Christmas in Honeycutt
CH. 13: Clarity & CH. 14: Dreaming
"Honestly John!
It's embarrassing!"
"Keep your voice down, Mary." John shut the door of Mary’s bedroom behind them as she continued her rant.
"Why? Afraid your new boyfriend might hear me?"
"You are blowing things way out of proportion … and I am asking you to think about this like a rational human being!!" It took a lot to make John raise his voice, but she was certainly trying his patience …
She tossed her scarf into the side table. John barely catching the stole that came next.
"In front of God and everybody! You were … !"
John's heart stuttered for a minute … thinking she had seen them waltz … or worse … almost kiss?
“What? Mary?”
***the party returns from the Christmas Eve Gala and with it, lines are drawn, and clarity is needed ***

Creepy Bitches: Essays on Horror from Women in Horror is available now via BearManor Media. The 204-page paperback is edited by genre journalists Alyse Wax (The World of IT) and Rebekah McKendry (All the Creatures Were Stirring).
Contributors include Rhianne Paz Bergado, Meredith Borders, Kaydee Cage, BJ Colangelo, Zena Dixon, Paula Haifley, Heather Hendershot, Heidi Honeycutt, Sandy King, Shannon McGrew, Carly Lane-Perry, Sonia Lupher, Erin Maxwell, Stacie Ponder, Debbie Rochon, Amy Searles, Chelsea Stardust, Sarah Stubbs, and Jenn Wexler.
Karen McKenna designed the cover art. The synopsis is below.
For far too long, horror has been considered a male genre, made by men, marketed to men, and enjoyed by men. But in the last decade, we have seen an emergence of women as horror filmmakers, academics, and fans, all making sure their voices were heard! Editors Alyse Wax and Rebekah McKendry, PhD have gathered some of the greatest minds in horror film theory—all women—to discuss their love of the genre.
The scope of Creepy Bitches covers all areas of the horror genre, film industry, and fandom – from the Cronenbergian experience of giving birth to how The X-Files plays in the #MeToo moment; from growing up at Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion to growing up in a video store. The book explores gender roles in The Creature From the Black Lagoon trilogy and Mexican horror cinema, as well as the bisexual energy of I Know What You Did Last Summer. It covers the therapeutic benefits of watching horror and how to love home invasion movies again after experiencing real-life trauma. But the book’s overarching purpose is to celebrate new voices and increase our understanding of women in the horror realm, celebrating that horror does not only scare us, but helps us understand the world around us, providing a lens through which to view and explore our own selves.
Order Creepy Bitches from Amazon.

Notes on The Palm-Wine Drinkard by Amos Tutuola
by Erin Honeycutt
When I first came across Amos Tutuola’s ‘The Palm-Wine Drinkard’ I was convinced the specific nature of his lists were not flippant. Perhaps it was more my relationship to numerical facts within a narrative that made me feel convinced that there was a mapping taking place within the story that was not only geographically charting a landscape as it wallowed back and forth between being quantifiable and being completely unquantifiable. It became a map of the possible ways to measure a novel.
‘The Palm-Wine Drinkard’ was the first African novel published in English outside of Africa. The quest tale written in a Pidgin English is told in the first person. It follows a man addicted to palm wine, made from fermented palm tree sap and used in ceremonies all over West Africa. The narrator is the son of a rich man and can therefore afford his own tapster, but when the tapster dies, the narrator begins a journey to Dead’s Town to find his tapster. In the desperate search for his tapster, he enters a world of supernatural creatures and goes through various tests until he gains a magic egg that offers him endless palm wine.
Tutuola found a way to condense an entire universe with its specific temporalities and intricacies of relation into literature, reminding the reader of the fact that the first novels were spiritual autobiographies. How does one translate a new construct as old as time into the shape we know as ‘literature’? Tutola has markers for time, lengths of time, distances travelled, lists of measurements from beginning to end: the more specific, the more incalculable. I took notes as I read the map:

The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern
Rating: ✩✩✩✩{✩1/2}
~ Genre ~ Metaphysical and Visionary Fiction
☀ Summary ☀
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Rating: ✩✩✩✩✩
~ Genre ~ Young Adult Fiction
☀ Summary ☀
The Hate U Give is a groundbreaking, thought-provoking debut novel inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, about a teen girl who is the only witness to her friend's fatal shooting by a police officer. Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor black neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, Khalil's death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Starr's best friend at school suggests he may have had it coming. When it becomes clear the police have little interest in investigating the incident, protesters take to the streets and Starr's neighborhood becomes a war zone. What everyone wants to know is: What really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does -- or does not -- say could destroy her community. It could also endanger her life.

Saving Ceecee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman
Rating: ✩✩✩✩{✩1/2}
~ Genre ~ Women’s Fiction
☀ Summary ☀
Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. For years, she has been the caretaker of her mother, Camille, the town’s tiara-wearing, lipstick-smeared laughingstock, a woman who is trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen of Georgia. When tragedy strikes, Tootie Caldwell, CeeCee’s long-lost great-aunt, comes to the rescue and whisks her away to Savannah. There, CeeCee is catapulted into a perfumed world of prosperity and Southern eccentricity—one that appears to be run entirely by strong, wacky women. From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons; to Tootie's all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones; to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer.

What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman
Rating: ✩✩✩✩
~ Genre ~ Contemporary Fiction
☀ Summary ☀
Ten years ago, Izzy Stone's mother fatally shot her father while he slept. Devastated by her mother's apparent insanity, Izzy, now seventeen, refuses to visit her in prison. But her new foster parents, employees at the local museum, have enlisted Izzy's help in cataloging items at a long-shuttered state asylum. There, amid piles of abandoned belongings, Izzy discovers a stack of unopened letters, a decades-old journal, and a window into her own past. Clara Cartwright, eighteen years old in 1929, is caught between her overbearing parents and her love for an Italian immigrant. Furious when she rejects an arranged marriage, Clara's father sends her to a genteel home for nervous invalids. But when his fortune is lost in the stock market crash, he can no longer afford her care--and Clara is committed to the public asylum. Even as Izzy deals with the challenges of yet another new beginning, Clara's story keeps drawing her into the past. If Clara was never really mentally ill, could something else explain her own mother's violent act? Piecing together Clara's fate compels Izzy to re-examine her own choices--with shocking and unexpected results.
