Owl House is a surprisingly dark show but still very much kid appropriate. I think the themes about grief and self harm as well as like. exploring topics like ableism, religion, death, and abuse is really neat.

I do think it'll be funny in five to ten years when people who were lil while watching the show revisit it later and are like WHat the fuck did I watch about certain things tho, because I really didn't pick up on the Vibes with Terra and Raine or like some of the nuances and I was already 19 when the show started coming out HAUIH.

you know what im excited for? for byler s5 to change how we view them in the other seasons. i know it feels we’ve caught every detail, but i just know s5 will reveal more about them (especally mike) and even more things will make sense.

rewatching football matches isn't new to itoshi rin. as a player for the national team, he gave himself the responsibility of analyzing and observing the opponent's tactics in order to think of possible plays that would shut them down. 

thirty minutes into the game, rin can't help but furrow his brows. the most skilled player on the team is about to make a goal that got the team the first half of the match. concentration was written on his face, completely focused and silent. there he is, reeling back his feet, about to shoot the ball in the goal. soft patters on the floor echoed in the loving, but rin was too focused on the game to notice.

oh great, they've talked the day before. "but what if i'm busy?" 

"rin-nii doesn't do anything but soccer. what are you busy about?" sometimes he hates how kei, his sweet little sister, is so blunt with her words. but because she's cute, rin decides that he'll let this one slide. 

realizing that he's playing a losing game, he had no choice but to nod at her. pursing his lips in a forced smile, rin nodded to kei. "how about you go pick out your outfit today while i go ask him?"

itoshi sae, the prodigy of japan and a valuable gem in the soccer world, rarely gets days off. instead of resting, he would rather spend his time practicing alone in the field. however because of a promise he made yesterday, his cleats are left alone in his locker. 

itoshi sae has been glaring at his phone for three minutes. getting calls is a rare occurrence for him. other than the calls his manager makes and the spam calls he gets from a certain demon, his phone stays silent most of the time. 

so why is his brother, the one whose last decent conversation with him was before he left for spain, calling him on a random tuesday morning. before he could answer the call, the ringing stopped, quickly followed by pings.

an amusement park. of course, of all places in the world, in japan, kei would pick out the amusement park. sae doesn't necessarily hate the place, he just deems it too bright and … bright.

"sae-nii!" kei ran towards him, immediately hugging his legs. rin follows behind, a small pink bag hung over his shoulder. if the two brothers made eye contact, they certainly didn't make it obvious. silently handing the bag over to sae, rin ruffles kei's hair. "okay you gremlin, nii-chan's here. i'm gonna go now."

"where are you going?" kei frowned at him. "i thought we're all gonna play together?" 

if rin was thinking about leaving, now he was not. one look at kei's sad face is enough to trigger all phases of guilt he'll experience if he chooses to walk away. "but i'm busy, kei." 

the two brothers were staring intently at their youngest sister, observing her every expression. once they noticed the trembling of her lips and the tears starting to pool around her eyes, telepathically, the brothers made a temporary truce to try and get along today. 

"rin's just gonna go buy the tickets, kei. he's not leaving, right rin?" sae picked her up, patting her back as he stared at rin, silently telling him to play along and just get the tickets.

"right. c'mon don't cry, i'll be back with the tickets and we'll go to your favorite rides." 

kei's eyes seemed to sparkle at that. "all of them?" 

"of course, kei. i saw a dango stand, let's go get one." sae steered away, ending the conversation before they agreed to more of kei's ideas. rin turned away, too, after waving at kei, to walk to the booth and purchase the tickets.

sae and rin may not get along due to their contrasting ideals and dreams but for their little sister, they'll always be willing to set aside their 'strained relationship'. after all, her happiness will never not be important for both of the brothers.

Upsidedown 10 Dimensions Theory

Okay, with the recent flood of dimension/time travel theories following Stranger Thing’s references to A Wrinkle in Time, Interstellar, Arrival, etc, (espec w/ @will80sbyers theories which are super interesting so GO READ THEM), I decided to toss my hat into the ring.

