Okay so I've got this weird question (fun to ponder tho)

How do you think Rafal would react if Sophie slapped him?!

(Both the prequel Rafal and the TLEA Rafal.)

And perhaps the prequel Rhian too. Although I'm mainly curious about Rafal (since he has more of a connection with Sophie, I think.)

Ahaha! This is absolutely a fun one on this very fine day, Anon. Here goes—

Because prequel Rafal most likely wouldn't have a connection to, a care in the world about, or any feelings toward Sophie, she could just be another student to him. And if she slapped him, a blatant show of disrespect to her School Master, I think his first impulse would be to send her to the Doom Room, or to react explosively, retaliating with sorcery. Maybe, he'd slam her to the wall. We've seen that happen with the pirates and he has a short fuse.

If he stopped to think about why she'd slap him, if he were in a more tolerant state of mind, say, as Fala in his disguise, he might be able to reevaluate whatever he said to her to have earned that slap. (Probably, he would have said something about how she's worthless as an unconventional, Everish, and superficial Never, who only cares about appearances, who is a disgrace to her side because she wants to find True Love, and who'd never amount to anything, I'd imagine.)

And, maybe, just maybe, she'd actually break through the ice with the slap, or by following it with some critical yet truthful jab about him, thereby reaching his humanity and inspiring some self-reflection on his part.

Yet, I do not believe Sophie reaching him or succeeding in cuing him into recognizing his flaws would be the most likely outcome. I'm not sure what other fault-finding he'd do with her, and we know he just loves disproportionate retribution, which is why I'm most inclined to say: torture it is.

TLEA "Rafal" is the more uncertain answer.

He does have feelings for her and has exhibited sadistic and masochistic traits. (Remember the moment when they kissed after Sophie returned? He seemed to actually enjoy his bleeding lip for some reason.)

So, this may seem controversial, but he might redden and could potentially feel aroused and/or disoriented/dazed and be unable to react, frozen in place, considering that she opposed his authority, and that he hasn't been contradicted by anyone in about 200 years.

Besides, regardless of whichever of these would occur, I don't think he'd be able to keep a clear head in this particular instance.

If that aroused thought process happened, I think he would try not to lose his cool or get flustered, and would flee the scene abruptly, leaving Sophie to wonder how he took the slap (and unfortunately, worry for her life and what could possibly be in store for her, if he came back).

I'm not sure if her slapping him (probably due to his daily proposal ritual, him telling her to address him as "Master," or something equally controlling and irritating to her) would change their power dynamic. But that possibility does exist.

If their dynamic changed, maybe he would yield to her more often than he already did in canon, or could involve her in more major wartime decisions because slapping him definitely would've exhibited even more of her force of will and agency to him.

If their dynamic went in the opposite direction, he might become paranoid that she lifted a hand against him at all, and try to monitor her more than he already did, exercising his authority over her more oppressively.

Another fairly realistic option would be their having a verbal argument or a shouting match. But, it could be one-sided, if Rafal just decided to endure some kind of berating from her.

He might just allow her to get away with yelling at him while he either defends himself, calmly, maintaining his composure without yelling. Or, he could take everything in stride, or at least silently, and listen to her, seemingly unperturbed or perhaps, wincing the whole time at her sharp tongue? Internally, he could be very pained by all the horrible, hurtful things she's saying, that he would probably deserve. Another route is that he could, strategically, agree with her and yield to her, to regain her favor, but that could be too transparent of him.

Eventually, Sophie would run out of fuel for her vituperative fire and halt her tirade against him, and she might be a little remorseful or blush, but he'd let it slide because it's her. And he needs her.

He'd probably accept any apology, half-apology, blame-shifting, or non-apology from her, just to stay on her good side. And if he were able to swallow his pride, he could give his own speech as he's wont to do, appear to understand and even empathize with her societally-oppressed, downtrodden Evil soul and heart, and apologize himself, like any good Evil "activist" would.

(Personally, I like to interpret TLEA Rafal as The Ultimate Evil Activist™. So, er, take that however you want.)

I think he'd hold himself back from violence against her if it crossed his mind because he probably has the self-control to know that aggression would only worsen his chances with her, no matter what satisfaction it could bring him in the short term.

Alternatively, he could seize her and initiate a kiss against the wall in the same forceful way Sophie did to him once.

