Prompt: Danny’s birth was an accident.
A lab accident, to be precise.
The problem with researching something as esoteric as ghosts was that you had to source all your own materials. If you wanted to know how high ectoplasm concentrations affected human cells, you either had to buy from ethically dubious medical supply companies or use your own.
Maddie used her own. Or Jack's. They worked together, and he was fine with it, so it was essentially the same thing, ethically, if not biologically.
Either way, they kept a whole variety of tissue samples, sourced from themselves. Cheek swabs, bone marrow samples, skin, hair, a tooth Jack had to get pulled, blood, serum and whole, a couple biopsies from different organs, spinal fluid, sperm, a collection of egg cells.
If they were going to market their inventions as family friendly and safe, they needed to know it wasn't going to render anyone sterile. They had Jazz already, and one child was quite enough, but other people might want more. Or assurances it wasn't going to mutate their children, before or after birth. Although in Maddie's opinion, that was quite ridiculous. Ectoradiation was quite different from electromagnetic radiation, or alpha radiation, or other traditional types.
So, that was what Maddie was researching now. Eggs and sperm. She wasn't about to do anything fertilized, of course. Too many ethical problems. But she would put a different concentration of ectoplasm in each test tube for one set, then duplicate those concentrations for the second set, then set up some eggs in one set of vessels, and a sample of sperm in the other, then run them for the same amount of time. Fourteen with eggs, fourteen with sperm. A bit of an odd number, but that's what happened in independent labs. Test tubes broke, and then if you wanted to control your experiments, and keep everything the same, you had to do things in odd numbers. Or buy new test tubes. But the more time you spent shopping, the less time you spent experimenting.
She started with the eggs. One by one, putting them into the the test tubes. One... two... three... four... bottom of the column... five... six... seven... eight... bottom of the column... nine... ten... eleven... twel--
"Maddie! I'm taking Jazz out to see you know who for you know what!"
"Dad!" said Jazz, her two-year-old voice squeaky with outrage. "I know we're going to the doctor!"
"Oh, right!" she called back. "That was today, thanks you for remembering, hun!" Usually, she was the one of them to remember important dates, but Jack was really on top of things for Jazz. It was nice.
"No problem, Mads! Good luck with the mutation experiment!"
"Thanks!" She turned back to the rack of test tubes. Now, where was she? She'd just finished that row... She had sorted them by row, hadn't she? Of course she had. So, she should start with the sperm. Right
She picked up the pipette and started from the top of the column. One.. two... three... four... She kept going, until she hit fourteen, and still had two test tubes left.
Well. That wasn't good. She must have-- Had she overlapped? Or had she just not finished filling the egg test tubes? If the latter, she could just put the last two eggs in the last two test tubes. And label them a little more carefully. She rearranged her worktable and peered into the container she'd carried the thawed eggs over in.
One. One unopened egg.
Hands shaking slightly, Maddie counted back to the thirteenth test tube. The one with the second-highest concentration of ectoplasm. The one that she had almost certainly put both an egg cell and sperm into. She pulled it out of the rack and set it in an empty one, then sat and stared.
This was a serious mistake.
Oh, she knew she could just dump it out in the sink or in the biological waste box, or any number of other things. Even moving at their fastest, sperm took a while to get into an egg. It might not have gotten there yet. And even if it had... Few people would consider a single cell a human being. But... Maddie had been raised Irish Catholic. She couldn't...
She sighed. Before she got carried away, she needed to check to see if it had even... taken, she supposed she should call it. If there was any life there. The ectoplasm could very well have acted as an inhibitor.
She licked her lips and reached for a microscope. First, find out what had happened, then talk to Jack, and then... then they would decide what to do. Together.