What if the Upsidedown as we see it—the one that mirrors Hawkins, the one that’s “stuck” on November 6th, 1983—isn’t just an “alternate dimension,” but another timeline? A timeline where November 6th was the day that everything was destroyed?

^ This video was my first introduction to dimensions, time travel, dimensional travel, etc. Perhaps there’s a better video breaking it down out there, but this video has shaped my understanding of the dimensions.

If you don’t want to watch the video, here’s a mildly-butchered explanation of the relevant dimensions.

3rd Dimension—*our* dimension, the one we all exist within, which has length, width, and depth

4th Dimension—Time, think of it as *our* Timeline

5th Dimension—Multiple Timelines

6th Dimension—dimension above the fifth

I don’t really have a good way to explain the 6th dimension, and I do recommend watching the video—I’ll probably be consuming more dimension-related explanations to get a better grasp on the concepts, but here’s the basics.

To travel through a dimension, you fold the dimension above it.

The travel through the 3rd dimension, for example, you’d fold the 4th dimension, Time. But folding time, you could travel throughout space instantaneously—in no time at all.

If you want to travel through Time—specifically, *our* timeline, you’d fold the 5th dimension (Timelines, plural).

If you wanted to travel throughout Timelines (the 5th dimension)—alternate “universes” where things are ever so slightly different, where perhaps you have brown eyes instead of green, or you got a promotion instead of getting fired (or, on a grander scale, the dinosaurs never went extinct)—you’d have to fold the 6th dimension, because you’re trying to travel throughout the 5th dimension.

So… after I reviewed how dimension/dimensional travel/time travel could theoretically work (assuming stranger things chooses semi-realism), one thing was bothering me—which dimension is El folding when she creates portals to the upsidedown? And which exactly *is* the upsidedown, anyway?

If El was folding the 4th dimension, Time, then the Upsidedown would have to be a physical location in space, in our universe. Another planet, maybe, or something like it. But why would another planet mirror Hawkins exactly? Could Venca/Henry have transformed the planet to match Hawkins?

If so, why?? And why have the upsidedown exactly resemble Hawkins on November 6th, even though time hasn’t ACTUALLY stopped flowing in the Upsidedown?

Because we know time isn’t actually flowing differently in the Upsidedown and the Rightsideup. If it was flowing at a different rate, for example, Nancy and the Hawkins crew wouldn’t have been able to coordinate their attack against Venca, because time wouldn’t have been moving properly for the crew in the Upsidedown.

Not to mention, we know that the place El banished Henry to didn’t look like the Upsidedown.

So, what gives?

From the beginning of Stranger Things, when Mr. Clarke broke was explaining theoretical science to the boys after Will’s funeral in Season 1, these alternate locations were framed as “universes.” Mr. Clarke talks about multiple worlds, infinite variations on one another. What he’s describing sounds an awful lot like the multiple timelines that exist in the 5th dimension.

His explanation is obviously crafted to fit the show, especially with the talk of “tears” and “gates,” but it matches up.)

So. The Upsidedown could be an alternate universe, a variation on our own. Aka another timeline.

If it is another timeline, then that means El and Henry’ve been folding the 6th dimension when they create their doorways.

(Theoretically they—or another character like Will—could learn to fold the 4th and 5th dimensions, to teleport and time travel, but that’s a different conversation).

If the Upsidedown is this other universe, other timeline, why is it how it is? And how did it transform from the “realm” Henry was banished to, into a warped mirror of hawkins?

Well, what if the realm Henry was banished to wasn’t the upsidedown at all?

From here on out, we’ll be calling the realm El sent Henry to after the Hawkins Lab Massacre “Henry’s Realm,” because Henry refers to it as a realm in his monologue to El & it simplifies things.

So, in the very first video I linked, the narrator says that by traveling back in time—ie folding the 5th dimension to travel through the 4th—a person can create a new branch/timeline.

Well, if something as simple as bending the 5th dimension can result in a new timeline, what about someone making a gate through the 6th dimension?

