April 7, 1930: Birthday of Comrade Vilma Espín, Cuban revolutionary, anti-imperialist guerrilla fighter, founder of the Federation of Cuban Women - Federación de Mujeres Cubanas. She made a crucial contribution as an early champion of queer rights in socialist Cuba.

Last year I learned from her daughter, Mariela Castro Espín, that Vilma initiated what would eventually become Cenesex under the auspices of the women’s federation. She was responsible for importing and publishing scientific and political materials from the German Democratic Republic on LGBTQ rights, contributing to Cuba becoming a leading example of queer and trans rights today.

Vilma also rescued the records of the Women's International Democratic Federation - Federación Democrática Internacional de Mujeres during the counterrevolution in Eastern Europe in 1990, and made sure Cuba undertook keeping the global women’s organization alive. Today Women In Struggle - Mujeres En Lucha is a proud member of the WIDF.

Socialist Cuba continues to lead the world on trans and queer rights, while the U.S., Britain, and other capitalist powers claw back our meager gains.

On July 18, the National Assembly of People's Power approved the Code for Children, Adolescents and Youth, a wide-ranging document guaranteeing the rights of young people. From the report in Granma:

Mariela Castro Espín, director of the National Center for Sexual Education, pointed out that sexual characteristics are also included among the protected categories, along with sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation, "which reflects a commitment to the protection of historically vulnerable groups."

Furthermore, it responds to the need for public policies to combat stereotypes and promote the full development of minors.

"An unprecedented advance is the prohibition of non-consensual genital alteration in intersex children, except in cases of risk to health or life.

"This groundbreaking clause in the Cuban legal system rejects unnecessary medical enhancements intended to force a binary adaptation of genitals, aligning it with international human rights standards."
