"As a mother of an autistic child, I can relate to parents who have children with disabilities every day in the pharmacy. I believe this helps me develop deeper and more understanding relationships with families. By employing people who relate to our patients, I believe we can build trusting relationships with those we treat."

Design on the Front Lines Discussion Series
Imagine a space where doctors and designers alike can come together and solve some of the toughest challenges in healthcare in one of the most evocative spaces in Philadelphia. The Jefferson Health Design Lab exists to bring people from different backgrounds together and promote inclusive design in healthcare. From patients to providers, everyone has the potential to accelerate change and improve lives. Fueled by traditional and modern prototyping technology and a foundation of Health Design Thinking, the Health Design Lab is more than just a maker space, but a space that will change the way we all think about the future of healthcare.
HEALTH DESIGN THINKING: CREATING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES FOR BETTER HEALTH
By Bon Ku, MD, and Ellen Lupton
As health care systems around the globe struggle to expand access, improve outcomes, and control costs, Health Design Thinking offers a new approach for designing dynamic, responsive health care products and services. Health Design Thinking is authored by Bon Ku, physician and founder of the innovative Health Design Lab at Thomas Jefferson University, and Ellen Lupton, award-winning designer, author, and curator at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, with contributions from experts in design and medicine. This practice-based guide applies design thinking to real-world health care challenges. Design thinking uses play and experiment rather than rigid rules. It draws on interviews, observations, diagrams, storytelling, physical models, and role playing; design teams focus not on technology but on problems faced by patients and clinicians. Illustrated with 230 drawings, photographs, storyboards, data graphics, architectural plans, and other visualizations, Health Design Thinking provides a hands-on manual for reframing medical education, treatment, and industry to align with everyday challenges in communities around the world.

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Sam at Taking on a World of Words. It’s open for anyone to join in and is a great way to share what you’ve been reading! All you have to do is answer three questions and share a link to your blog in the comments section of Sam’s blog.
The three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
A similar meme is run by Lipsyy Lost and Found where bloggers share This Week in Books #TWiB.
  What I’m reading now:
Love, Secret Santa by S. Domingo
I started reading this last night and it’s such a lovely YA Christmas read, I’m very much enjoying this one.
When Stars Will Shine by Emma Mitchell
I’m thoroughly enjoying dipping in and out of this short story collection, it’s such a good read. As this is a book that is raising money for charity I took part in a cover reveal for it a few weeks ago and since then there’s been an issue with pre-orders but that is now all up and running. So if you’d like to know more about the book and to pre-order it please click here.
Pushing Her Luck by B. R. Maycock
I’ve only just started this one but I’m already hooked and I can’t wait to read more of it  over the next couple of days!
A Wedding in December by Sarah Morgan
This is my current audio book which I got from the library. It’s an enjoyable listen so far and I’m looking forward to getting back to it.
I’ll Have What She’s Having by Erin Carlson
I bought this at the weekend and am really enjoying it. It’s a non-fiction book about Nora Ephron’s three rom-coms and it’s such a fun read. I now want to watch When Harry Met Sally for the umpteenth time! 🙂
Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton
I haven’t read much more of this book since last week I as I got caught up with Christmas reading but I will be getting back to this one very soon.
  What I recently finished reading:
Body Tourists by Jane Rogers
This was such a good read, something completely different for me but I’m so glad I picked it up. I’ll be reviewing this once I’ve got my thoughts in order.
The Secret Santa by Trish Harnetiaux
This was a fun read about a group gathering and secrets being uncovered. It was a quick, enjoyable book.
Home Truths by Tina Seskis
I really enjoyed this thriller, I read it all in one sitting as I was desperate to know what was going on. I reviewed this yesterday so you can read my full thoughts here if you’d like to know more.
Bowie’s Bookshelf by John O’Connell
I really enjoyed dipping in and out of this book during Non-Fiction November. I wrote a mini review of this on Monday as part of my wrap-up post so you can read that here if you’d like to.
All the Water in the World by Karen Raney
This book was different than I was expecting but it was a good read and I’m glad I read it. I hope to get a review up of this one very soon.
Dopesick by Beth Macy
This book was such an interesting and moving read and I’m so glad I read it. I knew a reasonable amount about the opioid crisis but this book was still eye-opening to me. I wrote a mini review on Monday which you can find here.
Snowglobe by Amy Wilson
This is a lovely, moving middle grade read and I really enjoyed it.
Christmas Under the Stars by Karen Swan
I’m sorry to say that I found this such a disappointing read. I downloaded the audio from the library and was looking forward to a festive read but it has nothing to do with Christmas at all. There is a blink and you miss it mention of Christmas and that’s it. It was an okay read but not what it was billed to be.
What I plan on reading next:
Finding Christmas by Karen Schaler
This was on my TBR for last week and I didn’t quite get to it so it’s definitely a priority for the coming week, I’m looking forward to this one.
Last Christmas by Emma Thompson & Greg Wise
I’m also really keen to get to this as I love having a Christmas book that I can dip in and out of in December.
The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale
I’ve had the ebook of this on my TBR ever since it was first published so when I spotted the audio book on my library app this week I immediately downloaded it. This will definitely be my next audio book and I can’t wait!
One Christmas Star by Mandy Baggot
I got this book on Kindle when it was free recently so I think I’m going to buy the audio book so I can part-read and part-listen to this one. I love Mandy’s Christmas books so I have high hopes for this one. I’ve previously read and reviewed One Wish in Manhattan by Mandy Baggot and I adored it!
What have you been reading this week? I’d love to hear. And if you take part in WWW Wednesdays or This Week in Books please feel free to leave your link below and I’ll make sure to visit and comment on your post. 🙂