Essentially, my theory is that the upsidedown is an alternate timeline of Hawkins—one that potentially deviated from the timeline our heroes are in (the Rightsideup) on November 6th, 1983.

Here’s how I think it could have happened:

El makes contact with the demogorgon, and, as a result, Henry

A gate starts to open between the Rightsideup and Henry’s Realm because of this mind-contact

The process of opening a gate via bending the 6th dimension creates a deviation in the rightsideup’s timeline (if you watched the video with Mr. Clarke, imagine his paper plate being folded in half, and then one half of the paper plate being folded again—now, when the pencil tears a gate through the plate, there are three holes)

There now exists a gate between Henry’s Realm and this deviated timeline, as well as the deviated timeline and the Rightsideup

Due to the direct connection to Henry’s Realm (unlike the rightsideup) this deviated timeline experiences an immediate influx of toxic chemicals & vine growth that rapidly shape the terrain (killing all human life & most other organic life, as well, but leaving things such as Nancy’s journal behind). This results in the rapid creation of the upsidedown

Henry sends a single demogorgon through to explore the newly-created upsidedown (aka the deviated timeline), and has said demogorgon continue on to the rightsideup, to our El, our timeline, and the lab

By the time Will arrives in the upsidedown, the initial chemical reactions that took place and resulted in the destruction/creation of the upsidedown have already occurred. There are other toxic chemicals remaining, but nothing lethal enough to instantly turn Will to ash

El, when she banished the demogorgon at the end of the season, banishes it to Henry’s Realm. This is why it’s not in the upsidedown when she wakes up in the upsidedown.

Okay, that was a lot, and i know it. I also don’t know how clear i was (sorry about that). There are a few reasons I think this makes sense, though.

For one, there’s only the one demogorgon in season one. We don’t see any demodogs, etc., or any evidence of the mindflayer. If the upsidedown was newly created, it makes sense that moving from Henry’s Realm to the Upsidedown would be a process done over time, which is why the shifting colors of the upsidedown (more reds in season 4) & the sudden appearances of demobats make sense, as more and more of Henry’s Realm’s creatures shift dimensions.

We saw the way the clouds in season four rotted organic material, and the way Jason practically dissolved.

Both times, the dissolving happened very rapidly.

Then again, the upsidedown could be an alternate timeline without being an alternate timeline directly created by the opening of the gate on November 6th. Maybe it’s a mystery, how it became what it is now—all they know is that something happened in that timeline’s November 6th, and that until that point, the timeline was similar enough to our own for Nancy’s journal entries to be exactly the same.

Either way, i love the idea of the upsidedown being the sight of… well, not a natural disaster, exactly, but you get the idea. Like, hey, that journal belonged to a version of Nancy who’s dead now, along with alternate timeline versions of everyone we know and love plus the entire rest of the world, and it’s very likely we could see a similar destruction of our timeline if we don’t stop Venca/prevent more of these toxins from entering via the gates.

Not to mention the idea that, hey, Venca was banished to an alternate timeline, will we have to deal with alternate timeline versions of him? Does everything we do every trigger an alternate timeline? Is an alternate timeline created every time El opens a gate?

Basically, playing more with time and space and reality.

Idk if i explained this clearly enough, but i’m having a lot of fun with this concept! If anyone has any similar/alternate thoughts, or reasons they think this couldn’t work, please share!! I love talking ab this stuff lol.

Misty Meadows: Hi, I’m Misty Meadows and I am the owner of this Tumblr for my Gravity Falls fanfiction. (Is that a good introduction? Lol)

(clapperboard sound*) Anyways, I’ve been a Gravity Falls fan since I first saw the show come out as a kid. At the time, I was a huge nerd for Cryptozoology which a lot of people found super weird.

Yet, this show helped me accept my weirdness and made it normal. But, when it came to an end, I was heartbroken.

So of course, like everyone else in the fandom, I cried, ate ice cream and rewatched it, then finally, accepted its ended.

