Close to 500 jets ordered, Dassault decides to increase Rafale's production rate
With 211 Rafale jets still needing to be delivered and more potential orders, Dassault wants to increase the rate to be able to fulfill its deliveries.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/03/2024 - 18:40in Military
With Rafale's sales increasing, Dassault now needs to increase the production rate, as the deliveries of the French fighter were below the planned for 2023. And that's what the French manufacturer announced for this year.
The French manufacturer received 60 new orders for its fighter only last year, with 42 of them for the French Air Force, with deliveries ?? between 2027 and 2032. Another 18 jets came from an order from Indonesia this year, as a final part of a contract signed in 2022 for a total of 42 Rafales.
With these orders, the total number of Rafale orders is approaching the 500 mark. In 2022 alone, Dassault won 92 orders.
Tumblr media
Even with the number of orders increasing, the number of deliveries is currently short of these market successes. Dassault wanted to deliver 15 Rafales to customers in 2023, but only 13 were delivered. According to the head of the company, Eric Trappier, this will change soon. “We are working for Phase 2,” the managing director of Dassault said on March 6 at the annual press conference. This means production should increase to almost two jets per month, with an initial goal of 20 deliveries for 2024.
In the medium term, according to Trappier, the annual production rate is expected to continue to increase and stabilize by at least 23 copies from 2025. However, the "challenges" in the supply chain must first be overcome, the head of Dassault emphasized in his statement. It's "a bit like the egg and the chicken," says Trappier: "If you had told me five years ago that we were moving on to the next phase, I would have said that we couldn't predict this, we should sell first. Therefore, there is a limit to increasing the production chains, but we actually need some time." However, the final assembly in Mérignac offers enough space for new advances.

"We are making the transition to the production of 3 aircraft per month, from a rate that was lower in units in 2020, when production was stagnant," explained Eric Trappier.
Of a total of 495 Rafales ordered - 234 for France and 261 for export, not including used jets ?? - 211 would still need to be produced at the end of 2023, 141 for exports and 70 for France. On the one hand, this delay guarantees the future of the program for at least ten years, but on the other hand, Dassault is still committed to making customers more enthusiastic about Rafale.

According to Trappier, discussions continue with Saudi Arabia, which may order 54 Rafales. However, here you are competing with the Eurofighter and the Boeing F-15EX.
The French Air and Space Force is currently preparing for the planned Rafale F5 standard. Dassault expects to receive its first French order later this year.

Six Rafale of the Hellenic Air Force are being ferried to Greece from the Istres site on 19 January 2022. The Greek Prime Minister celebrates their arrival during a ceremony at Tanagra Air Base in the presence of Eric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation
Dassault Rafale is the first omnirole combat aircraft by design. It has the capability to carry out different complex combat assignments during the same sortie, be it ground attack, beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air combat or interceptions.
A scion of the Mirage family the Rafale from Dassault Aviation of France is the latest and the most potent twin-engine combat platform to burst on the military aviation scene at the dawn of the 21st century.
The Rafale has state-of-the-art weapon/mission system and has outstanding load-carrying capability. Designed as a compact high-tech fighter capable of carrying a huge external load of fuel tanks, bombs and missiles, it can carry over 15,000 kg of fuel and weapon load, quite an accomplishment for an aircraft weighing less than 10 tonnes when empty. The aircraft is capable of carrying a wide variety of weapons including precision guided weapons with high stand-off ranges in varying combinations. At its maximum permissible all up weight, the Rafale can take off at two and a half times its empty weight—more than any other fighter in its class. Besides it can carry weapons and pods together along with external fuel tanks giving it the combined benefit of both extended mission range and maximum fire power. This capability also accords the platform unrivalled flexibility in mission planning and execution.
Currently, the aircraft has been cleared to operate the following weapons:
MICA, air-to-air interception, combat and self-defence BVR missiles, in their IR (heat-seeking) and EM (active radar homing) versions.
AASM stand-off, modular and propelled, air-to-ground precision guided weapons with inertial/GPS and inertial/GPS/infrared guidance kits, or with the future inertial/GPS/laser guidance variant.
SCALP long-range stand-off missiles.
Exocet anti-ship missiles.
Laser-guided bombs.
Conventional air-to-ground ordnance.
Nexter 30 M 791 high-power 30mm gun carried internally and capable of firing 2,500 rounds per minute.
The upcoming Meteor extreme long-range air-to-air missile.
Customer-selected weapons

