than others. The value of a home in south-east England dropped to ÂŁ382,489 in July.
Wales, which Halifax said had seen “some of the most rapid growth in house prices witnessed during the pandemic ‘boom'”, recorded one of the largest annual falls at 3.3% to £214,495.
Greater London also saw prices drop by 3.5% in July, but the average price is much higher at ÂŁ531,141 compared to other regions.
Average house prices fell in almost all parts of the UK in July apart from in the West Midlands, where they remained unchanged.
The north east of England remains the cheapest place to buy a home with the average price being ÂŁ167,594.
Commenting on the housing market in the UK, Kim Kinnaird, director at Halifax Mortgages, which is owned by Lloyds Banking Group, said it “continues to display a degree of resilience in the face of tough economic headwinds”.
“In particular, we’re seeing activity among first-time buyers hold up relatively well, with indications some are now searching for smaller homes, to offset higher borrowing costs,” she added.
Last week, the Bank of England raised interest rates for the 14th time in a row. The increase from 5% to 5.25% will lift the cost of borrowing money for many mortgages.
On Monday, the average two-year fixed mortgage rate ticked lower to 6.84%, while the average five-year deal was unchanged at 6.35%, according to financial data firm Moneyfacts.
But there have been suggestions that the current interest rate level could be the peak for consumers, with banks and building societies starting to cut mortgage rates, according to Laura Suter, head of personal finance at AJ Bell.
Andrew Bailey, the Bank of England’s governor, told the BBC there was an “adjustment” to house prices going on. But he cautioned: “I think we should avoid preaching crisis at this point, it’s not that.”

Last week, the Nationwide building society said that house prices in July recorded their sharpest fall in 2009 but they remained ÂŁ45,000 higher than February 2020, the last month before the first lockdown.
During the height of the Covid pandemic, house prices soared as people who were forced to work from home at the time decided they wanted more space inside and out. The market was also boosted by a stamp duty holiday.
Halifax’s Ms Kinnaird said while house prices will continue to fall into next year, she expects “a gradual rather than a precipitous decline”.
“And one that is unlikely to fully reverse the house price growth recorded over recent years, with average property prices still some £45,000, or 19%, above pre-Covid levels,” she added.
Marc von Grundherr, director of Benham and Reeves estate agents, said considering the surge in house prices during the pandemic, “it is actually quite remarkable that the market is still standing so strong given the wider economic picture”.
But LSL Property Services, one of the UK’s largest providers of mortgage and valuation services, warned that its full-year profits would be “substantially lower” than previously forecast due to rising interest rates hitting homebuying activity.
The company’s share price tumbled by 13.8% on the warning.
LSL Property Services, which owns mortgage adviser Primis and estate agency Your Move, said that “the larger than expected increase” in the Bank of England base rate in June – when it rose by half percentage point – had “had a material impact on the mortgage market”.
Nationwide said prices had dropped by 3.8% in the year to July. The figure paints a slightly different picture to Halifax’s figures, which suggest prices have fallen by 2.4%.
Each lender bases their data on their own mortgage approvals, meaning their calculations may differ.

What happens if I miss a mortgage payment?
If you miss two or more months’ repayments you are officially in arrears
Your lender must then treat you fairly by considering any requests about changing how you pay, such as lower repayments for a short time
They might also allow you to extend the term of the mortgage or let you pay just the interest for a certain period
However, any arrangement will be reflected on your credit file, which could affect your ability to borrow money in the future

Meditations on a Painting by Edward Hopper | Oneshot
VACATION’S ALL I EVER WANTED: Write a oneshot about your character going on vacation! (800 words)
Date: Sometime in 1973 Featuring: Rosalind Peterson, Richard Peterson Warnings: A brief reference to falling from a tall building, but only hypothetically
Rosalind Peterson, age thirteen, receives a cultural education.
The Petersons did not take vacations. Saving the world was more than a full-time job, and their daughter saw plenty of it anyway. There was no time and it would be a frivolous use of the Society’s money to book a trip to the beach or the mountains— and the Petersons knew they could hardly forget about their duties long enough for a vacation to be worth it. But they did travel. And quite often, their daughter traveled with them. And on this specific occasion, while his wife discussed top secret assignments not even he was privy to, Richard Peterson decided it necessary that said daughter receive a bit of a cultural education while the family briefly stopped in New York for a meeting with HQ.