Yet, throughout that time, I decided to read fanfics from other writers. Some were pretty good but, some were very….weird ( cough Pinecest gross! Cough) That’s when I thought, maybe I should give it a try. I had a lot of success with some to my friends but, some failures too. I explored other fandoms and wrote for those. Then I took a break from writing all together which devastated me greatly.

I then rewatched Gravity Falls again, laughed, cried and realized what should have been my inspiration instead. Alex Hirsh created this show about family, growing up, adventure, mystery and change so, I wanted to continue that message and decided this was what I needed. But I couldn’t do it alone of course. I needed the character’s helps as well as research. (No not the voice actors nor Hirsch himself. The fictional characters. (No, I am not crazy this is just for fun!))

Mabel Pines: Misty then said how the show should come back through fanfiction which I was all about especially with some of the things my character was going to do!

Dipper Pines: Although at first, I wasn’t sure how this would work,

Stanley Pines: Seemed very unlikely.

Ford Pines: Impossible even!

Stanley Pines: I was about to leave like that but then she sat me down, fed me bacon and then...

Dipper Pines: Then she showed us the script and we all came together and liked it.

Mabel Pines: Of course, we had some editing to do.

Ford Pines After all this is the history of Gravity Falls and the history of the Pines family we are talking about.

Mabel Pines: At first it was a little hard with all the.. creative differences

Misty: I know what you are saying but no, we are not bringing footbot into this!

Stanley Pines: Oh, come on, the kids love footbot!

Ford Pines: “For the power of Science?” are we really going with that as my catchphrase here?

Stanley Pines: So, after a long night of editing and workshopping

Dipper Pines: It’s got old mysteries as well as new ones!

(scene) “What the heck is going on?!” Dipper shouts as he sees the gnomes battle the fairies.

( Another Scene) “Look out!” Mabel shouts as they drive the go cart from a terrifying creature!

“Man, this is some serious Dejvu!” Dipper states.

Ford Pines: Action and adventure!

(Scene) “Quick catch it! Before it gets away!” Ford says pointing to the strange bat like creature on the roof. Suddenly, the creature fell onto Soos’ face.

“Ahhhhh kill it! Kill it!!!!!” Soos shouts. The Pines twins then both took out their brooms and began beating Soos with it.

(Another scene) “According to the readings,” Dipper said looking at the scanner while the rest of the Pines family was behind him. “The ghost should be right...” he soon saw the refrigerator shaking and leaking ectoplasm all over the floor.

“One two three not it!” Mabel quickly said while the rest said not it.

“Not... ah man!” Dipper says.

Stanely Pines: Some new crimes!

(Scene) “Wait you did what!” Ford Yells over the phone with Stan on the other line

“I just so happened to punch a clown at a kid’s birthday party, I didn’t know it was a crime!?”

(Another scene)

“Freeze!” Sheriff Blubs yells.

“Oh no! it’s the po po! Lets go!” Wendy yells and drags Mabel with her to run.

Mabel Pines: And of course, some ROMANCE!

rewatching what happened to end the game (which I didnt comment on here originally cause I was on a call) but I do think that the rangers stealing second fucked them. When it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

Ahhhhh, with a lot of complaints & whining?? 🤪

No but to be more srs (and also hi! And ty! ❤️❤️❤️), i'm not sure i can say a huge amount on complex narratives (my preferences tend to run shorter and less plotty, even if ive somehow ended up with a 140k draft bleugh) but here's some stuff ive gleaned, maybe some of this is more aspirational tho lol

