So I am fond of having epigraphs for my work. An epigraph is a phrase, quotation, or poem that is set at the beginning of a longer work and establishes the tone. In Flowers of Mordor, it's the above quotes by Tolkien and Mary Oliver (while I don't love Mary Oliver in general, the quote seemed fitting). In Rivendell it's the e e cummings poem above. Valinor does not have one, though maybe it should. And I've recently come up with one for The Golden Hall.

It's from Derry Girls, and it is:

"Be careful, child, of the doll made of glass - for if you hold her too tightly, she will break, and you will bleed."

It's Erin's overwrought attempt at poetry, but I would argue that the context that makes it so. If it were removed from the context, I could see tumblr going wild over it. And it makes sense for The Golden Hall -- Lothíriel is fragile, and when she breaks, she certainly makes Éomer bleed. She even describes herself as a decorative object.

Too overwrought? Maybe. But the whole story is Grade A angst, and the quote is asking to be included. I even wrote, in my head, a middle-of-the story scene where Éomer draws just such a metaphor (because he would) and I considered renaming the whole work "The Glass Doll," though in the end decided to keep the title as it is. Because I'm creative like that. Every work I've written recently is named after a location: Mordor, Valinor, Rivendell, and now Edoras.