Foodporn
Just like anything else, what you eat is who you are then it is only nature that “displaying food choices to others is an expression of cultural capital but also of one’s aspirations.” (McDonnell, pg. 241) If you watch any popular lifestyle YouTubers’ What I Eat in a Day kind of videos, it is not hard to notice that most of them show a very healthy lifestyle. Most of them stick to a very clean and organic diet. Among those YouTubers, many of them are vegetarians or vegans. As a matter of fact, they sometimes even get attacked for having something that’s not a raw green vegetable. Like any other cultural creations, there is a trend and there is a hierarchy when it comes to food. Healthy organic diet is on the top of the pyramid and junk food such as McDonald’s or Popo tarts are on the bottom. Although a healthy diet is certainly beneficial, it is also important to take the cost factor into consideration when examining food. For starters, not everyone has the time and money to go to do grocery shopping at Wholefoods all the time. It is safe to say that only the affluent class gets to afford to maintain such lifestyles. Based on McDonnell’s idea of sharing food photograph being a way to “display their cultural capital to others.” (McDonnell, pg.242), foodporn essentially is another way of socioeconomic status displaying by selective self-presentation.
Tumblr media
That being said, it is also hard to ignore the huge impact foodporn and the technology that makes it possible in the first place have on culture in return. Although food is a cultural creation, it is different from other forms because its taste matters. Foodporn, on the other hand, is only able to focus on the visual part of the food and has to leave out the taste inevitably. As a result, restaurants now can have the worst tasting food possible but as long as they are ascetically pleasing or “instagramable”, it’s going to attract customers. For example, the rainbow grilled cheese, which is basically a grilled cheese with food coloring except it costs $6. Because people spend a lot of time online and clearly visual presentation is what matters the most when you see something online, a new category of food is created.

Food Porn
From January to May of this year, I studied abroad in Rome, Italy. As you might imagine, I was immediately immersed in a culture that placed tremendous value in the preparation and presentation of quality food. Afraid that I would forget about these dining experiences, I downloaded the app, Foodie. Foodie adjusts the filter to make the color of the food standout and directs the user to take photos from a variety of optimal angles; the end result being a highly aesthetic food picture. After reading Erin Metz McDonnell’s chapter, “Food Porn: The Conspicuous Consumption of Food in the Age of Digital Reproduction,” I noticed that a lot of the shots that I took met the criteria for which McDonnell describes the pornographic gaze and distinguishes food porn apart from regular shots of food and dining. Referencing the photos below, I use zoom and framing to establish a sense of intimacy. The zoom allows us to see the detail of the pasta and the intermingling of the noodles. The shot of the gnocchi from above and the spaghetti from a front view are a stark difference from what McDonnell describes as “the conventional, staid position of a diner” (259). The orientation of the gnocchi, with the delicate truffles on top, is a performance of exoticism and delicacy. Having it in the fore of the frame and contrasting it with the light color of the rest of the photo’s composition draws the eyes to the truffle. In the baguette, cheese and orange picture, the orange mimics McDonnell’s metaphor of the tangerine. Just like the tangerine, the orange serves as an allusion to female body parts.