If not that, shock is another option I can go back to. He knew, to an extent, that she viewed him as "all-powerful" even though he wasn't. Maybe, he'd be impressed by how brazen she was to slap him at all. He'd never admit that to her, I think, but he'd probably glow inside about the fact that he's (why not credit himself?!) influenced her enough (ahem, provoked her enough) to become more violent, even if it backfired against him. Plus, he could harness that violence of hers during the upcoming war and redirect, train, refine it, towards a more productive cause. Their victory. Because, that violence is also an indicator that his plan for her to embrace Evil wholeheartedly is succeeding, even if his parallel plan to court her is simultaneously failing. (Picture mental fist-pumping, like: yes, yes, yes, basically.)

So, there's a chance he'd remain expressionless. However, he could display shock on his face if he weren't able to control his emotions, or he could grin like a pathetic, love-sloshed idiot, much to her disdain or ire at not being taken seriously.

Whether or not he'd recognize and agree that he was in the wrong due to whatever he'd done to earn himself the slap, he could also try to make it up to her, whether his apology is sincere or not. I'm sure that in either case, he'd resort to personally bringing her (or materializing from afar) more and more opulent gifts—because, what more does he know about her that he could use to his advantage? Not a lot, to be fair.

Maybe, the gifts would appease her while he temporarily stays out of her sight, so she doesn't get mad at him again?

The least likely scenario, in my opinion, would occur if he truly didn't know whether slapping were a thing that "normal young people" did while "dating," and he took the slap as a sign of things going regularly, if not badly.

To be fair, he's watched Ever courtships for years (and he surely must've observed Agatha punch Tedros in the eye over the Gargoyle debacle), but this is Evil's Love—something unheard of, something never before seen. Should it be held to new standards? If so, what standards? What should he expect? What should he set, if the standards are up to him to determine? Should he really hope to imitate the Evers' love on every front? He's had zero successful past relationships, so how could he know?

If this happened, I bet he'd obsess over the meaning of Sophie's slap.

He might have to process it and puzzle over what exactly went wrong for days before he returned to set things right with Sophie. And if he did that, he'd potentially inadvertently abandon her in the tower for those several days, leaving her to wonder if she's going to starve there as her punishment, or die from "the plague," assuming he forgot about everything else and his obsession took hold of him.

(And leaving her alone could be a strategy itself, whether intentional or not, so she would begin to crave his presence again.)

This would also mean, he'd have deal with far more external complications because the assumption that he'd desert Sophie for a short period, the way he did to Rhian for six months in the prequels, would mean he'd also desert his war-training responsibilities, leaving the Old and New students to fend for themselves, and perhaps, to devolve into anarchy—if he's not quick enough to return, provided that his Deans failed to maintain order and discipline during his absence. In fact, I could see Aric actively undermining Lady Lesso's efforts, and encouraging vicious hallway brawls and overall barbarity with Rafal gone.

Also, his love was never "enough" for his brother in the past—that could easily spiral into self-doubt, even if his ego would protect against it. Then again, he's likely more sensitive to rejection if it's from her specifically since he actually values her opinions of him. I feel like he'd just brood in the no-longer-Blue Forest, sit there and do nothing but cycle that thought around and around, because, his plan, his plan that he's had for 200 years, his last hope, is currently falling through all around him, all due to one slap, and what if that means all hope is lost!? All that work for nothing. A terrifying prospect. What then? He'll have nothing if he doesn't have Sophie by his side.

I think he'd know better than to think that so quickly though. Dramatizing things just entertains me.

Now for Rhian.

Rise Rhian could easily say something about the inferiority of Evil, and that could've insulted Sophie indirectly because I don't believe he would, while still Good, stoop to insulting her directly.

He'd probably just assign her a benign punishment, like dishwashing duties, or confine her to her dorm, given that she is a student and technically one of his wards, even if she's a Never because in this case, she acted against him, not the Evil School Master. So, perhaps, it wouldn't turn out like it did in book 1 with Lady Lesso. If he had no jurisdiction over the Nevers though, the punishment could be the Doom Room, if the decision fell to Rafal. And Rafal would not give a student preferential treatment if they slapped his brother!

Now, if Rhian were sympathetic enough to Sophie and her ongoing suffering in Rafal's School, he could cover the incident up and spare her. Let's face it: while Good, he seems like the lenient, bleeding-heart sort. Maybe, to him, it'd be the right thing to do because she seems kind of fragile and vulnerable. And she's Everish, which could appeal to him emotionally.