Thoughts on the ordering mechanism; in light of Virgo The split from good to bad, awesome to lame, interesting to boring, is the test all the time... under Liberalism, which itself is just a name for pure judgement, Saturn/Osiris in the garden, deciding. To wit: as soon as there is memory, there is association, and thus, wisdom standard. Saturn/Shiva is, after all, just Time itself (Chronos) and thus where memory and experience, the beginning of the scale, happens. The G-d experiencing themself is the all consuming, all self-aware except for noticing gloriously the "delusion" or more directly, "delugion" as in G-d's consciousness noticing creation into being constantly, Shroedinger's infinite noticer, of only that which is, deciding. This is the consumer under this-stage capitalism and every other, no? Liberalism itself, Right or Left but neutral into the violent, direct center, defending reason and pragmatic operations, keeping the markets open and the products moving by any means uncircumvented. The self that notices, prefers, and thus, defines itself in terms of its pursuits. This is the Osiris that we all are, judging the dead, the products themselves, packaged for our timely, unhurried consumption, but summoned from beyond and chosen like the first and last of agriculture alike. This is fine lol. If it's not, we will complain, however feels most effectively. Can we speak to a manager? If not we will just leave. This is the ordering mechanism that helps define Virgo, and in Jewish Kabbalah, it's a time for self-assesment and, like many other times, especially "nowadays" for working things out with people as immediately as possible, by taking responsibility as effectively as possible. Notably in the Bible and in any of the functionally martial moments in canon ever after, this has taken a pragmatic, violent pivot, so much so that the rest of the social expectation and responsibility narrative tends to express itself in those terms-- but deliteralized into the range of pragmatic oral violences endemic of the later prophets and preachers, still in the hopes of aspiring to take responsibility for something maybe a little out of anyones hands. Just in the hopes of drawing good conclusions, so as to live well rather than not. The ordering mechanism in Virgo is so about noticing and remembering the difference between the wonderful and the ugh. Hassidic master Tzvi Elimelch of Dinov connects it to the relationship between Gimmel and Daled, beneficence and poverty. Whereas Wisdom and it's inevitable corruption (in time, through space) into it's opposite, Ignorance, is sometimes associated with the first two letters in the Aleph-Bet, and the Bet of Bereishit (Genesis) is the collapse into Ignorance that made the world possible, within the bubble of ignorance that congealed in loving contrast to the Divine and complete original Wisdom so that there could be extremes to the world and possibility itself. This is the first X Y axis, before the physical directions congealed and took off into the Six directions of space, first there was before and after, then there was better and worse. Here associated with Wealth, Beneficence, all the good that the camel brings ברוך הגמלני כל טוב is that third letter, the Daled that follows it is poverty, created by its opposite, mostly in memory and association. Remember when we used to have so much that we don't have now? Sorry. This ordering mechanism is associated with G-d creating the world, deeply, differently than the New Year of Aries, Passover time. Virgo as the divine Maiden is specifically not the Mother, but the esoteric truth that the "mother and the maiden are one," arguably the main revelation of Eleusis as far as Demeter and Persephone being One in Aphrodite Urania. That's all in the absence of creation, and this is argued for why the letter YOD " י " is the letter associated with Virgo and Elul in the Sefer Yetzirah. The Yod is the tenth letter
but somehow also the beginning of all letters, a little dot/slash, the atomic element in all letters to follow. Yet somehow only expressed into the beginning of all that is ever the Sixth month of the Twelve, the judgment-assesment-take care of it part of the year and of the self, the Yod that introduces and resolves so that we can notice and do, finally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcM4nYKtV58 This video beautifully picks apart the moment where one of our collective favorite directors (because Batman was so universal of course, like the space between Halloween and Christmas) is analyized for when and why he stopped being good or fun, and the parrallel with the process of individuation into obnoxiousness in the cartoon cinema industry is too beautiful, deep, and sad not to share. The process will see all our limitations, and the sooner we see it ourselves, the more responsibility we will be able to take for what's possible next and now. Enjoy the agency, feel welcome to get on it, be sorry, notice what we're still proud of and/or mad about, and see what we can do to take responsibility for all the next steps, before the rains come and it's too wet and cold to do anything lol

Unlike the 'they don't read the playtest feedback' bit, the rumors/leaks here all track and I expect to be basically accurate. Thoughts below cut.