Indeed, my food tracking behavior complies with those that Deborah Lupton outlines in her article, “Cooking, Eating, Uploading: Digital Food Cultures.” In the article, Lupton describes that food porn “are manipulated to incite feelings of desire or envy, and the emphasis on appearance over quality” (71). While the quality of the food surpassed my expectations, the main point still holds true: I would take these pictures to inspire feelings of envy among my friends and family who couldn’t share these experiences with me. In sharing these photos to my social media and blog, I felt a form of power and privilege to be able to treat myself to these experiences that others could not.
I also found myself agreeing with Lupton’s broader argument that engaging with food over digital media is accompanied by a variety of complications. As mining for data becomes increasingly pervasive, third-party sources will continuing using this data to make calculated judgements, which may have consequences far worse than paying premiums for insurance. I recently read, “The Greatest Number” by Theodore Porter and Adam Florin, where they talk about how collecting and analyzing data has changed over the past three centuries. At the end, Porter contends that the most dangerous part of the big data revolution is that data subjects become aware of the parameters by which their data is measured, and thus, act in adherence to these guidelines. For example, if we are aware of the data measurements that health insurance companies use to determine rates and premiums, we will be more likely to adjust our lifestyle in a way that ensures we will get the lowest rate. This is particularly dangerous as these parameters may not be universally healthy and people with certain health disorders will be at an inherent disadvantage. Those of us who own wearable technology already conform to the health standards set by certain companies and organizations. Apple Watch users, for example, will work out daily to “close their rings,” and work towards goals that achieve a perceivably healthier lifestyle. The watch face, pictured below, provides a baseline for what it means to live a healthier lifestyle which is may not be applicable to everyone.

Sunday Times Top-Ten Bestseller and Richard and Judy Book Club Choice.
I'll risk my life for you.
On 24 November Yasmin and her ten-year-old daughter Ruby set off on a journey across Northern Alaska. They're searching for Ruby's father, missing in the arctic wilderness.
More isolated with each frozen mile they cover, they travel deeper into an endless night. And Ruby, deaf since birth, must brave the darkness where sight cannot guide her.
She won't abandon her father. But winter has tightened its grip, and there is somebody out there who wants to stop them.
Somebody tracking them through the dark.
Praise for The Quality of Silence:
'There are many things to love about Lupton's third novel, not least its stunning evocation of the stark, beautiful Alaskan wilds. An elegant and icily unique thriller: you won't read anything like it this year' Observer
'Scary, suspenseful and so exquisitely, evocatively written. I found myself shivering as if I were there in Alaska with Ruby and her mother. Everything you want in a wonderful novel' Liane Moriarty, author of The Husband's Secret
'Ambitious and imaginative. Narrated in part by Ruby (her deafness is treated with great sensitivity), the landscape, wildlife and bitter climate of Alaska are powerfully drawn. Chilling in every sense, you won't want to step away from this story' Sunday Mirror
'A sophisticated thriller which brilliantly evokes the sublime and terrifying landscape of Alaska, the culture of the Inupiat people and the fragility of our planet' Sunday Telegraph
'Like a breath of icy air, this relentlessly tense thriller is also a child's-eye family drama like none other. Not since Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow have I shivered like this' Emma Donoghue, author of Room
'Will have you gripped form start to finish' Cosmopolitan
'A taut psychological thriller, The Quality of Silence will have your heart thumping. Masterful pacing, riveting plotting. Absolutely gripping' Louise Penny
'A literary slow burn, whose focus is as much on human endurance and a mother's relationship with her deaf daughter as the mystery of her husband's disappearance. This is Lupton at the height of her storytelling powers' Daily Mail
'A beautifully written thriller, and the way in which Lupton used the tundra as a metaphor for grief and faith in stunning. The voice of Ruby and her compassionate exploration of a life without sound only adds to the richness of the book' Press and Journal
'A wonderful writer . . . absolutely gripping' Jane Garvey, BBC Radio 2 Women's Hour
'The pressure is on to keep creating equally brilliant stores [and] Lupton has done that with The Quality of Silence' Red Magazine
'An elegant, chilling read from a writer who continues to stretch the bounds of suspense' William Landay, author of Defending Jacob