Then again, Rise Rhian has poor judgment, so maybe he'd stall and overthink deciding on any course of action, and wouldn't know what to do with her. He might not even feel like he could bring himself to discipline her, and might just continually obsess over it, as the indecision eats away at him. And, in the moment, maybe, he'd just flush red and tear up a little because she's been so cruel to him!

Fall Rhian, on the other hand, would probably insult her and do it so scathingly well. If she slapped him... she'd probably be a dead girl walking at that point. Could he incinerate her? Very possibly.

Midway through Fall, Rhian might just assign her a demanding punishment or task, really, of the same nature (and severity?) as Midas'.

Sombron was not invited due to being a bastard, plus what he eats is people (though I suppose he didn't actually digest Hyacinth, he must've coughed the guy's corpse up later like a giant hairball in order to make a Corrupted from it). While the F-16s piloted by Ukraine prepare to duel against the Russian Su-35s, this will be a conflict between Western and Russian views on how a fighter should be.

In the skies of Ukraine, one of the most dramatic fighter duels in decades is taking shape between an aged but highly powerful Western jet and one of Russia's most advanced fighters: the battle of the F-16 Fighting Falcon against the Sukhoi Su-35. Who has the best chance of winning a fight?

This will be more than a fighter confrontation. It will be a battle of philosophies between the Russian conception of fighters optimized for air combat, versus the Western conception of jets equally adept at air-to-air and air-to-ground combat.

It is also a battle between the old and the new. The F-16s that Ukraine will receive were designed in the 1970s, although they have been heavily updated over the years. However, desperate to replace its ever-dinquering fleet of Soviet-era Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters, Ukraine will be pleased to receive 45 or more used F-16s from Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway, which are replacing their Falcons with F-35 stealth fighters. With Ukrainian pilots currently being trained in the US and other countries, the first F-16s piloted by Ukrainians will be able to fly in the middle of this year.

The Su-35 made its combat debut during Russia's intervention in 2016 in Syria. But the war in Ukraine marks the true baptism of fire of the Su-35 against an opponent equipped with modern fighters and anti-aircraft missiles.

Comparing the F-16 to the Su-35 is not easy. The F-16 is a fourth-generation aircraft that entered service in the late 1970s alongside the F-15 Eagle and the Soviet Su-27 and MiG-29. The Su-35 is considered part of the 4.5 generation, which are fourth-generation upgraded fighters that were introduced in the late 1990s, including the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and MiG-35.

"This is not a criticism of the F-16," said Brynn Tannehill, a defense expert and former U.S. Navy aviator, "but it was designed in the 1970s."

Anyway, the risks could not be greater. Although fighters manufactured in the US and Russia have been hurting since the Korean War in 1950, the next confrontation in the skies of Ukraine will be vital. Russian air power has performed poorly, despite numerical and technological superiority in Ukraine, but recent air attacks using glider bombs have devastated the Ukrainian defenses. To stop the constant Russian bombing and launch a successful counter-offensive, Ukraine will have to at least challenge air control and ideally be able to launch its own air strikes.

Viper and Flanker

The F-16 Fighting Falcon (commonly known as "Viper" and occasionally as "Lawn Dart") was conceived out of shame. During the Vietnam War, the most powerful nation in the world failed to dominate the small air force of North Vietnam. One of the reasons was that the U.S. military was using aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom - a powerful but heavy fighter, originally designed to intercept Soviet bombers instead of agile MiGs in air combat.

This stimulated a controversial group of innovators - the legendary "fighter mafia" - to convince the U.S. Air Force that it needed a small, light and relatively cheap fighter that could perform dogfights, instead of relying on long-range air-to-air missiles, as the F-4 had. The result was one of the most prolific modern jets, with more than 4,600 built since 1976, used by 25 countries and growing. He also saw more combat than most current fighters, especially by the U.S. and Israeli air forces.

"It's a good aircraft in practically everything, but it's not the best in anything."