At thirteen, Rosalind did not yet know about the Society. She only knew that her parents had very important international jobs that she should not ask questions about. So she didn’t. She watched the skyscrapers roll by the window of the taxi cab with her wide, bespeckled eyes and tried to imagine all of the people who worked in them, likely doing equally important, equally mysterious international jobs.
She didn’t ask where they were going. By now, she had learned to deduce rather than ask, to find the puzzle pieces herself and fit them together. The cab was moving west, past lively neighborhoods with children playing in the streets over a bridge into a bustling, industrious downtown. And now it was headed north, the skyscrapers beginning to thin and the steel-gray office buildings fading into ivory apartment buildings that reminded Rosalind of London.
The building they stopped in front of couldn’t have been an apartment complex, though. It looked like a palace.
Rosalind stopped in her tracks on the steps into the museum, eyes wide as saucers, mouth hanging slightly open. It was difficult to impress a stoic, serious girl like Rosalind, but the Metropolitan Museum of Art had succeeded, and she hadn’t even walked in yet.
“Come along, there’s not much time,” Richard urged. Rosalind followed dutifully.
She inspected each painting, each statue carefully, with the serious nature of an estate agent appraising a property for value. She said nothing. Richard said nothing. Each stared at the art work in question, and then, as though on cue, moved onto the next after an appropriate period of time had passed.
Rosalind did not believe she had a cold relationship with her father, but they had never quite been the type to dance on tiptoes or exchange warm words of affection. She felt closest with him in moments like this: both of them standing side-by-side, doing very grown-up and very sophisticated things together, like they were old colleagues instead of a middle-aged man and his teenage daughter. They didn’t speak, save for the occasional thoughtful hum from Richard that made Rosalind pay extra attention.
“What do you think of this one?” Richard asked suddenly, as the pair stopped in front of a painting in the modern section of the museum
The young girl stared at the painting. Office in a Small City, by Edward Hopper. No, Rosalind didn’t like it at all.
Rosalind wanted to choose her words carefully, though. Her father was inviting her to a very grown-up conversation between two culturally-educated people. “This one is very boring,” she finally said after much consideration. Her eyebrows furrowed critically, her hands clasped behind her back. “And a bit unrealistic. It looks as though those windows don’t have any glass in them. And he’s got nobody else there. It’s got to be the middle of the morning, based on the placement of the shadows— are we supposed to believe he’s come into the office on a weekend? In that case, he must have quite a lot of important work to do, and yet his desk seems entirely empty.”
Richard just hummed maddeningly, inscrutably thoughtfully.
“Perhaps he has come into the office on the weekend. But can you be so sure? Remember what we say about jumping to conclusions, Lindy.”
Rosalind’s cheeks heated slightly. “We shouldn’t do it.”
“Yes, exactly. But those are some interesting observations.” He spoke slowly, carefully, and Rosalind hung on every word. “Perhaps Mr. Hopper intended that the windows not appear to have glass in them— do you see how the subject almost seems more connected to the world outside his window than the work in front of him? And perhaps it is intentional that he appear so solitary
Mr. Hopper’s work is often believed to be about deep, abject loneliness.”
Rosalind blinked, and she finally could put her finger on why she didn’t like the painting. It had awakened some strange, bewildering feeling in her that she couldn’t identify. There was too much space, too much light. The man was far too isolated, like he might fall out through one of the glassless windows into the vast city below and hardly anyone would notice. Perhaps it was a painting about loneliness.
Perhaps, Rosalind thought, she understood loneliness.
That didn’t mean she liked to be confronted with it.
“Well, that is very sad for him,” she said finally, swallowing down a strange urge to cry despite being a whole thirteen years old and far, far too mature for that.
“Yes, it is.”
And with that, they moved onto the next painting, and the next, and the next, and afterward there was afternoon tea, and a trip to the top of the Empire State Building.
“I still don’t understand why there wasn’t any glass,” Rosalind said suddenly, looking out over the cityscape through her binoculars.
“What’s that, Lindy?”