so for outlines, i think the key point is to sUmMaRiSe -- and i don't think it really matters HOW you do it, there's lots of different methods, whatever works for you. i think the first summary i did for Shattering mightve been entirely in emojis for a tumblr ask game? which was fun and sparked pretty much everything when i came back to it, ymmv tho lol. i tend to be a list of scenes on paper guy, with a summary of what's happening in each. i'd now say, instead of half spacing that, maybe leave some gaps so you can easily insert scenes if you want, ha. depending on the story, ive also more ~mindmapped the progress instead of scene listing, so for example if it relies a lot on contrasting parallels, a bunch of arrows covering progress or whatever iconography works might be helpful. i'd also now say, figure out your shorthand early ha: ive dutifully written out notes, then looked over them and been like uh youve used 'R' here to refer to rio rhea AND ruby you realise.... or 'park scene' to refer to 3 different scenes...whoops! i personally tend to write and plot and whatnot in chronological order, so keeping track of outlines isn't nec too difficult (unless you decide to go adding a bunch of stuff in bleugh) for characters, well you tend to get those for free in fanfiction woop. at least for the major characters, you then probs don't need to keep too much track of them/create character sheets or whatever? for more minor canon characters, if they're a pov or just majorish character in my fic, ive tended to rewatch and make notes, to try and figure out how to tie their disparate bits of (often pragmatic-to-the-plot) characterisation together, and make them feel realistic. with original characters in fic, i think it depends how big a part they play. i think in a first draft more is more if you want -- get a load of details down abt these randos if you want, and you can always scrape it off the page later if it doesn't fit, if that's your way of figuring them out. or you can do it more intentionally as a separate exercise e.g., write your original character a monologue where they explain themself. but i think the most important thing re any characters is to Make Decisions abt them, even if that stuff is never directly on the page, it will make them feel consistent (espec if they're not a/the pov char) -- WHY are they doing whatever they're doing, WHAT are they like, DO they know xyz or not (or when do they find out) etc etc etc, otherwise characters can just feel like they're wandering in and out as if in a dream to do random shit, and thus like props.

Development... well i guess this is taking the summarised outline(s) and untangling them into real story? idk how to describe a lot of this process tbh cos so much of this is mental, but scribbling on a few pages with lots of arrows is likely to help i feel! and a lot of scribblings in the margins for ever and ever! then maybe some [bracketed commands] in an eventual typed draft, and some paper notes to take back to it.

re timelines, again if you write/plan in chronological order, this might be easier. and i think it's very contextual, if you're writing something with a v tight timeline of say a couple of days, it might be very important to make sure everything fits and it's clear when stuff is happening, whereas with something longer maybe you can be loser. this isn't something i'd nec make a huge amount of notes abt otherwise, but i do think it's important to consider -- it's probs something i'd find more in the first draft and expand in the edits. for example, Shattering starts in summer so there's a lot abt it being warm and sunny, and eventually the weather gets colder/trees get starker blah blah blah. i def think this is a good thing to pay attention to in the edit, is it clear that things are happening on different days, or are days seeming to go on for a billion hours etc. it's funny when you go back and watch tv shows or films sometimes and that stuff doesn't quite seem to make sense! of course this can be done well, to imply something off with the pov character/their sense of time disintegrating but i think it has to be done with intent.

all of that said, i don't think there's a 'right' or 'best' way to keep track of such stuff, whatever works! and that all sounds rather plan-y, which i tend to prefer espec for longer/complexer stuff, but that doesn't mean p(l)antsing approaches won't work, if you're willing stuff can alllllways be sorted in the edit.

Oh in that line's defence that is not the first time the show has set up a plot point and gone literally nowhere with it.

I just finished rewatching Reign Storm not that long ago, and Vlad implies, if not outright states, that the Fright Knight joined him. We never hear anything about this again going forward. Vlad literally has the Crown of Fire (and I imagine the Ring of Rage 'cause there's no way he didn't take that when Danny passed out) at the end. We never hear anything about that again either.

