Okay, switching it up from Forever…and spoilers for the newest Odyssey album (but I will be vague)
I lowkey kind of saw it coming…but like…I have hope cause…Jules needed her character arc, she needs growth and I think her actions having really hard consequences will help in that. Yes, it might still take her time but she needs that growth, cause goodness knows Buck has had a *lot* of growth so it’s her turn now 😂
(Also more spoilery here but, Buck just…having trust issues and needing to trust people and for them to be honest cause Skint lied to him so much, he was literally raised by lies, he needs honesty and truth now…I just…it makes so much sense and like ow but also good on him for standing his ground in that and being honest, even though it was not easy 🥲)

honestly even if I’m in misery over this week’s elimination I am living in hope we see Jarvis on Titans because he is so stunningly talented and his comedy is hilarious! and he has the perfect brand so if he could believe in himself like the fans do, you just know he can take over the entire world

new jersey "19th century" "eclecticism"
It's always funny to me when new wealth tries to imitate old wealth, but in a very specific way: by trying to reproduce old ways of building that are no longer viable via mass produced building materials and contractors who are better than average but still not quite in the legion of the bespoke. It's rarely the case that houses are fully "custom" these days -- the amalgamation of all the different parts in a new formation is the "customization" at work. As we can see in this example, this is a truth that is often covered up by excessive decorating.
Tumblr media
This 5 bedroom, 6.5 bathroom house, built in 1997 (shocker) will run you an extremely reasonable $3.5 million big ones, but I say extremely reasonable because it wants to be a $10 million house but doesn't quite get there - after all, it's made with drywall. The architectural style is not really anything in particular -- though the front entrance would like to recall the Tudors. Really it is trying to emulate an existing pastiche style, namely the eclecticism of the 19th century. It also doesn't do this well.
Tumblr media
No stately manor is complete without dueling staircases. Also, I don't know how to explain it, but every room in this house longs to be a bathroom. Or a powder room. A really big one. It's probably the floor, and the wallpaper. This is just the appetizer for the main attraction:
Tumblr media
Jules Verne larping is so rare in McMansion Hell that you have to commend them for trying. I'm kind of obsessed.
Tumblr media
This room is so important to me. It's like if an Olin Mills (dating myself here) set was an entire room. A sense of watching someone in one's own house, performing "dinner." Also I would slay as the swan knight, I have to say, so I get it.
Tumblr media
What happened to baskets hanging from the ceiling and powder blue walls and porcelain lined up on the picture rail?
Tumblr media
I have seen columns terminating into soffits that would make Scamozzi cry.
Tumblr media
In Big America bathing and lavishing is a spectator sport.
Tumblr media
Ok, again, the palette of this house is basically The Polar Express mixed with a very bizarre hotel lobby.
Tumblr media
The chimney hole is sending me because that does appear to be a working chimney. Like, can you see the smoke come out? Who knows!
Anyway, happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and I'm especially thankful to the folks who sponsor me on Patreon! If you want to see more scenes from this house, that's the place to do it!
If you like this post and want more like it, support McMansion Hell on Patreon for as little as $1/month for access to great bonus content including a discord server, extra posts, and livestreams.