.....
Setting aside for a moment the issue of the OGL and the 3rd Party Publishing community and even the brewing legal battle between Hasbro/WotC and existing VTTs, and just looking at what all of this likely means for the upcoming new edition of D&D as a ttrpg and nothing else, things still kind of look bad.
Weekly digital releases as the primary vector for new game content, with phsyical books as collectors items, ensures that content glut will crush 6e as surely as it did 4e, while those who want to stick to physical rulebooks will have to pay out the nose for them - and if you miss the initial release you may not be able to pick up a supplement at all.
Negative impact on the game even for physical world player groups won't be limited to weekly content glut either, as the VTT focus will ensure that no 1st party rules or mechanics will be published for 6e that can't be fully implemented in the video game space, while WotC's moves to alienate the 3pp community will mean you won't have much in alternative content options for 6e to make up the difference. So you can say goodbye to esoteric, interesting rules and imaginative abilities that let you do things in D&D that just wouldn't be possible in a video game.
If you forget the tabletop roots and judge 6e as a live service online multiplayer game, then things look even worse. The WotC VTT will be unavoidably lacking compared to already established alternatives like Destiny or Genshin or Fortnight or League or WoW or Final Fantasy 14 or Guild Wars 2 - full featured video games - many of them free to play - capable of such modern marvels as real time combat, play sessions demanding less than four hours of your time, and underlying game math more complicated than a middle schooler can do in their head.
Basically, because they're making 'D&D the tabletop game the video game' instead of just a separate D&D video game, it still has to be at least theoretically playable /as/ a pen & paper tabletop game with no computers involved. As such, 6e will have all the constraints of both a video game and a tabletop game, leaving it unable to employ the unique potential of either medium. Even if they weren't also saddling it with weekly content glut, even if they hadn't made the entire player community angry going in, even if they weren't trying to carve out space in an already overcrowded 'live service' market - one where dozens of more promising and better funded offerings from more established publishers get mercilessly culled every year, even if 3rd party publishers and VTTs simply gave up the fight and quietly disappeared into that good night... even if 6e were facing none of the many other fatal roadblocks in its path, this alone would doom the entire 6e project to mediocrity and ultimately failure.
Maybe Hasbro could have turned the D&D brand into a major cash cow, but not by directly monetizing the tabletop game itself as though it were a mobile game. Rather, they needed to treat the ttrpg the way Disney treats Marvel comics or the way Nintendo and the Pokemon Corporation treat the actual main line pokemon video games - as IP farms to generate and test content that then gets spun out into a wider media and merchandising empire. Sadly they've already done enough damage to the brand that I'm not sure they could pull this off now if they wanted to.
6e, despite what I felt was a promising start in the first couple play test documents, pretty much cannot succeed at this point - not the way WotC's execs want it to, but not even as a just a stand alone game in spite of those execs, no matter how skilled and well intentioned the ground level developers are. The way I see it, we're headed towards an even more spectacular failure than 4e. Hopefully it will be quickly followed by a 7e walk back as dramatic as what we saw in 5e, and we can all start joking about odd numbered D&D editions being good and even numbered editions being trash fires.

Thailand Clinical Laboratory Industry Has Evolved Over the Years and Has Become a Critical Solution Provider: Ken Research
Buy Now
Expanding healthcare spending by the Government, increasing healthcare spending by aging population and increasing public awareness led to the growth of the Clinical Laboratory Market in Thailand.
Thailand Clinical Laboratory Market Overview: The Clinical Laboratory Market in Thailand is currently at the growth stage and is a consolidated market. The market has been driven by growth in non-communicable disease and chronic diseases, increasing focus on preventive medicine, ageing population, increase in awareness levels, rising disposable income and preference for evidence based treatment. The Thailand Clinical Laboratory Market grew from 6.7% in 2017 to 12.3% in 2021 in terms of revenue generated, due to the growing demand for clinical laboratory services in the country.