“In the painting. By Mr. Hopper. You said it was a painting about loneliness, but you also said perhaps Mr. Hopper wanted him to be more connected to the world outside his window than the work in front of him. That doesn’t make sense.”
Either Rosalind was seeing things, or an amused smile had crept up onto her father’s features.
“Very astute,” he said, looking out onto the clusters of buildings that lay before them, all the tiny people moving in streams like minnows in a pond. “I didn’t realize you were still thinking about that. I suppose artists can be contradictory sometimes. Or perhaps Mr. Hopper had thought of a specific kind of loneliness. Like the feeling of being alone in a room full of people.”
“But there were no other people in that picture.”
“No other people that we could see. But there was a whole world in those buildings beyond, wasn’t there?”
Rosalind didn’t know what to make of that, so she just nodded and picked up her binoculars again. But it stuck in her mind the rest of the day. And the rest of that trip to New York. And for a very long time after that, peering out the window of her very small office in a small school in a very, very small city where she has come to spend the rest of her days.

There are a few steps that you should take as a landlord to secure good tenants. You should clean the property well and address some small repairs. Make sure the outside looks great and that the property is 100% safe. Consider whether you need a property manager or you can do the work alone. Finally, make sure you have adequate rent so that you don’t lose on potential tenants.

Lilian Harvey (born Helene Lilian Muriel Pape, 19 January 1906 – 27 July 1968) was an Anglo-German actress and singer, long based in Germany, where she is best known for her role as Christel Weinzinger in Erik Charell's 1931 film Der Kongreß tanzt.
Harvey was born in 1906, in Crouch End, North London. Her mother, Ethel Marion (Laughton), was English, and her father, Walter Bruno Pape, was a German businessman. At the beginning of World War I the family found itself in Magdeburg, and as they were unwilling and unable to return to England, Harvey was sent to live with an aunt at Solothurn in Switzerland. After the war, the Papes lived in Berlin, where Lilian took her high-school diploma (Abitur) in 1923. She began her career by attending the dance and voice school of the Berlin State Opera and assumed her grandmother's maiden name (Harvey) as her professional surname.
After an engagement as a revue dancer in Vienna in 1924, Harvey received her first movie role as the young Jewish girl "Ruth" in the Austrian film The Curse directed by Robert Land. Subsequently, she starred in many silent films. In 1925, she was cast in her first leading role in the film Passion by Richard Eichberg, side by side with Otto GebĂŒhr.
Because of her training as a singer, Harvey was able to pursue a successful acting career during the initial talkie era of the early 1930s. Her first movie with Willy Fritsch was the operetta film Chaste Susanne in 1926. Harvey and Fritsch became the "dream couple" of German movies in the early 1930s with the romantic love story Waltz of Love; she was called the "sweetest girl in the world" by the press, after a song featured in the film. She and Fritsch starred in a total of 11 movies together, among them the criminal comedy Hokuspokus (1930) after a play by Curt Goetz, directed by Gustav Ucicky, which became a box office success. An English version (The Temporary Widow) was filmed simultaneously, starring Lilian Harvey and Laurence Olivier, who thereby made his film debut. She also appeared in the musical film The Three from the Filling Station of the same year, which also became a major success and gave the young actor Heinz RĂŒhmann his break. During this period she became the muse of the composer Charles Koechlin who, in his sixties, wrote numerous pieces in her honour; initially flattered, she soon became disturbed by his apparent obsession with her.
In 1931, Harvey played the leading part in the film Der Kongreß tanzt (The Congress Dances); her song Das gibt's nur einmal written by Werner R. Heymann became a most popular melody. Her subsequent movies were filmed in English and French versions, so Harvey became known outside of Germany. She was invited to Hollywood and made four movies for the Fox Film Corporation, but these were not as successful as her German films. She eventually abandoned George White's Scandals, leading executives to cast Alice Faye in the part, and Faye became an overnight sensation. After leaving Hollywood she appeared in a British film Invitation to the Waltz. In 1935, Lilian Harvey returned to Germany.
After the war, Harvey moved to Paris. In the following years, she travelled as a singer through Scandinavia and Egypt. In 1949, she returned to West Germany giving several concerts. Harvey retired to the resort town of Antibes on the French Riviera, where she operated a souvenir shop and raised edible snails.