Danny Phantom is genuinely so riddled with plot holes it could be a road in Quebec 🙃

I watched the new Night at the Museum and it really was... just ok. There were a lot of good things about it. The character designs and animation were nice to look at. The humor kinda sucked but yeah it’s definitely targeting a younger audience and I’m sure if I rewatched the older films they’d be just as bad. There were several eye roll things in there including some jokes that were a little.... eh... espec. the one where Sacagawea says she respects all living creatures but not the thing she’s fighting and it’s just a stupid joke but it’s a misunderstanding of the culture of an already marginalized community but yeah. The plot is a rehash of older movies but Seth is kinda cool even if they resort to annoying humor with him and I like that Nick is a pretty well rounded character. He gives me Miles Morales a little I guess, I think his interest in music is nice. I also liked Joan of arc, she was cool even if they didn’t explain her at all (maybe just a line saying that she’s a newer exhibit would’ve helped bc I kept wondering if I missed her introduction to the story).

I am so sorry c!pumpkinduo enjoyers but I have to get something off of my chest a lil.

Please I beg of you stop interpreting c!pumpkinduo (in manburg OR in Las Nevadas lore) as a healthy, loving dynamic. It’s like the biggest misinterpretation of a character dynamic I have seen in my whole life which has got to be an achievement. There were obviously silly and funny scenes between them, ones that made their relationship look like a good one and thats exactly the point. Toxic relationships are not a constant and unwavering hurt.

First reason, watch any Quackity manburg vod ever and pay attention to the semi-lore bits it is literally so obvious that for one, Schlatt did not love him back. Two, He did not respect Q, and three, anytime that was brought up it turned into threats. Anyone remember that one time Q stated c!Schlatt did not respect him and he just threatened to lobotomize Q so that he couldn’t think like that for himself? Because I sure do. It directly lead to c!Q canonically having a plan to impeach/execute him.

It was never carried through, honestly, but it’s the thought that counts. Suppose the good moments and bits of attention he got out of basically begging not to be made fun of for like two minutes worked out. Admittedly a lot of the making fun of was just them being silly, Schlatt telling him to go to the gym, calling him flatty patty and Q crying that one time but tears are tears ☠️

You guys forget the way that the two characters ended up. CQ brought up SERIOUSLY that he was tired of being disrespected and cast aside as an equal member of Manburg, and of being constantly mistreated, and Schlatt literally started to fight him. Like. Their marriage ended in a physical battle in which Q pulled out a crossbow to get him away and Schlatt taunted him for being a coward. Their marriage ended in cQuackity shooting him to death, and directly after he went to Pogtopia with hopes of actively working against him.

Though the biggest application to cPumpkinduo being blatantly toxic is the first Las Nevadas lore stream. The entire first section of it actually, which I was rewatching and gathering quotes from.

CQuackity explicitly stated several times that just the thought of being around cSchlatt makes him uncomfortable, and that he gets flashbacks/terrible memories when he’s with him. I genuinely do not know where people got the implications through any of his lore that this was a happy and loving relationship but it sure as hell wasn’t here. Cant be just me who hates ppl trying to take a canon abusive relationship and portray it as loving. Its like taking cdiscduo and being like omg best friends!! (But to what feels like a lesser extent)

Of course it wasn’t abuse to the extent that it was with cdiscduo or very typical violence you see in media, but it was still mentally abusive, and eventually they still got physical. (I could also talk ab how freaky it is for ppl to depict their relationship as s3xua11y abusive but thats for another time. Its annoyingly common.)

Another thing I notice people tend to do is, for some reason, say that c!sweaterduo is a better enemies to lovers dynamic or even ship Revived cSchlatt/Wilbur/Q, which if you think about for more than three fucking seconds youll see how weird that is. CSweaterduo legit just fucking despise each other not in the homoerotic, enemies yo lovers way, they just genuinely want each other to die. I promise making them get together at some point whether it be the elections or after revival is not the move you think it is. CPumpkinduo was a canonically abusive relationship, and adding cWilbur to the mix? Yeah, no. No thanks.

I can see cTntduo, but the complete mischaracterization of cSchlatt as a whole is just… Weird! Sorry, it’s weird. Making an abusive character loving and filled with guilt over his actions when that has never been canonically displayed (quite the opposite in fact) just to ship your favs is strange. Especially on the coumpkinduo end where cQ openly expressed that cSchlatt made him uncomfortable and upset just to think about because of the impression he left.