Challenges Faced by Thailand Clinical Laboratory Market: In spite of the growing demand for diagnostic services, affordability remains a concern. Budget constraints from both public and private payers are pushing costs lower. The number of sample sales and test price are very competitive among both organized and unorganized businesses. Diagnostics facilities need to modify their technology frequently to maintain a competitive edge. However, these improvements not only require large construction expenditures but also raise maintenance expenses. This is essential, especially for smaller players with little resources. Lack of laboratory accountability for the services that they render, insufficient oversight of suppliers, consumables, supplies, and laboratory equipment in terms of price, commitments, and warranty support; are still very challenging issues.
Supportive Government Initiatives: Thailand’s reform places a heavy emphasis on improving a district health system that is pro-rural and pro-poor. To promote lab accreditation and restore consumer trust, the government has established national accreditation bodies such as the Thailand Laboratory Accreditation Program. The national accreditation program was established as a local alternative to make it affordable, feasible, scalable, sustainable, and effective. In 2008, Thailand’s Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS) was extended to include wider coverage. The UCS plan focuses on minorities and the poor and near-poor, with the aim of offering the most comprehensive coverage possible. It includes extensive outpatient and inpatient health care, as well as prevention and health promotion, in addition to basic hospital fees.

What Are The Opportunities Presented by Quantum Computing? - Technology Org
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quantum computers have always been touted as “magical” devices in science-fiction movies – however, their impact may soon become a reality.
ISI’s Itay Hen, Research Team Leader at the Hen Lab, is leading a multi-institutional effort funded by the US Department of Defense (specifically DARPA) to figure out how to test the capabilities of quantum computers.
Together with fellow ISI researcher Amir Kalev, USC Dornsife professor Rosa Di Felice and others, Hen is investigating the opportunities presented by quantum technologies.
“Quantum computers promise many more things than standard computers,” explained Hen. “DARPA wanted to know whether to invest in building large-scale quantum computers, and what society could gain from them.”
The research team doesn’t just identify problems that quantum computers could help with, but they also quantify clear benchmarks for testing and determine the required resources.
“We need to ensure we stay on track and develop our efforts where quantum is useful,” Kalev added.
Merging science with application
Hen gathered multi-disciplinary teams to ensure their contributions were impactful. Subject matter experts devised applicable questions, while quantum computing scientists distilled their computational aspects.
Di Felice is one of these subject matter experts. She noted, “I identify theories and resources needed to solve the problems we’re interested in, and explain why it’s more suitable for quantum as opposed to classical computing methods.”
At times, communication was a challenge.
“At first, it felt like we were speaking different languages. We quantum information scientists had to explain our thoughts in more grounded language, and not describe things in terms of abstract, algorithmic values,” Hen recalled.
Questions for quantum
“Quantum computers could help discover new materials with esoteric properties,” said Hen. “They can also solve complicated differential equations, predicting how complex systems, such as the stock market, operate and behave.”
One of their proposed questions is whether quantum computers could help find new superconductors.
A superconductor is a high-efficiency material that runs electrical currents without resistance. Normal electrical currents generate a lot of heat and wasted energy, while superconductors can run currents without generating heat.
As superconductors usually work at low temperatures, the researchers wondered if quantum computers can find some that work at room temperatures, which could become a core component of technological advances.
“For example, it’s impossible to run a train on superconducting material because things would have to be very cold,” remarked Kalev. “With room-temperature superconductors, this would be feasible.”
Solving the yet unsolvable
So far, the research teams have discovered intriguing techniques to devise problems that no existing computer can solve. If quantum computers prove to be effective at solving these problems, they might transform society for the better.
“We needed to formulate questions that we know the answer to, but are impossible for standard computers to solve,” said Hen.
Hen and the others are also planning for a future where quantum’s impact continues to grow and spread.
Di Felice noted, “Our research motivates other scientists to work harder to create quantum chips. Quantum computing could tap into more industries like health and energy production.”