The world crossing, boundary breaking fantasy phenomenon for fans of Philip Pullman and Neil Gaiman. Welcome to ELSEWHERE. 'It's totally EXCELLENT, EPIC, PERFECT! No words. Would you kill to write a bestseller? Well Adrian Slater says that he’s prepared to do just that – and announces the fact in a creative writing class.
Lecturer Dudley Grose is convinced that Slater is a psychopath and means what he says. But the Dean of the university doesn’t believe him and neither do the cops.
But when a student on the course vanishes and her bathroom is awash with blood, the police wonder if Slater has actually carried out his threat, and if the book he’s writing contains the evidence that will put him away.
The Bestseller is a book about murder, but it’s also an insight into the creative writing process and how ePublishing has changed the rules for ever, creating a world where murder as entertainment might actually pay.
The Bestseller is a fast-paced novella of 53,000 words, about 200 pages, with a shocking twist in the tail.
It's already had a great five-star review from an Amazon Top 100 reviewer!
By Midnight - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) This review is from: The Bestseller (Kindle Edition)
Wannabee author Adrian Slater attends creative writing classes and reveals to the class he intends to commit a murder so he can have a factual basis for his novel.
Stephen Leather has come up with another engrossing thriller that at around 53,000 words provides an absorbing journey to an unexpected destination. Readers may think they have worked out the ending before reaching the climax but as they read on, the story takes a final twist - but you'll have to read the story to find out what happens!
His offerings have ranged from the short very gentle Inspector Zhang locked room mysteries; the excellent Dan (Spider) Shepherd series; the Jack Nightingale occult detective series through to the hard biting novellas specifically written as ebooks 'The Basement' and 'Once Bitten'. Those who found that for them 'The Basement' was a tad on the gory side will find 'The Bestseller' does not come into the same category; nor are there any vampires - I simply found 'The Bestseller' an excellent fast-paced thriller and would heartily recommend it.
The formatting and flow of the text is excellent with noticeably absent typos - something which can be a problem with some ebooks.
Stephen Leather is one of the UK's most successful thriller writers. He was a journalist for more than ten years on newspapers such as The Times, the Daily Mail and the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. Before that, he was employed as a biochemist for ICI, shovelled limestone in a quarry, worked as a baker, a petrol pump attendant, a barman, and worked for the Inland Revenue. He began writing full time in 1992. His bestsellers have been translated into more than ten languages. From his early career in IndyCar racing and on to his unparalleled success in Formula One, we learn in comprehensive, engaging and highly entertaining detail how a car actually works.
The world's foremost designer in Formula One, Adrian Newey OBE is arguably one of Britain's greatest engineers and this is his fascinating, powerful memoir.
How to Build a Car explores the story of Adrian's unrivalled 35-year career in Formula One through the prism of the cars he has designed, the drivers he has worked alongside and the races in which he's been involved.
A true engineering genius, even in adolescence Adrian's thoughts naturally emerged in shape and form - he began sketching his own car designs at the age of 12 and took a welding course in his school summer holidays.
Adrian Newey has designed for the likes of Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill, David Coulthard, Mika Hakkinen, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, always with a shark-like purity of purpose: to make the car go faster. And while his career has been marked by unbelievable triumphs, there have also been deep tragedies; most notably Ayrton Senna's death during his time at Williams in 1994.