The Viper is about 15 meters long, 10 meters long and weighs about 10 tons. It can reach a speed of Mach 2 (double the speed of sound), is highly maneuverable and is armed with a 20 mm cannon, as well as 11 hardpoints to transport weapons and lenable tanks, as well as pods to block radars and identify ground targets for accurately guided ammunition. Its exact weaponry in Ukrainian hands will depend on the ammunition that the US and Europe agree to send, but the F-16 is equally formidable in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. In addition to the air-to-air missiles guided by medium-range AIM-120 radar and the AIM-9 Sidewinder heat-guided missiles, it can carry JDAM glider pumps, HARM anti-radiation missiles and probably European long-range missiles, such as the Storm Shadow from Great Britain. The advanced medium-range air-to-air missile AIM-120, or AMRAAM, is particularly important. Unlike Ukraine's current radar-guided air-to-air missiles, which require the launch aircraft to continuously keep the radar fixed on the target, the AMRAAM has a "shot and forget" on-board radar that locks autonomously on the target.

But versatility in all things means less capacity in anything. “You can use the F-16 for air-to-air combat, but it's not as good as an F-15′′,” says Tannehill. “You can use it for approximate air support, but it's not as good as an A-10. It can perform ground attacks, but it's not as good as an F-15E Strike Eagle. ... It's a good aircraft in practically everything, but it's not the best at all."

The Su-35 also has a complicated story. It is a descendant of the Su-27 of the late 1970s (NATO codename: "Flanker"), an aircraft of air superiority designed for air-to-air combat. It was intended to be the Soviet response to the F-15: just look at the two twin-engine aircraft to see that they have more in common than the F-15 has with the single-engine F-16.

The Su-35 was conceived in the early 1980s as a more maneuverable version of the Su-27 Flanker (hence the Su-35 being known as "Flanker-E" or "Super Flanker"). After Sukhoi tried several prototypes under the Soviet and then Russian governments, the current Su-35 took shape in the early 2000s as an improved Su-27 with some air-to-ground capacity that makes it more similar to fighter-bombers such as the F-16.

The Su-35 simply surpasses the F-16. With a length of 22 meters and a wingspan of 15 meters, the Su-35 is about 50% larger than the F-16; with more than 18 tons, it has almost twice the weight of the Viper. The Su-35 is armed with a 30 mm cannon, as well as a dozen hardpoints capable of launching a series of air-to-air and air-to-ground ammunition. What is of particular concern to Ukraine and the West are its R-37 and R-77 long-range radar air-to-air missiles, which are "shir and forget" missiles and which can hit Ukrainian aircraft out of range of Ukrainian aviation.

To complicate things is the variety of aircraft involved. There are many variants of the half-century-old F-16, including several "blocks" of U.S. Air Force Vipers, as well as country-specific models for nations like Israel. The latest version is the F-16 Block 70, with an APG-83 AESA radar, an updated engine and conformal fuel tanks.

But the Danish and Dutch F-16s promised to Ukraine are models of the Cold War. They are F-16 MLU (Mid Life Update) models, which are European F-16A/Bs from the late 1970s that were updated in the mid-1990s with features such as an improved AN/APG-66(V)2 radar (an older non-AESA sensor), GPS navigation and the ability to launch AIM-120 missiles. It is reasonable to assume that they are inferior to the most recent Vipers, but much superior to the F-16s of the Cold War era.

"With the Mid-Life update, what you should keep in mind is that these aircraft have been continuously updated with software that allows them to use modern weapons," explains Tannehill.

The Su-35 is more maneuverable, but that won't help

Usually, a smaller vehicle is more maneuverable than a larger vehicle. But for jet fighters, it's not that simple. There are a variety of technical factors, such as alar load (advantage: F-16) and thrust-weight ratio for fast acceleration (advantage: Su-35).

What is remarkable is that the Su-35 is considered "supermanoeuverable", largely because it uses thrust vectorization, which employs directionable nozzles to direct the thrust of the motor. Using a capacity found in only a few aircraft - including the F-22 and the Su-30MKI - the Su-35 can perform the spectacular "Sobra maneuver", where the fighter slows down abruptly and stays in the tail, forcing an enemy aircraft behind to overtake by speed.

Although impressive in air shows, the Cobra maneuver also deprives an aircraft of speed and energy, which is not good in air combat. But the real problem is that, although maneuverability was a problem in World War II or the Vietnam War, it is not an important factor in modern air combat. If today's jets go into combat, it is probably because one or both sides made a mistake or did not have the technical capacity for an attack out of visual range. The tendency is that modern fighters, such as the F-35, act as aerial snipers that stealther their prey with a long-range air-to-air missile that the target does not even detect until it is too late.

