📍Celebrating the end of a bookstore and the beginning of another ✨ . Eslite bookstore is a well-known bookshop in Taiwan. The Dunnan store was the first branch in Taipei and this year marked its 30th anniversary. As the world’s first 24-hour bookstore, this shop has created tons of beautiful memories for both the foreign visitors and locals alike throughout the years. . In celebration of the anniversary, French artist @emmanuellemoureaux brought her famous installation, “Forest of Numbers,” to the bookstore, with a total of 8,000 pieces of paper displaying the spectrum of vibrant colors. What’s more, she also included a Chinese character “品” (from the Chinese name of Eslite, 誠品) in her artwork for the first time. (As shown in the last picture above. 📸: @yifanpeng0927 ) . Even though we’re all counting down to this bookstore’s official closure day on May 31st, 2020, it’s said that a new 24-hour bookstore will be introduced but the location has yet to be decided. Until then, if anyone’s planning on taking a trip here, I highly recommend paying a visit to this unique bookstore. A dear friend of mine once wrote that a café can become a sacred place for a person...over time, memories and friendships are made, and the place becomes a space to remember what God has done and continues to do in and through one’s life.  . . . Though I have yet to find my one sacred space, there’s definitely something calming and restorative about bookstores that seems to create the same kind of sanctuary/safe haven for me. No matter what part of the world I’m in, the sight of neatly-stacked books and the sound of pages turning makes me feel at home; in a single moment, I’m in a place I can call my own, at least as long as I stay within these peaceful walls. . . Perhaps finding sanctuary in a certain place has to do with ambience: for example, the gentle music that can hardly be heard over the soft whispers of customers, the elegant shelves and stacks of books as far as the eye can see. Or maybe it’s more to do with familiarity: the particular collection of historical, educational, and anecdotal texts will sometimes differ, but still there is the same intention of sharing, enlightening, and storytelling. Or maybe still, it has to do with spirituality: the sense that God is not in *where* I am, but in *who* I am no matter what kind of place, people, or things I am surrounded by. . . I don’t know if I’ll ever truly find a permanent home or sanctuary that I’ll always be able to come back to with a sense of belonging. But maybe I’m not supposed to. Maybe (just maybe), what I call “home” is connected to the life and the lives God blesses me with, rather than the location itself.