thinking about the infantiliztation and/or formalization of 19th-century women's clothing to modern audiences
like
our entire reference point for "wearing long skirts and outfits with decoration like lace, embroidery, appliques, etc." is either formalwear or fictional characters in children's media like Disney princesses. women's clothing is just so radically different now- not that those elements don't exist, but they're much less common in everyday clothing than they once were. some form of simple trousers and an equally simple top are de rigeur for everyday attire, and anything else is Fancy
combined with the fact- which is true! -that a lot of what survives to end up in big museums belonged to wealthy people, this ends up in wild assumptions like "basically our entire idea of what the Victorians dressed like is just Rich People Clothes really"
which has led to the eternal cry of "but what did NORMAL people wear?!?!?!" that will not be satisfied with real examples of middle or even working-class everyday clothing because it still looks too "fancy" to modern eyes
not Victorian, but a great example of this is what Abby Cox wore to portray a milliner (hatmaker) in Colonial Williamsburg. a working, middle-class woman:
Tumblr media
(ignore the facial expression there)
this is the exact outfit she sported in a video that apparently got responses like "but that's just what rich women wore!" and it is, in fact, everyday attire for a working person. a person who worked in the fashion industry, it's true, but still
I had someone ask me about how to find examples of casual Victorian clothing because they were at their wits' end trying to research it. and I had to tell them that...what they were looking at WAS casual. in the sense of Clothing For Everyday Wear That's Not Especially Formal. there's nothing inherently formal, or exclusive to the wealthy, about a matched bodice-and-skirt dress, instep-length, with some trim. or even a trimmed blouse and skirt. obviously women working the absolute hardest outdoor, physical jobs might have adopted occupational trousers or similar, but we don't all dress like construction or farm workers all the time nowadays. why would they have back then?
Tumblr media
Laundresses, probably 1850s or early 60s. Note that I can STILL date the picture based on their outfits and hair, and these are the furthest things from wealthy socialites.
Tumblr media
Maid scrubbing steps, probably 1870s or 1880s. Note pleated trim on her skirt and what appears to be a peplum at the back of her bodice.
also, not all working women worked physical jobs any more than we do today. here is a teacher around the turn of the 20th century:

Teachers, 1887
Tumblr media
"Breton Seamstresses," 1845, by Jules Trayer
were there differences in quality, type and quantity of trim, fit, etc? obviously. but some people are convinced that the basic outfit format can't POSSIBLY have been something ordinary women wore, because it looks formal and/or princess-y in a modern context

some funny parts from lorenzo & arthur’s interview by autohebdo:
Could you share an anecdote that would help us understand what Charles was like as a child?
Lorenzo: Arthur and I might have different perspectives because I’m nine years older than Charles. My best friend was Jules Bianchi, and we spent a lot of time fooling around on a circuit, having fun, and testing all kinds of karts and tires. Charles was always in the middle of it all and wanted to do the same as us. Even back then, he was extremely competitive, always trying to race against the older kids and beat them. He had the same qualities that define him today: elegance and class in his approach. He is ultra-competitive, but in a fair way. I’ve seen him break tennis rackets, but always out of frustration with himself rather than others. He’s a very fair player.
Arthur: Umm… fair play? Maybe not so much with me! (Laughs) Especially when we played PlayStation—he always gave me the broken controller! That little prick! (Laughs)
Charles became a pianist, and Arthur, you also play music. Who is the best musician in the family?
Arthur: In the beginning, Charles was terrible at piano, I have to say! (Laughs) I remember the first time he touched a piano at our country house—someone was teaching him a song. I was behind him, and he was struggling a lot. Then, I took over and played the song perfectly on the first try. (Laughs) So he gave up and switched to the guitar, which was an even bigger disaster!
Lorenzo: Especially for us!
Arthur: Acoustic guitar, electric guitar… he tried everything! (Laughs) But he eventually got better. He later returned to playing piano, learned much faster, and now he’s actually very talented!
But who is the best musician?
Arthur: We play very different styles. I prefer classical music, while Charles plays more calm, nostalgic songs—he likes that kind of atmosphere. (Laughs) In terms of technique, we are quite similar.
Lorenzo: I’ll be the judge since piano isn’t really my thing. Arthur has perfect pitch, meaning he can replay any song quite easily. He never wanted to take piano lessons, which disappointed our grandmother, who would have loved a great pianist in the family. But Arthur never liked the idea of sitting next to a teacher for long hours. So on one hand, Arthur has a natural talent but only plays when he wants. On the other hand, Charles worked hard at it, especially during the COVID lockdown in 2020, and he’s become really impressive, considering how busy he is!
Between the two of you, who is the best uncle to Leo, Charles’ dog?
Arthur: I think we’re both not great uncles!
Lorenzo: We tried our best, but Leo is a very spoiled dog. He demands a lot of attention—he doesn’t sleep alone and isn’t exactly the cleanest. I decided to take care of him during the day but not at night. He’s adorable, but not always easy to manage!
Arthur: He goes crazy every time he sees me, but I’ve never actually taken him home. I’m the fun uncle—I only see him for the good times! (Laughs)