"What really matters is your radar, your range, your [network] connectivity and how unobservable [stealth] you are," says Tannehill. "The radar determines when you see the other guy. The range allows you to determine when you can shoot. Stealth allows you to get closer."

In fact, this has been the standard in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Fearing advanced ground-to-air missiles, such as the Russian S-400 and the US Patriot, both Russian and Ukrainian aircraft remained on their respective sides of the front line, instead of penetrating enemy airspace. Even if the Su-35 is really supermaneuvrable - which has not yet been proven in real combat - the war in Ukraine did not provide an opportunity to demonstrate this characteristic.

The Su-35 is the best sniper

Unfortunately for Ukraine, the Su-35 is deadly in air combat beyond visual range, as well as in air combat. First, the Su-35 can locate the F-16 before the Viper detects the Flanker-E; the Su-35's Irbis-E radar can detect air targets up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) away, according to its manufacturer, Tikhomirov.

Irbis is not very modern. It is a passive electronic scanning (PESA) system, which uses a single transmitter/receiver to emit a single beam on a single frequency through multiple antennas. This allows the radar beam to be electronically directed to different directions, without the need to mechanically rotate the antennas. This is not as advanced as the AESA radars used in many Western fighters - including the latest models F-16 Block 70 and Block 72 - which use multiple transmitters to emit multiple signals at multiple frequencies simultaneously.

EFSA radars can track multiple targets and are less susceptible to interference. However, Ukraine is not receiving F-16s equipped with EFSA. The AN/APG-66(V)2 radar of the F-16 MLU is a pulse doppler system with mechanically directed antennas that offer slower scanning at one frequency at a time. "The pulse-doppler is part of the 1980s crop," says Tannehill.

In addition, the Su-35 radar is more powerful. It has 5 kilowatts of power compared to only 770 watts of the AN/APG-66(V)2, says Tannehill. "I'm not saying he can see five times farther or ten times farther, but he can see much further than an APG-66."

As if the upper radar were not enough, the Su-35 has - on paper - better missiles. The R-37 has an estimated target detection range of 400 kilometers (249 miles), while the R-77-1 has a range of 110 kilometers (68 miles). These active "shoot and forget" guided missiles hit the neighborhood of their target and then use their own radar on board to hit the target.

The effectiveness of these missiles at such extreme distances is questionable, but against the oldest planes in Ukraine, the Su-35 has been lethal. The Su-35 and Su-30SM, flying safely behind the Russian lines at 30,000 feet, are focusing on Ukrainian jets with their Irbis radar and then firing R-37 and R-77-1 missiles. Ukrainian fighters are armed with Soviet-era R-27 missiles, with a range of about 80 kilometers. These weapons from the early 1980s use semi-active radar that requires the launcher aircraft to continuously illuminate the target with a radar beam.

“Ukrainian pilots confirm that Russia's Su-30SM and Su-35S completely outperform the fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force on a technical level,” according to a November 2022 report by the British think tank Royal United Services Institute. “Throughout the war, Russian fighters have often managed to lock the radar and launch R-77-1 missiles against Ukrainian fighters more than 100 kilometers [62 miles] away. Even if these shots have a low probability of slaughter, they force Ukrainian pilots to be on the defensive or run the risk of being hit while still very out of their effective range, and some of these long-range shots hit the target."

The US agreed to arm Ukraine's F-16s with the advanced medium-range air-to-air missile AIM-120, first deployed in 1991. Although the U.S. Air Force website lists the range of the AMRAAM as more than 20 miles, it is estimated that the latest AIM-120D has a range of about 160 kilometers, which would surpass the R-77, but not the R-37. New Delhi: India has already paid half of the amount fixed for Rafale deal amounting to Rs 59,000 crore. This deal was signed in 2016 for 36 fighter aircraft. Those who will be fully operational till September-October 2022, as per the need of the Indian Air Change aircraft, because they will take 6 months to software certification after coming to India. Then after Rafale delivery will be done till April 2022.

Defense Ministry sources say that the deal has been paid Rs 34,000 crore. This year, Rs 13,000 crore will be paid. The first installment of 15 percent was paid in September 2016 after the deal was signed.

At that time, the IAF had deployed project management and advance training teams in France. Then payment was made for critical design reviews and documentation.

The source said that the final installment will be paid in 2022 when all the aircraft will arrive in India. Air Force will get four Rafale fighter aircraft delivery from France in September this year. After which the main team of about 10 pilots, 10 flying engineers and 40 technicians will be given training.