From 1953 to 1957, Harvey was married to Danish theatre agent Hartvig Valeur-Larsen.
As she was still in touch with her Jewish colleagues, Harvey was placed under close observation by the Gestapo.[citation needed] Nevertheless she pushed the career of her protégé, director Paul Martin, performing in his screwball comedy Lucky Kids (1936) and further successful movies for the UFA until 1939, such as Seven Slaps, the biographical film Fanny Elssler (1937) together with Willy Birgel and Capriccio; as well as Frau am Steuer in 1939.
In June 1937 Harvey had helped the choreographer Jens Keith, prosecuted under the homosexual acts Paragraph 175, by posting a bail for him. Released from custody, Keith escaped to Paris; this led to a stern interrogation by the Nazi authorities. He subsequently returned to Berlin and UfA. In spring 1939, Harvey left Germany and her real-estate fortune, which was confiscated[citation needed]; she was to be deprived of her German citizenship in 1943 because she had performed for French troops.
Harvey went to live at her residence in Juan-les-Pins in Vichy France. In France she made two movies in 1940 – Serenade and Miquette (her last), both directed by Jean Boyer. After the occupation of southern France by German forces in November 1942, Harvey emigrated to the USA spending most of the time in Los Angeles working as a volunteer nurse, but also went on tour performing in NoĂ«l Coward's Blithe Spirit.
From 1953 to 1957, Harvey was married to Danish theatre agent Hartvig Valeur-Larsen.
Lilian Harvey died of liver failure on 27 July 1968 in Juan-les-Pins, aged 62. She was buried at the Robiac Cemetery in Antibes.

MHA instructs agents for the sale of Elthorne Village, Hanwell
London: 05 May 2021 – MHA London has today announced the appointment of Allsop and Colliers to market its mixed-use residential-led development, Elthorne Village. Located on Trumpers Way, Hanwell, in the bustling and increasingly popular borough of Ealing, Elthorne Village creatively combines attractive quality residential (Elthorne Place) and commercial use (Elthorne Works) on one site.
This exceptional co-location scheme has been sensitively designed by award-winning Patel Taylor Architects to reflect the site’s industrial heritage, whilst embracing the adjacent green space of the neighbouring park. Planning permission was secured by MHA London for the redevelopment of this long underutilised industrial site in July 2020.
Offering 149,812 sq ft of mixed private/affordable residential space, Elthorne Place will deliver 213 beautifully designed dwellings comprised of 75 one-bedroom, 115 two-bedroom and 15 three-bedroom apartments, along with an additional eight three-bedroom townhouses which will have access to both private and communal amenity space. Underground parking is also included at 0.5 spaces per residential unit.
Elthorne Works will provide 43,432 sq ft of extensive modern, light and flexible workspace, with the opportunity for an incoming purchaser to possibly benefit from the new Class E ‘Commercial Business and Service’ use class which covers a wide range of uses including: retail, financial and professional services, cafĂ©s and restaurants, offices, health centres, nurseries and recreation to name a few.
With a guide price of £22 million for the entire project, although the residential and commercial elements may be sold separately, the development offers a rare opportunity to acquire a development site of approximately 0.77 hectares with views over Brent River Park and Elthorne Park. The surrounding area comprises a mixture of residential houses and apartments, light industrial accommodation and community parkland while nearby Hanwell, West Ealing and Boston Manor provide an array of amenities including supermarkets, shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.
Hossein Abedinzadeh, Founder of MHA London commented on the sale: “This project offers a rare combination of a fantastic location opposite a park, off-street parking, as well as easy access to both Crossrail and the Piccadilly Line – a truly unique development.”
Andrew Boyd, partner at Allsop commented: “Elthorne Village provides an appealing investment opportunity in a well-established area of west London. With cutting-edge design, excellent transport links, including access to Crossrail services from Hanwell Station and a potential to create a variety of on-site facilities, it represents a compelling offering for investors and developers.”
Andrew White, Head of Residential at Colliers added: “Elthorne Village is located in an increasingly popular part of the capital, with good commuter links and amenities close by. These type of opportunities are rare at the moment and our client has secured a fantastic consent, designed by an award winning architect.”