India informs France of its decision to acquire 26 Rafale Marine jets
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/11/2023 - 09:00 in Military
India formally communicated to France its decision to acquire 26 naval variants of the Rafale fighter for the Indian Navy, starting the acquisition process under an intergovernmental structure, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.
In July, the Ministry of Defense approved the purchase of Rafale Marine jets from France, mainly for deployment on board the locally built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
The issue of the acquisition of the Rafale Marine jets figured during the recent visit of the Minister of Defense, Rajnath Singh, to Paris.
India sent a letter of requisition to the French government, formally communicating its decision to acquire Dassault Aviation jets under the government-to-government structure.
Negotiations on prices and other details are expected to take place after the Ministry of Defense receives a response from the French side, people familiar with the matter said.
Tumblr media
Earlier this month, the president and CEO of Dassault Aviation, Eric Trappier, visited New Delhi and discussed various aspects of the proposed acquisition by India.
The Ministry of Defense said in July that the acquisition of the jets along with associated auxiliary equipment, including weapons systems and spare parts, would be based on an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) and that the price and other terms of purchase will be negotiated with the French government after taking into account all relevant aspects.
The Indian Air Force bought 36 aircraft in flight conditions. There is an opinion in the IAF that it should opt for at least two more Rafale jet squadrons.
Defense and strategic ties between India and France have increased in recent years.
In July, India and France announced a series of innovative defense cooperation projects, including the joint development of jet engines and helicopters and the construction of three Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy.
The two strategic partners also expressed a commitment to cooperate in the co-development and co-production of advanced defense technologies, including for the benefit of third countries.

You can lie but sooner or later the truth comes out: Cong to Modi on Rafale
The Congress Wednesday hailed the Supreme Court's decision allowing leaked documents to be used by petitioners seeking review of the Rafale judgement, saying skeletons in the "scam" are tumbling out and now there is "no official secrets act" to hide behind for the Modi government.
The Supreme Court Wednesday allowed leaked documents to be relied upon by petitioners seeking review of its Rafale judgement and dismissed the government's preliminary objections claiming "privilege" over them.
"Modiji, you can run and lie as much as you want but sooner or later the truth comes out. The skeletons in Rafale scam are tumbling out one by one. And now there is 'no official secrets act' to hide behind," Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.
"SC has upheld a time honoured legal principle; A rattled Modiji had threatened to invoke Official Secrets Act against independent journalists for exposing his corruption on Rafale.Don't worry Modiji, an investigation is going to take place now, whether you like it or not," he said in a series of tweets. Rafale deal: Why did Dassault choose Reliance over HAL? The CEO responds
Tumblr media
Dassault Aviation's joint venture with Reliance represents around 10 per cent of the offset investments under the Rafale jet deal, Dassault CEO Eric Trappier has said.
"We're in talks with about 100 Indian firms, including around 30 with which we've already confirmed partnerships," Trappier told AFP.
Separately on Thursday, speaking at a briefing in Paris, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reiterated the government's claim that it had no idea that Dassault Aviation would team up with Reliance Group, run by Anil Ambani.
Several reports say Dassault was forced to choose Reliance by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, despite its having almost no experience in the aviation sector.
On the eve of Sitharaman's visit, French investigative website Mediapart quoted the notes of a meeting between Dassault management and workers' representatives which described the choice of Reliance as "imperative and compulsory". Read Complete Article