According to the scheduled schedule, this aircraft will reach Ambala airbase in Haryana by May 2020. The Air Force of India plans to have a squadron of Rafale (18 aircraft) deployed in Ambala and Haasimra. So that Pakistan and China could be monitored.

Do you agree with the idea that Nel being a romantic option ruins the "found family " theme of Engage ?

Well, while I pretty much see where those people are comming from... I don't really agree.

Mainly cause of how Nel is treated outside of the S support options. She and Rafal are DLC options meaning they can't have an important role. They both hail from a world where Alear isn't their siblings, leading to them feeling 0 feeling familial feeling to Alear and being the explanation as to why they aren't siblings in canon. They are both written very differently from Veyle and Alear, I mean just try to compare the boss dialogue Nel and Rafal have with Sombron to Veyle and Alear's : Sombron says at most 1 line. And in Nel's case, 2 words ! Nel and Rafal have 0 real bearing on the plot... or bearing period. Past the DLC, their plot relevance goes from 100 to 0 and essentially revolves around commenting how the pictures decorating the Somniel were sligthly more on the left in their original world

There is also their support conversation being limited to having Nel progress in her firendship with Alear and acknowledging them as their own person. And that has nothing to with the S support sinc eit's entirely optional and they were written with the idea that Nel and Rafal are unlocked story wise before we learn that Alear is a Fell dragon as well, hence the lack of teasing between them. In fact, you can pretty much see the difference between how her relationship with Alear is portrayed vs how Veyle's relationship with Alear is written.

Besides, seeing how love is a DLC theme and that Nel was in love with her Alear... I actually see what they were trying to do. The idea being that just how Nel was able to accept Rafal as her twin while viewing him as different then Nil, she actually is able to construct a romantic relationship with Alear while viewing them as who they are. It's also helping that Rafal felt as though she wasn't viewing him as who he is but just as a replacement of Nil so I see why. And I do think Nel being able to developp a romantic bond is actually important to her character. Besides I think that expecting her to out of all a suddent to feel a kinship for Alear because of Sombron... is wrong. In her support with Veyle, it's precisely the mention of Sombron that makes her go gloomer and makes her uncomfortable in front of Veyle's offer. And Alear doesn't view Nel as family because of all the DLC shenanigans. Nel was able to built a bond with Veyle because she never met her Veyle, but she knew Alear in her world and she also met Alear right after losing hers, so I really don't see how you can think character wise she could feel a family bond to Alear ? Friendship ok, but family ? Eh. I personally wouldn't see the romance as removing or weaking the theme of family when Nel's writing doesnt make it feel like they were trying to aim in that direction. Like, idk if IS decided to make Lumera a romance option, yeah they would have screwed, but Nel... nay.

Now her romance is still kind of weaken by the weird narrative of her being able to woo the alternate version of her boyfriend who in this world is the child of the alternate version of her dad from a world where he has different origins, but that's just IS being kind of tastless as always. It doesn't really hurt because of her DLC status and her comming from a world where Alear isn't her sibby. She is mostly a character whose removal in the main plot don't change much and that can be easily overlooked so really, her relationship status to Alear being seen as controversial are as plot relevant as knowing whether or not Byleth has enough of Rhea's DNA for it to be considered a problem for them to marry her.

I don't exactly remember how I reacted, but I remember feeling euphoric about the Rafal prequel, even though I don't think I screamed, or did I? I've forgotten by now. But anyway, it was surreal because I literally never in a million years would've imagined he would be a protagonist! Like, how could a book about him be profitable? (At the time, a decent amount of the fandom seemed to hate him for all of his crimes in the main series.) I must've gasped really loudly (I do that sometimes)—loudly enough that my mother thought something was wrong from another room.

(And then, I had suddenly acquired a new fear, heretofore unknown: what if the new book "mischaracterized" Rafal? I pre-ordered the book, but I put off reading it for months, which probably sounds ridiculous, but no, Rise was overall spectacular in the end. It was only the quasi-Goodness in Fall that irked me a bit because Rafal's actions were inconsistent and often not truly Good, especially when we look at the motives backing them. I was absolutely relieved that he was still greatly flawed and acting like his old self, what some people might call "problematic"/controversial, by the end of Fall. A squeaky-clean record was the last thing I wanted from him. He doesn't deserve a clean slate! For instance, it was a bad move on his part, but I actually liked what went down with the demimagus, Midas, and Rufius.)

Yes! I thought Hook would have a larger role in Fall, for all he did for the plot before. So, I was actually surprised by how he was sidelined.

(I'm still sort of planning on doing a TCY re-read, but I'm thinking of starting my fic first, and then doing a re-read as a refresher/fact-check, so I can fix things, if I notice anything, about, say, the Bank of Putsi, maybe Kei, the Tournament of Kings, the crystal ball, and the Japethery I've probably forgotten about. Although I've read QFG multiple times and ACOT twice, I've only read OTK once, so it's the one I'm the most foggy on.)

I am really curious to see your take on Aric and Japeth's relationship. I mean, the beloved author and creator of the series have addressed this issue with 'in their own sick wicked way they had loved' so yeah it's cannon cool. But I feel like the further implications of this? We saw evil 'unable to love'/ 'only ever have true love'. From what I remember Japeth mentioned Aric more than once, how they would write letters to each other how Aric 'begged' for Japeth to come to him but Japeth never did so and then bro spent the last of his life trying to bring Aric back to life. There are so many implications, the dynamics, the context, everything, but I love how you theorise and explore all sorts of ideas so I can't help but wonder how you view all of this :D.

Sorry to disappoint, but I should probably start off with the fact that I don't ship Japeth and Aric. While I like Japeth, partly in thanks to @discjude winning me over, and further recognizing the tragedy surrounding him, his relationship to Aric never canonically does him any favors. And, with Aric, I think I'm apathetic enough towards him that I don't actively hate him; I just don't care about him. In truth, if not for Aladdin's pitiful existence actively hammering on my nerves, Aric would probably be my least favorite character.

The first thing I want to address is that Evil being "unable to love" or "only Evers have True Love" is actually false, despite the many times the series puts forth this claim. Yes, we are explicitly told this "fact" in book 1, but the book's point was to subvert/deconstruct the myth.

First, by the end, with her self-sacrifice, Sophie proved Evil's capacity to love, meaning: Evil being unable to love is just a commonly-held belief in the Woods, not the absolute, be-all, end-all truth.

(And the belief could've been perpetuated by "Rafal's"/Rafal's way of running his institution that literally shapes the Wood's perceptions and the future. Alongside this claim about love, consider the existence of the Doom Room, created to punish a singular mutinous class of first-years, based on a now-revised philosophy about Nevers' learning from harsh treatment and (probably) disproportionate retribution that an excessively stubborn dead man already too entrenched in his old ways never had the chance to change because he died—and this is all aside from the fact proven by the display at the very first Circus of Talents, that Rafal's students did indeed learn better when he finally listened to them and mentored them as an equal in their position (as Fala). In addition, the statement: "Nevers learn from deprivation" similarly reveals how the Woods really do generalize about Nevers—until Sophie, the "exception" and iconoclast, comes along.)

Second, Sophie's non-romantic True Love at some point was said to be Agatha, and I think this established fact is consistently maintained throughout the series, even if other elements overshadow it, so not only Evers can have True Love.

My take on Japeth and Aric is that Japeth's love for Aric, however twisted or sincere it was, drove him to become the Snake, follow along with Rhian's Camelot ambitions and initial staging-terrorism-and-hostage-scenarios plot, and commit all his other, duplicitous, villainous acts throughout TCY, later by his own will, which is a motive I find fascinating (and contradictory about the nature of the Woods' Good and Evil souls, whenever Japeth is set next to the rather grey Rhian).

So, while Japeth's devotion to Aric could be viewed as romantic, it's just not appealing to me, personally, due to the relationship's ambiguous one-sidedness in particular. And, I think I once may've read something about Japeth as a Never fighting for True Love (or his perception of "True Love") and Rhian as an Ever fighting for power (the Nevers' ideal fairy-tale ending) being ironic or inverted in some way. That's also some world-building fodder to consider, or even just another point that could overturn the Rules as we know them, yet again. I'm not surprised by that subversion honestly. Japeth is very much like his parents. Nearly every SGE villain Soman has ever written has been motivated by the pursuit of love, or by the overwhelming force of their own (often obsessive) infatuations (with the exception of somewhat flatter, less-developed, secondary villains, like Aric, Vulcan, Marialena, and Peter Pan).
